While almost every other midsized SUV has moved to car-based construction, the 4Runner remains an old-school, body-on-frame SUV, good for off-roading but not much else. The ride is unsettled and handling is mediocre at best; Limited trim versions have a sports suspension with somewhat better control but a stiffer ride. Off-road is where the 4Runner excels. Ground clearance is generous and underbody skid plates are standard.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"The ride has really improved from our '05 4Runner. Much more smooth and stable."

Colleen A., WA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"acceleration is adequate, could use more. Transmission would need better ratios. I would like to see six speed manual."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Lack of engine power."

Michele P., CA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"It has full time 4 wheel drive thanks to the Torsen differential at the center. With the traction control makes it really grip the road. On ice the traction was amazing. Off road mud holes, no problem. It would be difficult to get stuck."

Larry S., OK (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"I explained this in the previous post"

Anonymous, WI (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Drives great. Four wheel drive is amazing in snow."

Anonymous, ME (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Drives well and handles well for its size. Acceleration is poor, its under powered."

Robert L., NE (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The brakes are WAY too sensitive and easily lock up or go into ABS activation with minimal pedal pressure, and in some cases the pedal feels like it pulls away from your foot on its own. Ride is comfortable but you get pretty bad body roll of the vehicle in turns."

Anonymous, KY (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 4Runners performance in acceleration is very sluggish and non responsive compared to other 6 Cyl SUVs I have been in. Handles a bit wobbly"

Anonymous, KY (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"This is a truck. Stop comparing it to unibody SUVs. I don't expect it to ride or handle like a car. I do expect it to run over rocks, through mud and snow, and on rough roads without falling apart. This is why we bought it."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The KDSS suspension is a game changer for an old solid rear axle dinosaur of an SUV. The thick swaybars make the big vehicle dance on twisty roads in ways that I would never expect. The transmission could use another gear between 3 and 4, but it is otherwise always responsive."

Quentin B., WV (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Exceptional off road capability, handles very well for a SUV with TRD suspension"

Bruce H., CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"We use this vehicle for towing - handles anything we tow and goes over any type of terrain with confidence."

Robert S., NY (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"You have to floor the has pedal to fell like you are going anywhere and it just does not have the power in the hills I would like it to have. It is sluggish of the line and takes a while to get up to speed. Not a fan of this engine."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Handling is improved and acceleration is acceptable of a SUV"

Anonymous, WA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"good pick up and overall drive is comfortable but not great"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Acceleration falls short of what you would expect from a 4 liter engine. Does not handle well on the highway especially with a cross wind."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Slow acceleration and sloppy handling. Drives like an old truck."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Less the. 30k miles vehicle shakes and shimmies when breaking, it’s under warranty but the refused to fix rotors that are warped prematurely, considering the break pads (original) had 90% life and where not damaged also toyota dealership couldn’t even tell me it was front or rear orators that were warped, nor tell me the wear ratio."

Travis T., CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Good acceleration and easy to handle. Pleasure to drive."

Curtis J., MS (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Handles well even when towing and in bad weather. 4WD is a must for ice and snow as well as loading and unloading my boat in the water."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 4runner drives and handles very well EXCEPT in high winds. It has good acceleration and corners well. The steering is very tight which is good during normal driving but I think it factors in to poor handling in high winds."

Richy M., OK (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"acceleration and handling are good on secondary and city roads"

R P., CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"My 2002 4Runner averaged >20 mph (except when it was cold) up until it reached about ten years old. My 2016 4Runner averages 20 mph only because of the times I travel long distances (I always track my mileage and keep it in a spreadsheet). For driving around the area where I live, it averages 19+. For long distances, my 02 could get up to 22 or 23 mph. My last trip in my 16 got up to 22 and before that, 21. (Doesn't the law say that gas mileage must be improved?) If I put my cruise control on 55 mph, my 02 would go 55, whether going uphill, downhill or on flat terrain. My 16 acts like my 1994 4Runner: when going uphill it zooms up to as much as 5 mph over what it's set too. When going downhill, it maybe speeds up to 3 mph or so. One of the Toyota mechanics I spoke to said it had to do with a different system being used for cruise control (electric, I believe he said). I miss my 02."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The engine often sounds like it's struggling very hard to "get going." It runs OK, but It doesn't sound very smooth. Controls. Knob controls are much safer to use than touch. Easier to reach and manipulate"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The lumbar provision is inadequate. I cannot get enough lumbar provision to support my back for long trips."

