Small SUVs tend to be boring boxes, short on driving enjoyment or verve. But for enthusiast drivers looking for the versatility of a small SUV in a sporty-handling package, the CX-5 may be just what they're seeking. Very good fuel economy, agile handling, a roomy interior and a generous array of features put the Mazda CX-5 in the top tier of small SUVs, though a few lapses in refinement may annoy some buyers.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

“Acceleration a bit slow, but attributed to the smaller 4 cylinder engine. I had a V-6 Fordfusionsel was more peppy, but unfortunately only 19mpg.”

RON F., AZ (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Handling is surprisingly good given that it is a tall vehicle.”

DAVID P., MO (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Car has excellent acceleration and handling is pretty tight relative to the larger cars I'm used to driving”

Anonymous, LA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The Mazda handles more like a sports sedan than an SUV. Acceleration is good and steering is precise.”

BRENT A., VA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“great pep for a four cilinder”

IRVING M., TX (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“I feel when I put gas pedal down it doesn't always give me the power I need to pull out into traffic. It is unreliable”

Anonymous, PA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“gas milage and size”

PAUL R., TN (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Love the way it drives. It's fast, fun, and responsive. On the freeway, on in town, it does exactly what you tell it to do without hesitation or reluctance. It feels great on the road or off.”

Anonymous, NV (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Acceleration is very good and handling excellent.”

PAT M., FL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Lots of power. Easy to maintain speed even thru the mountains with a full complement of family and luggage. Good response to steering, turns on a dime! Very relaxing to drive. (Except for road noise)”

RICHARD T., SK (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The handling is better than my last 2010 Honda Civic with lowered aftermarket suspension. Feels confident except when turning sharply above 30 mph. It may need a bigger/stiffer rear sway bar. Tires are not the best quality and brakes judder under hard braking. Acceleration is really nice compared to similar CUVs, but could use another 20-30hp. Transmission tends to hunt for gears at lower speeds and can be disconcerting.”

Anonymous, FL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“It handles well around corners. Acceleration is good at lower speeds up to around 90 kl/h. On cruise control, it somewhat over react on shifting down when the resume button is pressed”

PIERRE B., ON (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Very stiff sport like handling typical of the Mazda brand”

COREY L., CO (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Lots of pep, drives sporty.”

BRIAN D., CA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The car drives very well for a crossover. The transmission is excellent and very responsive. The steering and brakes are great, too.”

Anonymous, VA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“This is a super second car being an sub it is good for hauling”

RONALD S., TX (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Love it. Handles like a smaller agile car. Acceleration is very smooth and quick”

Anonymous, MD (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“I was reluctant to buy a small SUV with a 2.0 liter engine, but the 6-speed automatic is perfectly geared for this car. I also like the ability to put the transmission in manual mode.”

Anonymous, DE (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The CX-5 lives up to the Mazda slogan, "ZOOM-ZOOM"”

BONITA B., OH (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Very sluggish on hills. Not a "fun" car to drive. Very practical car.”

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Handling is good. Sometimes I feel the automatic transmission gets "stuck" in a gear, and I find myself at too low or too high revs for a number of seconds.”

RANJEET R., CA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“It is the most comfortable car I have ever had. Tight great acceleration and great braking. The seating is alos the best and the way things are laid out for the driver.”

EDWARD D., NJ (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Handles very well at higher speeds. Accelerates very well and the gas mileage is so much better than my old car.”

ELIZABETH G., FL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Really happy with the performance of the 2.5 engine. You cannot even detect when the compressor turns on.”

ROGER T., AL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“It drives like a sports car”

CRAIG N., NY (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The CX-5 drives well, more like a car than an SUV which is one reason we went with it. The cruise control is another standout feature in that it is precise and can be adjusted one mph up/down at a time. I wish all cruise controls were like this one. The dash instrumentation is solidly functional, as are the controls for AC, stereo, etc.”

Anonymous, OH (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“It is quick! very fun to drive in traffic.”

NEIL R., MN (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Fun to drive”

Anonymous, TX (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“All Mazdas handle well. I waited for the 2014 CX-5 because that's when they offered a larger engine. With the larger engine acceleration is good.”

RICHARD F., TX (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Quick acceleration and it handles like a much smaller vehicle.”

GREGG B., WI (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Fun to drive quick responsive”

Anonymous, SK (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Excellent engine transmission combination.”

Anonymous, NY (2014 Mazda CX-5)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“Poor design of air vents/fan. Hard to just get outside air- have to set as close as possible to outside temp so air conditioner doesn't kick in.”

Anonymous, OH (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Seats, climate control and dashboard layout.”

DAVID P., MO (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“This car is very comfortable to drive and handles superbly. When I picked this model out, I wasn't even originally considering it to replace my Lexus 300 ES, but it's been really great, maybe not quite as luxurious as my old car, but really nice. Acceleration and handling are awesome. I am very satisfied.”

