Very good fuel economy, agile handling, a roomy interior and a generous array of features put the Mazda CX-5 in the top tier of small SUVs. Still, a noisy cabin and choppy ride can be nuisances for some. But for enthusiast drivers looking for the versatility of a small SUV in a sporty-handling package, the CX-5 may be just what they're seeking.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

“Very sensitive, drives well but easy to oversteer.”

Anonymous, NY (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Handling is really tight and feels like a much smaller vehicle. 2.0 engine is a little under-powered but makes up for it in fuel economy.”

Anonymous, QC (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“the 2 liter engine is very small and anemia. Not even close to zoom-zoom. The vehicle does not showed improved fuel efficiency to compensate for it.”

Anonymous, MD (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“The handling is superb, but the acceleration is slow. It would benefit from the larger engine option, or even more so if the turbocharged engine in the new CX-9 was available.”

WILLIAM L., MA (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Underpowered”

Anonymous, VA (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“The 2013 engine is under powered. With this in mind, we purchased a manual transmission, and it is fine. The newer engines are larger, and it makes a big difference!”

Anonymous, ON (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“The electronic acceleration sucks. It takes seconds to kick in and when passing a vehicle that is very dangerous. Also when trying to quickly get out of the way etc.”

JUDITH B., CA (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“The 2.0 engine does not accelerate fast enough for Big City traffic on freeways. The vehicle handles well and has a tight turning radius.”

Anonymous, TX (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Acceleration is good but 2014 CX5 is quicker. Handling is great, smooth and crisp”

T N., NC (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Good perforance”

MERLE C., NS (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“CX-5 Engine is sluggish and has poor acceleration”

Anonymous, NC (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Underpowered -- lots of down-shifting.”

Anonymous, NV (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“When putting the car in drive or reverse from park, there is a long hesitation before engaging and when it does it makes a very hard CLUNK that cannot be good. Dealer checked it out and indicated the have adjusted the transmission as much as they can but it still is a problem”

Anonymous, OH (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“It's a Mazda so it handles great, but the acceleration is a little lacking.”

Anonymous, CO (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“excellent acceleration and handling - fantastic service”

MARK P., CA (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“The vehicle handles well.. It does not have the acceleration as it is a four cylinder.”

MICHAEL P., CA (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“under powered”

JEFF F., NY (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“My touring model came with the smaller 2.0 engine...I believe I would be happier with the 2.5 engine that is now standard on touring models...the slight decrease in fuel economy would be worth extra oomph!”

HERBERT L., OH (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Equipped with a 6 speed manual, will out maneuver most cars on back roads.Real fun.”

CARNICE H., TN (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Acceleration is poor and very noisy, especially when merging into a busy highway at a high speed”

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Mazda CX-5)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“Our only complaint with this vehicle is the ride noise. There doesn't seem to be as much noise deadening insulation in this vehicle as most others.”

Anonymous, IA (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“I would like less road noise.”

JAMES M., KS (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“The outside noise level is quite high. Seats, climate control and ride are acceptable.”

GEORGE T., NV (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“everything is great with the exception of excessive wind noise at highway speeds.”

GREG R., TX (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“great seats and visibility - only negatives: clock - included in radio/DVD player too low on dash for quick check and AC vent freezes hands and arm and can't direct to face.”

JIM H., CO (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Rough ride on factory 19 inch wheels. Feels every bump. Just terrible.”

Anonymous, TX (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“The handling is super. The vehicle is stylish”

JAY S., FL (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Wish there were vents for the second row.”

Anonymous, MD (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“The air conditioner blower is not strong enough, and it takes a long time for the car to cool down. The vents could be in a better place. The seats are very comfortable and once I replaced the tires, the road noise decreased quite a bit. The ride is better now.”

Anonymous, TX (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“the ride is a bit stiff and you hear rotation from the tires in the cabin.”

Anonymous, FL (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“This car is very roomy inside. It is a comfortable ride! I have a tall family and they have plenty of room! This is a great car!”

COLLEEN D., CA (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“I sat in the back seat for the first time ever last month. Sitting on cardboard sliding down a hill would be more comfortable.”

PAUL C., PA (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Ride is a bit soft and power to weight ratio not the best”

Anonymous, LA (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“They should consider an electric multi way seat for the front passenger seat”

Anonymous, OH (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Seat on driver side is unraveling for the second time. Seats are not very well made.”

KERRY I., TX (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Very noisy ride. Everything squeaks.”

BECKY V., WI (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Climate system fan does not have high enough fan speed when set to max. The non-digital temperature control does not keep constant temperature as well as new cars should.”

THOMAS M., VA (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Best buy so far.”

WM G., NY (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“a great car for the price”

Anonymous, ON (2013 Mazda CX-5)

Styling

“very stylish”

Anonymous, CO (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“appreciate the size of the vehicle nice attractive vehicle lines”

Anonymous, ON (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Styling good”

Anonymous, CA (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“It looked good but I added aftermarket chrome inside and out from china that that enhanced the car's appearance greatly.”

Anonymous, FL (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“The interior of this vehicle started to fade and look very worn within a few months of purchase, especially the driver and front passenger armrests and tge dash. The steering wheel gets excessively hot when needing to be parked outside for any length of time. Additionally, it takes in excess of 15 minutes to cool interior when it has been sitting outside. The floor mats are also not holding up very well, and the cheap plastic covers on the back seat areas are poorly made and break frequently”

Anonymous, TX (2013 Mazda CX-5)

“Good perforance”

MERLE C., NS (2013 Mazda CX-5)
