The Altima has good fuel economy and standard stability control. The first thing a driver will notice is the responsive engine and seamless transmission. Once under way, the composed ride and quiet cabin make another lasting impression. Although it's not a sports sedan, the Altima is responsive and pleasant to drive. Controls are easy to reach, simple to use and the interior is neatly finished.

What Owners Say

"I am 5'10" tall but the seat at its highest only allows me to look at a flat road through the bottom 1/4 of the windshield--too low! Also the left rear view mirror blocks my view especially in parking areas, causing me to sometimes hit curbs while turning into parking spaces."

ARLENE F., CA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Sluggish and borderline unsafe. The CVT just doesn't cut it."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Acceleration is excellent, as is breaking. However power delivery is somewhat uneven due to the design of the transmission."

CHRIS O., IL (2012 Nissan Altima)

"I hate the loud sound that the engine makes when I accelerate the car. I assume this is due to the CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission). It's very annoying to me."

THOMAS A., NC (2012 Nissan Altima)

"acceleration Even though our Altima is a 'four banger', when I put my foot to the floor, the engine & transmission conspire to move the car quickly. ride It's ok for a family sedan, but I was used to a Mazda MX-6, so the ride & handling feel mushy."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Very stable on the road but acceleration is not that great when starting from rest"

MOHSEN B., ON (2012 Nissan Altima)

"gas mileage, acceleration & reliability"

RUSSELLL G., TN (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Acceleration a bit sluggish with the CVT transmission; would probably be better with a manual. Handling is adequate in a warm climate - can't say whether this would handle as well in a snowy, cold climate"

VIVIAN R., TX (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Handles real well and controlled transmission works amazing."

DAVID W., VA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The v6 engine is powerful so it is a stealth fast car. The cvt is not a great choice for transmissions, but using manual mode makes up for it a bit. It is also a good car for taking long trips in. Our 3rd car is an SUV (Toyota highlanderv6). It is good for taking the kids to college because of its capacity, but on long trips it is irritatingly harsh and noisy."

MARK C., TX (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Acceleration is GREAT. car tends to drift on corners and not hold the road."

Anonymous, OR (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The acceleration is moderate with the CVT. Top end is fine but it takes a while to get there. Fuel performance is pretty good."

Anonymous, NL (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Excellent acceleration and handling."

JAMES B., FL (2012 Nissan Altima)

"While getting great gas mileage, acceleration and handling are very good. Trips usually 40 mpg"

ED G., OH (2012 Nissan Altima)

"For the size of the engine and a 6 speed man. tranny Excellent. handles very well even under hard excelleration"

PAUL H., ON (2012 Nissan Altima)

"It's candy apple red pocket rocket that stops on a dime."

STEPHEN T., TX (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Brakes have always squeaked in the morning during the first 10 minutes of driving. Told dealer about it. They said it would go away. It has not."

KENNETH G., WI (2012 Nissan Altima)

"This car is actually fun to drive, except for the torque steer. Acceleration is quick and steering is true."

ROBERT N., CA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Hard acceleration is noisy. Coming to a stop engine braking slows the car too much. Brakes are touchy and grabby."

Anonymous, IL (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Coup 3.5sr 6 speed manual. Do not compare with lesser altima,s Very fast. Corners well.plenty low rpm torque so that you do not have to keep changing gears unless you need performance."

Anonymous, IN (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Handling and acceleration are great! Enjoy how stingy it is using gas! Good looking design and comfort!"

DON M., GA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Quick and responsive for a sedan, surprisingly fun to drive. Not bad on long trips either, we've gone from Maine to Florida straight through 3 times and it just keeps cruising right along."

SEAN B., ME (2012 Nissan Altima)

"easy handling and very quick starts."

CHARLES B., NJ (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Repeated problems with car failing to start. Now on my fourth battery. Longest any battery has lasted is 18 months. Last battery was 8 year battery and failed within 3 months. Nissan dealership unable to locate source of failure."

Anonymous, AZ (2012 Nissan Altima)

"overall it has served me well for the last 38000 miles .good acceleration, good brakes, good handling."

SUMAN R., VA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The 2.5L engine has plenty of power for my needs, both city and highway. The coupe handles well on a variety of roads and takes corners with confidence."

JOHN K., MD (2012 Nissan Altima)

"good acceleration, handles curves well , good speed on steep hills"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Poor acceleration due to CVT and four cylinder engine. Engine roars on acceleration while car slowly moves. Car tends to wander even though I have had 4-wheel alignments done."