ELIZABETH G., FL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“road noise”

Anonymous, TX (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Although it is fairly comfortable, the suspension is noisy. At highway speed, the noise from doors and sunroof are pronounced.”

PIERRE B., ON (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“This car is comfortable, but a bit noisy. Tires might make a difference in the ride as well.”

Anonymous, MN (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Washington state has the noisiest road surfaces I've ever experienced. The tires (19") often roar. I'd happily trade some mpg for more sound insulation if it provided a quieter ride.”

BRUCE G., WA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Has some road noise at highway speeds; other than that I'm very satisfied with the car.”

MARC C., IN (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The vehicle is a huge disappointment with gas mileage. For approximately 3 months I was averaging 30 MPG. Now I am fortunate to average 16 MPG. Then the driver's seat is becoming worn where the seat belt comes across. I have had cars for 14 years and never seen nay wear from the seat belt. Then there is the fact that the heating system take an extraordinary long time to heat/defrost. It takes minimum of 7 minutes to begin to blow warm air. Defrosting the windshield is lengthy. So sorry to”

SUSAN B., NJ (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“seats could be a little more comfortable, heated steering wheel would be nice, more inside storage spaces, ride could be a little quietter”

MICHAEL F., QC (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Seats nice and large, very comfortable. Reasonable noise nice ride.”

T N., NC (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“the sound system is the worst of any car I have owned and there have been many there is a noticeable click/bang on turning Car is noisy in general AC system takes a long time to cool the car even with the fan at the highest level. Heating is the same”

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“much road noise”

Anonymous, FL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Good: the size, handling, comfort, mileage and sound system. On the negative side the navigation system, I prefer Garmin over TomTom which the Mazda has.”

NANCEE K., OH (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The CX-5 handles, stops, and goes very well. It does, however, allow more road noise than I'd like. Mazda has been made aware of this through me and other sources. Otherwise this is a really great car.”

PETER M., FL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“My car is the top of the line CX5, yet only the driver's seat is the 6 way adjustable seat. The front passenger seat is only a basic seat and not nearly as comfortable as the driver's. Why put such a low end seat in their top trim line?”

DONALD V., CO (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“seats are great for long trips. has some wind noise.”

WILLIAM M., TX (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“road noise could be less with more insulation”

DAVID H., NY (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Seats driver ,feels hard after a couple hours.”

Anonymous, MI (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“I love the many adjustments of the driver's seat. I am short and have a bad lower back. My husband is tall. We are constantly changing the height, tilt of seat's back, closeness to the front depending on who's driving. I wish the front passenger seat had the set-up.”

PHYLLIS L., CA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The front passenger seat is not very comfortable for long trips.”

PATRICK F., PA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The rid is stiff and jarring. The interior is quite noisy.”

NEIL R., MN (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The side dash vents don't cover a large enough area. They have to be finely adjusted to get the maximum cool air benefit.”

ROBERT G., CT (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The headrests push your head forward and make for an uncomfortable seating position resulting in headaches. Also, the seat will not go low enough for my leg height (or tilt down) resulting in pressure under my knees that makes my legs fall asleep.”

Anonymous, TX (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Very quiet, little to no engine noise or traffic noise. Love the independent seat warmers in Winter and separate A/C controls. Seats are leather, comfy with great lumbar support.”

L S., NV (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“When you start the car it is a noisy. The seats could be a little more comfy.”

Anonymous, MA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The driver side seat adjustments are electrical and very good. It is nice to be able to easily change your seat setting when on a long trip just to vary the seat positioning.”

RICHARD F., TX (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The vents in the center dash don't allow you the adjust them to actually blow the air away from you. I frequently am cold while my wife is comfortable.”

HALSEY B., VA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Seats could have more padding. Noise level is high on freeway.”

CAROL J., FL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Fairly comfortable seats, very good handling and control but a touch jittery. Could be a little more quiet, but overall very good. Climate control fine.”

PAT M., FL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Seats are very comfortable, climate control works quickly and is very good, and ride is good, but the cabin is very noisy at higher speeds.”

Anonymous, FL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Fun to drive”

Anonymous, QC (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“No seat memory and a little hard after prolonged use.”

Anonymous, NB (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“A/C doesn't get to back seat. Would like auto passenger seat. A little noisy. ride is good. when have back windows open for the dogs have to crack open front window because it creates a kind of vacuum that is painful to ears.”

Anonymous, IL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The car can be noisy on the highway. The front seats are very comfortable.”

Anonymous, MN (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Lots of road noise.”

Anonymous, SC (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The Seats are somewhat hard. And some of the interior covering is fragile.”

JOHN R., MD (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Considerable road noise on coarse surfaces”

COLIN G., CO (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The seats are not supportive enough and the noise level can get annoying on a highway trip.”

