The Mazda3 combined real sportiness with the best gas mileage -- 33 mpg overall -- of any conventional compact car of its time. That earned it one of the top spots in our compact-car Ratings. It's a joy to drive, thanks to super-sharp handling, sprightly engines, and smooth transmissions.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"Enormous fun to drive. Power to weight ratio and 2.5 liter engine allows excellent acceleration; handling on Washington's mountain roads quite a thrill."

DICK B., WA (2015 Mazda 3)

"The Mazda drives and handles like a sport sedan cost way above its price level."

VIRGIL H., TX (2015 Mazda 3)

"outstanding handling and power for a car in this class"

JAMES Y., TN (2015 Mazda 3)

"I do not like the poor acceleration I get from the Mazda 3 manual shift. I often have to downshift when I do not wnat to."

Anonymous, PA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Smooth and powerful acceleration, great responsive and confident handling. Very sporty! I would buy the Mazda 3 again for the way it handles!"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Mazda 3)

Anonymous, WA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Fun to drive, great handling and surprisingly quick for a car that get 40mph highway. Very comfortable seats, excellent climate control and lots of safety features."

RAY D., OR (2015 Mazda 3)

"The headlights follow the steering, so if you're turning right, the headlights actually move right to show where you're going!"

Anonymous, WA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Very zippy, responsive, and fun."

Anonymous, CO (2015 Mazda 3)

"had been really disappointed w/ mpg numbers until I took it on long trip, fully loaded. was shocked and elated to discover that car got 40 mpg on the long interstate trip averaging 75 mph! it seems most content and efficient at high speeds."

CHUCK W., NJ (2015 Mazda 3)

"Handling is great and its fun to drive"

RICHARD F., NH (2015 Mazda 3)

"This is my 4th Mazda; it's a standard shift; I love to drive this car; it hugs the curves and is so responsive. The 6th gear has a 1/1 ratio which is why I can get such incredible has mileage. I have actually been able to get 51 mpg on a road trip over the Cascade mountain range between central Oregon and Portland OR.; and I don't drive conservatively."

Anonymous, OR (2015 Mazda 3)

"Most engaging and fun driving and handling car I've ever driven."

MATTHEW T., CT (2015 Mazda 3)

"The handling and acceleration are very good. I think the driving experience is one of the best I've had. Visibility however, is not so good."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Everything about the way the Mazda3 drives is linear and predictable. I have never felt as "at one" with a machine before."

Anonymous, MI (2015 Mazda 3)

"The car handles like a sports car and accelerates quickly. The MPG has been better than expected despite this."

KURT S., PA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Manual transmission gives it lots of zip and is more fun to drive than my BMW"

JOE G., NC (2015 Mazda 3)

"Very nice to drive and makes it great to drive. Feel able to handle any situation as the car is agile and fun to drive."

ALLYN R., PA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Great acceleration and handling. . . AWD would make it an absolutely PERFECT car!!"

JOHN T., WI (2015 Mazda 3)

"Very pleased with mileage (34+ MPG) and performance of engine. Car is capable of 0-60 in 7.5 secs and has excellent low and mid range torque. Superb handling for a car of this price. Some may find the steering too responsive but for those who are awake at the wheel, it is pure joy. There are other cars that may exceed the Mazda's capability but you will be paying more for it or will sacrifice stealth."

RICHARD Y., WA (2015 Mazda 3)

"This is like driving a four-door hatchback Miata."

WILLIAM L., MA (2015 Mazda 3)

"I love driving this car. It is very responsive stable and maneuverable"

Anonymous, QC (2015 Mazda 3)

"I love the driving experience, but I do wish I had bought the car with the larger engine. The driving dynamics are excellent, and it would have been perfect had the engine had a little more power."

HERBERT S., NC (2015 Mazda 3)

"I have the 2.5L engine, which has power to spare for quick acceleration and highway passing. Definitely much more fun to drive than the Prius I traded in for it."

