The Mazda3 is among the most well-rounded models in the small car category. It is quieter, rides more comfortably, and is more agile and fuel efficient than its Protegé predeccesor. Moreover, it returned very impressive fuel economy, especially for a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle with an automatic transmission. The Madza3's very good interior quality stands out in a category where many vehicles are cheaply finished.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"great gas mileage for local driving after 10 years of ownership! Noise level has become worse. Too many rattles. 24 tires in 10 years! And its not my driving! I have owned two standard transmission Hondas and never had a tire issue like the Mazda 3. Hondas did well beyond 200,000 miles.iMany alignments and a bushing and tie rod issues. Once the car reached 130,00 miles, now at 160,00, these issues occurred.I must say that this car is still FUN to drive! Zoom zoom!"

JENNIFER J., NY (2006 Mazda 3)

"Quick, fun to drive. Comfortable even on long trips. Great visibility all around. Main complaint is too much road noise."

ERIC M., OR (2006 Mazda 3)

"I am very pleased with the acceleration and power of the Mazda 3. Many similar cars are underpowered and very poorly made. I believe they would be unsafe on the high way. I never feel unsafe on the highway in the Mazda."

LYN T., IA (2006 Mazda 3)

"nice handling, fun to drive"

CHRISTOPHER R., CA (2006 Mazda 3)

"The Mazda 3 is a very responsive car, except when using A/C."

Anonymous, NJ (2006 Mazda 3)

"Sharp handling."

JOHN B., CA (2006 Mazda 3)

"Handling and acceleration. Zoom Zoom"

Anonymous, ON (2006 Mazda 3)

"The little rocket has 150000 miles on it and has been almost trouble free. Complaints would be snow, no go, and has a tendency to hydroplane in wet weather."

CHUCKL L., KS (2006 Mazda 3)

"This car with a 2.3 L engine is both peppy and responsive beyond what you would expect for a car in this price range. It is also very good on gas especially on the highway at 100 to 110 kmph."

DAVID G., NS (2006 Mazda 3)

"Acceleration leaves a lot to be desired."

Anonymous, ON (2006 Mazda 3)

"Handling with performance-rated tires is superb, and 2.3 liter engine is exhilarating -- especially in its price range."

BOB S., AB (2006 Mazda 3)

"Compared to other similar class of cars, the Mazda 3 provides the best power and handling driving experience."

DAN T., AZ (2006 Mazda 3)

"Handling is great, but acceleration in the standard 4 cylinder is somewhat balky from a dead stop. Acceleration is good when underway, but if I had to do it over again I would consider the turbocharged model (not available at the time I purchased mine)"

Anonymous, VA (2006 Mazda 3)

"A fun car to drive especially when the road gets curvy. Very good handling and a great manual shifter"

GAR D., SC (2006 Mazda 3)

"Love how it handles curves. 1st hear doesn't have much oomph but 2nd gear more than makes up for it."

CHRISTINA S., AB (2006 Mazda 3)

"Fun to drive. Quick acceleration, responsive handling."

DONALD H., CA (2006 Mazda 3)

"Unless the car is fully loaded, this Mazda accelerates very well. The car corners very well for a front wheel drive."

GARY J., NM (2006 Mazda 3)

"It's really fun to drive. Handling is precise and agile."

DAVID H., CA (2006 Mazda 3)

"Acceleration and handling are both great except for it being upset more than I thought it would be with a moderate to strong side wind."

Anonymous, MN (2006 Mazda 3)

"Quick and fun to drive"

Anonymous, WA (2006 Mazda 3)

"Takes corners great. Smooth ride. I have the 16' rim package"

Anonymous, BC (2006 Mazda 3)

"The acceleration and handling is much better in this vehicle than a comparable civic. The part that stands out the most is the gearing. Maybe its just the added power compared to the civic, but I really feel like the gear ratios are adjusted to normal driving speeds so that at 40 the Mazda just urges you to go faster. It's part of the feeling that makes this car exhilarating to drive at a reasonable price."

DAVID W., IL (2006 Mazda 3)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Overall very good, but I opted for cloth seats, which are less comfortable and more subject to wear. I would strongly consider leather seating option, which would be an up-cost."

Anonymous, VA (2006 Mazda 3)

"Noisier than almost any car its size. Seats are hard and rough for long drives. Ride is generally tolerable but jarring at times"

BOB S., AB (2006 Mazda 3)

"Climate control does not cool the as fast as I would like."

JEFF D., IL (2006 Mazda 3)

"My Mazda 3 has the most comfortable seats (front), ever. They are better than many expensive office chairs; sometimes, I wish that I could work from my car. :-)"

LINDSAY H., OR (2006 Mazda 3)

"air conditioning is weak."

Anonymous, QC (2006 Mazda 3)

"I wish they would improve on the road noise when traveling over 50 miles per hour."

GEORGIA G., CO (2006 Mazda 3)

"Alot of road noise. Sporty ride."

Anonymous, WA (2006 Mazda 3)

"Overall comfortable, but kind of noisy."

LAURA W., CA (2006 Mazda 3)

"the seats are not as comfortable as other vehicles. It seems noisier than other vehicles."

Anonymous, BC (2006 Mazda 3)

"The low-profile tires make you feel every bump in the road; those tires also have to be replaced frequently and are more expensive than standard tires."

Anonymous, NJ (2006 Mazda 3)

"Road noise level in cabin is too loud. A/C underpowered Ride is firm/tight - I love it, but others may feel it's too harsh."

Anonymous, WI (2006 Mazda 3)

"Really comfortable front seats. Road noise can be excessive at highway speeds."

ERIC M., OR (2006 Mazda 3)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I found it to be somewhat more expensive than other similar cars."

LYN T., IA (2006 Mazda 3)

"The value is exceptional. The gas mileage is only average, but overall the experience is enhanced compared to a comparable civic of the same era (2006)."

DAVID W., IL (2006 Mazda 3)

"low price reliable"

MICHAEL P., NY (2006 Mazda 3)

"I bought the car used for a good price. It has held up well, and the maintenance cost has been low."

Anonymous, MI (2006 Mazda 3)

"Very reliable, fun to drive."

JOHN B., CA (2006 Mazda 3)

"It has been a very reliable car since new. No major problems, great gas mileage"

GAR D., SC (2006 Mazda 3)

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Loved its bad ass look before the Mazdas became more bubbly in styling. Hate what they did with the front end until the 2016 model came out. Now the front end is arch again but the back end is too rounded."

CHRISTINA S., AB (2006 Mazda 3)
