The Forester is among the best of the small SUVs. Its cabin is quiet with very good fit and finish and a roomy backseat. Safety equipment includes standard curtain airbags and stability control. Crash-test results are excellent. Forester also has the most comfortable ride of any small SUV, yet it is agile and handles securely.

Rosamond D., WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"amazing power at all speeds"

Anonymous, AB (2009 Subaru Forester)

"It always responds immediately to acceleration and braking demands as I need them. I am NOT a jack rabbit driver and do not "take off" after traffic lights change. I have all the power I need when I NEED to pass in the left lane. P.S., I ALWAYS use turn signals for my safety and others on the road! Visibility is also excellent in my vehicle."

"great in snow"

Barbara P., PA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Acceleration is adequate handling is superb and its fun to drive! Handling has prevented at least two possible serious accidents."

E B., FL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"no acceleration above 55 MPH"

Karl B., MI (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Again, the acceleration is very good with the manual transmission, and the turning radius is smaller than the Honda."

Edwin B., OR (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Not fast, just reasonable, practical."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Handles fine. Car accelerates like a winded elephant (ie terribly)."

Dan N., CO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"It handles well and is responsive to controls."

Anonymous, IA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Since it's not the turbo option, acceleration is not great. However, for a 4 cylinder engine on an all wheel drive SUV, it does pretty well. Handling is good with the electronic stabilization control. Road noise is a little too high for my liking. On cold mornings, shifting from reverse to drive has a delay and if you don't wait for the transmission to engage before pressing the accelerator, the car jerks as the gears engage."

Anonymous, AZ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Responds well to acceleration, excellent handling in all road conditions"

Caroline W., NJ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The Subaru is an excellent vehicle. It handles the winters of Cleveland very well. I drove it through the Smokey mountains and a cross country trip to Idaho including all over Yellowstone park. It's easy to handle in any weather conditions or traffic."

Gretchen E., OH (2009 Subaru Forester)

"I pull a small travel trailer with my Subaru Forester. It will not set any speed records with the trailer, but it is rock stable on the highway with the trailer, even in heavy wind. After 115000 miles and no repairs, the trailer duty does not seem to have affected the car."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Excelleration with the turbo, Smooth running car I have ever owned. Good gas milage for AWD SUV(24mpg). Quiet at first however much road noise as current Toyo tires became more worn. Computer electronics malfunction at least monthly, have to disconnect batterky to reset. Replaced alternator last week and battery(alternator shorted out.)"

James S., MO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Handling is very responsive, four wheel drive makes for excellent traction in bad weather. Acceleration is good, it's no sports car but pickup is more than adequate."

STEPHEN P., IL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"slow acceleration"

Anonymous, AB (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Transmission has a tendency to be jerky after a stop or at low speeds - the jerks are spontaneous, not related to driver input."

Anonymous, BC (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Acceleration uphill requires passing gear more often than I would like, but the acceleration is certainly sufficient when it is utilized."

CRAIG R., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Brake pedal pulsation"

Anonymous, VA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Best all wheel drive!!"

Anonymous, OH (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Very good acceleration, excellent handling for an SUV - especially the cornering. A fun rig to drive, something which was lost with the newer models."

JIM C., NH (2009 Subaru Forester)

"power enough to pass and inter interstate"

Anonymous, SC (2009 Subaru Forester)

"2.5L 4 speed a/t leaves a lot to be desired as far as performance with more than 2 people and some camp gear in the car. Then I bought an 1800 LBS boat/trailer rig and we move down the road a/ok at 100km/60mph but YOU MUST PLAN your highway merge and be patient going up hills like in VT, NH and Quebec. Had an transmission oil leak just before the radiator which looked like corrosion problem that was supposed to be on brake lines but never happened on my car."

Anonymous, QC (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Acceleration can be a little slow when you're getting up to highway speed, but it is fine overall. Handling sometimes feels a little unstable (especially in the winter, on slippery roads) because the car is kind of boxy, but the all-wheel drive is great and really helps overall."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Transmission/engine sometimes balks when I expect fast acceleration merging into traffic."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"very sluggish... no zip or acceleration"

LAURA F., WI (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Excellent snow car."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"We always feel safe and in control when we drive the Forester, no matter the weather conditions: sun, rain, snow, ice."

