Despite a few high points, this iteration of the Nissan Altima is not competitive among midsized sedans. In a segment brimming with better cars, the Altima is a lackluster choice, ranking below  its competitors with a humdrum driving experience. Among its virtues are a roomy rear seat and good fuel economy. That said, with the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder, we measured an impressive 31 mpg overall.

What Owners Say

"Noisy power steering"

Roman R., IN (2013 Nissan Altima)

"At first I had my doubts about the Continously Variable Transmission (CVT), but after taking a 500-mile trip in it, I found that I like the way it transfers power to the wheels in traffic. And, Nissan recently asked us to come in so they could make an adjustment that will lengthen the service life of the CVT drive belt. They gave us a free 60,000 mile warranty on the drive train. I don't know if they are still doing this or not; it may be because 2013 was I believe the first year of this second-..."

Larry L., TX (2013 Nissan Altima)

"It accelerates very well for it's engine size and class. Gas mileage is also excellent. It is a winning combination! It also corners well for a midsize family sedan. There is an annoying rattle at 1500 rpm however."

Clyde H., IN (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Drives nice, one sits higher and able to see more traffic. The start up however is lagging, once up to speed it's easy to accelerate."

Anonymous, IL (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Great acceleration and very good highway mileage, about 38 mpg."

Francis W., PA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Sluggish handling. Poor acceleration."

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Nissan Altima)

"For a large (even though it is classified as a 'mid-size') car it has good handling and a very comfortable ride. The acceleration is very good for a car this size with a 2.5L 4 cylinder engine. City fuel economy is less than expected at 22-23 mpg. On short highway trips it showed 38 mpg which is as rated."

Anonymous, GA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"acceleration and handling are very good, along with the ride"

Bruce G., NY (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The transmission is okay, but it does not shift smoothly between gears as you accelerate. The engine itself runs well otherwise."

Gary C., CA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"I think it accelerates quite well for the horsepower it has. It gets great gas mileage and it handles cornering well."

Sean F., AZ (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Have had no bad experiences."

Anonymous, FL (2013 Nissan Altima)

"- when new it rode quite and with smooth acceleration. - at 40 K miles the transmission was replaced, the acceleration was slower, tase mileage dropped by4 or 5 MPG and it rode differently"

"The most powerful, most economical, most responsive 4 cylinder engine I ha ever driven."

Thomas R., MO (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Engine or transmission is very noisy when accelerating."

Anonymous, OH (2013 Nissan Altima)

"It accelerates smoothly and handles well. I appreciate the blind spot warning system and rear view camera. The lane departure warning is less useful but I’d feel safer on long drives for having it."

Anonymous, MD (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Acceleration needs to be better to handle the typical demands of city driving."

Anonymous, SC (2013 Nissan Altima)

"I do not care for the CVT transmission. I would rather have conventional automatic transmission with changing gears. The fuel economy (MPG) is very good, especially on the road."

Raymond H., KY (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Sporty, good looking outside. Not so comfortable in long trip, esp. with breezing noice."

Kwan C., CA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Driving is a mixed bag. I have the V6 engine, which is plenty powerful - more than necessary - and quiet and smooth in the acceleration process. The CVT transmission is super - I love it! But handling is average. Adequate, but not up to the best standards."

Barbara J., IN (2013 Nissan Altima)

Francis W., PA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Very fast....CVT does a great job of getting the most out of the engine. Nice handling for a sedan."

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The Nissan Altima handles like a dream. The steering is quite tight, as expected in a "sport" style car. The 2.4 4 cylinder has plenty of power and has great mpg. I don't see the need for the bigger 6 cylinder."

James M., NY (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Really quick and responsive - I’m very confident in the acceleration on the highway"

Kyle H., PA (2013 Nissan Altima)

Anonymous, AZ (2013 Nissan Altima)

"My main concern was gas mileage, so I went with 4 cylinder. Of course this sacrifices performance, especially compared to the Maxima we owned before this. While it is not a top performer it has been satisfactory."

Michael T., CO (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Smooth with CrVS tranny"

Frederick S., NY (2013 Nissan Altima)

"accelerates like a bullet when you need it but handling is not stable. very light and when trying to maneuver at high speeds, response is erratic and unpredictable."

