Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Both."

Anonymous, AZ (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Unfortunately, due to my husband's mishandling of not getting an urgent repair done on time, it damaged the gears which no longer shift smoothly. The repair would cost $1500 which is the same value of the car. We originally thought that the car would last a few more years, but now we plan to replace it in Sept."

MARIANNE K., CA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Comfortable, easy handling, superb vision."

ROBERT M., NJ (2002 Subaru Forester)

"it is ok as automatic car"

VICTOR H., NY (2002 Subaru Forester)

"The acceleration on my previous car, a 1997 Subaru Outback, kicked in quicker than it does on the 2002 Forester."

Anonymous, TX (2002 Subaru Forester)

"No Prolems"

Anonymous, OR (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Love the handling All Wheel Drive! When pulling out on slippery roads, no spinning tires, just goes where I point it. Loose gravel, it grabs and goes. And the road clearance great - I sometimes drive in parks with rough roads and hit fewer boulders than the folks with me."

MICHAEL W., MD (2002 Subaru Forester)

"acceleration is ok. The handling is still smooth and tight!"

Dennis F., WA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"The all-wheel drive system is invaluable in wet and snowy conditions, creating a stable drive. The versatility of space and cargo is a big plus. The boxer engine is an extremely well balanced engine requiring a smaller fly-wheel resulting in more acceleration and engine responsiveness."

Dave C., IL (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Acceleration and handling are still great even after 234000 miles."

Anonymous, GA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"It has been the greatest car for our Canadian climate. Handles just about any conditions, and with steadiness. We have a manual transmission, which helps."

L P., ON (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Very good handling. Feels safe. Very good acceleration and control"

Anonymous, OK (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Great car. Handles well."

Anonymous, MA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Solid little vehicle all around. Well made. Had head gasket issue repaired before I bought it. I replaced transmission at 108000 miles, even though Subaru dealership DID ALL scheduled maintenance as required. Extremely comfortable to drive. Car is amazing to drive in snow and ice. Like a snowshoe rabbit in snow with the all wheel drive. Most disappointed with fuel mileage for a vehicle of this size. Major drawback. Also had a severe performance issue, with a malfunctioning front o2 sensor..."

Anonymous, OH (2002 Subaru Forester)

"It accelerates wonderfully when needed. It sits comfortably if you are less than 6' tall (and i am only 5'1"). All accessories are reachable comfortably when driving. I can see out all my mirrors to almost all areas around my car, so backing up safely and well is great. i look forward to buying another Forester when i have to retire this one."

Anonymous, MI (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Predictable and solid"

Anonymous, CA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Reliable, handles well, and as all Subarus it is a very safe vehicle."

Lynn R., CA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"It is great on snow and ice. I have never had to take it in for an minor and major issues."

Anonymous, AK (2002 Subaru Forester)

"it is just a great little auto"

James P., CA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Great acceleration and handling."

Anonymous, NM (2002 Subaru Forester)

"comfortable drive"

Anonymous, ID (2002 Subaru Forester)

"4 cyl takes long time to get to speed."

Anonymous, KY (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Typically for Subaru, a solidly engineered vehicle. With the 2002 Forester, there is some hesitation before the vehicle begins acceleration. With my previous 1997 Outback, stomp the go pedal and it was off and running immediately."

Anonymous, TX (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Handling is great but the acceleration is poor."

Michael D., CA (2002 Subaru Forester)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Handles well, not noisy. I love this car"

EVELYN E., WA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"I want lumbar support now & as Forester has aged, the noise level of outside noise has increased. The ride is great, except for lack of lumbar support."

BARBARA K., AZ (2002 Subaru Forester)

"The seats are too low for comfort on long drives; specifically, your right leg falls to the side without support causing knee pain. Otherwise the seats provide excellent comfort."

CAREY B., IL (2002 Subaru Forester)

"noisy, seats not comfortable"

RAY J., TX (2002 Subaru Forester)

"road noise and wind noise can be loud at highway speed."

BOB R., WA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Comfortable seats and ride but weak heater at the feet."

Anonymous, CA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Seats very uncomfortable. Cause back aches."

M M., CA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Very noisy ride, otherwise good."

Anonymous, NY (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Maybe the car was designed for smaller driver. I'm not that tall (5' 11") but it always seemed that the seat was too short, front to back to support my legs comfortably on a long drive."

