This iteration of the Subaru Legacy scores among the top tier of family sedans and offers standard all-wheel drive. It is significantly roomier and quieter than the previous model and has impressive ride comfort and responsive handling. Even with all-wheel-drive, the fuel economy is impressive, thanks to its continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"With the 6 speed manual transmission is quick off of stops; fun to drive!"

James V., WA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Poor on center steering, sloppy handling, CVT loud and slow to respond"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"acceleration is smooth especially with the cvt transmission...sure footedness of traction ...ride is soft and comfortable"

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Quick to respond, easy merging onto the freeways,"

Lori L., OR (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"great for the price point."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"It handles very well and has a great turn radius."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Responsive handling in all conditions. Like driving standard transmission. Always feels very centered on the road."

Anonymous, CO (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Big engine, smooth transmission, great acceleration"

Larry L., VA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Acceleration is strong, handling is solid. Would reccomend."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Car handles very well in typical driving and handles quite well when cornering with some acceleration in a corner but don't do this in every corner. Better yet, don't use this at all. It's not necessary. Acceleration when passing is quite good for a 2.5L engine"

Ken Y., CA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"It has great acceleration and handling on the road. It accelerates quickly and holds the road on curves and in windy conditions"

Anonymous, MI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Acceleration is adequate for the 4 cylinder, but I'd expect more for freeway entrance ramps. Handling is excellent, in all types of weather."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"CVT is slow to accelerate"

Ted K., WI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Handling is very secure in all weather, acceleration is adequate"

Donald R., ON (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"gas pedal is too sensitive with 6 cyl"

Anonymous, ME (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"good handling; very good acceleration for the engine I have (4 cylinder)"

Anonymous, MD (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Best handling of any vehicle I have owned since 1977. I think I wore out a set of tires early due to maintaining higher speeds on curves - it was just fun."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"It handles the road very well, acceleration is great and the ride is smooth."

Jody M., NY (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Very responsive handling and excelleration."

Carl F., NY (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"While it's no sports car, the Legacy can move adequately when needed."

G K., IA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Drives the same at 155,000 miles as the 39,000 miles when I first bought it (used)."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"The all wheel drive is acceptionable good in heavy rain & ice & snow. All wheel drive increases handling in all areas of the driving experience. Acceleration & torq are slightly above average."

Anonymous, IL (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"It's fun to drive & handles very well, especially in the rain & light snow."

Ronald W., OH (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Smooth and easy to drive in snow"

Carolyn T., CA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"All wheel drive..."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Quick acceleration. I do have the 3.6 L. The car corners like it’s hugging the road. I feel solid to drive. It doesn’t jump around in the lanes when the road is rough."

Anonymous, OR (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"CVT engine is whiney"

Anonymous, CT (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"The CVT isn't turbo-charged, so merging from a slow onramp into fast traffic can be tricky, but overall the vehicle performs well."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Even though acceleration of my Subaru is rated lower than other car makes in the same class, I am very satisfied with it.I hit the accelerator and the power is always there. The paddle shifters also work great."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Amazing response and smooth ride"

Anonymous, WA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"It's competent, no race car by any means in both acceleration and handling. Fine family sedan."

GLEN K., IA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Sleeper car...this car is FAST"

Anonymous, MA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"The CVT transmission is probably responsible for a steady 30mpg, around town and 34mpg on the highway. Like any car, you must learn and understand how to make this car handle well. I think there is a good compromise between handling and smooth ride."

KEN Y., CA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"I like that it is a manual transmission (2012 was the last year). The fact that the Legacy is no longer available with a manual transmission in all but the lowest trim line means that I probably won't buy it again, though."

ROSS T., AB (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Handling in all climates is excellent. However, acceleration is sometimes inadequate, particularly upon entering freeway."

DENNIS M., MI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"excellent acceleration and easy to drive and control"

Anonymous, CO (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Highly impressed"

Anonymous, CO (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"The car does not handle well in the freeway driving. You're constantly having to correct steering do to the continual drifting and floating effect. It feels like you're on the water being blown left and right by the wind. We also own a Subaru Forester which handles great. It's not the size of the car, it's the steering itself. It is simply not responsive enough."

Anonymous, WA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"For a four cylinder motor this car has pep and good fuel economy. Last year driving to work with some highway mileage, I averaged 33-33 MPH. City mph is only 28-29."

JUDITH B., MI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Excelleration is bettter than one expects out of a 4-cyl. car. I've been asked if I purchased the more expensive 6-cyl. The handling is good and it is fun to drive on the winding back roads on which I live. I do have some trouble determining where the front end is in relation to high curbs and hit them. The car seems to enjoy traveling at 60-80 mph on freeways, so I do have to watch the spedometer so I don't speed."

KATHY S., VA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Acceleration with 4cyl is just OK. The steering wheel feels 'heavy' and touchy at the same time."