Anonymous, NC (2013 Nissan Altima)

"CVT transmission makes for smooth driving"

Anonymous, RI (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Previously answered"

Marvin S., FL (2013 Nissan Altima)

"CVT gives the right amount of acceleration and shifts smoothly. It drives nice and smooth on turns."

Bill M., NC (2013 Nissan Altima)

"I purchased the Altima with the 3.5 liter v6 engine and even with a CVT that car drives faster than some sports cars. That car also came with wider tires which also helps in braking and grip during acceleration. For the price I paid out the door for that car I am very satisfied with the performance. I did have to have the transmission replaced once because it would cause the entire car to shake violently during low speed and low RPM driving. Even after it was replaced, it had to be reprogrammed. Other than that the acceleration and handling has been great."

Baynazier A., AZ (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Excellent exceleration for a 2.5... a lot of transmission noise based on the CVT... handling is good for the vehicle, it’s not as crisp as European or higher dollar American cars..."

Eddie N., IA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Acceleration is good for a 2.5L engine"

Steven J., VA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Very fast accelration"

Anonymous, MO (2013 Nissan Altima)

Anonymous, IL (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The Altima is not an enthusiast car. It does offer nice comfortable, quiet, and, so far, reliable transportation. The ride reminds me of a big luxury car of the 60's and 70's that my dad would have owned though it has a better steering and braking and safety."

DAN Q., VA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The CVT makes it a very smooth car to drive."

HAROLD S., IA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The stearing is too-touchy. I worry that if I swerved to avoid an accident I would flip or roll the car."

RYAN N., UT (2013 Nissan Altima)

"It's a little noisy on the highway."

SAM H., TX (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Very good in snow."

JAMES M., NY (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Great gas mileage. Its very hard to see on the sides and backing up one cannot see well. One does not need to depend on the backup cam all the time. I have cams on the side of my Altima but still almost have accidents. One sits to low in the car even when seat is up somewhat high."

Anonymous, MS (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The only challenge was adapting to the CVT and the higher revolutions of the engine during acceleration. I find the acceleration excellent considering it is a 2.5 engine. Handling has been great."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Mpg. Is outstanding. We often get 40+ mpg on the highway. On long trips I keep my speed as nearly as posible at 67 . I am always amazed that I do that well.cruise control helps a lot."

BOB B., IL (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Handles extremely well. A pleasure to drive."

LES S., NC (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The steering is "heavy" which is very tiring for my hands and wrists.. I dread driving it for long periods because of this."

DONNA P., TN (2013 Nissan Altima)

"My Altima is such a pleasure to drive on long trips. With the blind spot indicators and other safety factors, I can feel more relaxed while driving. The fuel economy is also great both in city and on long trips. Have had the vehicle for three years and have not experienced any major problems."

GERALD N., LA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"With the variable rate transmission the first time I did a fast acceleration merge with traffic was horrifying. where an automatic trans when you drop plant the accelerator kicks down and away you go. With the VST the computer says humm if I just hammer I'll harm the trans so I'll drop to an idle shift gears and then open acceleration. My heart lept into my throat as I am at idle at 55 and the traffic I just jumped into was 65-70."

JAMES W., CA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Almost peppy. Needs more pick up from stop. Lots more for passing."

E B., NC (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Its 4-cylinder engine is more than adequate and the rides belies its light weight. It's a quiet vehicle."

KENNETH M., NY (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Excellent for a 4 Cyl."

Anonymous, BC (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Great acceleration, out standing breaking system, very responsive."

Anonymous, VA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"This car for a 4 cylinder, runs great. Plenty of power"

LARRY F., TX (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Acceleration is great and is faster than some sports cars"

CAMERON M., AZ (2013 Nissan Altima)

"I love my CVT!!! It runs responsively and smoothly. Nissan has it nailed! V6 acceleration is super! However, handling leaves much to be desired. With stock tires (Dunlop Sport 7000) I was often correcting the steering, especially when going into a curve. This may be fixed now, with better tires installed (Pirelli Cinturato P7 A/S+). So far (500 miles), with the new tires, handling is much improved."