FRANK H., VA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"We got the 2.5 liter engine which was a good choice since the car goes up hills and mountain roads without any slowing. My Saturn which I had owned previously only had a 2.0 liter engine and would choke on the same roads"

JUDY C., AZ (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Compared to my 2015 Nissan Altima, the gas mileage for city driving is disappointing. Current tank is showing about 16 mpg for a 2.5 four cylinder. It should at least be in the mid 20s. Acceleration is great and relatively smooth ride. This is an Altima SL."

John P., TX (2012 Nissan Altima)

"It has a six speed standard and only a 2.5 L engine but when you drop it in the fourth it can excellerate and you are able to pass other vehicles quickly and safely"

Paul H., ON (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The V6 engine is a detuned version of the 350z I used to have so it is a powerful engine. However, the Altima is front wheel drive so it is delicate to use the engine when turning or going thru twisty sections because of torque steer from the powerful engine. Handling is always compromised by front wheel drive."

Mark C., TX (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Amazing acceleration for a four cylinder engine. Good handling."

M A., NJ (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Acceleration is excellent and handling is crisp. I've never had an unpredictable handle in this vehicle."

Patrick W., FL (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Handling and acceleration are very good. CVT shifts smoothly."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The Altima can be sluggish at times on acceleration. Not sure if from the CVT transmission or the motor lacking power. The car drives and handles well overall."

Robert S., OH (2012 Nissan Altima)

"It is very sharp in corners, it never feels underpowered. It is very responsive to the gas pedal and steering wheel inputs. It has a sporty driving feeling."

Hamed S., ON (2012 Nissan Altima)

"For a four cylinder engine is very responsive and handling is predictable."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Nissan Altima)

"There is a serious issue of blind spots on both the driver side and passenger side even though I have added extra mirrors it is a continuous problem"

Kathleen A., CA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Altima 3.5 model, has good acceration and power. Handles very well."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Acceleration is normal. Handling is much easier then what we thought."

Juan V., TX (2012 Nissan Altima)

"A comfortable drive. Not exceptional but generally satisfying. My wife won't let me drive it anymore because she wants it for herself."

Anonymous, MD (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Acceleration is great for a 4 cylinder car. Handling is smooth at all speeds. Fun car to drive"

Pat K., GA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Good acceleration and handling"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Continuously variable transmission is smooth and takes a little getting used to."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Nissan Altima)

"I really like the way the car drives in town and on the highway. The car just seems to fit me and I feel comfortable driving it. I like the CVT transmission and that it is not hunting around and shifting gears all the time like others."

J W., WA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The transmission (CVS) takes a bit getting used to but works great. Handling is OK for a vehicle in this class."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Good acceleration for a four cyclinder"

Anonymous, TX (2012 Nissan Altima)

"quick as a rabbit and very responsive"

Anonymous, OR (2012 Nissan Altima)

"This vehicle has a lot of power and a ton of acceleration. The handling in suburb. Very smooth ride."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"I am amazed at how well it accelerates given it is a four cyclinder car! But the steering is too stiff. I also own a 1999 Nissan Frontier pickup and it has much nicer steering than the Altima. I don't understand how that can be but that is the way it is."

Ricki P., OR (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Good acceleration for a 4 cyc engine"

William M., LA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Acceleration for a 4 cylinder is very good, handling is better than Camry."

Robert S., MN (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Great acceleration and handling"

Steve D., TN (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Quick, smooth acceleration, predictable performance on most road conditions, powerful brakes and a CVT that keeps speeds under control going down hills makes driveabilty high."

William B., NC (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Acceleration is not great, just adequate, The ride is gentle but too soft. It often feels like I'm in a rowboat in the ocean. I find it somewhat difficult to keep it running in a straight line. The Automatic Lights feature does not turn lights on in low light levels and there is no headlight indicator. Both are very irritating."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The car accelerates quickly and handles well however the CVT transmission took a while to get used to."

Robert B., ON (2012 Nissan Altima)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The drivers seat causes back ache after longer driving due to poor lumbar support. Road noise can be very bad on roads that are not smooth."

JIM B., WA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Sits lower to the ground than I like. Possible attempt to make it sporty by Nissan."

KEN M., IL (2012 Nissan Altima)

"very large seats stop at my knee. most cars seats stop mid thigh"

SUSAN A., FL (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The seats are extremely uncomfortable compared to the previous model. The climate control is very hard to adjust."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Greetings ... seats We bought a 'fully loaded' Altima, yet we could not purchase a vehicle with a power passenger seat. The leather 'trimmed' seats are comfortable, good looking, and easy to clean, except when seeds or sand get stuck in the seams. climate control It isn't easy to see if the Automatic climate control or Air Conditioning lamps are lit, from the driver's seat. This is a minor hazard. noise This is one of the weakest areas of performance of the car; there is too much tire & wind"

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The front seats could be more comfortable. We drive 5 hours one way sometimes, and our backs and legs get stiff after about 3 hours (even after at least one stop to get out of the car). The rear seat is even less comfortable. I am 6 feet tall, and cannot ride in the back seat area for more than 1 hour without experiencing discomfort.."