Mike H., TX (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Doesn’t have the get up and go my highlander had. Other than that it’s great"

Anonymous, MT (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Good size vehicle, with good acceleration. Have to keep your hands on the wheel at all times."

Robert S., MS (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Unless front end was just aligned the steering seems to wander."

John E., AZ (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Accelerating while passing could be better - not smooth enough."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"It handles like a truck. Which is good. It's actually much smoother on bad roads than a truck...IT'S NOT AN SUV IT'S A TRUCK."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Most unrefined car I have driven. It rides very rough over bumps, steering is vague, body roll is excessive and brakes are terrible. Every time I have to stop with any urgency, the ABS kicks in and the car does a nose dive. I realize it’s a body on frame SUV, but my 1998 Ford Expedition is too and doesn’t have any of these flaws."

Wesley B., CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Acceleration is okay but vehicle is certainly not 'quick' on pick up; it seems to struggle a bit. that seems to be typical of such vehicles..."

Frank H., SC (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 4Runner has been great for what we expected. While it drives like a truck, you are sitting up high, giving you a very confident drive. It ha handled snow and bad weather with ease. Has also been great on long road trips."

John M., PA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Good smooth acceleration, noisy when you really gun the engine. Could use a bit more power but overall very good."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"4Runner handles great, it's reliable and predictive at every move. It's not a sports car like Ferrari, so don't expect same handling and acceleration, but it drives better then many other 4x4 and crossovers. As a driver you can be sure that you can get to your destination no ma/we what weather and road conditions are. It also great and stable in the corners even for it's size and frame construction. Many competitive frame base vehicles and even crossovers do not give you that level of confedence 4Runner does."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"A little lackluster acceleration Great handling"

Robert F., CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very unsettled ride for a luxury SUV."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"this vehicle is very underpowered. I should have taken one for a longer test drive. Had I known how underpowered it is I would not have purchased it."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very impressed with the suspension. Handles well both on highway and on rough back roads."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Does not handle well in windy conditions at highway speeds."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"hard to get going sometimes, accelerations. VERY wide turning circle. LOVE riding so high, smooth over ruts."

DENISE L., WA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Comfort and isolation from road noise and surface. The poor lumbar adjuster is unacceptable."

IVAN U., FL (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Drives like a truck not a car."

ALLEN S., WA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Not enough horsepower for the weight of the vehicle"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"disappointing that the fuel mileage has not improved any over my previous 4runner(2005)"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Even though a 6cyl, The acceleration is geared down to achieve fuel economy to the extent it lacks responsiveness. To go up slight hills you have to cause it drop into lower gear because it set up to run in the highest gear possible for fuel economy."

Anonymous, GA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Purchased for off road travels, it is amazing for that purpose...last body on frame mid sized SUV, love it for getting to hunting sites and backwoods camping"

JOHN T., MN (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Love the way it handles on 2 way highways. You sit high enough you can see out. Has enough windows that you don't have blind spots when pulling out or backing."

NANCY B., WV (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"It does not have a lot of punch; seems a bit slow to accelerate quickly. Once up to speed, it's great."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Where this vehicle shines is in off road handling, but the trade off is that on road handling belies its truck based roots. Compared with my previous car, an 03 Infinity G-35 it feels ponderous in the turns, and the transmission is reluctant to downshift, but one has to accept that it has absolutely no sports car pretensions."

MARK H., CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Acceleration is adequate but not as fast as previous 4Runners that I have owned."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Love the manual option in gearing especially on slick - ice road"

IZTOK P., BC (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"heated and cooled seats"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The ride and drive are really good for the body on frame SUV. Toyota still has the 4RUNNER extremely underpowered. By a large margin, this vehicle is the slowest I’ve owned since the horrible 80’s vehicles lumbered down the roads. With relatively bad fuel economy, there is no redeeming factor to Toyota having such an underpowered vehicle."

