Subaru XV Crosstrek

The Crosstrek is basically an Impreza hatchback with a higher ride height, added body cladding, and large wheels intended to give it a more rugged look. The regular Crosstrek's 148-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine helps it deliver a frugal 26 mpg overall, which made it among the most fuel-efficient SUVs in the class during its time. But this compact vehicle doesn't provide as much cargo room as most small SUVs.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"The handling is tight and the ride is solid. Acceleration could be a little better but the hybrid is much better than the ICE models we tested."

Gary G., DE (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"this is more of a town car but accel'n from stop sighn and onto interstate is plenty adequate. Maneuverability in town is outstanding, even fu;n"

A A., NC (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Very smooth. Does not seem overly "truck-like." Nice package all-around for a small SUV."

Anonymous, KY (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"terrible acceleration. would not buy again because of this"

Anonymous, CT (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I enjoy the quick response and have not noticed any slowness of acceleration. (But, after all...I am a little old retired teacher) Parallel parking in this vehicle was the most enjoyable experience I have ever had."

Anonymous, VT (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It's kind of pokey. Getting on highways is a little slow task"

Richard N., CT (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The acceleration on this vehicle is attrocious. I live in the mountains and that is a constant issue. I like to say my car is gutless."

Anonymous, CO (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Very peppy and responsive handling. Easy to maneuver"

Anne B., PA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"quick response exc turning circle easy to drive"

Anonymous, WA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Excellent acceleration with the Hybrid. Better acceleration than the non-hybrid models I have driven. great handling"

D R., UT (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"My Crosstrek is very easy to parallel park and maneuver in town with a great turning radius. I have had several times on the highway where the braking probably saved my life and I feel secure and confident in general with how the car handles in all kinds of traffic. It got me through some deeply flooded streets last summer, great in blizzards/ice last winter, and is a champ on dirt roads. Good sight lines too, the back camera works well."

Sara H., MA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Despite the higher stance the car does not role on turns. Peppy engine, CVT works well."

Anonymous, NY (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It has poor acceleration, but very good handling and is amazing in the snow."

Todd J., WA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It is amazingly shift for such a small engine and corners extremely well too."

Anonymous, NV (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Terrible acceleration. Engine sounds like it's whining even when RPM's are low."

Anonymous, CT (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"A little too much body roll for my taste, but installed Subaru 19mm rear sway bars and this improved handling on curves. This is the stock size for non-U.S. CrossTreks. Ride comfort not effected. The 2.0 liter engine does not deliver head-snapping acceleration, but is adequate. The faux steps in the CVT are absolutely stupid. They reduce acceleration and mileage -- just because people expect to feel and hear gear steps. My first CVT experience was with a 500cc scooter (capable up to 90+ mph) that had linear, load responsive ratio change. That is the way a CVT should work. I understand that Subaru is making the newer transmissions even more notchy."

Larry C., NE (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"feels sluggish when making sudden acceleration, such as left turns"

Randall E., AZ (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Great handling"

RICK L., CA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"This is a very capable automobile in any/all weather conditions. It is a joy to drive."

Anonymous, RI (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It is well balanced and has had some long drives, it is comfortable and cruises at 70+ all day."

FREDICK H., OR (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"This care won't burn rubber but it flies past them in the snow. It is very sure footed and I know my wife will will make it home in the worst snows."

Anonymous, CO (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Needs to be turbo charged."

Anonymous, IL (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Acceleration is a bit weak, even with my manual transmission. The handling however is wonderful."

Anonymous, OR (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Eyesight system is helpful, improves the driving experience and adds a sense of safety. Seems to be reliable, no disappointments"

LOUIS Z., WA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Poor acceleration"

Anonymous, OR (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Not very peppy. Handling very good. Takes a long time to get up to speed when merging or cornering into traffic."

Anonymous, SK (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Glad I read consumer reports before I bought this car. The manual makes the slow acceleration tolerable. Noise in the vehicle is as stated in your report and is tolerable."

Anonymous, OR (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The CVT saves gas, but means a slower acceleration time. I'll take the gas savings."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I'd like to have better acceleration, possibly a larger engine, and definitely a 6th gear-it's a manual transmission."

