The iconic Jeep Wrangler has a loyal following, thanks to its classic design, rugged image, and legendary history. Updated with a modern powertrain, this may be the best version yet. But the Wrangler is seriously outdated in the modern world. While designed for capable off-roading ability, on the road performance is uncivilized. The ride is unsettled, sometimes even snappy. Handling is very clumsy.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"The drive is smooth, doesn't feel bumpy."

Connie S., TX (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"This is really not Jeep's fault. I placed larger wheels and tires on my Jeep. My Jeep has a V6 engine, therefore, the V6 has a little bit of a hard time giving my Jeep a decent acceleration. Looking back, I would have purchased the V8 option."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"This Wrangler was our mid life crisis vehicle, first 4X4 vehicle and our first non Ford in 25 years. We purchased it because we always wanted a 4X4 and jeeps are considered the crem-dela-crem in this field with the Wrangler Rubicon being the top of the "stock" models. With that said comparison to what I am used to is unfair. On the highway: Compared to our C-Max hybrid it is loud and rough. Compared to my F150 it is loose and a little loud. Compared to my F350 Diesel it is a really nice ride. It"

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Typical jeep, very slow acceleration poor emergency handling, must take turns slowly, my jeep is a 2 dr version. With all terrain tires the ride is actually not too bad, put on off road tires and ride is terrible. Braking is okay, but could be much shorter stopping distance."

SUSAN H., TX (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Handling is jittery. Car is all over the road. Acceleration is also mediocre at best. Fatiguing to drive it on longer trips."

VES L., ON (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"poor handling...great offload, but poor on highway"

REX C., NH (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Weak on acceleration at times, handling is sometimes mushy due to larger after market tires. Turning ratio is excellent"

TERRI J., CA (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"The car handles well, especially off-road, which is a major reason we bought this vehicle. However, even with the new engine it feels somewhat underpowered, though it performs satisfactorily, even hauling a trailer that is near the weight limit. Please qualify this comment by the factor that I have driven a 2004 Dodge Durango with a Hemi engine for the past 11 years and have been spoiled by its power."

SHEILA L., MI (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"I love driving manual, and there are less and less options on the market. The Wrangler is just a lot of fun, not a sensible choice but I do plenty of those regardless."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"The acceleration lagged directly from the factory, so I added an aftermarket device called "Pedal Commander" which connects between the accelerator and the onboard computer. Now my response is extremely responsive."

Michael H., MI (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Excellent acceleration"

William B., FL (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"It is great to go off road!"

W H., MD (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Seats are narrow and hard top leaks."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"It is a very capable vehicle that inspires confidence but it is not a long-distance highway cruiser. It has a firm, truck-like ride that I like but is not for everybody."

Deanne N., KY (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Love the looks both inside and out."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"I enjoy driving it. I am aware CR is not impressed by this vehicle, but people dot buy Wranglers for comfort, but for usefullness."

Chris M., MA (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"The Jeep is an iconic vehicle that is utilitarian in design and execution. While fun to drive, the term exhilarating does not come to mind. The acceleration leaves the driver wanting a bit more power. The rear seats should be pitched back another 15 a 20 degrees to enhance comfort."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"It’s really fine. I would really have preferred more standard horsepower out of the gate for acceleration purposes. It makes entering traffic easier and it helps with smooth manual transmission shifting."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Great acceleration and all around fun to drive."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"View of the road, acceleration."

Kathryn M., PA (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"excellent pickup speed for passing. Handling is great for small turning radius to get out of tight spots"

Ronald B., MI (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Jeep drives well. It’s a manual transmission. Has good exceleration. The boxy design means it’s it tougher in the wind"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Cheap interior overall poorly made"

David M., TX (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Noise and ride are about what was expected but seat materials are very poor. After only a year, seat materials are already showing severe signs of wear."

William B., NC (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Ride is more smooth than what I thought it would be. Front seats are roomy but back seat is cramp."

Connie S., TX (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"The seats have improved substantially from our 2007 Wrangler and there is plenty of leg room for a tall person. Ergonomics are excellent overall"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"there are a lot of aftermarket work on this vehicle. suspension, tires, wheels, many LEDs, etc that makes it look great. very attractive. the plain original Jeep is not that pretty"

EHSAN S., IL (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"narrow seats, cramped seating, rear seats impossible to get in & out of for an adult."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Having a removable hard top I thought it would be loud and hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It not bad at all. Temp is no different than a normal SUV. Cabin noise is minimal."

KEITH D., TX (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"GPS is difficult to read not enough detail"

DAVID M., TX (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"As you note annually, the Jeep Wrangler does not have a good "ride" in the sense that CU rates cars. I KNEW this when I acquired it. I use it for random errands, as well as to launch a small boat from a trailer. Perfect for my needs!"