JEFFREY F., NY (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Excessive roof noise when raining due to little or no sound damping insulation."

D E., LA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Ater 30 minutes my back was killing me."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Seats comfortable; climate control does not handle the high humidity and heat of the Gulf Coast as well; engine moans when one presses the accelerator; ride is adequate"

VIVIAN R., TX (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Seats are firm and comfortable, and although not "sporty" in the sense of traditional sport/racing seats, they hold the driver in place better than the average, softer, less-firm seats. The climate control is simple and accurate. The rise noise is relatively quiet, although compared to our new 2015 Subaru Legacy its rather loud. The ride itself is very smooth, although again, compared to the Subaru Legacy, rather rough. So ride noise/suspension as far as "softness" goes, this might be the lowest"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Ac pumps super cold, base line sound system works well, seats are firm but comfy, tons of interior space"

SEAN B., ME (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The seating is pretty stiff and uncomfortable, and is not conducive to a long trip. The noise from under the hood and wheel wells is far too loud. These areas need some kind of sound deadening. Very disappointing, These have made me very unlikely to buy another Altima."

ROBERT M., WA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Seats, ride, and AC"

MOHSEN B., ON (2012 Nissan Altima)

"outside noise and pedals too close together"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Nissan Altima)

Anonymous, MA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Quiet, smooth ride on the highway. Even my parents complimented the ride. Air conditioning is very strong and cools the car quickly."

GILBERT M., ON (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Seats are very comfortable and easy to adjust. The only complaint I have is the seats are so low to the ground, I just about have to roll out of the car to get out."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Nissan Altima)

Anonymous, PA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The only negative is that the heater is insufficient at the floor level and the dealer claims its a design issue."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Loved the car at first glance. After 10 minute test ride, was concerned that legally-mandated head support put my head and neck in a position that seriously aggravated arthritis pain and headaches. Read on internet about possible "adjustments" I could make to head support. Bought car, "modified" support and drive without pain. I don't recommend this approach for other people, but my only other option seemed to be buying a very old car to replace my very old car (i.e., no solution at all)."

SANDRA K., NC (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The way the seat is tilted on the passenger side is very uncomfortable. Not the back of the seat but the seat itself is kind of tilted down so that you can not get your legs comfortable if you are in the car for a lonf period of time."

PAULA N., ON (2012 Nissan Altima)

"The seats are comfortable, but don't like the road noise. always check the windows because it sounds like they might be open a crack, hear the wind!"

DOROTHY W., AL (2012 Nissan Altima)

"My wife finds the seats very comfortable. Me, not so much. However, we prefer this car to the Prius on long road trips mainly because there is less road noise."

M A., NJ (2012 Nissan Altima)

"It is a good basic car, but not one that I would want for a primary vehicle."

Jimmy M., PA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"We've had this car for more than five years, but this summer took it on a couple of long road trips and I had to stop at one point to get a pillow to put behind the small of my back because it has no lumbar support. I've not ever worried about that when reading CR reviews, but that will have to change."

The therapist asked me what kind of car I drove. When I told him, he said the Altima was causing my back pain. I bought a lumbar pillow and it definitely helps."

"The door linings and upholstery are very cheap and poor. After only 3000 miles they had worn out."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Nissan Altima)

"This car is shoddily made in the interior. At 2000 miles the rubber door gasket had already disintegrated and the replacement has now disintegrated at 10,000 miles. "For starting price around low 20,000's, the car has been reliable from an overall car standpoint. No engine or other issues with what is needed in a car. The electronics have been a big issue. Keyless entry on doors has gone out and had to be replaced. Cost of $1,500 in order to fix all doors. Pain not fixing because you have to remove key from inside key FOB and manually open each door from the inside."

Brian D., CA (2012 Nissan Altima)

"Good reliability combined with a sleek modern exterior, high-tech equipment, consistent high fuel economy and an airy, comfortable interior all together make it an ideal car to own. We plan to buy another Altima if/when this one needs to be replaced."

Percentage of owners who would definitely purchase that same vehicle again. Owner-satisfaction Ratings are determined by the percentage of those who answered "definitely yes" to the question asked by the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?". If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