KELLY A., CA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Handles very well. Always feels like I have control, on curves, and in snow and rain."

EDWARD W., MI (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Acceleration is poor. Feels like the engine is too small for the car; even with a standard transmission."

Anonymous, CT (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The car is perfect for city driving. Maneuverable, turns very tight circles. Good vision."

ALLAN A., NC (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Acceleration is lacking power. Subaru needs to use the 2.5 liter instead of the 2.0 liter engine"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"There is a small amount of travel on my accelerator before the car moves."

Anonymous, NY (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It was hesitant to buy because it was supposedly under powered. I have had it in all kinds of driving conditions and find it to be wonderful. Acceleration is wonderful for around town as is handling. Great road car too."

Anonymous, KY (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Acceleration is sluggish compared to my previous Forester. Seems as if the clutch doesn't engage as fast."

ELISE F., OH (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The handling on this car is like an expensive sport car. It has a wide stance and really hugs the road. You can really enjoy driving it."

B C., OH (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The Crosstrek all wheel drive handles great in all weather conditions. It has plenty of speed and pick up for a vehicle that is designed for safety and comfort. If you wish to go from 0-60 in 5 seconds, then buy a sports car. If you want an all around excellent vehicle that delivers in all road and off road conditions, then the Crosstrek is your car."

MICHAEL M., PA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Seats are comfortable, and the ride is smooth and comfortable. Noise levels (wind & road noise) are a bit high, but tolerable. Still unsure if the factory tires are cause of the road noise or not, and I won't know that until I finally wear out the original tires and replace them."

Anonymous, OR (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The seats are OK but the ride is a little rough and the road noise level seems high. I may be looking for a sedan with a smother ride soon."

Sally P., OR (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"seats and comfort are excellent. The Geolander tires are rather noisy and not as smooth as I would have expected (although I realize this is a sport model car and not a family sedan)"

Anonymous, VT (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Comfort is reasonable overall. There are ongoing vibrations from the speaker covers."

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It's noisier than I'd like"

Tim S., ME (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I replaced the tires and the noise level in the car dropped dramatically. I wish Subaru would put better (quieter) tires on to begin with. It sure made a difference in the ride and the noise."

Toby W., CO (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Everything is fine except the seats which are hard."

Anonymous, NV (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"As much as I love Subaru( and we had 6 over the past 14 years) the seats are just garbage.... I cannot sit in for more than an hour without back pain; I'm not the only one! If I compare to an old truck i use to haul wood, the seats much more comfortable Subaru really needs to have a look at this one..."

Anonymous, PA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Comfortable ride, but quite noisy on the road"

Troy C., OH (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Ride is smooth and seat gives good support. Adjustable lumbar support would be nice"

Anne B., PA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The head rests bend your head too far forward and the lumbar support is non-existent. I like the manual seat adjustments, however. Faster and less clunky than electronic ones."

Anonymous, CO (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Difficult entry/exit"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"We really like the Crosstrek except for 2 things. First we had a Honda CR-V before and it had lots of road noise. This car has much less but it is still a problem, especially for those in the back seat trying to listen to people in the front seat. The other dissapointment is that the gas mileage is so low. Around town driving is only 21 mpg."

Anonymous, CT (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The seats are very comfortable, and ride is nice. The climate control works very well. It's a little noisy inside."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Fantastic car overall. Only downside is acceleration noise"

MARKUS D., ID (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"smooth handling and just overall good"

GEORGE S., VA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I do not like the cabin noise when using air conditioning and the blind spot from driver's side looking to the right for traffic It gets very dusty for a car with pollen filter and the ride could be smother I love the Eyesight!"

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"wish car was taller off ground....should have bought the Outback instead."

JOHN C., WY (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"seats are heated and can be raised/lowered. Climate control is great, but there is a learning curve. rides great for a small SUV."

BETH R., NC (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Road notice noticeable. Bouncy ride. Comfortable seating"

Anonymous, OR (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Excellent seats even on long journeys even though there is no electric seating option offered. Ride is excellent and very smooth around town, on the highway and over bumps. It is quiet around town and no louder than other small crossover competition on the highway. Like climate control knobs vs on-screen systems."