MARK M., CT (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“It is very comfortable to drive, plenty of pep. Comfortable seats and navigation controls. Nice stereo. No noises for over 2 years. Great car.”

EDWARD D., NJ (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“-Needs the option of adjustable passenger seat as driver's side -more intuitive navigation and infotainment systems”

Anonymous, CO (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Everything”

Anonymous, KY (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Only thing I don't like is the wind noise when on the freeway. Other then that the SUV is great. Easy to get in and out. All controls are excellent, plenty of room for my size 13. Plenty of power with the 2.5”

Anonymous, OH (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Acceleration is poor because we purchased the base model.”

Anonymous, NY (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Suspension has a sporty feel, good ergonomics for me at 6-1 but lower back pain ensues after 40 minutes of slow traffic On the negative side it has a lot of wind noise at speeds above 50 mph.”

Anonymous, FL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The driver's seat is equipped with a variety of controls that combine to create a very comfortable seating experience, even for a short person like myself.”

Anonymous, IA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Heated seats are ineffective. I rarely know they are on. Seats in general are not as comfortable as I expected in this model.”

JAMES H., FL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Interior quality on this mid-trim package is somewhat austere. For the price the quality is lacking. Also, road noise is somewhat intrusive. Otherwise, quite satisfied with product. 2.5L engine good for freeway and mountain driving.”

JAMES D., AZ (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Noisy, and stiff ride.”

RON F., AZ (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Since I am height-challenged, allows me to sit up higher and see more of traffic.”

JOANN B., CA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“seats very comfortable. Climate fine. Ride a bit rough on some roads and road noise a bit louder than I would like.”

TOM G., ON (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Road noise is terrible. If Mazda would do something to muffle road noise they would have a car that I'd consider near perfect.”

Anonymous, TX (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Interior is a little smaller than we like. Driver's seat has inadequate elbow rests, ride is bouncy and a bit noisy.”

Anonymous, AL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“It has been everything that I read about in CR. It has nice exceleration (for a 4 cylinder), good gas mileage, lots of safety features, great value for the price.”

CHRIS E., TX (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Best overall value compared to similar makes/models.”

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“This is a Performance SUV with Great Road Handling and a Great Value..”

JAMES M., IL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

“Sporty modern styling.”

KEN C., ON (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“elect throttle control errors. When coming to a stop to make a turn the engine goes dead. A similar comment was made about the new (2016-2017) CX9. Seems Mazda doesn't care. I notified Mazda customer complaints in S. Calif. April 15 2015. My primary complaint was unexpected acceleration when coming to a stop. It would make a loud down shift and accelerate forward, in addition to the stall out problem when turning. The Mazda rep.(Megan) stated the problem was mine by left foot breaking . I told”

THOMAS C., WA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Nice looking unique styling to separate it from the look of all the crossovers on the market”

Anonymous, LA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Looks more expensive than actually is. all the features came standard”

JOHNSON R., IL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Vehicles more and more look alike. The CX5 is an attractive vehicle that still manages to stand out among a mostly vanilla crowd of small SUVs.”

BRUCE G., WA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The back seats do not fold down completely flat. This is annoying.”

JANETTE C., NY (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“It's gorgeous. We got the big alloy wheels, red metallic paint. Strangers compliment us and ask what model/year it is all the time. We think it's nicer looking than the Lexus SUV.”

L S., NV (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“always looks good...stylish”

VINCE C., PA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“My new car interior only came with black leather seats and interior trim. I felt the all black interior would be much to hot in the summer. For a reasonable price, I was able to have all the seats changed to beige leather and some of the door trim also. Much cooler in hot summer sun and also looks great with the remaining black trim in the cars interior. I felt Mazda, which had beige leather seats as a choice on some other outside body color should have offered it on its red body colored cars.”

Anonymous, CO (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“I love the way the exterior of the car looks, especially with the special red paint. The Kodo design philosophy really made a difference.”

RANJEET R., CA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The auto is a beauty for a Small SUV.”

Anonymous, TX (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Get lots of comments on how share it looks”

STEPHEN M., BC (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Current looks stands out over many of the current models of SUV. It looks like a mini Lexus without the high prices.”

RICHARD F., CA (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“The styling on the Mazda CX-5 holds well and looks modern and fresh after three years. The workmanship is tight and simple and well thought out. The other car I considered as the Subaru Crosstrek. I think the Subaru ;like many of their model) have an appearance that looks piecemeal and quickly dated.which is the main reason I chose Mazda CX-5 over Subaru Crosstre despite Subaru doing a touch better in Consumer Reports scoring.”

JAMES M., IL (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“too much unpainted black plastic trim on the body”

PHILLIP W., HI (2014 Mazda CX-5)

“Up to date looks , streamlined and funtional”

WILLIAM W., NY (2014 Mazda CX-5)
