The Outback wagon has long been a popular all-wheel-drive alternative to a small SUV, especially for those living in more northern climes. It's a very practical package, with great visibility, a roomy back seat and a spacious cargo hold. Fuel economy is a class-leading 24 mpg overall. The four-cylinder version has long been impressive, but the Outback isn't exactly a pleasure to drive.

Richard B., CT (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Doesnt work all the time. Black screen. Lines thru screen"

Anonymous, WI (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"sometimes works, sometimes doesn't"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Outback)

"backup camera was intermittently not working. and eventually stopped working entirely. I'm bringing it to the dealer in a month"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen difficult to see

"Do to the position of the information screen in the lower middle of the dash it is vary hard to read and see while driving. It would much better if the screen was at eye level"

"Hard to see wearing sunglasses"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Subaru Outback 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"This happened enough that Subaru replaced the unit but it still happens. Enough that we hate the GPS and don't bother with it most of the time. (Unlike the 10 year older Mercedes GPS which just works great even if the user interface is rather clunky)"

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This is the same problem (or related) to the GPS problem. The system was replaced."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"Without warning it would go off"

Jan W., VA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The back-up camera nor radio work when the car starts up on a cold morning (temp less than about 50 F). If I drive for about 5 miles, allowing the engine to warm up, I can turn the engine off and restart. The back-up camera and radio will then work; however, the radio 'lost' the station that it was playing when last turned off."

Anonymous, NM (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Back up camera failed"

John H., ON (2014 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Anonymous, KS (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Can't use USB. Seems to be a problem is Subaru's since my kid's Subaru has same problem. Subaru says it is because my IPOD is old. My brand new phone doesn't work either."

Anonymous, CO (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The audio system will not properly play podcasts or playlists. When the iPhone is plugged into to USB, the Bluetooth connection no longer functions to play audio"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Streaming music from my iPhone via Bluetooth became choppy and with static. The dealer replaced the unit"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Navigation system makes periodic errors and gives totally wrong directions. Voice controls useless"

Ralph E., NY (2014 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"This has been nothing but frustration to use. So much so that my wife many times pulls out her phone to use the maps on it, which is dangerous and distracting"

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It is unreliable. I use my iPhone GPS more than the car GPS"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The system maps were old when I bought the car. Many roads are not included in the maps and the company now wants to charge quite a bit of money to update the SD card."

Anonymous, WV (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes it works well, but sometimes it gives totally incorrect or roundabout directions."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The GPS and display would freeze and hang - overall the GPS is horrible and my wife now almost always uses her phone instead. The dealer replaced the GPS/Display/Radio due to the problem (under warranty) and it seemed to have fixed some of the problems but it is still unreliable. Likely a software problem."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Does not accept voice commands as specified. Even the dealer can not make voice commands work. Ability to alter the rout to one you prefer is limited"

Anonymous, TN (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, PA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Other than manual input of street address it is very hard to set the GPS system to find anything. It is also hard to get it to remember settings for the future, and seemingly impossible to get rid of those one no longer wants"

R E., NY (2014 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"The GPS consistently gives bad directions, often sending me in the opposite direction from where I am headed and frequently instructing me to leave a limited access highway when nowhere near my destination. I use Apple and Google maps to get where"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The entire nav display died. It was replaced by dealer but was a hassle to deal with"

Anonymous, NV (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Charles D., TX (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"System will not recognize calling commands to call by name. System wants to "go back" or call last number called in. Amounts to having to pull over out of traffic to place a call by punching in number on phone, then talk through car speakers"

"we paired two phones. One stays paired and the other does not stay paired"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, PA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had two leaks, one from the sunroof, which the dealer said was due to the drain lines plugging with dust (I never use the sun roof). The dealer cleaned the drains at no charge. The other leak was from the high mount stop light housing on the rear lift gate. The dealer said that because the vehicle was out of warranty, I would have to pay to fix it, and quoted a couple thousand dollars based on headliner removal and replacement. That didn't make sense as the lift gate is external. A body shop, which said leaks like this are common on Subarus, said they could fix it for a lot less, but I'm waiting for it to rain again so that I can show them the problem."

Also, the service department could use lessons in clearer communication of proposed and costly work. I very nearly had to pay an additional $600. because the calipers could have been damaged due to me not knowing when to service the brakes. As it is, I paid over $1000. to have a Level 2 service done on my car. This seems very high. ALSO: the Subaru service department charged me for work I had already had done (oil change and tire rotation) and the service man became very demonstrably angry when I told him that I was being charged for work that had already just been completed a month earlier by other service shops. The manager approached me privately and I told him that I did not appreciate the other man's simmering rage and that I felt intimidated by such behavior. As a woman, I feel especially taken advantage of by such tactics and in the future, I will not be returning to this dealership (where I purchased my car) for any service needs."

"Reported oil leak to one dealer - supposedly fixed 12/11/17 camshaft cover gaskets replaced. Car still under warranty. 47,289 miles Car continued to leak oil - now on both sides. Took car to second dealer - found leaking from engine, camcases, valve covers, headgaskets, lower pan. 9 days to fix - had extended warranty that covered cost 58138 miles."

"this car has consistently lost oil since we purchased used several years ago. not a lot, but enough we have to top it off several times between oil changes"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Subaru Outback)

"At my last oil change at 3194 miles from the previous one the oil was so low that it didn't register at all on the dip stick. I am burning oil and apparently there is a part in the middle of some outbacks that is too small and causes the engine to get too hot and burn oil. I have to go to the dealer for the next 3 oil changes: first as a baseline, 2nd for test and 3rd to confirm that I have one of the engines. If I do, I get either a rebuilt or new engine."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Every time we went on a weekend getaway and drove the car for a few hours at a time, we would get a low oil warning so we'd have to buy a quart of oil and replace it. This went on for a couple years. Subarua dealership would perform tests and couldn't find the problem at first but last year we went to them again with the same problem and they concurred that it would need a new short block which is what they did. It was no expense to us."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I drive it like a champ, but don't feel I should have oil consumption issues. Upped the viscosity but still get low oil on road trips, etc. And I get the oil changed every 3500 miles. Subaru dealer said they could do an oil consumption test. I passed on that."

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Had a short block and cylinder head replacement in October 2016. This was covered by warranty. The reason for repair was excessive oil consumption"

Engine rebuild or replacement

"I have a 3.6R Limited Outback, which seems to gulp and not sip oil. I went in for an Oil Consumption test, which failed i.e. the engine consumed more than a quart over 1200 miles. Subsequently, I was told that the engine would need replacement. This is still being discussed with the dealer"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"We experienced excessive oil consumption almost immediately after purchase (40k miles). It was burning about 1qt per 1k miles, and failed an oil consumption test in 600 miles (from oil change to oil warning light). The dealership replaced the short block under warranty around 44k miles. We're about 5k miles into the new block - oil consumption has not been a problem so far, though we noticed a slight drop in mpg"

"There was a hole in the engine block, the OEM engine that came with the car. The replacement cost was $5,600 for another OEM engine. We contacted Subaru to ask about replacing it for free, since it was their faulty engine that broke. We'd taken it to a Subaru-certified mechanic, and because we didn't take it to a dealership they declined, but offered to evaluate the situation if we had the mechanic rebuild the engine and tow it to a dealership. I know enough about dealership mechanics to be wary of this offer, because they can then say that they can't prove the mechanic didn't break it. There was no dealership in the town we lived, so we'd have to pay the mechanic, and then pay someone to tow it 40 miles away, so I wouldn't have done anything differently, but I probably won't buy a subaru again."