DENISE B., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Drives great, not real quick but ok"

JOHN L., ON (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Manual transmission good. Shift is so so No turbo is bad! However, the torque is sufficient for maximum payload when offroading I'd like more torque with their 2.5 turbo. And a non existent low gear transmission like 2 generations ago. The handling is very good for a SUV. I say it's much more secure than my 96 Maxima at the limits."

MICHAEL K., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The AWD and braking make this vehicle great for maneuvering and accident avoidance. This helps lessen the concern about deer getting in the way, or changing lanes on freeways. (One complaint, though: This vehicle has blind spots for drivers, which can occasionally cause problems on multi-lane roads.)"

DON M., MS (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Turbo is very fast. Interior is good quality and holds up very well."

WILLIAM F., CO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Always gets me where I want to go in all weather conditions. Smooth ride on freeway and in town."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Handling is secure and comfy but the engine is struggling because of the archaic 4 speed transmission. The transmission itself is fine but has only 4 gears"

IOANNIS A., BC (2009 Subaru Forester)

"I find my forester does not have enough 'zip' or quick response to sudden acceleration and hills"

Anonymous, AB (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Because the Subaru is high, it is easier to drive thru rain and snow and over potholes. However, we still have to replace the tires. I think roads the days are hard on tires."

Anonymous, IL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"prefect size, study ride, more reliable than my 2 previous Toyotas ,great visabilityand handling."

FRANCIS S., HI (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Excellent acceleration; very good handling for a 4-cylinder car with AWD. Price point vs. HP/torque is tops in class."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The handling is great the view(360) is superb !"

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Has a problem with a delay before going into gear after backing up on cold mornings."

MARK P., AZ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Just feels lightweight and cheap!"

Anonymous, WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Good if not great acceleration. It handles very deftly, responsive and has a very small turning axis."

Anonymous, AB (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The car has excessive road noise at highway speeds if the road surface is less than perfect. I purchased the car used with Toyo Versada LXII tires on which could be a major part of the noise factor. I still have the same tires so I am not able to eliminate the tires as a major source of the road noise."

Anonymous, GA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The Forester handles better than any other car I've ever owned. Very tight turning radius and handling both on or off road."

BEN M., MA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Very poor engine and transmission combination. Low power engine with 4 speed transmission causes lots of 2 gear downshifting and very high rpms to generate enough power for hills. I live in Colorado mountains."

MYLES S., CO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"wish it had a bit more power and cornered better but it is a small suv"

JEREMIAH H., MA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The seating is low in the cabin giving the feel that you are in an armored bathtub. The seats are comfortable and the seat heaters work great! It has a smooth/performance ride (not too soft) and accelerates well!"

SCOTT A., MN (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Not a smooth acceleration from slow or stop, seems to hesitate while deciding what to do."

B J., MB (2009 Subaru Forester)

"accelerates fast handles well"

Anonymous, KY (2009 Subaru Forester)

"It's easy handling, good for short and long distance driving."

FRANK H., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The Forester handles very well. The acceleration however is barely adequate. Because the only option in this model is a turbo, which requires premiun gas, I will probably go for the Outback with the Six."

JEFFREY B., ON (2009 Subaru Forester)

"I feel that he car should have more gears. It switches between gears to much."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Somewhat underpowered. Good road feel, but noisy."

BROOKE K., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Have to down shift going up long grades"

Anonymous, HI (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Don't put the "I don't want to expand on this factor"right next to the comment box. Or at least don't wipe out my comments after I spent 20 minutes swiping from my pain in the ass autocorrecting tablet. Short version again Acceleration is adequate, even with a full load. 9ish seconds 0-60. Unless you're facing a tesla. Random guy pulled up next to me at stop sign. I can get ahead of most cars from stop under normal driving because manual/clutch and cut them off safely when needed(lots of downt..."

