Roomy inside without feeling large outside, the Toyota Corolla is also impressively quiet. Corolla also has excellent fuel economy, while still posting good acceleration times, handling competently and providing a comfortable ride. The one drawback -- some of our drivers were not comfortable with the driving position. Overall, though, the Corolla is a fine choice.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Accelerated well bit feels too high off the ground around turns. Swings a bit."

Anonymous, CA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Acceleration is good when I need to increase speed when merging into traffic."

Neil H., AB (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Acceleration isn't good and it is not bad. Just a small 4 cyclinder engine. For jack rabbit starts I noticed the front tires do not spin, they skip, causing the car to vibrate.. For wet and snow covered roads, it does the same thing, tires skip."

Anonymous, IL (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"ease of driving and power when needed"

Anonymous, KS (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"great"

Claude J., NC (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Manual transmission, the car is fun to drive. Zippy enough for a small engine although it is not fast off the starting line."

Anonymous, IL (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"It is not a race car. The car is easy to drive, it accelerates at a good pace. It is however noisy on the road"

Anonymous, ID (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"i am most impressed with the comfort and quality of my 10 year old car"

Nancy M., MN (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Acceleration is ok. I would prefer better acceleration for traffic situations like passing"

Christopher B., GA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Very poor example of the automotive art."

Fred R., WI (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"There is a delay in response when I accelerate from a stop or accelerate to speed up in traffic that is new and I can't figure out why this is happening."

Anonymous, CA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"It handles well and is responsive in accelerating and braking. Acceleration is comfortable. Brakes have locked up and tires skid with an inattentive and "new to driving this car" driver behind the wheel. I find a certain comfort in having to handroll windows up and down. Standard radio has exceptionally poor reception that I rarely use it. I don't mess with it unless I'm at a stop or stopped. I don't use the CD function, too distracting. It has been very reliable to date."

Gloria P., CA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Handles very well and feels quite sporty. Recommend the use of snow tires in the winter."

Tom H., ON (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Great pick up speed, acceleration"

Anonymous, PA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"It starts & it drives, what more is there!"

Anonymous, HI (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Handles well. The acceleration is surprisingly good for such a reasonably-priced car."

Anonymous, CA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Very noisy, not a smooth ride. Great for short trips, but tiring on long drives."

Homer B., VA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"This car is a pleasure to drive. It's not a sports car but it has very good accelerating and handles extremely well."

Anonymous, NC (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Very peppy acceleration that has not left us wanting on the highway. Easy and comforting handling; no surprises. We use this as our road trip vehicle and have been quite happy with the ride on those longer trips."

Matthew C., WA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Highway driving_ usually drive 115kph. I feel very safe and in full control. Great acceleration when I need it e.g., passing other cars on the road. Steering very responsive in both city and highway driving. Same with acceleration, good in both situations."

Anonymous, NB (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"It has a 5 speed standard shift that is still nimble, it handles well on curves."

Anonymous, NC (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"dependability"

Anonymous, NY (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"With the factory tires, the handling was not very precise in cross-winds; with wider Michelin tires, that issue is gone and handling can now be quite fun."

Gary L., BC (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"This manual transmission vehicle is still fun to drive after a decade. Responsive, simple, and highly efficient, it makes me feel bad for BMW owners who paid three times the price for the same level of sporty driving."

Samuel B., VA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Exactly what you would expect"

Anonymous, CA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Extremely dependable, handles well"

Bruce K., BC (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"IN TOWN ACCELERATION AND HANDLING EXCELLENT"

Anonymous, ON (2006 Toyota Corolla)

Anonymous, MD (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"acceleration good."

Anonymous, VA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"its just a good all around car"

Anonymous, IN (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"with the manual stick shift the car is very peppy and handles great."

Frederick W., FL (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Reverse has always been annoying in this car. It requires more than a light touch to get the car to move backwards when parking. That makes it harder to control in reverse."

Anonymous, NY (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Vehicle is fun to drive tight turns, great handling. OK acceleration. But great for tight turns and round abouts."

Anonymous, MB (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"bad road traction"

DAVID S., RI (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Handles great and accelerates great."

DAWN K., IN (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Doesn't climb hills (mountain passes)very well"

DAVID L., NM (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Often on the highway the car vibrates at 50+ mph."

Anonymous, MA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"good reliable car"

GREG S., NE (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Highway handling in my opinion is more difficult than it should be."

Anonymous, WI (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Accleration is good handling is good. However their is rough idle and car briefly hesitates when pressing the gas. Like it wants to quit running. Hard to start at times."

Anonymous, AL (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"I drive very conservatively (which is why my MPG is quite good). If I had to push this car, I would not be as satisfied, because the acceleration would not be great."

DAVID B., NC (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"The handling is very good in a neutral way, meaning that it is easy to drive."

Anonymous, WA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Handling stinks compared to our 1993 Saturn. Acceleration is modest at best."

Anonymous, NC (2006 Toyota Corolla)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"cannot beat this car for value and reliability"

Robert R., NY (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"The seats are not comfortable. Not good for long rides. Like being cramp on an airplane. Not too much room to get comfy. The ride is stiff. Hard on the legs and lower back. Noise not a factor."

Anonymous, IL (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"I would like the seats to be adjustable for height. The noise level in the vehicle is very loud."

Anonymous, NH (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Ok for local driving but for a tall person (I'm 6') seats are not comfortable for trips over an hour. Cabin noise drowns out the radio at speeds over 45mph on smooth pave. Ride is unsettled and the car understeers in turns."

Anonymous, NC (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"The faster I drive, the more ambient noise in the car. This makes calls using the smartphone's speaker more difficult."