CHRIS M., MA (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Harsh ride and hard seates"

Anonymous, SC (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Height of driver seat continuously lowers. Need to use the pump lever to raise seat."

Dawn D., FL (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Back seats are not comfortable on long trips. Need more position options on back seats."

Marc W., AR (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"A lot of noise inside cabin with the soft top jeep especially on highway. Not very smooth ride, seats are very vertical in the back and not a lot of room between front seat backs and back seat for car seats. Speakers pose problem with head clearance in the back seat as well."

Anonymous, KY (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"There is a bit of road noise due to the fact that it's a Jeep with a removable be expected. The ride is like a sports car, which I also expected and like, even at age 74!"

J M., MI (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Excellent ride Jeep has really improved the ride over time"

William B., FL (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Noisy ride, but seats are decent"

Thomas B., MS (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"noise could be less"

Penny H., NY (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"More comfortable and elegant than I thought it would be."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Seats are terrible with little to no support. After the first year the foam is compressed so bad ther is no support left."

Stephen H., MS (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Very deep seats allow for leg support"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"The ride is just as I expected with a vehicle of this type. Of course, it is NOT a sedan, so I don't it expect it to ride like one. I got a Jeep for the FUN of off-roading, not for the experience of daily driving. That's what peeves me off the most about your rating of the Jeep, it's not for comfort, it's for FUN!"

Michael H., MI (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Bad value"

Anonymous, QC (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"It's a Jeep. I bought it because it's a Jeep; Nothing else is."

Edward D., CO (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"not practical for daily commute but great weekender"

ALFRED R., NY (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"drives like a jeep not good not bad just different"

Anonymous, CO (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"well made sturdy vehicle"

ANTHONY C., NY (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"I particularly value this model because it is the anniversary celebration model with symbols (such as the 1941) and the special color "Sarge Green" that celebrates the model's history."

SHEILA L., MI (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Ability to go preety much any with it"

RICHARD U., FL (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Solid vehicle; great in snow and other conditions, holds resale value"

Kevin F., NY (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"The Jeep is outdated: It lacks a backup camera, blind spot monitoring, better transmission system to get the MPG up"

W H., MD (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"I understand that the market for a wrangler is in high demand and the price reflects that, I'm good with that. However I feel as if I got treated unfairly at my dealership for the lease deal I got."

Jeffrey E., MI (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Very reliable and dependable. High trade-in value even after 8-10 years."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"We purchased this vehicle to tow behind our motorhome. It is definitely not a luxury car but sure is fun to drive and tows easily. Not at all sorry"

Shirley G., RI (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"it was a new prior year model Rubicon. the dealer made a great deal to get it off their lot. the wrangler has been built up for fun on the trails. can't go wrong with a Rubicon!"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"got what I wanted & paid for. could be less noise though"

Penny H., NY (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Very good value. Use it for short trips and trailering a boat."

Chris M., MA (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"For what you get, the jeep is wholly overpriced, it is 2018 and fuel mileage is still rock bottom. The soft top operation is a joke, no longer simple operation, only advantage is weight compared to hard top. Blue tooth linking to radio from smartphone is horrible, cuts out. Many times trying to get sound to work for navigation off of phone is hair pulling. Of course ride is rough, even with highway tires. Emergency handling, unless you know what you’re doing, is pretty much nonexistent. Interior is over styled with a lot of useless components just to justify jacking up the price. The oem bumpers are a total joke as is the little pipe jack that came with jeep."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"You get a four wheel drive vehicle capable of off road, snow, rain or pavement. You get the ability to have a soft top or a hard top and can convert either to a convertible. You are easily able to remove to doors. All of this is a one of a kind vehicle and experience. Rough ride is a part of the experience. Love it."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Great resale value. No problems in first three years. Quality seems good."

Deanne N., KY (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"With aftermarket doors, wheels and tires, our Firecracker Red Jeep looks incredibly cool. People turn their heads when she rolls by. So fun to make people smile! We love the look of our Jeep!! It's the first 'fun' and 'play' vehicle we've ever purchased."

MICHAEL W., NM (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"Typical jeep outside, inside too many gadgets, outside the factory bumpers are useless. The soft top is a royal pain in the backside, cant drop it back because it takes up too much space and removing it all together takes an act of congress."

SUSAN H., TX (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"see previous response"

EHSAN S., IL (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"My Jeep is a great balance of utility and comfort. It drives and feels like a truck, rather than a large sedan, which I love."

CHRISTOPHER S., MI (2016 Jeep Wrangler)

"driver position front view sight clunky seat position front and rear"