STEVE C., MI (2002 Subaru Forester)

"The road noise is very loud most of the time. Some road surfaces reduce the noise. there should be an option to reduce road noise."

Anonymous, WA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Seats in 2010 are too firm. Spartan basic feel to occupants.supportive, just a bit too hard to really enjoy a long trip."

Anonymous, OH (2002 Subaru Forester)

"When I got this car and for many years it was a very comfortable and quiet ride. Nothing better than after a day of skiing, riding with the seat heaters on! Lately the A/C compressor went out and they want over $500 bucks to fix it."

Anonymous, CA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Love everything except the amount of road noise. So noisy that it is hard to hear another person speaking."

Anonymous, WA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"View from the leather seats is great, almost like a pickup truck field of view but lower. Seats are supportive and plush without feeling hard at all. There is excellent room for front drivers and passengers, even those over 6' tall. I love the heated seats!"

Anonymous, PA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"The front seats are very comfortable especially on long drives. Air noise is bad and getting worse as the door seals deteriorate."

Rose D., CA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Amazing how comfortable the car still rides even at its age and mileage."

Anonymous, GA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Seat are somewhat comfortable. Horrible wind noise. The ride is rough as compared to a 2014 Forester."

Michael D., CA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Due to normal wear and tear."

Anonymous, NM (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Of cars that I've driven for long trips, this Subaru is by far the most comfortable for me. The seat-comfort is one reason that I have not considered replacing this 2002 car with a newer one."

Margaret K., NV (2002 Subaru Forester)

"The carpeting is thin and road noise is easily transmitted into the cabin. The seats are moderately comfortable and the ride is relatively smooth."

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Considering it is 14 yrs old, with well over 200,000 miles we are happy. Only issue is it needs struts and possibly transmission repair. But great car!"

R U., CO (2002 Subaru Forester)

"It needed a head gasket replacement fairly early on (80,000 miles?). I was amazed and disappointed. I understand this is typical."

STEVE C., MI (2002 Subaru Forester)

"safety and AWD in winter and snow handling so well"

VICTOR H., NY (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Though i paid a bit more than i wanted when i bought this used in 2005 (3 yr old vehicle) 'cause it had all the bells and whistles that i did not care about, i have been extremely well pleased with its consistent performance and durability. How long a vehicle lasts is much more important than looks or smoothness of ride."

Anonymous, MI (2002 Subaru Forester)

"We got good value because we paid only $300 above the dealer's cost, & we able to buy "extras" at cost. Though we live in Van Nuys, CA, I found the best price, Subaru dealer & salesman in Ventura, CA via the internet."

MARIANNE K., CA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Low maintenance required. The car continues to perform well after 15 years."

Anonymous, AZ (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Can't beat it for all of the features it has"

EVELYN E., WA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Purchased as a 3 year old vehicle with 60k kms for $22,000cad Limited edition. Other than the head gasket leak and usual repairs- exhaust/tires/brakes etc, this vehicle has been very reliable for 11 years and about 100,000 km. I like the older boxey styling because of excellent visibility. This has represented excellent 'life of vehicle' value, and I plan to keep for another few years. Newer models with CVT get better gas mileage."

PETER F., BC (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Very inexpensive maintenance ...fuel economy ...handling"

Anonymous, MI (2002 Subaru Forester)

"great car. No problems. Handles well in snow."

Anonymous, ID (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Our 16-year old Forester has 225,000 miles and still runs much like it did when new. There is no rust and the body looks almost like new. We have had no major repairs; it still has the original exhaust system and we only ever needed to buy one battery. I guess this car is the opposite of a lemon!"

Anonymous, PA (2002 Subaru Forester)

"The car is reliable, maintenance and repair costs have been minimal, it goes in snow, I have had no problems with it. I love my Subaru and it has been worth every penny I paid for it."

Jill M., DC (2002 Subaru Forester)

"The fact that I still drive this car speaks to its value! Additionally, the hauling capacity is remarkable. This week, I have made multiple trips between my previous house and my new one, with the Subaru loaded with landscape rocks from dismantled retaining walls. Few cars could have handled such heavy loads. Also, few cars could have transported the many trees and shrubs that I brought last week to my new property. The strong suspension, plus hauling space, both provide me with extra value."

Margaret K., NV (2002 Subaru Forester)

"Great longevity, reasonable maintenance costs."