GEORGE R., NJ (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Good highway mileage 40+ miles per gal"

Anonymous, OH (2013 Nissan Altima)

"I bought this car over the Accord, Camry, which is at the top of my list, body style but most of all is the driver seat comfort. The only thing I don't like is the passenger seat is not power, and it lacks a little power but not bad for a 4 cylinder."

Anonymous, OH (2013 Nissan Altima)

"I love the CVS transmission. Very quick acceleration and is very smooth"

Anonymous, IA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"car has tremendous acceleration and very responsive"

ERIC L., GA (2013 Nissan Altima)

RICHARD K., OH (2013 Nissan Altima)

Relatively quiet ride average 63 Db on highway. No wind noise at all. Climate control is just right."

JAY H., FL (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The NASA designed seat are outstanding. I can drive 8-10 hours without any back issues"

Anonymous, OH (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Since there is an issue with my leg, the seating has been very comfortable."

Anonymous, KY (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The Nissan drivers seat is the most comfortable of the 2.it is wider and deeper than the Camry."

IVAN M., NY (2013 Nissan Altima)

"My 3 biggest complaints, 1. Head rest is too far forward forcing my head into an uncomfortable downward facing position. No way to adjust it. 2. High pitched whine from the power steering. Closest example would be 'coil whine' from electronic equipment. 3. Vibration in engine between 1200-1500 RPM at all speeds. Alternator 'fix' minimizes the vibration but doesn't eliminate it."

MICHAEL F., PA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The seats could use better adjustments for comfort and have a cooling feature for hot summer days."

Anonymous, MN (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The driver and passenger seats are extremely comfortable. Long distance driving with few stops and I never got uncomfortable at all. Very pleased with the design and feel."

Anonymous, OR (2013 Nissan Altima)

"This is a very comfortable car with very good climate control. Our only complaint relates to wind noise which varies with the direction and speed of outside wind."

Anonymous, MN (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The car was damaged by hail, but this was not disclosed at purchase. The repairs pre-purchase resulted in constant rattling in the sunroof area and also there are numerous holes drilled under the hood and into side door panel which were used to remove the hail dents."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Nissan Altima)

Anonymous, NH (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Seats very comfortable. Lots of rear seat leg room. Lots of trunk space."

Anonymous, MA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Leather seats are among the most comfortable I have ever owned, but I would like memory for the seat adjustment and a powered seat adjustment for the passenger. Passengers tell me that the rear seat is especially comfortable. Ride is very smooth (but can be helped over bumps by better tires). Road noise is low. Engine noise (V6) and wind noise are very low. Climate control works as expected."

GEORGE R., NJ (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The Altima developed a high whine, caused by the electric steering, shortly after I bought it. I took it back five times to be fixed but it never was---very disappointing."

GERRY G., PA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Zero gravity seats are very comfortable."

"The seats and headrests are extremely comfortable"

JOSEPH S., FL (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Wind noise from outside mirrors Center air vents can not be shut of completely Acceleration is very good for a 4 cyl. Gas consumption is very good , on flat road at 110 km hr about 5.6 L per 100 Km"

Jay H., FL (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Great price for the quality"

Anonymous, OK (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The car was very well priced and the gas mileage is outstanding."

Anonymous, MD (2013 Nissan Altima)

"I bought my Camry less than a year before we bought the wife's Altima, and I have to say that we like EVERYTHING better about the Altima! It is quieter, peppier (perhaps due to the CVT tranny?), more comfortable on a trip, has better radio controls, and is more fun to drive."

Larry L., TX (2013 Nissan Altima)

"TOO MANY RECALLS"

Anonymous, MD (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Hwy driving (not stop and go) I was getting up to 32 MPG. The pickup is more than satisfactory, especially when I need it (merging). Regular gas helps with the economy. The car is comfortable to drive and relatively quiet."

Marvin S., FL (2013 Nissan Altima)

"It is a lot of car for the buck. I still love the way it looks, rides, accelerates, and the mpg on the highway."

Barbara B., MN (2013 Nissan Altima)

"I have driven this vehicle across the desert at 85 mph in Texas, up mountains in the western states and just about the worst dirt and gravel roads in New Mexico and I still average 35 mpg in town and 39 on the highway. I haven't had any problems. Just the recommended service from the dealer is all I've had done to the car."

