Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Had it replaced and was working better but still consistent issues with lag in back up camera showing when in reverse and sometimes the guidelines don't show up either when reversing. Larry K., ON (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"At night, the display screen is much too bright when in back-up display mode. It is so bright that it blinds me as the driver, and I have to cover it up to see anything. This means a) the backup camera is useless at night, and b) it creates more danger than if there were no backup display at all"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The display became increasingly difficult to see if the screen received any direct sunlight. The screen showed the contacts (sine wave like design about 1/4" inch tall in rows up across the entire screen from top top bottom) for the touch ability of the screen"

Timm B., CA (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Steven G., ID (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Factory sent new screen to dealer with zero miles and now awaiting one with up to date miles so it can be reinstalled :-("

"When the slightest amount of light strikes the screen it feels with the squiggly sine wave type signal and prevents anyone from looking at or changing the radio or any of the other functions of the of the screen including back up camera which I feel is a safety issue. It needs to have a hood over the screen such as they have over the odometer and the tachometer built into the dashboard. I am so annoyed, I may trade the car in for another brand,I have notified both the dealer and the Subaru people of this.Despite the fact that I am generally very pleased with the car"

External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"One specific complaint, but could be viewed as a safety issue. When linking to my iphone 6s using Blu-tooth, I will often use google maps and want to hear the voice directions. Sometimes I want to quickly turn up the volume to immediately hear directions when say a loud truck is passing by. Instantly my Music from my phone will start blaring, startling me and also making it hard to hear the directions. In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The placement of the screen is in a very poor location. When I am driving I cannot see the screen due to the glare of the sun. The screen needs to be recessed into the Dash and adjusted to be more perpendicular."

Harry D., CA (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"We learned the hard way that The navigation system was years out of date when we purchased the car. The dealership wasn't interested in helping update the system and sent me to the web to downloaded a $59 update. I did and nothing change. The navigation system doesn't recognize roads, highways, etc., that have been built in the past 5 years. We now use my wife's phone and google maps as we travel across the country."

"Clock will not change with daylight savings time. Phone system will not keep names and numbers in speed dial. The names stay awhile and then they are gone. ro GPS does not give traffic data accurately."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Subaru Outback)

"I was sent a notice that the gps needs to be updated at a cost of $60.00. Around the same time, when my extended warranty was up, the gps started making numerous mistakes. It became unreliable. The phone worked better. I complained about this problem at the maintenance appointment last month. No solution even though I have less than 30,000 miles on it. These rows of squiggly lines covered the entire screen. The display was difficult to view as a result. The dealer attempted to try to correct the issue by performing a firmware update on the system. Voice commands are not always 'accepted' - frustrating when you try to get somewhere and the system DOES not respond with accurate information - gave me instructions to go a long way around (17 mile detour) to get to a destination that I found out later could have directed me to take a much shorter route - caused me to miss an appointment with a specialist!!!"

"This car has VERY poor quality of being put together. The wind roars from both front side windows. They replaced the small window on sides. Nothing has worked. Dirt comes in around the doors inc. the back hatch door. And the roof rails were replaced as the rail lifted from the roof on both sides causing wind noise from the gaps. So the car was thrown together and the dealer can NOT fix the problems. Especially the front windows. Because of this, especially the poor dealer help we will not buy another Subaru."

This drained the battery and would continue to happen until the passenger door :door closed: switch was replaced. It took 3 days. The door closed switch would not make contact with the body of the car because the seat belts do not retract automatically. The belt buckle got stuck in the door and actually dented the door to the point where it would not connect with the switch on the car body. It fails to operate when I have removed the mat and have removed the net carryall that hangs inside the tailgate. THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECT THAT SUBARU DOESN'T WANT TO ADDRESS. We have had to load the luggage area from the back seat doors several times. ALSO: Unexplained failure of one of two electronic fobs. I went through several reset processes, including one not in the manual. It worked. AND: Car battery failed in less than 3 yrs of ownership."

"The car has a standard keyless entry system - not aftermarket or modified at all. Sometimes it just totally refused to work and I'm locked out of the car. When I am at the door, the car is supposed to sense the key fob and automatically unlock. Sometimes it would not. Even using the unlock button on the key fob would not work. I would either have to use the manual key from inside the key fob, or move away from the car for a few minutes then come up to it again (sometimes more than once). When I complained to the dealer, their service advisor insisted that there was no such feature on their cars and that you always needed to use the physical key. I almost got violent when he told me such a blatant lie. This problem does seem to have gotten better all by itself, the majority of the time (probably 90% or more) it works as it should for the driver's door. However, the car has a power liftgate in the back which almost never works, I sometimes have to cycle through pressing the button on the back, pressing the key fob button and pressing the button by the steering wheel to get the lift gate to open."

Loose/rattling heat shield

"Bought car at a used car dealer. Rattle most noticeable when driving up a hill. Brought car back there TWICE for rattle/vibration due to heat shield. Each time they really did try their best, however it now happens less often but still can happen going up hill or now additionally cn happen on the highway at cruising speed even on fairly flat grade. at its worst, it is very loud makes conversation difficult with passenger next to you. E.g., If I _was_ an Uber driver, I would trade in for another car. NOTE: My prev car was a 2000 Subaru Outback. It also had heat shield rattle noises. The difference is, I could just ask for clamps to be tightened when I had it in for oil change, and it would be fine for a few months. Not so with the 2015... when tightened, it just makes frequency of rattle increase so it is now more if a vibration that seems to vibrate the whole car (?)."

Robert K., CO (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Subaru calls their system EyeSight. This is used for adaptive cruise control, emergency braking and lane departure warnings. They have never been able to get this system to work. Subaru did not honor any warranty on the car. After I had to have the windshield replaced due to a rock, they claimed that 1) The reason the Eye Sight system hadn't worked from the beginning was the car knew that in the future the windshield would be replaced 2) Replacing the windshield voided the warranty on the EyeSight system. Prior to the windshield being replaced, they claimed it didn't work because (and they claim the owner's manual stated this) it doesn't work in bright sunshine, or in raining conditions, or if there are any puddles on the ground. (The system completely shuts down if you drive through a puddle). At the time I bought the car, this system was one of the big selling points. For this, or any of about a dozen other major problems, I could demonstrate the failures to them, but they would say there was no fault code in the computer, so they would not fix it. This includes stupid things such as interior indicator light bulbs blowing out."