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Mazda 3)

Anonymous, CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"We have a six-speed manual. It shifts gears very easily and there is a dash indicator when to suggest it is time to change gears. I never worry as we head up an onramp to an expressway that I will be going fast enough to safely merge. All in all, it is great! It is also very easy to park."

DAVID B., IL (2015 Mazda 3)

"Acceleration and handling are excellent."

LEONARDO B., VA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Zoom Zoom, this is mostly my wife's car but it's a kick to drive. It zips around, holds the road great. We had a 2012 model and this newer one has the bigger engine (2.5L), it makes a difference on the freeway. It's worth the slightly lower MPG for the driving experience."

GARY J., CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Acceleration and handling are excellent. Noise level is too high. Infotainment center is worst feature -- hard to navigate."

KEITH C., FL (2015 Mazda 3)

"-Not possible to add satellite radio if wanted; not told of it prior to purchase. -Finish scratches too easily! -Can't drive with rear window(s) open as it sounds as if a helicopter is landing on the roof"

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Mazda 3)

"This car has precise handling , excellent acceleration, and a SLICK shifting manual transmission. It rewards good driving. The cockpit is designed to not distract the driver. Awesome"

LYLE F., GA (2015 Mazda 3)

"The manual transmission shifts poorly, often difficult to shift into 3rd gear. Most noticeable when the not warmed up. Steering is vague and there is no road feel. Every gust of wind or road surface change causes the car to change direction. Requires constant input to keep a straight line."

Anonymous, ON (2015 Mazda 3)

"Acceleration and handling are good but visibility on sides is bad. It is a good thing I have blind spot sensors (which are EXCELLENT)."

SHERI O., CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"The car feels incredibly "planted" on the road. I notice this most when I drive other cars; most every other car feels spongy and I don't feel as though I have a connection to the road. Its handling is the best."

Anonymous, MA (2015 Mazda 3)

"There is very little road feel through the steering wheel. It feels numb or disconnected."

Anonymous, PA (2015 Mazda 3)

"The steering could be a bit tighter. The car's front lifts a lot under hard acceleration."

DAVID L., QC (2015 Mazda 3)

"It is just a joy to drive!"

EUGENE R., ME (2015 Mazda 3)

"Acceleration and handling is excellent in this car. I expected that and have not been disappointed."

KAREN S., MI (2015 Mazda 3)

"Steering is responsive and manual transmission is crisp"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Mazda 3)

"The most fun I've had driving a sedan in my 66 years. Great handling, fun to (manually) shift. It's not a BMW, but isn't priced like one either, and the Miata DNA is evident."

LAZULT C., CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"interior noise."

ASHRAM P., FL (2015 Mazda 3)

"great acceleration and it still gets great MPG. I thought I could only get one or the other"

RAY L., NV (2015 Mazda 3)

"I drove it out to Victoria BC and back last winter without snow tires. Had no problems whatsoever. Very comfortable considering I was on the road 10 hours a day."

LANI A., ON (2015 Mazda 3)

"This car is just fun to drive. Love the 6-speed manual!"

Anonymous, ID (2015 Mazda 3)

"Acceleration and ride are great. I'm happy I asked for the manual transmission, which is silky and a joy to operate and makes driving a pleasure. One quibble in handling is that it takes a little more steering wheel control to prevent lateral drifting than I am used to."

BRUCE P., MD (2015 Mazda 3)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The head rest is pitched forward so I have to use a pillow to keep my neck from aching when I drive."

WAYNE W., MD (2015 Mazda 3)

"The only weakness I see in this car is it loud at speed on the highway."

KENNETH B., GA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Seats are very comfortable for all sizes of people. Climate control is very easy to use and adjusts quickly. The ride is what I expected from this car."

KAREN S., MI (2015 Mazda 3)

Anonymous, ON (2015 Mazda 3)

"Somwhat noisy. Ride is stiff, not great for passegers"

Anonymous, BC (2015 Mazda 3)

"road noise level is annoyng"

STEPHEN C., PA (2015 Mazda 3)

"bad road noise & hard ride"

ANTHONY S., AZ (2015 Mazda 3)

"Much quieter ride compared to the 2010 model. The 2015 is also much easier on tire wear than the 2010. The hands off feature for communications is more distracting on the 2015 though. It requires too much screen navigation, where more of that was voice controlled on the 2010, which I feel was better."

