The 4Runner is among the best off-road-ready SUVs in this price range. Despite retaining a body-on-frame construction, the 4Runner rides better than some car-based SUVs. While its cabin is very roomy and quiet, the 4Runner doesn't provide the nimble, carlike handling of car-based models. Still, it is sound and secure. Side- and curtain-airbags are standard.

What Owners Say

"Fun, reliable and easy"

Anonymous, AZ (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Abs and traction control is out on this vehicle. Without those features, the ability to not fishtail and lose control in slick weather is extremely difficult. By the time you feel the backend coming around, it's too late to correct utilizing threshold breaking and counter stear. 4 wheel drive is very good though, love the lockable transfer case."

Seth V., MO (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"It is very dependable"

Anonymous, IN (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"The V8 and transmission in the 4Runner are an incredibly smooth combination delivering reliable power that feels refined."

Danny K., PA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"We use our 4Runner to pull our 18' trailer and the handling is very good. We don't experience any sway or issues. The only issue we have is that the 6 cylinder engine strains on long inclines, so an 8 cylinder would be more preferable in these instances."

Robert S., WA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 2004 4-Runner is one of the last 8-cylinders made for that Model, so, for the weight of the vehicle, it has more than enough power, when needed."

Anonymous, NJ (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"The V8 engine has lots of power"

Barry C., MD (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"The handling and acceleration is exceptional. I'm on the road 6 days out of the week and these items are essential to my comfort and feeling of confidence that my car will perform as needed when required. This is all part of the value that I've gotten."

Anonymous, AK (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great acceleration, great handling, great ride"

Robert S., FL (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"great in any terrain-snow or sand the big v8 just pulls through"

Anonymous, NC (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 3-speed automatic V6 does a better job with acceleration and towing than most V8 trucks that I have owned in the past. I can confidently tow my camper and utility trailers."

Anonymous, MN (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"If you want a sports car, this is not for you. But it drives beautifully for what it is, a four-wheel-drive SUV. The ride is smooth, if a bit firm, and the high profile gives great visibility in freeway traffic."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"I have issue with casual cutting out but dealer cannot duplicate the problem so they have said nothing is wrong."

"great to see"

PAT G., PA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"For a serious 4x4 the ride isn't half bad."

Anonymous, VA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Excellent off-road handling. It goes almost anywhere a Jeep will go."

LORRAINE T., OR (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very smooth ride. Handling is a little loose."

Anonymous, AL (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"My vehicle is a V8, so it is a bit of a gas guzzler. However, new passengers remark with "Holy Cr@p!" when I am accelerating onto a freeway. The 4Runner is faster than it looks!"

GREG W., BC (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Truck based vehicle handles more truckish than car like. The v6 is marginal in towing ability and quick responses."

Anonymous, MI (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Very comfortable ride, even after 14 years, road noise is good."

Anonymous, SC (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seat belts are badly designed and uncomfortable. The seats are horrid for long trips."

Anonymous, NC (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Narrow seats. Quiet bouncy ride."

Anonymous, PA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Vehicle is still quiet even though it is 14 years old although the drivers seat is starting to get a bit worn in the cushioning."

Danny K., PA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Front driver seat is TERRIBLE. It's a manual with an up/down adjuster which fails due to body weight. This resets you all the way to the floor."

Seth V., MO (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats and navigation are great"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"I love the seats of my 2004 Toyota 4Runner - they are the most comfortable seats I have seen in any vehicle I have owned, rented, or ridden in. I wish Toyota would put these seats in all of their vehicles. The ride of my 4Runner is pretty smooth for such a tall and capable 4 wheel drive off road vehicle. Bumps that I feel in very many vehicles seem to be smoothed over when riding over them in my 4Runner. My 4Runner is very, very quiet inside, and this makes for a very relaxing driving experience. The V6 quietly rumbles away in a muted fashion, and the wind noise is almost non-existent."

Anonymous, ME (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats are firm and comfortable, but the driving position is not good."

Terje D., AL (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Too much ride noise.... it’s not a quiet ride."

Anonymous, TX (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Driver's and Passenger's front seat has the best back support that we have experienced thus far in an vehicle."

Jonathan P., TN (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats are comfortable and the noise level isn't too bad for a vehicle based on a truck chassis."

David F., TX (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats are not comfortable on long trips. Seat cushion area is a bit short leading to leg fatigue. Seat cushion not soft a bit ridged again on a long trip cause some lower back pain."

Anonymous, CO (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"This is my husband's vehicle and, while he is very comfortable in the front seats, the headrest pushes my head forward too far and the "bucket" seats are too rounded and push my shoulders forward. I will not take any but short trips in this vehicle."

Nancy D., FL (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very noisy from day one - we even wrote to Toyota about it. Always sounded like there was a window open. No safety issues, just annoying, especially from a brand new car! By the way, Toyota made it clear they just didn't care. The ride itself is very comfortable."

Anonymous, ON (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Occasional squeaks are hard to find and annoying."

Joe E., NC (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Cabin noise is evident even at low speeds. At higher mileage the seats have begun to crack and the padding is poking through."

Paul P., TX (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"You feel every bump."