Brent N., IN (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"This SUV's ride has improved dramatically since our earlier 2005 4Runner. The ride is smoother and more refined even though it is on a truck frame."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"great"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Passenger seat rattles when no one sits in it. Has done this from day one. Dealer didn’t fix it when I advised them about it during a routine maintenance service. Very disappointed in the interior build quality."

Wesley B., CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seat is somewhat uncomfortable on long trips. There is much more cabin road noise than what I expected."

Richy M., OK (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Road noise is high in the back seats. Front driver and passenger seats are wearing quickly on the side where you get in and out. Overall, the 4Runner rides high and smooth."

Matthew W., OK (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Noisy, seats are not very comfortable. Can be very bouncy on paved roads."

Travis T., CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great, quiet ride. Seating very comfortable,Great visability."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great comfortable seats and a firm truck like ride on or off road Noise of high rev at idle a little off putting"

Robert F., CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats are reasonably comfortable, but engine noise in car is obtrusive."

Anonymous, KS (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Comfortable seats, softer ride than previous vehicle(Tacoma)"

Mark D., IL (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"We can ride in this vehicle all day long. Super ride, quiet and comfortable."

Robert S., NY (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Comfort is good, seats fit well. Ride is a little rough for me. The v6 is noisy and under powered."

Robert L., NE (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats feel a little stiff - could be more comfortable."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"a very slight wind noise at the left of the driver"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats are comfortable compared to the previous generation 4runner. the seat heat works much better than the cooling side. Additionally, the activation knob has to be manually turned off or it will turn back on every time the car is running. Rather noisy and ride is that of an off road designed SUV so I expected that."

Steve H., VA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very quiet and comfortable for long hours of continuous driving"

Allan C., NV (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"A little to stiff on the ride. Step bar is to high, awkward to get int and out."

Dennis B., TX (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Quiet, smooth, comfortable ride. easy to steer."

Curtis J., MS (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Not a good steady ride at Intestate speeds. Required constant correction to remain on proper lane"

R P., CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"I like the leather seats. They are quite comfortable."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"For a larger, off-road capable vehicle, the ride is smooth and very forgiving of bad roads. Interior is very quiet with big, comfortable seats"

Michelle G., MI (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Ride is surprisingly good for an accomplished off road vehicle. Ride is tall, with all that entails, , but much quieter than our Honda Pilir"

Keith G., OK (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The high, flat seat is very comfortable - only wish there were memory settings. Internal noise is relatively quiet. Ride is a little bumpy but better than most trucks. Vehicle feels very solid."

Paul B., CA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 4 Runner is moderately comfortable. Its quite and solid. The audio control knobs are great. Entune is useless and voice function is terrible. I just use manual controls to avoid frustration. I purchased for reliability and practicality."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats are uncomfortable for any extended period of time. Quite of bit of ride noise for a Toyota product."

Christopher P., WA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats are very comfortable and warms and cools when wanted."

Bobby H., SC (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"non adjustable passenger seat, compared to the drivers seat. Vehicle scoots on grooved pavement, kind of feels like piloting a boat at slow speed. The vehicle darts back and forth while not moving the steering wheel. Dealer said there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. It is very annoying at highway speeds."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats are comfortable - noise isn't a factor - the ride is good"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"I like the separate driver and passenger climate controls, including seat cooling / warming. One thing I notice is that the heated seats feature is more enjoyable than the cooling feature. The cool air that blows through the seats isn't really effective because your body blocks the airflow."

Anonymous, UT (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Driver seat has good motorized 6 way adjustments. Passenger side basic manual. Seats are comfortable for an suv but a little spongy for a 6’3‿ 270lb person, especially for long drives."

Chris W., AZ (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The car is very spacious and I love the softech seats. They do not get as hot as, nor as cold as, leather but look just as awesome! The ride is very plush on the road (not so much off road but I am guessing of rotates do not expect that)."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"I wish the front seats adjusted for tall people better. I want more head room"

Preston O., PA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Breaking is extremely fast. You have to be careful when breaking hard."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"For the money it should have dual climate control"

Anonymous, OR (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats are not as supportive as we would like for all day driving."

