While almost every other midsized SUV had moved to car-based construction, the 4Runner remained an old-school, body-on-frame SUV, which was great for off-roading but not much else. The ride is unsettled and handling is mediocre at best. Limited trim versions have a sport suspension package with somewhat better control, but a stiffer ride. Off-road is where the 4Runner excels.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"I have never been lacking of power while driving, whether it's on road or off there has always been excess. Taking this into account when discussing the decent fuel economy says quite a bit. The KDSS system also offers superb handling in the corners, the vehicle has never feld sloshy, but always very tight."

DANIEL T., AE (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"We needed a true 4-wheel drive SUV for the kinds of family excursions we take. The vehicle would also have to provide daily driving duties. The 4Runner delivers this spot-on in a manageable size. Its acceleration and handling are exceptional compared to special purpose off road vehicles, while providing more than acceptable compromise compared to car-based mini-vans or crossovers."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Acceleration is not great."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Excellent on and off road vehicle. I wish that it came in standard shift."

JOANN D., TX (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Some hesitation when trying to accelerate rapidly from complete stop. Toyota claims it is part of the eco-computer which overrides the accelerator."

ROBERT W., FL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Toyota made a mistake when they discontinued the V8 in the 4Runners. I had a 2007 model that I loved, and a 2002 before that. I do a lot of highway driving and the 6 cylinder's acceleration is inadequate."

S S., VA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Handles like a truck."

Anonymous, VT (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"We bought it to pull our 17 foot fiberglass travel trailer. We are very pleased with the job it does."

RICHARD R., TX (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Toyota needs to offer larger engine. The 4Runner is great vehicle but is underpowered"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"V6 has slow pick up and lots of noise. I had a 2005 with a small V8 that was much better."

JOHN H., AB (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"It is a little underpowered. It is the best handling SUV I have ever owned. It is the best snow vehicle I have ever owned."

Steven H., CO (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"It's about what I would expect from a 4 wheel drive truck. A bit sluggish and ride is ok."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Underpowered."

Anonymous, AB (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 4Runnner is a rugged vehicle but provides the comforts of a luxury vehicle. After 4 years and 60k+ miles, my 4Runner performs as well as the day I drove it off the lot"

Richard H., OK (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Needs more power"

Doug T., VA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"it has to much body roll, both front to back and side to side."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Fun ride and nice interior accommodations."

Anonymous, GA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 2014 model seems slightly wider than any other year which makes it a challenge in parking lots and especially on ferries. However, the handling is amazing and its wide stance allows me to take corners faster than I will ever need to. Acceleration is satisfactory. I would not say this is necessarily a "peppy" vehicle, but there is plenty of power and acceleration for highway/freeway driving. I live in rural area with one main road, which is a 55 mph hwy. The 4Runner is able to pull out onto the highway safely and quickly, but it always seems to be straining as I accelerate."

Brian V., WA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"acceleration is poor."

Stuart O., CO (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"I really wish they still had a V8 version of the 4Runner. It seems a little slow when getting up to speed."

Daniel S., CA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Handles very well, acceleration especially when passing is exceptional"

Paul M., NY (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"A very secure feeling on all driving conditions."

Bob S., CO (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Acceleration is adequate. Would like to see the 8-cylinder engine re-introduced as an option so payload could be increased. I like the size of the 4Runner but the 6 cylinder prevents me from hauling a travel trailer that I’d like to own."

Anonymous, IA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"4runner is especially good off road but really sloppy on the road. On the road at higher speeds, the 4runner seems on the verge of becoming unstable. I'd not like to have to brake or steer hard at speed. At speed, breaking hard causes the front to dive severely and the truck feels like it might slide sideways at which point I think it might roll. Comfort, driving, handling, acceleration, etc is otherwise excellent. I love my 4runner."

G H., TX (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Always dependable. Very consistent and has not failed ever."

Robert W., FL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Don't like the slow to respond acceleration at highway speeds, you have to push accelerator to floor to get it to downshift. It has a surprisingly smooth ride for a big SUV."

Thaddeus H., OR (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"All wheel drive, sits high for good visibility and view. Good acceleration and handling. All controls are easily accessible while driving."

Ernie H., IL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Not really designed for urban driving where acceleration and handling are important. Best handling on rougher roads."

Anonymous, MT (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"We use the 4Runner to tow our 3500 lb. trailer. It has adequate power, even on steep grades. Handling is good. We generally get over 15mpg when towing."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"It drives and handles as I expected and Toyota stands behind their cars."

Jeffrey C., CA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Handling is excellent. It is a tall vehicle with high center of gravity which is important to remember. But it takes tight turns or high speed maneuvers readily and safely. It had a six cylinder engine so acceleration is acceptable but not drag strip worthy."

James F., AZ (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Driving experience is satisfactory Turning radius is quite poor Engine noise is problematic Visibility is problematic—windows are too small No other issues"

Charles V., MI (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"not very peppy"

Larry G., TX (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The air-condition is not ass good or strong as it was on our 2007 Toyota Siena we traded in for my 2014 4Runner. It was replaced once already and it still is not working as well as it should. The air pressure is kind of weak coming out of the vents. It was much stronger on our Siena van and also stronger on my 2004 Highlander."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats great. To much wind noise and rides a little firm."

