Includes acceleration and handling
What Owners Say
"It handles very well and the acceleration is good. The problem is a dated 4 speed transmission. The engine revs very high at highway speeds. It desperately needs a cvt or at least one or two more gears."
Anonymous, NC (2011 Subaru Forester)"Living in Minnesota, competent handling in snow/ice is key and the Forster handles this task very well. The car is also very comfortable on long trips and rides great on all manor of roads."
JAMES Z., MN (2011 Subaru Forester)"Exceptional snow and ice handling."
Anonymous, IA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Got this when we lived in Alaska. Simply no substitute for AWD in snow and ice. Living south now, haven't even put on snow tires for 3 years"
GORDON P., WA (2011 Subaru Forester)"The best handling on snow and ice of any car I've owned."
Anonymous, MT (2011 Subaru Forester)"Handles very well and Acceleration onto highway is very good"
Anonymous, CT (2011 Subaru Forester)"Great 4 wheel drive and super visibility, fun to drive"
ARTHUR K., VA (2011 Subaru Forester)"The turbo-charging provides power for acceleration, useful for changing lanes in dense Boston traffic and passing on two lane Nova Scotia roads."
DOUGLAS R., MA (2011 Subaru Forester)"The 4 wheel drive provides excellent performance in winter."
Anonymous, ON (2011 Subaru Forester)"Traction in snow with the stick shift is unbelievable. Decent handling in general"
Anonymous, AK (2011 Subaru Forester)"Has manual transmisson"
CAL R., AZ (2011 Subaru Forester)"It handles great in traffic and bad weather. It has great acceleration"
Anonymous, CA (2011 Subaru Forester)"It accelerates decently if the gas pedal is pushed slowly and steadily. If you hit the pedal hard due to a need to accelerate suddenly, the car's engine revs but it does not accelerate. It kicks in a few seconds later. This can be a problem. I was told by the dealership this is common for AWD."
Anonymous, NC (2011 Subaru Forester)"Acceleration is so-so. The engine struggles to switch gears while I'm merging onto highways. No overdrive feature either. This is my biggest annoyance with this car."
Anonymous, MO (2011 Subaru Forester)"My previous Forester suffered loss of steering control during a late winter snowfall when I down-shifted manually descending a moderate slope on a gravel thinly snow-covered road resulting in a collision with a utility pole (no injuries resulting) at about 20 mph."
M M., NH (2011 Subaru Forester)"Great handling, 4WD system is brilliant in the snow where we live, great ground clearance and very predictable. An excellent handling car in tough conditions."
ANTHONY E., BC (2011 Subaru Forester)"The car struggles a bit going up steep hills. We live at 5500 feet and frequently drive to Santa Fe which is at 7200 feet. There are one or two sections of the drive that go up a steep incline and the Subaru frequently has to automatically downshift. A bit more power would be helpful."
GARY P., NM (2011 Subaru Forester)"Sluggish acceleration unless you downshift and really rev it. All power seems to come in high rams. My friend's older Forester (07) with a similar motor seems to have a lot more power."
ANTHONY L., CA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Not the zippiest car on the road but very adequate for entering freeways and everyday safe driving."
WILLIAM W., SC (2011 Subaru Forester)"Despite Consumer Reports bias toward this vehicle, it leans too much in curves, and suffers from an annoying delay in acceleration. Surprisingly, it also gets lower gas mileage than my Corvette. However, it is a good workhorse vehicle."
TERRENCE V., OR (2011 Subaru Forester)"Handles much better than you would expect from a Vehicle of this type but acceleration is poor."
TOM R., MD (2011 Subaru Forester)"Love the acceleration from the turbo. So fun to drive"
PAUL K., IL (2011 Subaru Forester)"Driveability,"
MICHAEL M., MN (2011 Subaru Forester)"I drive a windy mountain road a great deal and it handles beautifully!!!"
NANCIE B., CA (2011 Subaru Forester)"I live in a hilly area and the acceleration is poor for that. It's OK otherwise, but sometimes I wonder whether I'll make it up my hills."
VICTORIA S., MO (2011 Subaru Forester)"Car handles well and is easy to park."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Subaru Forester)"The turbo makes this vehicle so powerful and fun to drive. Acceleration is outstanding and handling is wonderful."
