Producing an honest sports sedan has eluded Nissan for the last two decades. Unfortunately, the new Maxima still falls short of that promise. Although touted as a sporty four-door, the Maxima is nothing of the sort. Is it at least a convincingly luxurious large sedan? Sadly, the new Nissan falters as a haven of opulence, as well.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"The handling on this vehicle is amazing, only eclipsed by the feeling one feels when you jam the accelerator to the floor. Amazing!"

Jose G., MD (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"nice being able shift from Normal to Sports mode"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Superb acceleration, very responsive. Handling is OK."

Vincent R., MN (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Excellent"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Nissan Maxima)

Les S., NC (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"This might be the most fun I have had driving a car."

Ronnie K., CA (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Good acceleration and handling.. Love the sport mode button makes a big difference.."

Kevin N., FL (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Unlike many similarly comfortable cars, this car also DRIVES great--very fun, very responsive, lots of get up and go!! I feel very much in control, and it does everything I ask it to. Including speed up very quickly!"

Anonymous, KS (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Fun to drive - comfortable yet handles and accelerates like a sports car"

Mark A., TN (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"It's acceleration is smooth and can easily be "conservative" or "progressive." It's handling is pretty tight...was something I had to get used to after driving a larger SUV...but what some have complained about the steering being over sensitive, I have gotten used to and find it to be what I'll call "responsive" rather than "tight." I love the "normal" vs "sport" options available in my platinum level Maxima. It's easy to get the best of both worlds in this car!"

Wallace D., TX (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"pleasure to drive. Reacts immediately to driver input."

Richard E., VA (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Maxima Platinum has a very responsive and powerful engine; it accelerates very quickly and makes merging easy. The steering is very precise and is very responsive."

Stephen S., DE (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Powerful, responsive, great safety features"

Anonymous, VA (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Love the acceleration...4 door sport car."

Anonymous, TN (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Absolutely love the performance and ride of this vehicle"

Paul M., FL (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Handles excellent."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"My Maxima has plenty of power for acceleration and the handling is superb as well. Very strong, smooth ride that never feels like you're not in total control."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Extremely great acceleration. Never have to worry about acceleration"

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Drives very nice. Straight line acceleration is impressive. CVT transmission interesting."

William G., CA (2017 Nissan Maxima)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"All Good."

Anonymous, CO (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"1. Headrest juts too far forward for comfort 2. Side mirrors create a blind spot for spouse 3. Passenger front seat does not raise and lower 4. Noise and ride are excellent"

Mark C., VA (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"very good seats, high interior road noise, excellent and comfortable ride"

Vincent R., MN (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Seats provide great support. The cabin is quiet, the ride is comfortable. I like the option to choose sport mode, which improves acceleration and tightens up the play in the steering wheel."

Mark A., TN (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"The seats are extremely comfortable. They're heated and cooled. The seats provide very good comfort and support even for long drives."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"very little road noise unless the moonroof is open then there is a lot. Seats are super comfortable with lumbar support. Ride is smooth and nimble for a larger car."

Kathy T., MA (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Seat thigh support excellent but seat itself too soft."

S R., QC (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"The seats are extremely comfortable. Cooling and heating work very well. My only complaint is, I feel I'm not seeing the road ahead well enough. Also, the side view drivers mirrors block my view when making left hand turns."

Jose G., MD (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Seats very comfortable. My wife suffers from back pain and this is one of the most comfortable cars for long distance driving we've experienced. Only issue is a bit of road noise."

Jeffrey L., WA (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Car is difficult to get into and driver seat area is cramped. Window controls on driver door take up legroom."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Seats are heated / cooled on demand. Ride is smooth and seats are comfortable, even during long drives."

Stephen S., DE (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"It's AWESOMELY comfortable and adjustable! I'm short and can get really close without feeling like I'm going through the dashboard--the telescoping steering wheel is great. My husband is tall and can get farther back in this car than any other we've had, plus he LOVES the thigh support. I never want to get rid of this car!!"

Anonymous, KS (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"Front seats are very comfortable and well designed. The ride is pleasent but I have a random flapping noise that the dealer cannot see to identify."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"I LOVE my Maxima. It's fun to drive, very comfortable, quiet, and absorbs highway imperfections well. It's very responsive. Head room in the rear seat is limited, but is acceptable for the average height person. Seats are very comfortable. Styling of both the interior and exterior is awesome. Its very much a "cockpit" feel without feeling like you're "separated" from the rest of the car. It is a great car to simply cruise around in, but can also "punch it" easily when I want to incorporate a little fun into my driving. I've also been impressed with the gas mileage."

Wallace D., TX (2017 Nissan Maxima)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

"You get a lot of value for the money with a Maxima. It's a 4 door sport car for sure.."

Anonymous, TN (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"For the $40,00o price the Maxima Platinum is a best buy in my opinion. I read CR carefully and I think you were hard on your evaluation for the Maxima."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Nissan Maxima)

"n/a"

Richard E., VA (2017 Nissan Maxima)
