Roomy inside without feeling large outside, the Toyota Corolla is also impressively quiet. Corolla also has excellent fuel economy, while still posting good acceleration times, handling competently and providing a comfortable ride. The one drawback -- some of our drivers were not comfortable with the driving position. Overall, though, the Corolla is a fine choice.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"For a small car with a relatively small engine, it handles average terrain very well and hills in Eastern mountain states impressively well with a bit of down shifting on extreme grades."

Glenn L., IA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"This is a 5 speed manual and the shifting is tight and finicky especially in the lower gears. Driving this car makes you feel like you are a professional driver for being able to shift smoothly since it seems make it as difficult as possible. We would like to teach our daughter to drive manual transmission, but this car would be too much of a challenge to learn on."

Anonymous, ON (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Very good acceleration and handling."

Kenneth I., WA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Nothing special. It gets the job done each and every mile."

Anonymous, CO (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Same as before. A smaller car built at a certain price point and it exceeds with that in mind"

Anonymous, VA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Well built solid car that handles well and accelerates beautifully for being a smaller vehicle."

Anonymous, ON (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Good is its reliability. Steady as she goes. Not as good is the smoothness when increasing speed. It is just a speck clunky, not smooth. Acceleration is adequate but have driven cars with quicker acceleration."

Anonymous, FL (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Acceleration is not what I expected for the Corolla. The four cylinder is acceptable and gets great mileage. The 6 cylinder sedans have greater power for passing on one lane roads."

Chris K., CA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Handles very predictably."

Anonymous, MN (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"It drives fine with easy handling and plenty of acceleration when needed."

Denise D., VA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"It is steady but not exceptional.good transportation."

Steve M., OH (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Slow acceleration especially going uphill and with the air conditioning on"

Anonymous, IN (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"The car has excellant acceleration for when I need to pass someone or need/want to go fast on the highway. It handles very well and I always feel in control."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Bad design of brake petal and acclerator."

Anonymous, NC (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"The conford ride"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Drives well and has very good acceleration"

Anonymous, ON (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Excellent excelleration."

STEPHEN T., TX (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"car is easily pushed around in relativey light gusty winds, requiring constant steering correction; car can feel disconcertingly unstable when making quick lane changes in passing situations; but I have adjusted to both. But manual transmission allows strong acceleration when desired, making car more FUN to drive."

D Y., NY (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Still gets good gas mileage even with 186000 miles on it."

Anonymous, MO (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"A strut broke resulting in vibrations. Also, uneven tire wear."

JOEL B., NJ (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"I drive with hand controls. At start, it s very challenging to avoid spinning the wheels."

LAWRENCE E., OR (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Seems peppy enough for me, even after 8 years. Gas mileage is great: high 30s to 40."

R D., OR (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"The acceleration in first gear (it's an automatic) is a bit abrupt."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"CVT is a little strange but efficient - sometimes it shifts too far down when accelerating. It seems to work well and even down shifts when going down a long hill."

Anonymous, OH (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"great acceleration, has a manual transmission which is very responsive. I am happy with the handling, but in the winter you need to drive with a little extra care. front wheel drive only on this car."

Anonymous, ON (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Daughter was push off the highway at 75 mph; rolled over in the car 3 times and walked away with only a mild concussion and bruises. Not sure why the air bags did not go off?"

Anonymous, IL (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"I love the way it accelerates and drives."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Corolla)

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"accelerates OK, don't like other handling, just average handling"

Anonymous, WA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Road noise is excessive"

Anonymous, IN (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Seats are good for small people. Noise is not good. Ride is slow but cannot expect more from a Corolla."

Anonymous, QC (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Difficult to adjust the driver seat & somewhat noisy but I do enjoy the manual steering"

Kitty H., FL (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Fairly comfortable seats, relatively quiet ride."

Anonymous, ON (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Not quite as good in terms of maneuverability as my previous Camry"

Anonymous, VA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Comfortable, but noisy and vibrates at high speeds on the highway."

Richard S., MA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"This has been a comfortable and reliable ride for ten years of traveling. Listened to books on tape on long rides and fully enjoyed and continue to like this vehicle."

Denise D., VA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Brake and accelerator are too close to each other and same height position causing a close collision."

Anonymous, NC (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"As a economical car, it performs in this area fine. Not built like a luxury car and as long as that is understood you get a good ride"

Anonymous, VA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"For an inexpensive vehicle, it is very good in the seating and ride, although the wind noise could use improvement. I recently had to make a number of 2600 mile round trips, and I never felt discomforted by the vehicle."

Glenn L., IA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Front seating has adequate legroom and space. Rear seats can use additional legroom for adults."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Great for road trips with a small family."