Anonymous, IL (2015 Mazda 3)

"Wish it had climate control for back seat and was quitter."

Anonymous, KS (2015 Mazda 3)

"The cabin noise is so loud that you can not hear the radio or anyone speaking to you in the back seat. Sometimes when conversing with a person in the front seat requires you to turn off the ??."

ROBIN L., FL (2015 Mazda 3)

"I think a little reduction in road noise would be advisable - perhaps more acoustic insulation."

E W., KY (2015 Mazda 3)

"Very nimble car to drive. The fit and finish are excellent and overall I love the styling and colour (soul red mica). I am disappointed however with road noise (seems to come mainly from the rear) and will try undersealing the car in the Fall to see if this helps reduce the level of noise."

RAY W., ON (2015 Mazda 3)

"Generally comfortable driver's seat with good lower back support and easy access to all controls. Climate controls are easy to operate and climate system works well. Cabin is poorly insulated and road/tire noise can be loud at times."

BRUCE P., IN (2015 Mazda 3)

"Mind my car before this was a hand-me-down Lincoln Town Car, so nothing really compares comfort-wise. The seats are comfortable, though begin to feel a bit firm after a long drive (>2hrs). One passenger I've had commented that the seam in the bottom cushion was oddly placed. A/C works well, though my point of reference is no A/C. The main complaint I would have would be the road noise. It can be quite loud even at moderate speeds, but greatly depends on the road surface."

Anonymous, CO (2015 Mazda 3)

"I bought this one over others because it was the only one with lumbar support of the models I was comparing. But it could be better. It's mostly comfortable but the lumber could be better. Noise is a little higher than I would like but an improvement over previous Mazda 3 models."

LINDA K., WI (2015 Mazda 3)

"not enough storage and a little road noise."

KARL P., FL (2015 Mazda 3)

"The road noise on some types of pavement is high. But I knew this when I bought it, so I don't consider it a drawback."

FELIX F., CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Comfortable seats smooth ride. A tad bit noisy"

MATT H., FL (2015 Mazda 3)

"The. noise is much less than with my previous Mazda (a station wagon)."

KAMAL S., IL (2015 Mazda 3)

"Front passenger seat is to narrow, needs to be wider"

Anonymous, NE (2015 Mazda 3)

"Comfortable and ergonomic car, but the road noise is an issue for me."

MATTHEW T., CT (2015 Mazda 3)

"Passenger seats are not comfortable. A child safety seat can not be installed in the center of the back seat due to seat being raised. Back seat back rest is not split thus unable to bring half of seat down if needed. Also drivers side window button either opens all the way or closes complete difficult to adjust openness of window."

Anonymous, ON (2015 Mazda 3)

"A lot of road noise."

MARY G., CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"BEST seats ever in a car. Very comfortable!!"

STEVEN O., DE (2015 Mazda 3)

"AC controls excellent. Somewhat noisier than I like. Front seats ok but could use more back support"

MARK S., SC (2015 Mazda 3)

"Driver side front seat not as comfortable as passenger front seat."

JOHN C., MD (2015 Mazda 3)

"The car does not insulate road noise well. At times it can be very annoying."

RONALD M., CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Lots of road noise."

TONY R., CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Driver and passenger sit a little too low in the car. I (6') and my wife (5'4") both have noticed it. I've found it hard to park because I can't see any portion of the front edge of the car. That might be remedied by allowing the driver to sit a bit higher."

M B., TN (2015 Mazda 3)

"BAD = seats lack lumbar adjustment and cause lower back pain with chronic use (long trip or commuting) for me. I am thin but tall, at 6'"

Anonymous, PA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Seats can get quite warm. Otherwise good."

CRAIG M., CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"limited visibility due to A pillars and limited rearward vision"

Anonymous, MI (2015 Mazda 3)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Used Consumer reports Build and Buy to obtain a price I was happy with."