Anonymous, FL (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Still comfortable after 14 years. Not much noisier. A very rugged vehicle"

Henry J., FL (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"I can drive for 8 hours plus with good back support with comfortable seating and I am a small person. I have read that most cars are designed for an average 6 ft tall man. the interior has worn well, still looks good after 14 years. My son is taking the car for an extra."

Linda H., FL (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"For an SUV the 4Runner is comfortable and quiet. The suspension transfers a lot of bumps into the vehicle so the ride is pretty average."

J M., IN (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Nothing...this is the best vehicle I have owned in 50 years by a significant margin. Only gripe...not currently offered in a V-8."

D O., OR (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Front seats are very comfortable."

Anonymous, WA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"I just love my 4runner!"

ANN H., UT (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great ride, very quiet. There is another model with X- Reas suspension (fluid suspension in x pattern between front and rear) and it had no body roll, whereas mine has limited body roll."

GREG W., BC (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"very comfortable seats and up high driving view"

WILLIAM S., NJ (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"not enough space when the back seats are down"

PETER K., BC (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats are comfortable to sit in, but the leg room is a little short in the front and a LOT short in the back."

R A., MN (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Good upright seat position and reasonable comfort."

Anonymous, MI (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Wind noise, air mix servos clack when in the middle warm air positions due to servo positioning errors. Have fixed one but the other is too difficult to access"

Anonymous, TX (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"All elements of comfort are excellent EXCEPT the seats which have insufficient support under the thighs and cannot move far enough back to be comfortable. I am 6'1". My wife is 5'9" but the passenger side seat is worse than the driver's."

WILLIAM C., NC (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"seat heigth great to see out of"

PAT G., PA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"I am aware of general noise at times."

BARBARA S., CA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Unbelievably comfortable ride and seats. Very pleased!"

Anonymous, TN (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very quiet and smooth ride. Driving position is not so good."

Anonymous, AL (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"My wife does not feel as comfortable in the drivers seat of this car as she did the '91 4-runner that we traded in to get this one, plus she says she can't adjust it to achieve that level of comfort. Further, I have had trouble with the tire pressure regulators and dash light."

NEIL T., OK (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Performance overall"

DAVID R., ON (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Noise level with windows open makes it difficult to hear radio and or conversations."

Herbert R., NJ (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Awesome vehicle. 14 years old. Only minor repairs for wear and tear. No system failures, and still going strong."

David C., CA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"With the high mileage that I have on my Toyota, I have, certainly, received my money's worth. Two years ago, I made a cross-country trip from coast to coast with only one flat tire and a chipped windshield during the entire, 6,000-mile trip."

Anonymous, NJ (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"14 years later, still running like a champ, probably because we have stuck to the maintenance schedule from day 1."

Anonymous, SC (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great utility vehicle. Gets me and my horse trailer + horse where I want to go [and out/back again] without the cost, size and handling issues of a full-size truck. Flexible interior I can overnite in for trailride weekends."

Anonymous, VA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"very nice ride. Not a tin can feel as with some other vehicles"

Anonymous, KS (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very reliable for a 14-year old car"

Elaine W., HI (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"My 2004 Toyota 4Runner has over 246,000 miles on it, and looks very, very new for its age. It has been a good value considering the price I paid for it 15 years ago for it, but I do feel like it required a significant amount of maintenance and parts over the years that I put the most miles on the vehicle. I also had to have the frame replaced 4 years ago due to rust issues that Toyota has had with its box frame trucks. However Toyota paid for the frame replacement, and installation costs which was a great thing - standing behind their vehicle at 11 years old. I did, however, have to replace my rear hatch after a rust hole around the rear glass ate through the metal of the hatch. This cost over 6,000 dollars out of pocket, and I had this done when the frame was replaced."

Anonymous, ME (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Bought new for a fair price. 4Runner has been reliable, comfortable, sturdy off road, and an all around great value. It does everything well, and 14-1/2 years later I still love it."

Anonymous, WA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Little needed in the way of repairs."

Linda H., FL (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"The value you get out of this vehicle is amazing. We have not had many major problems."

Anonymous, FL (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"EXTREMELY reliable"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Exceptional value, especially because we keep our cars and drive them for ten years or more. Repair and maintenance costs have been very low. Reliability is outstanding. In 270,000 miles, we have had only a couple of major repairs and we do not do routine maintenance as well as we should."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"The good thing is, the 4Runner lasts forever. The bad thing is, the 4-Runner lasts forever! Will be several more years before I can get a new 4Runner!"

David-Donna P., SC (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"We have had very few problems with this car."

Ellen K., CA (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Still running like new after 13 years"

Anonymous, NC (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"With 175000 maintenance very responsible."

Anonymous, TX (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"It is still good looking; powerful; use 4wd often when we choose to drive this vehicle."

NANCY D., CO (2004 Toyota 4Runner)

"Toyota replaced the engine after I spent approximately 1000 $ trying to fix a problem. And. Didn't give a cause or refund money I spent The car started to fall apart after about 100,000 miles. I spent 2-3 thousand a year fixing things radiator engine gaskets exhaust systems Windows doors running gear. Must have gotten a bad one"