Savannah B., AL (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"I often find I have back issues once I sit in the front passenger side of this car. I does not have enough leg room especially for the right leg even with the seat all the way back. The car is noisy and lets you experience EVERY bump to it's fullest - even ones that didn't look like bumps in the road."

Anonymous, ON (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Seats are very comfortable. Outside noise reduction could be better."

Anonymous, ON (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"I'm 6'1", and always feel cramped in the driver's seat, even when adjusted all the way back."

Anonymous, ON (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Driver seats could provide more lumbar support without having to buy the big expensive kit. Serious problem among almost all car manifacturer."

"very reliable"

Anonymous, ON (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Not comfortable for a 6 foot tall man"

Anonymous, IN (2008 Toyota Corolla)

PETER S., WA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Car has road noise."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"The rattles and shakes from this car are so annoying. I constantly hear rattles and shakes every time I drive it."

DANIEL J., OH (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"After driving a 1969 VW for several years, going into the Corolla was like a luxury car. Everything was good: heater, AC, comfort, room, and especially gas mileage. The Corolla gets in high 30s always and 40 on any kiind of road trip."

R D., OR (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"just an overall comfortable & relaible car"

Anonymous, NJ (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Driver's seat very comfortable. Can adjust lumbar support."

What Owners Say

"Very dependable little beater. Got what we expected.not luxurious but decent ride.acceleraotion could be better."

Steve M., OH (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"very reliable vehicle, good gas mileage, good value for what we paid."

Bobby D., CA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Excellent!"

Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"I have had this car for 10 years and, while I admit that I do not drive it a lot, it has never given me any trouble. The only expenses I've been required to pay have been for regular maintenance."

Dee O., NY (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Reliability of car for the money spent on it"

Anonymous, VA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"The 2008 Corolla has held up well since I bought it in 2007. Just regular maintenance. The car gets great gas mileage. On long trips, the gas mileage I have experienced is around 37 mpg. I am hoping the car will last another 10 years. Owners of newer Corollas that I know have been experiencing problems with all the additional computer controlled items in the cars. In Arizona, the sun and heat really take their toll on electronics in cars, let alone the paint and interior. Mine has held up well. I am pleased with my 2008 Corolla."

David B., AZ (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"This car is bullet proof. Nothing goes wrong with it."

Anonymous, CO (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Excellent reliability. Other than changing the spark plugs at 90,000 miles and water pump at 95,000 miles, only fluid, filter changes for maintenance."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Reliable"

Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"We got this car at a reasonable price, but my late husband thought the dealer agreed to our bid too quickly. We used Consumer Reports guidelines when buying the car. We bought it in July 2007"

Nancy R., NH (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"I get over the estimated mileage with a mixture of city and highway driving."

Anonymous, NM (2008 Toyota Corolla)

Anonymous, MN (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"For the price I paid, my Corolla is an outstanding vehicle."

Randy C., SC (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"It had a serious problem with the engine just stopping until the dealer replaced or reprogrammed the computer. That was in the 1st year of ownership but it has been great since."

Kenneth I., WA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"The Corolla is one of Toyota's Bread and Butter products for over 50 years. Fantastic value and extremely dependable. Just keep the regular maintenance for vehicle and change tires regularly."

Chris K., CA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Car was priced well for a college student and has lasted for a decade with routine maintenance."

Jonathan B., MO (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Extremely reliable"

Judith C., MA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"After 10 years and 200000 miles the Corolla still looks great, drives well, and runs great. I have most service done at a dealership and have been happy with that. Looking forward to at least another 50000 to 100000 miles!"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Priced right."

Jack S., TN (2008 Toyota Corolla)

Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Runs well, good mileage. I change oil and filters myself. The first visit to a mechanic was at 126000 miles."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Owned for 10 years and has not needed any service to speak of."

Robert S., NC (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"Besides normal wear (the car is 10 years old!), this car looks, drives, and runs like a champ. The car cost approximately $15,000 10 years ago, and while I have spent money on maintenance items (brakes, tires, detailing, oil changes, headlights and wipers, etc.), to the best of my recollection, I have spent $0 on actual repairs, because nothing has broken down. I don't know how you get a better value than that. "5 stars, would buy again.""

Lisa B., IL (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"top notch"

Anonymous, ON (2008 Toyota Corolla)

"I regret not spending the extra money and getting auto lock, window, transmission. next purchase may also factor in outside noise"

"It is an excellent car. The fold down rear seats are useful."

STEPHEN T., TX (2008 Toyota Corolla)

Steve M., OH (2008 Toyota Corolla)