Anonymous, AZ (2011 Subaru Forester)"Seems underpowered. Steering is cumbersome and top heavy when compared to other SUV's I've driven."
TIM S., WA (2011 Subaru Forester)"We live in the country on a gravel road and get plenty of snow in the winter. This car gets us through no matter what weather we face. Traction in bad weather is remarkable."
IAN P., ON (2011 Subaru Forester)"Very responsive. Has a somewhat "squirrel-y" feel. Accelerates quickly but the engine is noisy when you put your pedal to the metal - for instance, when merging onto the highway."
Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Forester)"Very reliable and can handle any kind of weather or road conditions"
Anonymous, OK (2011 Subaru Forester)"Subaru traction control is excellent for dirt-road hill climbing. Only one wheel needs to have traction for the vehicle to be able to move."
ROBERT B., CA (2011 Subaru Forester)"i have driven across the US two times from New Jersey to Boise Idaho and two time to San Jose California. The car drove extremely in all conditions and terrain."
JOE B., NJ (2011 Subaru Forester)"It's just a good solid, safe feeling car - braking and acceleration is excellent,."
Anonymous, VA (2011 Subaru Forester)"All wheel drive is great! Downside is that the automatic transmission can't be downshifted (from say 3 to 1 for bad road conditions or steep grades) but handling is great."
MARY F., MD (2011 Subaru Forester)"Slow acceleration. Noisy engine but great in snowy conditions."
Anonymous, OR (2011 Subaru Forester)"Responsive steering for a vehicle its size. Minimal floatiness for its size. Still a larger vehicle."
Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Forester)"Winter driving and handling stability."
Anonymous, MT (2011 Subaru Forester)"Handles better than any other car I have owned in the snow/ice."
Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Forester)"Easy and competent handling. Good acceleration. Great around town and excellent in snow and ice."
TIMOTHY H., NE (2011 Subaru Forester)"I sense that the four cylinder engine is capable of much better acceleration but, apparently, the computer restricts it. The throttle-by-wire lag and slowness in downshifting is frightening at times in heavy expressway traffic, such as when merging or needing to quickly accelerate for other reasons. I compensate by putting it into manual shift mode when I enter intense traffic situations. However, even then the slowness of the throttle response can be frightening."
BETSY M., VA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Drives like it's on rails"
Anonymous, ON (2011 Subaru Forester)"winter driving"
Anonymous, NB (2011 Subaru Forester)"Handles well in bad weather and on clay/dirt roads. Comfortable, but would like less road noise. Reliable."
Anonymous, GA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Acceleration can be slow sometimes as the car takes some time to shift"
Anonymous, TN (2011 Subaru Forester)"Its a little nervous on the expressway at high speed or when a big truck goes by."
Anonymous, TX (2011 Subaru Forester)"This is the first all wheel drive vehicle I have had and it was an adjustment that it it is not as freewheeling as a two wheel drive. It slows quicker when at speed and foot off gas than I am used too. Maneuverability in snow is great."
JEFFERY H., MO (2011 Subaru Forester)"Acceleration is adequate but could be better; engine tends to lug unless shifted manually in the sport mode, and gas mileage suffers accordingly."
Anonymous, CO (2011 Subaru Forester)"Engine works hard on inclined roads and passing. Sometimes very hard."
Steven P., OR (2011 Subaru Forester)"Needs more power in the base engine"
Anonymous, GA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Long distance driving difficult on wrists. Harder turning wheel"
Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Forester)"Road handling , reliability,"
John M., NS (2011 Subaru Forester)"Drives as smooth as expected for small SUV. Not too much road noise at highway speeds. Feels like a small SUV around corner, with some sense of ridgity and tightness. Not floaty like the 2011 outback. Did well in 2" snow and ice on stock tires."
Anonymous, WA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Handles very nicely. Grips the road nicely."
David H., WA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Acceleration and handling are great."
Anonymous, WI (2011 Subaru Forester)"My wife feels very confident driving it; she has to go out in poor weather often and she never feels at risk, provided she drives carefully"
Anonymous, NS (2011 Subaru Forester)"Very easy to drive. Acceleration is fine. Love the visibility front and rear"
Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Forester)"Handles great with the Boxer engine. It replaced my Volvo XC and handled much better and was 3)% cheaper."
