A shining example of tranquil motoring, the Avalon can easily pass for a luxury car. Its cabin is vast and quiet. It also has a slick and muscular powertrain, with a six-speed automatic transmission. Despite the abundant horsepower, the Avalon gets very good fuel economy, but handling is uninspiring.

Warning lights

"Nearly all warning lights (except washer fluid level) suddenly came on last year. I am told this is some kind of computer sensor, which costs around $200, which we chose not to have replaced."

Anonymous, FL (2010 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"the rear brake light in the window is out. You must take out the back seat completely to get to it. The light itself costs less than $20. The labor to replace the light is over $250.Nearly impossible for a senior citizen like myself to fix at home. This light must be working in order to pass state inspection. Both things are ridiculous. If I did not have the light in the back window my car would pass but since it is included in this model I must get it fixed, Why would you put a light in and cover it with the back seat and require it to be working for a state inspection even if not needed."

Anonymous, TX (2010 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Not all the Multi CD player (6) slots work when you have CDs in them"

Charles Z., WA (2010 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"CD player became stuck and would neither play nor eject the CDs in it - it has a 6 CD capacity. After several frustrating attempts to at least retrieve the captured CDs that was accomplished but the player is now completely nonfunctional"

Anonymous, VA (2010 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The multi-disk CD player ceased to function properly. It would not accept new disks or release disks previously installed. I finally was able to expel the previously installed disks and have not used the CD player since."

Anonymous, VA (2010 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The 2010 nav system requires using a clunky multifunction mechanical pushbutton to select entries. it has never worked easily, and after 8 years it often doesn't register when pushed. It is the one really poor design in an otherwise first rate vehicle."

Thomas M., CA (2010 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Lousy control panel design that can accumulate dirt causing erratic curser control. Replaced twice. Toyota does not want to pay for the third replacement. The overall use interface is clunky."

"System at times does not respond to input, or responds improperly"

Anonymous, VA (2010 Toyota Avalon XLS 3.5-L V6)

"difficult to read from the beginning. after five years it stopped working. it wasn't worth the cost to have it replaced. I bought a Garmin"

Anonymous, IL (2010 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"After they did a recall service to replace the dashboard, The GPS failed to operate correctly. A Toyota specialist finally diagnosed and found the problem (a loosened wire connector) but it took over 4 months to get it corrected. Still - they didn't charge me - a plus for them"

Joel C., FL (2010 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Whenever the car is started there is a warning message not to use the gps while the vehicle is in motion. The rotary knob that is used to highlight information on the navigation screen and is then pressed to select it would randomly stop working. The problem is that the radio and air conditioning data are also displayed on the navigation screen. If the knob stops working then the air conditioning and radio cannot be used either. The car was bought certified pre-owned and the warranty covered the repair. Both the control unit and the screen were replaced; the estimated cost would have been $1200."

Anonymous, GA (2010 Toyota Avalon XLS 3.5-L V6)

"The system is useless. It is not touch screen and very difficult to operate. I bought an aftermarket Garmin for $150 that was much better and more reliable"

Anonymous, VA (2010 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Has never been completely reliable. It can suddenly change your position to another city or even another state. You have to get to a know location and recalibrate. I now use my smartphone for GPS over the car. It is reliable and has voice instruction"

Francesco B., NC (2010 Toyota Avalon Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The Navigation Control System (inverted mouse) has been replaced twice. Contacts wear out requiring many attempts to get the 'cursor' to move up/down/left/right. Expensive to replace"

Anonymous, VA (2010 Toyota Avalon XLS 3.5-L V6)

"Very cumbersome. Does not work well, waste of money when you can get much better navigation on your cell phone"

THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY BECOME HARD TO DEPRESS, SLOW TO RETURN TO IDLE, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Summary:
TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 AVALON, MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 CAMRY, MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 COROLLA, COROLLA MATRIX, RAV4, MODEL YEAR 2010 HIGHLANDER, MODEL YEAR 2008-2010 SEQUOIA, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 TUNDRA VEHICLES. DUE TO THE MANNER IN WHICH THE FRICTION LEVER INTERACTS WITH THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL INSIDE THE PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY, THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE LEVER MAY BECOME SMOOTH DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. IN THIS CONDITION, IF CONDENSATION OCCURS ON THE SURFACE, AS MAY OCCUR FROM HEATER OPERATION (WITHOUT A/C) WHEN THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY IS COLD, THE FRICTION WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS OPERATED MAY INCREASE, WHICH MAY RESULT IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECOMING HARDER TO DEPRESS, SLOWER TO RETURN, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION.
What should you do:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REINFORCEMENT BAR IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHICH WILL ALLOW THE PEDAL TO OPERATE SMOOTHLY. GM WILL NOTIFY OWNERS FOR THE PONTIAC VIBE PLEASE SEE 10V-018. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2010 AND WILL BE COMPLETED ON MARCH 15, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
Summary:
TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.
What should you do:
TOYOTA FILED AN AMENDED DEFECT REPORT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009, STATING THAT DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND, ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALTER THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR SURFACE UNDER THE PEDAL. THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. TOYOTA WILL BEGIN MAILING LETTERS TO OWNERS ON DECEMBER 31, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331, LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.