PAUL L., FL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"I find it hard to get comfortable enough in the front passenger seat to fall asleep"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Folded down 3rd seat takes up storage room and it cannot be taken out. A wheel chair cannot be stood up but has to be laid down taking yp all of the space. The 2nd seat doe does not allow maxim extra space."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Needs more power and better ride"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"I absolutely love the big knobs for the climate control and radio functions. They make no look adjustments as easy to make as i can imagine. I also drive fleet vehicles 8 to 10k per year (Chevy, Ford, etc) and find the buttons for these functions very unpleasant and difficult to use at best. The big knobs got knocked badly in most reviews for the 4Runner as being stupid macho styling exercises, but they're one of the things I like best about the vehicle. The thing I like best about the seat"

BRENT M., MT (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats are very comfortable and the ride soaks up most bumps"

George H., VA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Good seats"

Anonymous, IL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very comfortable large SUV with towing, carrying and off road capability."

Stephen S., FL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Nothing stands out, The seats are just conformable"

Jeffrey C., CA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats are hard and the leather not as plush as I expected. My Tahoe had very comfortable seats but I wanted the reliability and agility of the 4 Runner. Ride could be a bit more smooth."

Anonymous, IA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Cooling no longer works. Memory has never worked correctly."

Anonymous, SC (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"To much wind noise, motor no smooth and ride stiff."

Paul L., FL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"I am short, (5’ 2‿) and the seats are extremely comfortable for me while driving."

Irish K., OR (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"I bought my 4Runner to be used like a truck - hauling cargo and toys (boats and ATVs) and it does a great job. It’s a quiet ride, though it handles like a truck. The suspension is stiff, great for towing and off-roading. It’s a comfortable ride unless the road is washboard-y and then it jiggles me around. It’s responsive and handles well. The interior looks and feels more luxurious than other similar models. I picked this vehicle because it’s one of the few SUVs built on a truck frame, and it has an impressive reliability rating."

Ingrid W., ME (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"great inside. Very comfortable smooth ride."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Purchased it three months ago. Love the seats- especially the heating and cooling feature. The road noise isn't the same as a luxury model, but it is minimal. Ride is slightly rougher/bumpier than my wife would prefer, but we need to remember this is a body on chassis 4x4. I do wish the stock wheels weren't so large, but the rims are great. I think the large wheels and lower profile tires cause the ride to be rougher than necessary. The seats are extremely supportive and comfortable, second only to true luxury vehicle seats. Very satisfied with what I paid for."

Brian V., WA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"After 4 years and 60k miles, this vehicle rides as well as the day I rolled it off the lot."

Richard H., OK (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Driver seat need more mid and lower back support."

Robert W., FL (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Very reliable, best vehicle I have ever had in foul weather."

Steven H., CO (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Excellent value for the amount of vehicle. Great 7-seat SUV."

Anonymous, AB (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"The voice command works fine for the radio but when using it to call it most often cannot recognize the command. For example, if I say call Joe Smith, it will respond, calling Faranacci Pizza. Nuts. I’ve tried and tried using the systems learning app. I think it recognizes Japanese."

John M., OH (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great dependability on all components except electronic controld"

Mark S., WI (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"I have owned four 4Runners since 2004. The resale value is off the charts. The vehicle is by far the best SUV in its class and has zero limitations when compared to the competition. I have put nearly 200k on them prior to replacing and have never had a major repair."

Steven J., CO (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Solid reliable vehicle that maintains decent value. Would like to see improved mileage?"

Anonymous, AB (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"great vehicle, reliable"

M L., UT (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"I have owned 33 vehicles in my lifetime (I am 65). The most trouble-free were Toyota. I have never had an unscheduled repair with this Toyota 4Runner in the nearly 119,000 miles I have owned it in 4 yrs. 4 months. All of my Toyota 4Runners have been trouble-free. I have owned 9. The last one, a 2007, I put 190,000 miles on before selling it to my closest friends: it only needed one repair, a starter, at 151,000 miles. I expect to get at least 300,000 miles out of this vehicle."

Art H., CO (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"When purchased it was very good value for what we paid"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Extremely reliable"

Bob S., CO (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Outstanding. A great daily driver and a terrific off road machine at a relatively bargain price. It is highly reliable and should last 200,000 miles or about 18 years of driving. Maintenance costs are trivial."

James F., AZ (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"I love my Toyota"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"It's very "aggressive" looking and I have always received praise stating the same. The interior is also VERY refined, both in style and comfort, for being such a "ruggedized" vehicle and I also get great comments on it regularly."

DANIEL T., AE (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Outside appearance is great"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"Exterior style is very bland. No chrome trim or other styling bling. Form follows function very well but a little sparkle would be good."

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Toyota 4Runner)

"It looks very stylish"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Toyota 4Runner)