Michael K., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"all wheel drive works great in corners and uncertain road conditions, manual shifting increases gas mileage and adds to fun of driving. There is some road noise not not annoying. has decent zip for the engine and good power for hills. It is comfortable for long drives and controls are easy and convenient."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Handles well. When in cruse control, engine overacts on steep hills. High RPM that is not necessary. My concern is engine wear."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"very stable driving"

Bruce C., MD (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The acceleration is adequate for entering traffic and stopping distance is good. It handles well and I'm confident driving it. It performs exceptionally well in snow!"

Bruce B., FL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Acceleration is a bit weak."

Anonymous, ON (2009 Subaru Forester)

"bigger engine"

Anonymous, WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The acceleration is adequate under most conditions but there is not enough power when merging into busy roadways where the traffic is moving fast."

Bruce N., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"This vehicle is a turbo charged Subaru and the acceleration and performance even using cruise control and going up steep hills is great. Drives like a V-8."

Anonymous, NM (2009 Subaru Forester)

"It's solid feeling, with o.k. accelerating and handling--bulky but that's b/c it's so solid."

Anya R., TX (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The acceleration, cornering and braking remind me of the sports cars that I used to drive. The turbo provides good acceleration and passing capability although the fuel economy is not as good as the standard version. The additional performance is worth the extra fuel expense to me."

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Seats are very comfortable but the drivers seat bottom broke last year cost $270 to repair. Lots of road noise from the tires. Ride is excellent!"

E B., FL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"road noise loud when driving"

Anonymous, CT (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The ride is a little bumpy and the engine noise could be quieter."

Anonymous, LA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Driver seat comfort is good, but passenger seat is lower than driver seat and cannot be adjusted to same height. Passengers comment negatively about this. Sound levels are not excessive but could be quieter. Ride is comfortable on the freeway but bumpy on patched or rough roads. For my next car, I will look for less noise and softer ride."

Anonymous, MN (2009 Subaru Forester)

"noisy ride"

Charles P., PR (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Have had a problem with support system for drivers seat. Two times in past 14 months I have had to have the seat support system replaced!"

Anonymous, NY (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Seats give me leg cramps after four hours driving. Road noise doesn’t allow for easy conversation with passengers."

Anonymous, AK (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Seats somewhat uncomfortable after many hours of driving (over 8 hours)."

Anonymous, CO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"back gets sore after half hour."

Karl B., MI (2009 Subaru Forester)

"It’s a bit noisy"

Anonymous, FL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Stiff uncomfortable seats and ride. Too bumpy and noisy. Mechanical adjustment of seats is too limited."

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Seats are stiff but reasonably comfortable. Road noise can be loud"

Caroline W., NJ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"I love my Forester however, I was greatly disappointed sitting in the passenger seat. When I purchased it, I am the main driver so I obviously was driving the vehicle and purchased it. Little did I know that the passenger seat was like sitting in a car not a SUV. I sat and any passengers sat way below the driver. I would never purchase another Subaru without an adjustable passenger seat."

Anonymous, MI (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Easy entry/exit."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Road noise is louder than average."

John W., CT (2009 Subaru Forester)

"very loud cabin noise level"

Anonymous, NY (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The leather seats offer good support and there is plenty of leg room in front and back. The ride is a bit firm, giving more road feel than is desired at times. The interior cabin is noisy which requires me to turn up the radio higher than I like. On the freeway, the standard 4 cylinder engine transmission often up-shifts on hills making it even louder."

Jonathan B., NM (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The seats disappoint me most. I have the electric adjuster for the driver’s seat and it does not have enough flexibility"

Harry G., GA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"I think this is a very comfortable and well-designed car, but I think the seats have gotten less comfortable and supportive (and sort of worn out and harder) with time. They still look and feel pretty good, but I have noticed this more lately. Also, I do not think the cabin is particularly quiet - you hear a lot of road and engine noise just driving around town, and it is worse on the highway. If I were to buy a new car, I would want one that is quieter."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Heated front seats"

Nicola M., OR (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The Forester is moderately comfortable and reasonably quiet. Not great on either but not bad."

J O., UT (2009 Subaru Forester)

Patrick A., AK (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Really comfortable family car"

Anonymous, TX (2009 Subaru Forester)

"It's a very comfortable car in all respects except noise. Road noise is tolerable but greater than desirable. Seats and ride are excellent."

