The Miata is a fun-to-drive, low-slung little roadster, with pinpoint handling, instant power delivery, and a crisp manual gearbox. Excellent fuel economy is an extra bonus. While it remains very tight, the cabin has grown a little more livable over the years. The ride is surprisingly tolerable, but cabin noise can grow wearying on long cruises.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

“The acceleration is comparably close to other roadsters and good enough for all but a race circuit. The handling is superb, it feels as if the Miata can jump sideways to avoid road hazards.”

PAUL L., FL (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“Handling. And handling. Oh, did I mention how fun the handling is?”

ROBERT D., TX (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“This is the most responsive and sure-footed car I've ever driven. It loves tight curves, and is so light that it accelerates like crazy, even with its relatively small 4 cylinder engine.”

TOKOYO B., MD (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“The car is a hoot to drive. Quick, responsive, predictable (in a good way) and great fun on the curves.”

Anonymous, GA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“Seats are a bit firm and do not adjust on the passenger side. Visors drop only down (at which point they obscure much of the front view) and do not pivot to block the side. I have hardtop but even so noise gets very loud over 60 mph. Could use more sound insulation. Clutch and throttle pedals are aligned so that I wish my left leg (clutch) was longer.”

JEFF A., WI (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“It is a two-seat convertible. Even with the top up, it is noisy at most speeds above 35 mph and worse at highway speeds. The A/C cannot adequately cool you down with the top up as the heat radiates easily through the rag top. The fan is always on high. With the top down - forget it. From mid-Fall through Mid-Spring the car is a joy to drive in Florida. The ride is what you would expect from a roadster, I knew what it would be like.”

PAUL L., FL (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“Just to be clear, this is not a car that is meant to be comfortable. I do not consider a lower level response to be a flaw.”

DAYLE P., TX (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“Seats leave much to be desired. styling so so acceleration mediocre instruments minimal”

ANDRE A., RI (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“Climate control very confusing. Especially AC. Seat sides dig into hip sides”

DAVID K., CA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“Seats are comfortable and seating position is good, but there is not enough room for left foot on dead pedal. Top of foot presses on clutch lever. I am not tall, but I have to move the seat all the way back. There is a lot of road, wind, and engine noise. Engine sound is not pleasant. Climate controls are maddening; it keeps turning on the A/C when I don't want it and I have to keep turning it off.”

R S., TX (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

NA

What Owners Say

“These are just plain fun cars to drive! Not enough power to get you in trouble but enough to merge easily. Handles like my childhood go kart but with a better ride.”

ROBERT D., TX (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

“Really love the retractable hard top and the 6 speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.”

ROBERT G., NY (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“It is the last model year of that styling, and so it is a classic of smooth curves that hearken back to the great British roadsters. The new Miatas just don't have that”

STUART M., NY (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

Owner-satisfaction Ratings are determined by the percentage of those who answered "definitely yes" to the question asked by the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?". If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