WESLEY R., CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Bluetooth and aircondition was included in base model"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Mazda 3)

ASHRAM P., FL (2015 Mazda 3)

"Excellent value for, engine acceleration and power, engineering in general, economy, handling, style, trunk (it's a hatchback) space. Car's value is much in excess of its actual cost. But: Car is quite noisy at speed; driver's seat should have better support for thighs. These are the ONLY two significant complaints I have about the car."

DAVID F., PA (2015 Mazda 3)

"This car looks and has the performance of a much more expensive car."

WILLIAM L., MA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Sound car for the price. Fuel economy improved from the 2006 Mazda 3 that we own."

Anonymous, NV (2015 Mazda 3)

"Saved nearly $ 6,000 through company purchase program"

MATT H., FL (2015 Mazda 3)

"This is a very solid car for the money. Very well built, and the entertainment center is a nice feature."

ALEXANDRA S., TX (2015 Mazda 3)

"This is a very competitively priced cars in its class. The rearview camera is a great feature, the infotainment system is easy to use, and gas mileage is the best in its class. It's also a very fun car to drive for the price."

AARON R., WA (2015 Mazda 3)

"It is a sportier looking car. It handles good but not as good as our VW gti which is very sporty in the handling department."

STAN D., CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Great styling inside and out. Excellent handling yet lacks power."

JEAN B., NB (2015 Mazda 3)

"Cost was the primary factor when I went car shopping, but the surprisingly higher quality of the Mazda 3 compared to others I looked at, in what is still a reasonably priced car, convinced me to pay just a little more. Quality as a sales gimmick. I haven't regretted it."

BRUCE P., MD (2015 Mazda 3)

"handle turns well. blind spot monitor is an excellent feature on this car"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Mazda 3)

"There are more options on this car than any other car I found at this price point. Great fuel efficiency as well."

Anonymous, IN (2015 Mazda 3)

"I grin every time I get in this car."

LYLE F., GA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Excellent value"

LEONARDO B., VA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Handling very BMW like. Top notch fuel economy. Power ok. Best by far safety features over competition."

MARK S., SC (2015 Mazda 3)

"All around good"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"Bought an Ad car, at the end of model year Great Price"

GARY J., CA (2015 Mazda 3)

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Mazda has made a really good car in the compact car. Styling, the features of the car and the safety features you get are worth every penny."

MICHAEL U., FL (2015 Mazda 3)

"Love the style of the car!!"

STEVEN O., DE (2015 Mazda 3)

"I love the way the Mazda 3 looks from the outside. I can always spot a Mazda. The interior is also pleasing and refreshing."

Anonymous, PA (2015 Mazda 3)

"I am very pleased with the clean lines of my M3 five door hatchback, and have received many compliments on it's styling and color. I bought the optional color Soul Red."

KENNETH R., OH (2015 Mazda 3)

"After having the car for nearly 2 years, I still admire how good it looks every time I walk up to it. The color and styling is perfect."

SCOTT T., WA (2015 Mazda 3)

"modern, same for more than one year"

GEORGE M., ON (2015 Mazda 3)

"This is absolutely a beautiful car. I recommend the hatchback. Love the auto-collision mechanisms installed on the car. This car has blind spots but, is offset by the auto-collision sensors that allow me to know there is a car in those blind spots."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Mazda 3)

"You couldn't have a sportier car."

STAN D., CA (2015 Mazda 3)

"I absolutely hate the location for the front license plate - it totally ruins the look of the front - I actually made a custom holder so I could put it in a different spot"

JEFF K., WA (2015 Mazda 3)

"It's a sleek, stylish looking car; great paint love the wheels"

Anonymous, OR (2015 Mazda 3)

"Very edgy and classy looking. One of the best looking cars on the road for a sedan"

JOE G., NC (2015 Mazda 3)

"The fog light assembly looks a bit cheap. The 2017 model seems to fix that but the grill and headlight styling is not as nice. The interior's fake carbon fiber is unnecessary. The dash could use better quality screens in the GT model than the cheaper ones."