Joseph C., FL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The passenger seat in this vehicle is perfect for me, but low for my 5'4" wife. She has to use a pillow sometimes. It would be better if the seat height were adjustable."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"seats have many adjustments and you can do them automatically (not manual) on the driver's side heated seats are wonderful could be quieter on the road"

Marilyn P., WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Seats comfortable for long drives road noise, and wind noise from roof rack are both anyoing All wheel drive works in Syracuse area Winter"

W C., NY (2009 Subaru Forester)

"lumbar support needed to help back problem"

Anonymous, WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Ride is fine, seats are comfortable, has a bit of road noise"

Anonymous, CO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"My 2009 Forester has the "Subaru rattle" caused by loose heat shield components. The only permanent solution is to remove the heat shields which is not an option for me because I frequently take the Forester off-road & don't want to accidentally start a fire. I have finally figured out the correct setting on my driver's seat that doesn't cause me pain, but the setting could easily be changed by another driver because the seat is not electric. I will consider getting electric seat adjustments on my next Forester."

Kim F., MD (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Road noise in cabin is higher than I prefer. Drivers seat has enough adjustments but the other seats are lacking height adustments. I could have bought that and didn't. I would be sure to get that next time."

Anonymous, MI (2009 Subaru Forester)

"I'm a big guy. Compared to the CRV, Rav 4 or other vehicles, these seats are comfortable, but more importantly, fit me."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Subaru Forester)

"too much noise while driving"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Low road/automobile noise. Comfortable ride. Seats comfortable"

James S., MO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Noisy ride"

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Subaru Forester)

Stephen D., RI (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The car is noisy"

Anonymous, MN (2009 Subaru Forester)

"As with every SUV I have ever owned the road noise is quite a bit more than the sedan I also owned."

Darwin B., FL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Very comfortable supportive seats, easy to operate climate control, plenty of room, great visibility, road noise is noticeable"

JOSEPH C., FL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Climate control much better in this car than in the new 2014, however seats are a bit more cramped, less roomy."

NICK S., CO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The seats are surprisingly comfortable, even on long hauls, and they are heated! The climate control system is very efficient in both seasons but when the fan is on the max setting it is outrageously loud. Road noise is a bit of a factor but I got used to it and the ride is very smooth."

LIZ H., AB (2009 Subaru Forester)

"noisy, interior rattles rough ride on rough broken pavement"

B J., MB (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Noisy on the road . Can't hear in back and difficult in fronti Over distance seats are especially drivers seat is very uncomfortable within 3 hours"

DON M., MS (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Interior very noisy while driving"

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The interior fit and finish and materials is not good enough for our next vehicle. The Forester model we purchased did not feel as luxurious as we want for our next car. I have a friend with a better interior. Still not good enough."

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Exhaust heat shields rattle excessively during acceleration."

MARK H., OH (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The car is comfortable, but this is the second Subaru on which I've had major issues with the air conditioning - even worse on this car than on my previous one, which was a 2003 sedan. Also, it is quieter than my last Subaru, but still not particularly quiet overall - cabin noise could be a lot better (and, having driven a newer model, I think it has been improved on those cars). The ride is good."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Easy handling, quiet, comfortable, good for short distance drive."

FRANK H., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Rides very smooth and has great traction on the snow. The seats are very comfortable."

J M., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Seats seem to sit low."

GRACE A., IL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Driver's seat needs a lumbar support."

R W., ON (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Despite having had the dealership repair the driver seat raising and lowering mechanism, the seat will still not stay in the elevated position. This has been an issue for at least 3 years. I am about to change the dealership that I use for repairs and service, as I don't think I'm getting the best service from my current/original choice, which has affected my impression of this vehicle."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Subaru Forester)

Anonymous, VA (2009 Subaru Forester)

Wish I had known that these were the same seats as in the Toyota RAV and Honda CRV with the attendant complaint of lack of thigh support (thigh support was great in our 2001 Forester - 2001 visibility was better too) Subaru has gotten too much like other cars in its class to its disadvantage."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The car has had squeaks and rattles from day one."

ROGER Z., IL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Way too much road/wind noise. In other words, a very noisy cabin. In addition, the cup holders are square and not round, so typical beverage containers loll around and can spill more easily."