Steven D., CT (2011 Subaru Forester)"Love the AWD and it handles well."
Anonymous, MO (2011 Subaru Forester)"On one occasion switching the cruise control back on to a pre-set highway speed resulted in near-red-line RPM's which triggered the check-engine function, disabling the cruise control until the dealership could check the car. No faults were found and no charges resulted."
Michael M., NH (2011 Subaru Forester)"Unless one is into very serious "4-wheeling or rock hopping" the all wheel drive will handle about any kind of road condition. (40 miles of gooey, 3-4 inch deep mud north of the Arctic Circle)."
Mark N., UT (2011 Subaru Forester)"I always feel as though I am in control of how the vehicle performs. Turn radius, braking, acceleration, and deceleration are all responsive to my input, increasing the level of control I feel over the vehicle."
Anonymous, MS (2011 Subaru Forester)"Sluggish acceleration, lumbering handling. Love the visibility and all wheel drive. Good safe car for wife's everyday driving."
Tim S., WA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Dependability, roominess, very low long-term maintenancy costs"
Andrew S., PA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Acceleration is fair and engine getting very loud."
Bill O., NY (2011 Subaru Forester)"Tight handling and excellent pickup and highway cruising."
Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Forester)"It is all wonderful!"
Anonymous, MD (2011 Subaru Forester)"good acceleration, tight turning radius to facilitate parking"
Anonymous, CA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Handles very well on all road surfaces. Good handling for a SUV. Acceleration is acceptable for my type of driving."
Anonymous, NS (2011 Subaru Forester)"The acceleration is VERY lacking. Once up to speed it's OK."
Kathleen M., NM (2011 Subaru Forester)"Very nice to handle on a variety of surfaces. Acceleration is a bit slow, but that's expected. I like the sport mode for occasional use."
Anonymous, TX (2011 Subaru Forester)"Cabin noise from road could be better. This car is perfect for running around town in any weather."
Anonymous, NM (2011 Subaru Forester)"For a four cylinder engine, the Forester accelerates quickly and the all wheel drive provides confident handling."
John T., CA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Adequate power good handling"
J K., WI (2011 Subaru Forester)"Winter driving is less stressful ??"
Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Forester)"I have almost always driven sports cars and when I purchased the Subaru I was amazed at how closely the steering resembled that of my sportscars. Acceleration is very good for a 4 cylinder engine. Ride is comfortable."
Joe M., IL (2011 Subaru Forester)"I'm an art vendor on weekends and even with the car packed to the gills!! it corners and turns beautifully"
Patty H., RI (2011 Subaru Forester)"It does not respond quickly when depressing the acceleration pedal, but does when turning the steering wheel."
Sara W., TX (2011 Subaru Forester)"I find I am always the "first out the gate" when a light turns green. The acceleration is very good, although there is some straining on the engine if I try to accelerate too quickly. The car itself seems nimble and responsive."
Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Forester)"Smooth acceleration, love the boxer engine"
Scott Z., WI (2011 Subaru Forester)"It handles well, it has superior acceleration, particularly when compared to the new Forester or Outback models. Only the new Cross-tracks (not sure that is the right name) from Subaru has similar acceleration. Bad = rear brakes, very poor durability, had to replace pads & rotors 3 times so far, and I do not ride the brakes, I tend to coast to stops."
Robert G., IL (2011 Subaru Forester)"Drives very well. Not a race car, a little slow on the uphill acceleration, but no real complaints."
Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Forester)"Responsive, handles well. Acceleration is only OK."
Mark T., MD (2011 Subaru Forester)"4 cyl engine struggles when going up steep inclines -- this is the mountains so that is an issue -- wish the Forester would have had an option for a 6 cyl"
Anonymous, NM (2011 Subaru Forester)"It corners and handles very well. Acceleration is good for a four cylinder."
Robert P., TN (2011 Subaru Forester)"acceleration and handling are great"
Ken S., AB (2011 Subaru Forester)"The All-Wheel drive is awesome on icy, wet roads. This is my 5th Subaru and I won't drive anything else. The other top feature of them is they don't break-down. I have never had a major repair on any of my Subaru's!!!!!!!!"