Sean F., AZ (2013 Nissan Altima)

"I felt like I got a lot of car when I bought my Altima. I looked at other brands and definitely felt like I got a good deal."

"The performance of the 6 compared to the 4 is worth the extra you pay for gas. I was disappointed in how short a while the tires lasted on the car. They had to be changed at 60,000 KM."

Trevor Y., AB (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Many safety features for the money. Larger vehicle feels safer on 80 94. Get 38 to 40 real miles per gallon on the highway."

Ben N., SC (2013 Nissan Altima)

"In Puerto Rico the price you pay for Altima is too high and the trade-in is too low as years pass by."

Anonymous, PR (2013 Nissan Altima)

"I bought the car after the hurricane Sandy destroyed my old car. They gave me the employees discount plus another factor for a decent price. I used to drive 12,000 miles a year to work this amount of mileage was to much for most standard car models."

Anonymous, NY (2013 Nissan Altima)

"For the money, the Altima is an excellent value. It is a good sized vehicle that gets exceptional gas mileage."

Anonymous, NC (2013 Nissan Altima)

"The car is fine, which is the problem. For the same money, comparable trims of different brands may be more impressive. Nothing stands out with this one as being noteworthy."

Ian V., CA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Leather seating, climate control, great sound system and lots of other bells and whistles for $27500? What a deal? I did negotiate a cash deal at dealer invoice."

Sandra K., NY (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Very poor quality paint and finish. Very poor dealer support."

Scott C., AB (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Wonderful driver's seat, good mpg, absolutely nothing but routine maintenance done to the car since new. No repairs. (Did take to dealer for minor recalls) Now has 104,000 miles."

Anonymous, MO (2013 Nissan Altima)

"When new it was good and warranty covered most repairs except for Sun visor when out of warranty even though I had an extended warranty. The paint is fading after only 5 years."

Jack V., FL (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Value is poor - I never should have purchased a first model year vehicle. Learned my lesson. While we like the car and the performance it has been recalled too many times to remember and the book value as well as the CR analysis shows it is not a good model year to buy as a used car."

Michael K., PA (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Now 5 years old, the car operates with few or no problems and it's construction and appointments are still in good condition. No problems with the paint nor the fit in the interior. The Navigation system operates reliably and outperforms those of my other, much newer, auto."

K S., DE (2013 Nissan Altima)

"This is a very decent midsize car for around 20k. For midsize car it has very good mileage 30mpg for city/hw driving and 35mpg for hw, stylish look, decent acceleration."

PAVEL D., CO (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Recall services"

Anonymous, MD (2013 Nissan Altima)

"I test drove 5 of 6 comparative cars in this class before buying my used Altima. I was apprehensive because of CR's "Do Not Buy' list rating for the '13 Altima, I can say after 18 months of ownership this has been one great vehicle, and the MPG is outstanding. Even the local dealer (that I didn't buy from) was excellent handling minor recall notices for the hood latch and passenger airbag indicator."

BARRY R., OH (2013 Nissan Altima)

"I bought what I call a strip-down model. It was an impulse buy. I should have gotten leather, back-up and GPS. I was stupid. But, this car has mighty power to get- up- and- go to pass vehicles, rigs, and change lanes in tight places. And, I get compliments for the cayenne red color. Beautiful. Still love my car."

ANGELA C., OK (2013 Nissan Altima)

"When buying the Nissan Altima many amenities are included with the selected package and there is no need to add on or upgrade to a more costly package especially if the upgrade has items you don't care about. This is the second Altima I have owned and both included excellent value for the price."

RAYMOND H., KY (2013 Nissan Altima)

"Load road noise. Passenger seat sits too low. Good value for the lower model."

Anonymous, NY (2013 Nissan Altima)

"In addition to a catastrophic steering failure and the failure of the hood latch ( which could have caused an accident by the hood flying up against the windshield), I never got the MPG that was advertised (28 MPG city; 38 Highway). I did occasionally get 38 MPG on the highway, but about 18-19 MPG in the city (Staten Island, N.Y.), where most of my driving took place."