CHRISTOPHER L., MN (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"acceleration from a stop is slower than I would like it to be, although it is a 4 cylinder."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"none"

KEN G., OR (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Under powered."

CARL F., NY (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Drives great in the snow and ice"

VICKI K., WI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Good in snow and the anti-slip (or whatever they call it) works well."

GREGORY H., WI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"It's four-wheel drive and handles very well."

DEANNA M., PA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"HANDLING AND ACCELERATION ARE SUPERB ON RAIN AND SLIPPERY SURFACES."

Anonymous, IL (2012 Subaru Legacy)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Seat comfort – C Noise - B+ Ride - B+"

James James S., LA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"the driver's seat is very comfortable, the electric seat adjustments are easy to make while driving which increases the comfort level when on longer trips. The heated seats are a blessing on cold winter mornings, for both driver and passenger. The passenger would like to have the flexibility of electric seat adjustment, too."

Anonymous, VA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"As a 230 lb male, the driver's seat was totally worn out in just a 80000km. Hard metal parts poking into your hips. Terrible. Had to modify the seat with padding to make it tolerable. By comparison, the seat in our old Rav 4 had 270000km on it and it was fine. Also, the Legacy interior rattles and squeaks all over."

Brandon M., AB (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"The ride is very comfortable. Lots of seat positions."

D C., NY (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Love my Subaru, the only thing I'd like to change is the noise. It is very loud,"

Anonymous, MA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Seats are reasonably comfortable, noise level and ride are both very good"

Donald R., ON (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Quietest in cabin of any vehicle I have owned since 1977. Ride also good."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"seats are comfortable"

Anonymous, ME (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Seats comfortable but seat covering is terrible. Stains when it gets wet. Looks awful. Leave a window or roof open and it rains you have an awful stain on fabric of seats."

Ron S., IN (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Typical of all Subarus, road noise is more pronounced than many other makes."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Solid cabin with quiet ."

Anonymous, MA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"The seats are supportive and of reasonably good quality. Car noise is on the high side, probably my biggest issue in this category. Ride quality is acceptable."

G K., IA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"The seats are comfortable with great lumbar support. Driving a distance is not tiring."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Seats are good, road noise is low, ride is good on this model. Would reccomend."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Driver's seat adjustment is great. The is a bit too much road noise."

Anonymous, WA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"The fabric seats with seat warmers are CLUTCH. Fabric doesn't burn bare skin (especially kids) during hot summer, and the availability of seat warmers with the fabric is still one of my top satisfaction features. Noise and ride are both top notch, especially with the CVT, which allows kids to drink without spilling or sleep without waking when shifting."

JUSTIN-KATRINA J., IA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Very basic. Climate control has poor circulation to floor. A little noisy. Ride also just basic."

CHRISTOPHER L., MN (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"It's fine considering what I paid, but if I had it to do over, I'd get a higher level model. The seats are okay, but not for very long trips. It's a little loud with road/wind noise."

JOSEPH L., OH (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Comfort is very good. A noise from rear suspension is very annoying and dealer claims there is nothing wrong."

Anonymous, TN (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"The passenger seat needs to be able to raise it. It is too low for my wife who has a hip replacement."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"ride is a bit stiff on bumpy roads"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"The seats have given me repeated problems, the leather has been replaced twice. Now the drivers lumbar support is giving out. The ride and noise are somewhat disappointing. The CVT transmission is crude compared to other cars I've ridden in with it."

Anonymous, WA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"While I love driving this car, it is probably the noisiest vehicle I have owned. There are numerous squeaks and other noises in the cabin and the seat. I have had the car at the dealer to fix this, but the noises just keep coming back."

Anonymous, IL (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"The heater and air conditioner both are slow to heat or cool. The AC is just barely cool enough for comfort in weather around 85 degrees and up."

Anonymous, CT (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Typical for Subaru, road and engine noise are more pronounced than they need to be."

DENNIS M., MI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"My Legacy has very comfortable seating. I just had my hip replaced and the ride home from the hospital didn't bother me at all. Now, I am looking forward to being allowed to drive again."

JUDITH B., MI (2012 Subaru Legacy)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"The Subaru can get at least the expected mpg, and sometimes even bettter if driven properly. I frequenly get 30 to 33 mpg and can get 34 on some trips. No one else who drive her can get that. The frequecy of repair is very low, although I seem to wear out tires sooner than expected. I have had several accidents and the Subaru has protected me and my passenger from any harm, although the repairs were expensive, but covered by insurance (except the deductable, of course.) Anonymous, ND (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"Good riding car with 4 wheel drive."

KENNETH B., NY (2012 Subaru Legacy)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"I love my Subaru. The styling is good."

DEANNA M., PA (2012 Subaru Legacy)

"The interior styling is very dated. I don't know anyone that would like fake wood grain trim in a car. This comes in the limited model. The dash is also cheap/plasticky looking and makes weird noises at times. Outside of car looks very nice, interior needs redesign."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Subaru Legacy)