LANCE B., NY (2009 Subaru Forester)

"climate controls are wonderful."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Subaru Forester)

"I find the climate control very hard to adjust. The "auto" setting is mostly worthless."

LARRY R., FL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Would like to have lumbar support in the driver's seat of this model."

CYNTHIA B., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Seats are very uncomfortable for distance riding The console is too far left making a difficult position for the drivers leg causing pain in knees with distance driving."

Anonymous, ME (2009 Subaru Forester)

"the seats are relatively comfortable but I was very disappointed that they said they were leather seats but they don't feel like leather to me and I have already had the seat covers replaced twice due to them wearing out."

Anonymous, MD (2009 Subaru Forester)

Anonymous, WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Driver's seat does not have good lumbar support"

MELISSA C., MA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The driver's seat isn't as comfortable as I'd like. The area around the foot pedals feels cramped & I don't have large feet at all. I have worn through the covering on the hump to the right of the accelerator pedal, primarily because the pedal is so close to the hump."

KIM F., MD (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Would be perfect if the interior ride were quieter. Could the type of tires make a difference in having less road noise?"

S N., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Road noise is very loud. Headrests had to be re-adjusted upon purchase so I could ride in the car or drive with my eyes looking at the road ahead and not the floor of the car! Easy to get in and out of."

RESA S., TX (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Lots of engine and road noise in cabin. Persistent fast clunk in drive train despite two dealer "repairs"."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The 2009 Forester is noisy, the road noise is loud. Also, the lack of A/C vents for the backseat is very frustrating. It is hard to cool off passengers in the back seat. But, the car is comfortable to sit in."

CHARLES H., AE (2009 Subaru Forester)

"I recently took my first long distance trip (900 miles each way) in my car. Sharing the driving responsibilities gave me an opportunity to sit in the driver seat, front passenger seat, and back seat for hours at a time. All three were as comfortable as can be expected. Plenty of room - no matter where I was sitting. The other two people thought so, too."

J B., WI (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The noise level and the riding comfort is not as good as it should be, but it has been an excellent car."

Anonymous, NC (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Road noise is very bad. When driving I have to turn up the radio in order to hear it well and when I come to a stop I have to turn it down because it's too loud. The air conditioner blows cooler air on the passenger side than on the driver side. The new Continental tires I have rumble making the ride a little rough."

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Subaru Forester)

Stephen B., VA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Seats need a better design. Not much back support"

Anonymous, NY (2009 Subaru Forester)

"You sit up high and it's easy to get into and out of the seats. It's very comfortable and visibility is very good. While not as zippy as a sedan it handles well and I'm very confident."

"Seats are terrific, offer lots of lumbar support."

Anita B., MA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Great seat comfort, low road noise"

Thomas R., WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Roomy seats, somewhat uncomfortable on long drives, noisy cabin"

Anonymous, IN (2009 Subaru Forester)

"while the ride is sufficient, it's very noisy on the highway, be it in town or across country. I do not attribute the noise level to the tires but rather to the lack of sound deadening of the vehicle."

"we don't like the passenger seat as it is mounted very low in the car. also a much noisier ride than i expected."

Anonymous, WI (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The performance version was available only with leather seats which we do not like. Leather seats are hot in the summer and cold in the winter. I wish cloth seats were available on the upscale, performance models. The ride is really good for an SUV."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Dealer provided tires were noisy. Ride Improved when tires were replaced."

Mike M., VA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"I am 6'1. The drivers seat is tight - my knees come up tight to the front. The lumbar support is nonexistent. I had to purchase an additional seat back support which helped a lot. There is a fair amount of road noise."

Anonymous, MN (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Road noise is noticeable. Subaru needs to spend some more time and money reducing road noise."

J H., MN (2009 Subaru Forester)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I got a great value from my purchase. The vehicle cost $17,000 for a manual transmission."

Anonymous, VA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Nine years old, 115000 miles and ZERO repairs! I even pull a small travel trailer with it. I have never had a car anywhere near as reliable as my 2009 Subaru Forester."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Has lasted for many years, reliable, can see out of it extremely well, has been great kid car."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"It always runs and rarely needs service."