Anonymous, MD (2011 Subaru Forester)"Good handling and acceleration"
Anonymous, TX (2011 Subaru Forester)"good acceleration and very good handling"
Anonymous, CA (2011 Subaru Forester)"It accelerates at an acceptable speed. Fast enough to safely pull into and pass traffic and slow enough for me to control. The only thing I do not like is that it is getting too large on the outside."
Anonymous, OH (2011 Subaru Forester)"Handles any road condition well."
Ian P., ON (2011 Subaru Forester)"It responds easily and handles mountain roads extremely well."
Nancie B., CA (2011 Subaru Forester)"See earlier comments."
Jeffrey K., MD (2011 Subaru Forester)"Very good acceleration and parking"
Anonymous, OR (2011 Subaru Forester)"Acceleration and handling is very good and the car's turning radius is outstanding"
Anonymous, NJ (2011 Subaru Forester)"I have snowy or sometimes muddy roads to drive and the all wheel drive gets me through almost anything. The acceleration is excellent."
Evelyn B., ND (2011 Subaru Forester)"This car (with automatic transmission and non-turbo engine) can be terrifying when called up to accelerate quickly, as when merging into a high-speed highway. It hesitates to accelerate, then, in a panic, it double-downshifts and revs like crazy. I have learned to manually downshift ahead of time when I see the need coming up."
Betsy M., VA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Handling in snow is wonderful. Acceleration is just so so, and seems to be a little worse as the vehicle ages. Nonetheless, we plan to buy another Forester when this one wears out."
Anonymous, UT (2011 Subaru Forester)"This small SUV still has a lot of power, and handles very nimbly. I am very happy with its handling on highways. Road noise leaves something to be desired, as it tends to be loud with lots of squeaks."
Marcus C., ON (2011 Subaru Forester)"Sound-proofing the cabin should be improved. Too much wind and road noise. Audio system quality is mediocre."
Anonymous, MO (2011 Subaru Forester)"Car has plenty of power and handles great"
Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Forester)"Great turning radius, handles well even in snowy and wet conditions. Good acceleration, great breaking."
Karen A., MI (2011 Subaru Forester)"Very satisfied with the handling of the Forester, especially turning. Satisfied with the acceleration, although it is not as fast as the Crosstrek. As a commuter exposed to a lot of congested roads and erratic driving, the Subaru safety factor is very important."
Anonymous, MI (2011 Subaru Forester)"Ease of driving, tight turn ratio and good traction wit 4 wheel drive"
Anonymous, NY (2011 Subaru Forester)"Sometimes wish it had more power."
Bruce D., NV (2011 Subaru Forester)"Standard engine somewhat under powered for highway driving."
Anonymous, SC (2011 Subaru Forester)"Outstanding acceleration and handling. Always."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Dependability and handling."
Anonymous, SC (2011 Subaru Forester)"Now that the top half of the engine has been replaced, does not lose a drop of oil. Subaru paid for this repair. Car runs flawlessly."
Anonymous, ME (2011 Subaru Forester)"Acceleration is adequate. Where the vehicle shines is driving in adverse conditions including snow and rain. Even on dry pavement I can feel the AWD providing input when entering and exiting on/off ramps at speed. Its great visibility and manoeuvrability make this a great vehicle and delight to use in tight spaces."
Brad S., ON (2011 Subaru Forester)"It handles very well. I especially like the tight turning radius which allows me to easily maneuver in tight places and park easily. Acceleration is very good, but not great; I can comfortably accelerate and merge on highways."
Anonymous, TX (2011 Subaru Forester)"Very good"
Anonymous, NB (2011 Subaru Forester)"Has adequate accel and nimble, predictable handling"
Anonymous, CA (2011 Subaru Forester)"Wonderful handling during winter driving."
Anonymous, MT (2011 Subaru Forester)
"Subaru changed the engine design on the Forester in 2011. As with first roll-outs, the engine has a few faults, which seem to have been corrected in the 2012 and beyond models. The engine will rev loudly when trying to accelerate and the handling is delicate. I prefer how the car pulls forward and is a little more "stiff" on the newer models."