Anonymous, CA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Noise from windows"

Anonymous, NV (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"The seats are reasonably comfortable. I recently drove for 5 hours in a row without needing to stop due to discomfort."

Scott P., MN (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"noise"

Frank K., OH (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Same comment about the headrests."

Anonymous, CA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"I'm comfortable as a driver, good lumbar support, easy to adjust seat for driving comfort and safety i.e. visibility. Passenger seating seems fine, good reclining position. A negative is the middle console is not long enough to comfortably rest my right arm, elbow. Ride seems fine and I don't have a problem w/ noise."

Anonymous, NB (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Comfortable seats. Nice ride. Noisy - but I've had it almost 13 years."

Bruce C., MI (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"I have an issue with painful sciatica. I find the driver and front passenger seats comfortable for long drives. The passenger seat has comfortable legroom while the drivers seat does not. I am comfortable with the nominal noise levels outside the car. The ride is comfortable and relatively quiet."

Gloria P., CA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Relatively high road noise level."

Anonymous, CA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"I LIKE EVERYTHING ABOUT MY TOYOTA"

Nancy M., MN (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Excellent quality interior on the LE model. The faux wood is pleasing to the eye and the layout of controls is excellent. Seats are comfortable. We use it as our road trip car on vacations, with two in front and one in back. Very good size trunk for the class."

Matthew C., WA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"It is comfortable, nothing irritating"

Anonymous, HI (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Great city car, compact yet spacious"

Bruce K., BC (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Seats are not very comfortable but considering the car has over 200,000 miles, can't complain"

Sharon J., ME (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"A bit tight for a taller adult to get into the seat. Not a very quiet ride."

Walter W., CA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"seats somewhat uncomfortable. road noise load. ride bad"

Anonymous, VA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"This is a great value for the money, but the road noise and seat comfort leave something to be desired."

Anonymous, TN (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Love my Corolla, but it's been difficult to have a rear-facing convertible car seat in the back - an adult passenger can't ride in front because of lack of space."

Anonymous, OH (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"For a small car; the seats are comfortable, the noise is limited and acceptable and the ride is better than expected."

M S., IL (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"they just do not fit my back"

Anonymous, OR (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"It has been a carefree car for over 10 years. OK, so it missing all the bells and whistles of a new car, but its dependable, cheap and the third Toyota Carolla we've owned."

Donna R., FL (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"road and wind noise somewhat harsh ride"

Anonymous, MN (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Corolla is a very reliable, low cost car. Everything works as it should... Very few repairs ... Better seats would be appreciated."

"AC leaks interior"

"EXCELLENT air conditioning! You get very cold air, very fast!"

JEFF J., ON (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"This car has over 200000 miles to date . It has been checked repeatedly by mechanics who have found NO issues front to back. I change fluids regularly and repair quickly anything that could or does need replacement."

COLLEEN C., CO (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"The ride is only fair as you feel more bumps and vibrations from the road."

JACKSON B., GA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"In the last few days the AC failed when I was driving to and from VT-PHL. The car interior registered 103 and was extremely uncomfortable. This is the only thing that has gone wrong in ten years!!"

Anonymous, PA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"You feel every bump that you drive over."

Anonymous, PA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Seats uncomfortable on long trips. Cabin noise at highway speeds make hearing the radio nearly impossible. Minor items on dashboard (clock and control illumination) failed but I at least was able to repair the clock (bad solder joints -- a manufacturing defect). I suspect the failure of dash control illumination is also due to poor soldering. Climate control is OK but A/C has never been able to keep up with very high temps. The ride is not well-controlled over rough pavement or expansion joints"

Anonymous, NC (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"seats, climate control, ride, are all average, road noise is above average."

Anonymous, SK (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Seats could have used more back support Admits a little too much noise (Wind, road) Neither is major"

STEVE-JEANNE F., NY (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"I find the cabin noisy-difficult to hear music, etc."

ANNE M., NS (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Car is not as refined as Camry - ride is stiff and bumpy, noisier. But it's an incredibly reliable econobox."

D A., WA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"I am the primary driver. Getting in and out of this car is a problem for both of us. My husband is 85, and I am 81. This car would be better for a younger small family. It is very noisy, so radio, and conversation is very hard to hear, we are both hard of hearing."

MARCIA D., CA (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"I am over 6 feet tall and find the reach to the steering wheel is uncomfortable. Either I have to sit too close to reach the steering wheel and my legs are a bit cramped, or I sit back and have quite a reach."

DAVID B., NC (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Seats are very uncomfortable .... Ride is a bit noisy and bumpy"

Anonymous, MI (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"Mostly good but have to admit that I drove a friend's Buick Regal and it was a bit more comfortable. Mine isn't bad; hers is just a bit better."

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"This car is fantastic! I've been driving it for 12 years with few problems. I get about 300 miles of mostly city driving from each tank of gas. Aside from regular maintenance it's needed very few service calls over the years. If I had to do it all over again I'd definitely buy the same car."

Anonymous, NC (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"My Corolla has been a solid, reliable car since I bought it new in 2006. Other than routine maintenance, it has not required any mechanical repairs. Its gas mileage is excellent. I routinely average 30+ mpg, and on highway trips during the summer, it's close to 40 mpg."

Scott P., MN (2006 Toyota Corolla)

"For a cheap car, this one can't be beat. Little maintenance, good gas mileage, good interior styling...no trouble at all."

"fuel economy and low maintenance cost such as oil changes"

I've replaced the battery and the tires once each but even not driving it much I would have expected more problems than I've had over the course of a decade.