Anonymous, NC (2009 Subaru Forester)

"My Subaru is best car I've ever bought and it was priced at an amount I felt comfortable with. It's held its value, it's reliable and dependable. My local Subaru dealer (Continental Motors) is super. My next car will be a Subaru."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Loves snow. A joy to drive in snow. Very low maintenance cost Subaru dealer was over maintaining and was costing me too much money. A rough ride and lots of body noise on rough roads."

B J., MB (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Bought it using an Internet price and were happy. It is aging well and we are happy with it."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"It’s a reliable car with good sight lines for a driver, handles capably well in all weather, and is roomy to help transport items. It is however very utilitarian in appearance, accelerates weakly on the highway, and the interior is too basic. It’s been a good value but I’m not in love with the car anymore and I have had to get some expensive things fixed on the car which has been disappointing."

Dan N., CO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"very reliable transportation, never lets me down. Never been stuck in winter either so it just does what it is supposed to do really well. No hassles or gimmicks."

"After 100k miles oil starts leaking on driveway. Both head gaskets are blown and cost $2500 to fix ($3000 at dealer). Mechanic explains poor design of gasket (5-ply) and too few bolts holding head to engine block. Replaces gasket with newer 3-ply gasket - hope it works!"

Bruce G., CO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Rarely has a mechanical problem, good mph, still looks good and runs well."

Mary P., CO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"No major problems for 10 years"

Betty P., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Great car, handles well, comfortable, easy to get in and out of, goes in the snow and wet weather, hauls lots inside, very safe. We have been hit twice by other drivers and were not hurt. The Subaru body shop fixed everything back as good as new."

Edith E., NC (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The Forester continues to perform well after 130,000 miles and is particularly good on back roads and does a reasonable job hauling stuff and towing trailers."

Tom R., AZ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"I've never had ANY problems with the Forester. It is an extremely dependable vehicle. I especially also like the style for hauling my dogs."

Rosamond D., WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"After comparing at least 5 similar cars I bought the Subaru because I liked it at least as much as all the competitors except the Acura but the price was better than all of them, especially compared to the Acura."

RICHARD R., PA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"It all depends on the dealer and how they handle customers. I feel I got snookered by my sales person, who was very good at selling cars. I should have paid much less for my car."

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"What other vehicle can you buy for 21000 before tax and fees that can be awd, off road capable, fuel efficient(comparable vehicles), and decent handling, and most importantly, manual transmission? Subaru outback of course. But I like the transmission feel better on the Forester. Mazda cx5 is good except for awd, off road, and price. It also didn't exist when I bought my car."

MICHAEL K., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"this vehicle holds it's value very well"

Anonymous, SC (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The Forester has had electrical problems in a number of areas, and has had a transmission replacement with less than 90,000 miles. i feel i should have expected a better reliability factor for the price paid."

Anonymous, OH (2009 Subaru Forester)

"As being the owner of my 4th Subaru I love the all wheel drive all the time. The all 4 wheels pull all the time. The tires all last much longer because all the tires share the driving force. The economy as usual depends on your driving but I usually get better than the average vehicle of comparison. I have well over 100,000 miles and well maintained and I have no issues or leaks."

CARL S., NJ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"I've had problems with the radiator caps losing or leaking coolant since the vehicle was new. Vehicle does not accelerate very well. Stock audio system was poor. Handling takes some getting used to."

MICHAEL M., AZ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The price was reasonable and the product has been worth at least the price."

DON K., AK (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The new purchase price was reasonable. After 90,000 miles it has required ZERO repairs. Fuel economy is good, it still looks good, and it has a top safety rating."

CRAIG V., WA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"I live in Alaska and the Forester is simply perfect for me. It is so reliable! My previous vehicle was a Tahoe and it was nightmare. The Subaru is dealership work is not cheap, but it is friendly, honest and helpful."

"Good styling, good gas economy, all wheel drive, easy manuverability, easy entry/exit, great cargo space in the back, good insurance rating. MAJOR BAD - Unfortunately due to latest airbag recall, no one can sit in the front passenger seat until it is fixed !"

