Nissan Leaf

The new Leaf might seem to be an enticing electric vehicle at first blush. It offers decent--albeit limited--driving range and a low entry price. The base model is thousands less than the entry-level versions of the Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Model 3, even before federal or state tax incentives.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Driving an electric car is a whole new experience. The acceleration is smooth, quiet, and fast! It's hard to drive our Highlander after driving the Leaf."

Mike W., OR (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"It is extremely perky, the pick up is fantastic. Steering is easy. AC (in TEXAS) is immediately cold, cools down a hot car fast. There is nothing about this car that my husband and I don' like, except heated seats aren't an option - YET, I hope!"

Anonymous, TX (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"The safety package (lane assist, etc...) is excellent and I love the "e-pedal" - it takes a bit to get accustomed to, but it's a great way to drive. Love it. Acceleration and handling are both excellent."

Anonymous, VA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Love the effortless acceleration and overall smooth driving experience. It feels like I am floating on the road. I have more recently been trying the e-pedal option and have started to prefer this option for the majority of my driving but still like using a regular mode when needing to switch between drive and reverse, in parking lots, or when I want to accelerate quickly."

Anonymous, AZ (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Great acceleration and auto power braking is wonderful. Handling is hampered by lean."

Howard K., CA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Good acceleration, adequate handing, brilliant E-pedal!"

Peter V., RI (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"This car is so fun to drive. You know how when that super macho guy tries to cut you off in traffic, I leave him in the dust. Very satisfying. I am still learning the edges of it but the camera feature is greta for tight spaces."

Naomi B., CA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"It's supper smooth, and the acceleration is phenomenal (for a non-sporty 4-door hatchback). The handling feels a bit odd sometimes, but that's likely because of the aggressive deceleration with ePedal. Oh, and ePedal should be standard on all EVs and Plugin-EVs."

Anonymous, TX (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"The leaf is an electric car so it's very quiet, acceleration is very smooth and instant, I love the ebrake."

John M., NY (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Rolls off a stop with quiet smooth efficiency, and accelerates with ease even with eco setting. Handling and ride are fine. Don’t use steering assist as it gives annoying little jerks on the steering wheel constantly."

R H., ON (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Excellent balance of performance and handling."

Erin K., CA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"It accelerates with authority! The drive assist is nice, but not great. Epedel is slick."

Martin S., FL (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Excellent acceleration and handling due to low center of gravity"

Anonymous, TN (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Lively and responsive acceleration and handling. E-brake (1 pedal driving) is fun and makes me a better driver. I actually come to a full stop at stop signs now!"

Anthony A., ME (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"It has surprisingly good acceleration and sharp handling. The car accelerates and rides so smoothly you almost feel like your floating."

Kevin L., CO (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"While it’s not Tesla or even Bolt fast. It’s still much better then the average 5 passenger car."

Ralph J., MN (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"I love both the quietness of the Leaf and the instant response (torque) it has from a stop. I also like its regenerative braking."

W T., ID (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Superb excelleration even in Econ mode. Handling is smooth and responsive."

Anonymous, MN (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"LIKE DRIVING ON A CLOUD. NO NOISE. VERY SMOOTH RIDE"

Irv H., TN (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Very good acceleration. Very good handling, cornering, traction."

Anonymous, IL (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"acceleration is far better than any gas model I have ever owned"

Marvin R., VT (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"The acceleration is peppy when I need it and it's quite a bit more fun than the former Prius. Plus, since it's electric, I don't have to feel bad about actually using that acceleration."

Anonymous, WA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The seats in the SV trim lack adjustability and I have a difficult time getting comfortable. Furthermore the rear view mirror is awkwardly located on the windshield such that it creates a dangerous blind spot."

Kevin L., CO (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"very comfortable seats and quiet for city driving"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Road noise can be a little loud. The car is very quiet for the most part but at highway speeds road noise makes it difficult to understand the radio or some conversation."

Robert K., AZ (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"very comfortable seating. very low noise (no engine). somewhat high wind noise. very smooth ride."

Anonymous, IL (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"We have the SL model. The car is extremely quiet. Front seats are very comfortable. Don't understand what the big fuss about the lack of telescoping steering wheel, but for us, the seating and steering wheel position is perfect."

James F., HI (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Good ride for car this size. Smooth and comfortable."

Anonymous, MN (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Front seats are narrow, could be more comfortable"

Jonathan B., VT (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Seats very comfortable, car is extremely quiet, ride is very good."

Peter V., RI (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Very comfortable seats, great ride"

Steven H., CA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Seats are great, needs telescoping steering wheel column, and the center console rubs against driving leg (especially for tall drivers)"

Scott W., VA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"The lack of a telescoping steering wheel makes it a little uncomfortable to steer. Since I never planned on driving this car on long trips, it's not really a big deal, but just about every other car, including economy cars, has that feature standard. It would be nice for Nissan to make driving more comfortable. The center armrest is very small so my right arm can't rest on it while driving, also not a huge deal since it isn't a long range vehicle. Another bad thing is not having an illuminated door lock switch. For some reason, only the power mirror stalk switch is illuminated when the car is off which is very useless for opening doors at night. Seats are comfortable but I wish a lighter color interior is available other than the top level trim. I love the smooth, quiet, and refined way the car accelerates due to the electric drivetrain."

Steve R., ID (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"It is incredibly quiet (more so than the Leaf it replaced) and the leather seats are very comfortable - they support the driver well."

Anonymous, VA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Much quieter than the previous generation. Seats are much more comfortable than the Chevy Bolt ride is much more american than the BMW i3."

Ralph J., MN (2018 Nissan Leaf)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"There is very little maintenance requirements compared to an ICE auto. Not only has our fuel cost gone down by half, not having to spend the time at the gas station has a very satisfying feel. Knowing that the car recovers energy usually lost to breaking is also satisfying."

James F., HI (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"No gas! No oil changes! No engine or transmission repairs."

Martin S., FL (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"After federal tax rebate I got the premium model for the price of a base model sedan"

Scott W., VA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Plenty of trunk room and appointed like a luxury sedan"

Anonymous, AL (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"So far very good value. It's a pleasure not stopping at gas stations and charging it up is not a nuisance."

Anthony A., ME (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Maximum daily use is ~200 miles. After that, it is overheated and will not charge until it cools (6-8 hours) No battery cooling system. Nissan should have to buy them ALL back!"

John B., CA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"MSRP of $33,500. After Nissan incentives, dealer discount, and Federal ($7500) and State ($2500) tax credits, paid $16,279. Incredible car for that price."

Mike W., OR (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"I wanted a Tesla, my husband made me look at the Leaf. It is more comfortable, just as roomy, the back seats are more comfortable. I love our leaf. We do use it as our "in town" car and fight over who gets is vs our Lexus ES!"

Anonymous, TX (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Leased when first available. Difficult to get financial information before delivery. Poor incentive to lease. Very low residual at lease end. Felt pretty much screwed by Nissan Financial"

David G., KS (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Good dealer discount. Nissan finance incentives and federal tax credit make it an excellent value in addition to the advantages of electric power"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"The state tax exemption was great. Much better value than the Chevy Bolt or the still-not-available Testla Model 3."

Anonymous, WA (2018 Nissan Leaf)

"Does what I expected for the use that I needed (A highway 101 runabout."
