A freshening for 2005 brought a small improvement in fuel economy, along with improved interior fit and finish. The cabin remained roomy and the seats supportive. The four-cylinder engine makes the Altima quick, but noisy under acceleration. Handling is sound, but not nimble and ride is somewhat stiff. It also has a wide turning circle.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. When asked, how it was possible both wheels could give out at the same time ...they really lied and said it was the usual case. I drove the car nearly 3years without any work, before I could convince Midas that I had a problem. Finally, as it got worse, they agreed. They correctly determined which wheel, only the right one, problem solved, and for way less money."

Daniel D., BC (2006 Nissan Altima 2.5 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"The plastic covering beneath the engine frequently scrapes on driveways that slant upward, breaking off the bolts that hold it and the front bumper in place. When this occurs, the bumper is no longer held in place and has to be replaced, which is very expensive, i.e. $2,400"

Doug K., NM (2006 Nissan Altima SE-R 3.5-L V6)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

Doug K., NM (2006 Nissan Altima SE-R 3.5-L V6)

Paul R., FL (2006 Nissan Altima SE 3.5-L V6)

Rust

"All Nissan Altimas of this generation have a problem with rust on the floor boards. Both sides of the front floor boards rust out and Nissan will do nothing to fix this. I had to replace my drivers side at 90,000 miles and now the passengers side is rusted through"

"The floor boards are completely rusted out and there is rust developing in both rear quarter panels"

Mitri D., PA (2006 Nissan Altima SE 3.5-L V6)

"Floor pan rusted out. Expensive repair negotiated to $1200. Did some research and found this is a known problem by Nissan. They even have a repair kit for it! But they would not stand behind the vehicle. I will never buy a Nissan again. I've had defects turn up on Hondas and Saab (years ago) and they've always made good on their products"

Linda D., MA (2006 Nissan Altima SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The bottom of the frame - under the driver and passenger floor boards completely rusted out. Water would come through the floor in bad storms and when it snowed"

Anonymous, MN (2006 Nissan Altima SL 3.5-L V6)

"The floorboard on the driver side completely rusted through. You could see the carpet from the bottom of the car. I was not aware of this until a mechanic pointed it out to me. Nissan did not consider this well known defect a serious problem, and although this was a documented issue with the 2006 Nissan Altima, Nissan refused to do a recall or provide repairs. In my opinion, this could have led to a serious problem, for example, in a front end crash, the compromised integrity of the floorboard could have caused serious injury. It cost me nearly $1,000 to get the floorboard properly repaired. As a result of the indifference Nissan showed regarding this documented problem, I would never purchase another Nissan product, which is unfortunate, because I purchased the car new in 2006 and was otherwise very happy and satisfied with it (despite the recall on the car that occurred a week or two after I bought it)."

Anonymous, NJ (2006 Nissan Altima Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Under carriage rusts through and the fix is expensive"

Anonymous, PA (2006 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Floor panels on driver and passenger side rusted through. Body shop cut out rusted areas, welded in new panels and undercoated. Tied up 3 days and $300"

Jay P., ME (2006 Nissan Altima 2.5 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Have been told by dealer that the oil pan is rusted & needs replacing. Was told last Aug that the front floorboards are rusted out & must be repaired or won't pass the next inspection"

Anonymous, MA (2006 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This Altima has experienced rust in the floorboard, 1 one location thus far, resulting in a 4" radius hole. From the exterior of the car, one can push on the floorboard lining inside the cabin"

Anonymous, IL (2006 Nissan Altima SE 3.5-L V6)

"FRONT SEAT FLOOR PANELS RUSTED THROUGH, BOTH SIDES. CONSIDERED A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. SHEET METAL REPAIR REQUIRED"

David R., IN (2006 Nissan Altima SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Floor rusted out in front - both sides."

John W., KS (2006 Nissan Altima 2.5 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"2016. The drivers side floorboard underneath rusted out leaving a sizeable hole that cost me $1100.00 to get repaired. Nissan refused to compensate me."

Michael M., PA (2006 Nissan Altima 2.5 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The floor boards are rusting out on the car. This is a known problem on this year Nissan that Nissan will do nothing about. Also the heat is very weak in the car. Another known problem that Nissan will do nothing about."

"Car was 8 years old when brakes needed replacing. Normal wear & tear"

Linda S., CO (2006 Nissan Altima SE 3.5-L V6)

"Actually could have gone awhile longer, but had them replaced because it was cheaper to have them replaced when had the rotors replaced."

D B., TN (2006 Nissan Altima 2.5 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Parking brake

"Rear brake pads/rotors repaired at Midas but they failed to set/adjust the parking brake. This led to a minor fender bender when the parking brake was supposedly fully engaged but the car rolled backwards into another car"

Anonymous, MA (2006 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Premature brake wear

"Rear brakes need replacing more frequently than they should. Also, another issue was the engine mounts were broken and needed to be replaced"

Linda C., NJ (2006 Nissan Altima 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"They need to be replaced quite often. The replacements Nissan uses are super squeaky. You need to buy expensive parts from outside dealers to make it stop"

Anonymous, PA (2006 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Brakes needed replacing quite often"

Joseph N., ON (2006 Nissan Altima SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Rotors

"After two sets of front wheel rotors were installed by a independent repair shop which lasted only 3-4 months before they started pulsing, I took the car to a Nissan dealer who installed factory rotors on the front. It's been a year and I've had no further problems."

Anonymous, IN (2006 Nissan Altima SE 3.5-L V6)

"Rotors were worn through normal wear requiring replacement"

Anonymous, IN (2006 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, MA (2006 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I went through two sets of after-market front rotors. Both pair warped within 3-5 months after installation. I now had genuine Nissan rotors installed by a dealer. So far, so good, but they are only 2 months old. Prior to all of this, my original rotors lasted years."

Paul D., MA (2006 Nissan Altima SE 3.5-L V6)
