Dating back to 2005, the compact Frontier pickup truck shares a platform with the discontinued Xterra SUV and the previous-generation larger Titan pickup. In our tests we found the Frontier to be quick and relatively nimble, with a stiff though tolerable ride. The strong 4.0-liter V6 revved smoothly and felt very strong, but fuel economy was a decidedly unimpressive 15 mpg overall.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Truck has great handling, good pick-up"

Anonymous, TN (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"The steering has no feedback and has no ability to return to center when the steering wheel is released."

Richard P., KY (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"lots of wind noise, transmission shifting seems undecided at times. Drives like a trash truck"

John W., PA (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"We've had this vehicle for about 2 months. It is now 3K miles until it's off warranty. Our own mechanic has gone over the vehicle and says all is well. So far it has handled very well, but we've not had the snow, etc. experience with it yet. The engine has remarkable get up and go. The size of the cab allows us to put carseats in the back seats. The truck is a comfortable vehicle for long rides (+4 hours)."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"very road worthy for a truck"

Robert C., NY (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Really zippy and handles good. Not sluggish like my earlier Kias or Hondas."

Sally C., TN (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"very good acceleration and handles well."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"turning radius"

Mike H., FL (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"What really stands out is how strong the engine is, it has amazing power and acceleration. I regularly tow a cargo trailer that is at the top end of what my Frontier is rated to pull. The Frontier pulls it well, even in mountains. Even with so much useful power, my Frontier still gets decent mileage when running empty and not towing."

Daniel F., GA (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"I dont like the turn radius. It is hard to park the truck"

Anonymous, NC (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"The Nissan Frontier has a frustratingly long turning radius."

Jeffrey L., TN (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Very good power and acceleration, but at expense of fuel economy"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Great acceleration. MPG is acceptable. Handles great."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Gas mileage."

Jim G., KY (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"I like the acceleration of the 6 cyl."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Nissan Frontier)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The Seats and the ride are very good . The noise level is standard as far as wind noise, the other noises I complained about were items I had inside the truck"

Bill A., CA (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"On long trips, there are issues with the driver’s seat The is no lumbar adjustments other than moving the entire seat. The seat deck gets very painful unless you stop every couple of hours."

Donald R., FL (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"I hate the fabric used for the seats. Its easily stained vs. the fabric on my 03 Tacoma. Both were the standard fabric. The waffle- like texture catches small crumbs etc. & is uncomfortable to sit on if youre wearing shorts!"

C P., NJ (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Ride is hard and stiff. Road noise is excessive even with windows closed."

Don B., UT (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"As a passenger, the cloth seats are very comfortable on my back. They are supportive and comfortable—not stiff or hard. I also like the ride—not bumpy."

Rebecca L., VA (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Seats ?? are very comfy, recline easily. No noticeable noise when traveling on the highway & the ride is excellent which is one of the reasons we bought our truck."

Mel C., BC (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"The gearshift is REALLY difficult/hard to move. Seats give me a backache after about an hour. Key/Ignition: can't see the hole without leaning around the steering wheel. Ride is smooth and quiet."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Did not offer 8 or 10 way passenger seats"

George L., TX (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Fun to drive, its quiet inside and visibility is good."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"a great upgrade from our 2011 colorado"

Robert C., NY (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"The new Frontiers are too big and too high. It is hard for us older folks to get in and out. Seems no one makes smaller trucks anymore. Knew we wanted another Frontier, but it is hard to climb up in."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Wind and road noise are way too high for any modern vehicle."

Richard P., KY (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Poor turning circle and difficult to park"

John W., CA (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"My pro 4x is very comfortable, rides better then most trucks and is smooth and quiet....for a truck."

Tom D., ME (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"the seats are very comfortable for a truck"

Anonymous, NC (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Very rough riding. rear cab noise is loud. Both rear doors rattle. Underneath the cab noise from the exhaust pipes rattle."

Clyde S., IN (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Very quiet."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"After driving a small pickup truck for many years the overall comfort level in the Frontier is so much better than what I was used to. Plus I can actually hear the radio on the freeway so the noise levels are much better too."

Jim G., KY (2017 Nissan Frontier)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"This is a very good truck for the price, good quality, very strong engine that tows trailers well but still gets decent gas mileage. Much cheaper and more options that the competion, but, still a quality truck. I'm very happy with my choice."

Daniel F., GA (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Compared to Toyota the same options would cost 8-10k more. Its hard to believe, but Nissan Frontier is the best value."

Tom D., ME (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"I spent 30,000 on it and felt that that was too much for a med size 2-wheel drive. Couldn't afford the 4-wheel drive and I really regret it."

Sally C., TN (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"My Nissan Frontier is a lot of truck for the money. It has all the bells and whistles I need and the price was very, very reasonable."

Jeffrey L., TN (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Excellent value, vehicle is loaded with tech and comfort items."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Nissan Frontier)

Anonymous, VA (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Best value among competitors for V6 with good towing capacity"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Cheaper, used to go from A to B"

Anne W., ON (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"I think the Frontier is a lot of back for the buck. Plenty of power, comfortable ride and practical features like a sliding rear view window and tailgate extender. Not the greatest as pay as payload capacity but that is not an issue for me."

Jim G., KY (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"Only small truck in the $20k price range"

Robert P., TN (2017 Nissan Frontier)

"With rebates and dealer discounts, I was able to buy a new 2017 Frontier for only slightly more than used 2015 Frontiers were selling for."