Anonymous, NE (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The driver seat its lumbar adjustment is very poor. The confor in general in the high way in great, v Surprasely very quiet and its suspension is good isolating the road unevenness."

IVAN U., FL (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"the climate control /air /heat/cool balance is hard to equalize Dials are hard to see in certain light, Im color blind so they need to be more contrasting, dials are old school"

Anonymous, NM (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Engine noise is obtrusive."

Anonymous, KS (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Vehicle needs more headroom. Occupants > 6 ft are cramped"

Anonymous, GA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"This vehicle is equivalent to a luxury vehicle in regard to comfort. Best car I've owned in this regard since my Acura TL."

RYAN A., OR (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Rougher ride than expected. Seats could be a bit more comfy. Not as comfortable on long trips as expected."

Anonymous, OK (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The limited trim level has a very much improved ride quality compared to the other trim levels."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The only thing that I wish that the vehicle had is automatic climate control instead of manual."

Anonymous, MS (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"We were looking for a vehicle that was easier to enter and exit. We had owned 3 other Toyota's, thus we looked at and brought the Rav 4."

Donald K., NY (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great ability and reliability compared to other direct competitors. Fit and finish quality is exactly what you expect from Toyota. No rattles / squeaks etc.. rides very solid."

Sean F., AL (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"underpowered, handles like a truck, very cramped, lots of noises and rattles"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Reliable vehicle can tow 5000 lbs"

Anonymous, MT (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"It's a great value for the vehicle. Real frame base vehicle with real 4x4 system and transfer case. This is very handy vehicle and challenging road conditions. Most new electronic AWD system used on modern cars are basically useless for anything else then dry pavement. Manufacturers should go back to good designs with reliable traction at every wheel."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great great value"

Steven W., VA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 4Runner holds its value very well and the vehicle feels brand new after 30k miles. We completed a road trip across the country over the summer and the 4Runner was ready for everything. Hard to find such a well built and capable vehicle for the same kind of mone."

Quentin B., WV (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"The vehicle is rock solid. I use premium gas and have not had any issues with acceleration. I feel the vehicle is durable and reliable. I feel the level of technology could be better. Entune feels on the old side and is a bit clunky compared to my smartphone. The level of tech feels light for the price especially compared to other similarly priced vehicles."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"I've owned 6 4Runners and at least 5 other Toyota/Lexus products and all hold their resale value and are extremely reliable vehicles."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Represents a lot of steel for the money. Includes [faux] leather, sunroof, 4WD, moon roof. Less than half the price of a Range Rover. Only wish they had available safety features like forward collision avoidance and lane change warning."

Paul B., CA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"One of the best sport utility vehicles for functional usage. You really do get what you pay for."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

Anonymous, ME (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Excellent price from dealer, unbelievable resale value if I ever get rid of it."

Bruce H., CO (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"I have owned approximately 75 vehicles (close to 60 new). This is the most screwed down tight quality built vehicle I have every purchased, including many Mercedes, Audis, etc. The only 2 vehicles that come close in quality are my 2005 Porsche and a previously owned Lexus."

Joseph S., OR (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"I believe Toyota products provide the best value in the marketplace regardless of model."

Christopher P., WA (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Resale value of my 4Runner is excellent."

B S., AL (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Good initial price and very low depreciation rate. Excellent reliability for price."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Third row seats are useless. In addition, having them negatively impacts use of rear storage, even when seats are folded down."

S P., NC (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Although not chap to purchase in our limited trim, great reliability combined with excellent resale value makes for a very low cost of ownsfership compared to even much less expensive vehicles"

Michelle G., MI (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Purchased through Costco at reduced price"

Anonymous, ME (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

"Toyota reliability, accomplished 4wd, bells and whistles for 37K, heck yes"

Keith G., OK (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

Anonymous, WI (2016 Toyota 4Runner)

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"I hate that I could not buy a 4Runner with a sun roof without buying running boards, heated leather seats and a roof rack. (I had them take the running boards off.) I wanted a sun roof and cloth seats. No running boards and no roof rack."