RICHARD B., FL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Very satisfied overall but, somewhat disappointed with mileage in town. Mileage on highway around 27. Very good on and off paved roads and on wet and snow."

WILLIAM F., CO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The Forester has a decent ride, hauls lots of stuff, can pull a trailer well, and is fun to drive both on highways and unpaved roads."

TOM R., AZ (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The car runs and runs and runs. We maintain it and put in gas, and it is there."

ROBERT K., NH (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Subarus have head gasket problems because of their boxer engine design. It's a fact and I know it's going to cost me $2000 or so at 100,000 miles or so. So, I use that as a bargaining chip when I buy the car. I bought the car at a lower price, knowing that I was going to have to pay $2000 at some 5 - 7 years in the future. The value received for this car - if bargained properly - is very good."

JEANNE M., NE (2009 Subaru Forester)

"It has the room of an SUV, but has the styling of a sedan. Competitors were either too pricey, for the same look (Toyota), or drove like a truck (Mitsubishi). The Rogue's rear window had poor visibility. Hyundai was a close second. The reliability was a major factor."

Anonymous, ON (2009 Subaru Forester)

"All wheel drive in Canadian snow belt is very nice to have, especially when going hunting, snow shoeing and ice fishing in the back country. It never failed me and I did a few dumb moves and it got me out of trouble. Wife loves it too when the weather is bad and needs to do the shopping or 911/Grandma a kid is too sick for school at 06:30 and needs to drive into Montreal in a snow storm. Easy to park, space for runs to hardware for wood panels etc. Easy on gas and very reliable."

Anonymous, QC (2009 Subaru Forester)

STEPHEN P., IL (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Had an 05 Forester before that was totaled but an excellent vehicle. The 09 was my choice of replacement but as a used car. Did have oil gaskets replaced under warranty but a tranny noise wasn't covered. Will still buy the same brand again, though but probably as a new car only."

NANCY S., CT (2009 Subaru Forester)

"It has all wheel drive which makes it a good car for winter driving. As well, it handles well, turns on a dime, and excellent sightlines."

Anonymous, AB (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The vehicle cost me her old car as she purchased a new one - cost $00000 .My daughter gave it to me as my Hyundai Tucsan had 194000 and she thought a Realtor should have something less likely to fail. Great car, great daughter! (I did like the Tucsan ALOT)"

JUDITH H., WI (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Got 2009 USAA car buying service price of $150 over dealer cost of course the dealer made some extra profit on unneeded items such as towing package but they had preset prices. Unfortunately now USAA uses TruCar which since most people pay too much for a vehicle the 20th percentile price offered is only a fair price not a good deal which would be around the 10th percentile or lower."

MICHAEL P., UT (2009 Subaru Forester)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Neat features coupled by really, really cheap ones, like the vinyl sun visor which is useless when you move it over toward the window for side sun. It's way too short and no light in the visor mirror. Really cheaply made, yet I have puddle lights, a less used feature that is simply neat but the sun visor is grade D and something more necessary than a pimp my ride puddle light. Plastic in/around the dash, and really lack of cup holders in the front. The console cup holders are not strategically p"

NICK S., CO (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Above average visibility from inside the car. The windows are large and not much gets in the way. The moon-roof is one of my favorite things about my Subaru. It is huge and when fully open you almost feel like you are in a convertible. Exterior styling - very nice, '09 was a new model year and a big improvement. Styling inside - plain and functional."

LIZ H., AB (2009 Subaru Forester)

"It was a remodeled version that year and was so good looking that I bought a new car instead of used for the first time."

JEFFREY B., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Great visibility, easy to park and maneuver because front hood can be seen, windows are big, no pillars blocking view."

LISA L., QC (2009 Subaru Forester)

"Upswept lower edge of rearmost side window impedes visibility when checking for a lane change."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Subaru Forester)

"1. Good visibility; large windows. 2. The upright windshield (NOT sloped like other autos The sloped windshields have dangerous sloping pilers that obstruct view to the side at intersections)."

AZALON V., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The plastic trim on the on the wheel wells is constantly loose. I have to re-glue them at least quarterly. It looks good, until it comes loose. Bad planning on Subaru's part. But the scoop and the fin make the Forester look sharp."
