Driving Experience
Includes acceleration and handling
What Owners Say
"We needed a true 4-wheel drive SUV for the kinds of family excursions we take. The vehicle would also have to provide daily driving duties. The 4Runner delivers this spot-on in a manageable size. Its acceleration and handling are exceptional compared to special purpose off road vehicles, while providing more than acceptable compromise compared to car-based mini-vans or crossovers."
Anonymous, NC (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Acceleration is not great."
Anonymous, TX (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Excellent on and off road vehicle. I wish that it came in standard shift."
JOANN D., TX (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Some hesitation when trying to accelerate rapidly from complete stop. Toyota claims it is part of the eco-computer which overrides the accelerator."
ROBERT W., FL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Toyota made a mistake when they discontinued the V8 in the 4Runners. I had a 2007 model that I loved, and a 2002 before that. I do a lot of highway driving and the 6 cylinder's acceleration is inadequate."
S S., VA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Handles like a truck."
Anonymous, VT (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"We bought it to pull our 17 foot fiberglass travel trailer. We are very pleased with the job it does."
RICHARD R., TX (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Toyota needs to offer larger engine. The 4Runner is great vehicle but is underpowered"
Anonymous, CA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"V6 has slow pick up and lots of noise. I had a 2005 with a small V8 that was much better."
JOHN H., AB (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"It is a little underpowered. It is the best handling SUV I have ever owned. It is the best snow vehicle I have ever owned."
Steven H., CO (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"It's about what I would expect from a 4 wheel drive truck. A bit sluggish and ride is ok."
Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Underpowered."
Anonymous, AB (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"The 4Runnner is a rugged vehicle but provides the comforts of a luxury vehicle. After 4 years and 60k+ miles, my 4Runner performs as well as the day I drove it off the lot"
Richard H., OK (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Needs more power"
Doug T., VA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"it has to much body roll, both front to back and side to side."
Anonymous, FL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Fun ride and nice interior accommodations."
Anonymous, GA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"The 2014 model seems slightly wider than any other year which makes it a challenge in parking lots and especially on ferries. However, the handling is amazing and its wide stance allows me to take corners faster than I will ever need to. Acceleration is satisfactory. I would not say this is necessarily a "peppy" vehicle, but there is plenty of power and acceleration for highway/freeway driving. I live in rural area with one main road, which is a 55 mph hwy. The 4Runner is able to pull out onto the highway safely and quickly, but it always seems to be straining as I accelerate."
Brian V., WA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"acceleration is poor."
Stuart O., CO (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"I really wish they still had a V8 version of the 4Runner. It seems a little slow when getting up to speed."
Daniel S., CA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Handles very well, acceleration especially when passing is exceptional"
Paul M., NY (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"A very secure feeling on all driving conditions."
Bob S., CO (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Acceleration is adequate. Would like to see the 8-cylinder engine re-introduced as an option so payload could be increased. I like the size of the 4Runner but the 6 cylinder prevents me from hauling a travel trailer that I’d like to own."
Anonymous, IA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"4runner is especially good off road but really sloppy on the road. On the road at higher speeds, the 4runner seems on the verge of becoming unstable. I'd not like to have to brake or steer hard at speed. At speed, breaking hard causes the front to dive severely and the truck feels like it might slide sideways at which point I think it might roll. Comfort, driving, handling, acceleration, etc is otherwise excellent. I love my 4runner."
G H., TX (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Always dependable. Very consistent and has not failed ever."
Robert W., FL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Don't like the slow to respond acceleration at highway speeds, you have to push accelerator to floor to get it to downshift. It has a surprisingly smooth ride for a big SUV."
Thaddeus H., OR (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"All wheel drive, sits high for good visibility and view. Good acceleration and handling. All controls are easily accessible while driving."
Ernie H., IL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Not really designed for urban driving where acceleration and handling are important. Best handling on rougher roads."
Anonymous, MT (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"We use the 4Runner to tow our 3500 lb. trailer. It has adequate power, even on steep grades. Handling is good. We generally get over 15mpg when towing."
Anonymous, CA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"It drives and handles as I expected and Toyota stands behind their cars."
Jeffrey C., CA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Handling is excellent. It is a tall vehicle with high center of gravity which is important to remember. But it takes tight turns or high speed maneuvers readily and safely. It had a six cylinder engine so acceleration is acceptable but not drag strip worthy."
James F., AZ (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"Driving experience is satisfactory Turning radius is quite poor Engine noise is problematic Visibility is problematic—windows are too small No other issues"
Charles V., MI (2014 Toyota 4Runner)"not very peppy"
Larry G., TX (2014 Toyota 4Runner)
"I have never been lacking of power while driving, whether it's on road or off there has always been excess. Taking this into account when discussing the decent fuel economy says quite a bit. The KDSS system also offers superb handling in the corners, the vehicle has never feld sloshy, but always very tight."
DANIEL T., AE (2014 Toyota 4Runner)