DALE T., TX (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Consumers Reports says Noise is a factor. NOT AT ALL. First car I have owned with heated seats!"

SCOTT C., CA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The seats feel like low end furniture; the springs poke at you. It rides like a truck, rough ride; and road noise is very annoying"

ANNA M., NY (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Ride is wonderful, and the heated seats are heaven for my lower back on longer trips."

Anonymous, OR (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Needs power seat option. Seat heater controls are in awkward place. Also the electrical problem was a bad battery."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Seats are uncomfortable for lo.g rides"

Anonymous, ME (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"it is a fun car to drive and gets great MPG."

F H., OR (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Excellent value regardless of trim level. Larger than a sub-compact crossover, smaller than a compact crossover. That's what we love."

Dale T., AR (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"excellent value, well worth what we paid"

Tom M., WV (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"All wheel drive, reasonable pricing, hatchback capability, good MPG"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I like my car."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"God value. Great safety features. Logical controls. Versatile configuration"

David C., CA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Very good value. Ir's simple, drives well, and practical"

Tim S., ME (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Love the car. Not sure I woudd splurge for the leather again."

Anonymous, VT (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"No unexpected repairs, below average cost and higher than average resale value."

Todd J., WA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The price was right for the car. Used but low miles."

GEORGE S., VA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I was looking for the most fuel efficient hybrid SUV I could buy. The top two contenders were the Subaru Crosstrek and the Lexus NX 300X. I used their online build a car apps and I chose the same accessories that I wanted for each car, for the same options for each car, the Subaru was $20,000 less expensive. So I went with the Subaru."

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Tremendous value for the price. Excellent reliability, good gas mileage, and AWD function."

MICHAEL J., NC (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"We have always liked the reliability of Subarus and so far this one has met that expectation. The Crosstrek handles the curvy roads well for a small SUV and gets very decent gas mileage for an all-wheel drive vehicle. I do wish we had a 2.5 engine instead of the 2.0. It struggles to get up and go and is a little noisy. The electronics in the dash have been easy to learn-this is our first "connected" car. The back up camera is definitely a nice feature here on the farm. I am overall happy w"

LAUREN P., VA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Great Gas Mileage. Reasonable price. Used a Buyers Broker service through my Credit Union, and my own indepth CR supported research and pricing searching could not match their low cost, selection, and I did not have to go to Dealerships to make the purchase. They got it trucked to my driveway at NO COST from 300 miles away."

SCOTT C., CA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"A Great year round all season car that's practical and a good value for the money."

Anonymous, IL (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Insufficient storage space compared to my recent Toyota matrix."

Anonymous, NY (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Better than a prius"

SELVYN C., CA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"the Crosstrek is an inprezza with higher springs. It does not justify three thousand dollars more."

JON L., MN (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Good value. Fun to drive and solid quality for minimal cost with excellent durability."

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Such a great car for the money, many cars later I go more than I paid for!"

DENA D., CA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Crosstrek is extremely well priced vs most compact cross-overs and even most small sub-compact crossovers--even if fully loaded. I consider it a bargain plus it's retained value is superb."

DALE T., TX (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Great all wheel drive car for a great low price."

Anonymous, CO (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Needs LED upgrade."

Anonymous, IL (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Love the way it looks. Great color. Love the wheels. Good visibility. Wish it had a sunroof."

Anonymous, KY (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The Crosstrek is well-designed and well-engineered. It is room, has plenty of storage, and sits up higher which is tremendous for off road driving or deep snow."

MICHAEL M., PA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The (chrome?) detailing on the console reflects sunlight into my eyes when driving. Even the red "flasher" button will reflect light at times. Center recessed information panel can be nearly impossible to read in certain light."

ELISE F., OH (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Very surprise how much we like it. Nice room inside but still feels small good pick up and sits higher off the ground"

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Sporty and fun to drive"

SELVYN C., CA (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I absolutely love the style of this vehicle, especially the outside features."

SALLY T., UT (2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"She's a beauty! She's Hyperblue and EVERYONE who has seen it comments on how beautiful she is!! One coworker summed it up perfectly when she said, "whenever I see that car of yours, it makes me happy!""
