Combining the practicality and frugal fuel economy compact-sedan buyers want with more interior room, upgraded amenities, and a sorely needed shot of style, this generation Corolla is a reasonable alternative to a midsized sedan. Slightly larger than the outgoing model, Corolla has a surprisingly spacious rear seat with ample leg room. Despite the bump in size, the car remains small enough for easy maneuvering and parking.

Mark R., MD (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The dash rattles at times but not always. For this price car though it is not unexpected"

Anonymous, GA (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"There is a rattle in the right side of the dash when we turn on the heater. Once the vehicle warms up, the noise stops."

Randall F., CA (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The b-pillar rattles a lot whenever the temperature is over 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and the dealership was unable to fix it two years ago. I've accepted the problem at this point."

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"There is a creaking noise in the right center pillar. We're being told it's the result of a failed weld in the uni-body. Dealer is telling us it's not covered under warranty. The creaking noise is distracting and really loud for a passenger. I'm mostly concerned about unibody failing or maybe the seat belt mount failing."

Derek G., VT (2015 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Mark R., MD (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Over time squeaks and rattles have become evident and more pronounced, esp. from the dash. This appears to be a very common complaint."

Peter B., TN (2015 Toyota Corolla LE Eco 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The S model comes with very low profile tires on large wheels. The ride is extremely rough. The car makes tons of squeaks and rattles, seemingly worse all the time."

Alex W., CA (2015 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Wind noise

"both front doors exhibit excessive/annoying wind noise starting at about 45 mph and increases as speed increases. Dealer diagnosed mirror design and as no TSB exists could not make any adjustment nor repair"

Peter B., TN (2015 Toyota Corolla LE Eco 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Even with windows firmly closed, I still hear a noise as if they were not fully closed"

Anonymous, MD (2015 Toyota Corolla LE Eco 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Road noise at curing speed makes listing to audio difficult."

Anonymous, ON (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Since day one excessive wind noise at 40mph plus speed. Dealership cited mirror design and stated nothing could be done to lessen the wind noise."

Peter B., TN (2015 Toyota Corolla LE Eco 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"It just quit working"

Anonymous, NE (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"If the sun shines on the rear of the car you can barely see anything on the screen. They should incorporate something like the vw's their emblem flips when the car in put in reverse, so the emblem shades the camera. Kudos for VW Handling Corolla in town if excellent. Highway driving not so good. had alignment checked ok but seems to wonder a lot so you are constantly correcting the steering. Not impressed."

Anonymous, NB (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"There was a software glitch and the repair people at a licensed toyota dealership did not know they were supposed to install a software update"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The radio touch screen seemed to be out of calibration. Online research showed this was a known problem. We purchased the car through our mechanic/broker with 39,000 miles on it. Even though it was out of warranty, our local Toyota dealer fixed it for us at no charge since it was our third Toyota."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Built-in music on iPhone blares when directions such as Waze are used and when changes such as volume are made."

Carol M., IL (2015 Toyota Corolla 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Often can't locate legitimate address"

Anonymous, LA (2015 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"It is inconsistent--I never know what's going to work. One day, Bluetooth works so I can play music from my iPhone, next day it doesn't. Phone calls work through the car, though doesn't always understand what I'm saying"

Anonymous, WI (2015 Toyota Corolla LE Plus 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"When using directions such as Waze it’s impossible to also use the radio. Dealership had no idea how to fix this and there is no online support for this Entune system. IPhone has built-in music that blares when connecting directions and when making a change, such as volume."

Carol M., IL (2015 Toyota Corolla 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, GU (2015 Toyota Corolla 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Both front door speakers started cutting out and then stopped completely. I replaced the in-door wiring between the tweeter and the mid range speaker which solved the problem"

David B., OH (2015 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Front speakers work then stop working - seems to be related to a wiring issue."

Anonymous, ON (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Speakers drop in and out. It is coming to the point where it is out most of the time. We've talked with one other person and they are having the same problem."

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"Trim below front driver side window flew off and was lost Passenger side plastic trim has fallen off three times and is now cracked. Dealer's response was simply, "well, that happens". Roof - 2 black rubber strips across both sides have peeled off and had to have garage re-glue them"

Anonymous, QC (2015 Toyota Corolla LE Eco 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Section of the rubber gasket on windshield popped out. It was an easy fix. They re-glued it into place"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Corolla LE Plus 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Paint on door fading paint peeling on quarter panel"

Keith G., FL (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"In the past 12 months around the trunk the paint just started peeling and chipping off. Took it into be repaired as it was still under warranty and it was repaired. Now in the last month I noticed. More paint peeling and chipping on the other side of the trunk. Have not had a chance to have it repaired. Not happy that a 2015 car would have paint peeling."

Chris E., TX (2015 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"From the very beginning, there have been paint chips and paint loss around all of the bordersof the car, such as door handles, bottoms or tops of doors, and a bit on the trunk and hood. It does not affect driving of the car, but it is very annoying, especially because this detracts from the blue crush color. This should not be happening for a 3 year old car!"

Anonymous, TN (2015 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The top of the hood seems really prone to chipping. Doesn't seem like the paint is very solid."

Derek G., VT (2015 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Norton P., ON (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"It was covered by the warranty, but I was shocked to have transmission issues with a fairly new Corolla"

Matt B., CA (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Closed solenoid in the transmission causing excess pressure in the transmission. Toyota replaced and got free loaner car while reoairing"

Randy M., TN (2015 Toyota Corolla LE Eco 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The car would slip in and out of gear with no warning, red-lining the engine and delivering a serious lurching experience. Initially it only did it when the car was cold, but eventually, it happened even when the car was warm; this degradation took several weeks. Initially, there was no check engine light, but as the transmission continued to deteriorate, the check engine light finally came on. Prior to the check engine light, I took the car to two different shops (neither was a dealer), both of whom said that without an engine code: there is nothing we can do. They recommended continuing to drive the car until it broke more definitively (!!)... which did not make me happy (mechanics are too dependent on computers these days to do diagnostics for them; just my opinion). Drive it until it leaves you stranded somewhere, then if you live, give us a call?? REALLY?!! Sheesh. So many mechanics just seem so... helpless these days. Regardless, they finally got their wish and the car became not quite undrivable, but not pleasant to drive, either; a lot of lurching and red-lining going on. I took it to a dealer this time, only because of a theory that our mileage was still within the drivetrain warranty. They said we had an active recall on the transmission for a software fix (we had not been notified; the risk when you buy used cars). They applied it, and... of course, it fixed nothing for us. ~sigh~ At which point, since the car itself could not tell them what to do, they just said: we need to replace the transmission. Since it was covered by the warranty, I agreed to it. If it had not been, I would have been on the hunt for a transmission specialist who can do more than just read the car computer's self-diagnostic. I know real mechanics still exist out in the wild, and they can tell whether you need a $5000 transmission replacement, or a $150 speed sensor replacement (I've had that experience, too). Pfff. I was SHOCKED to have a low-mileage (<40,000 miles) Toyota, driven gently, lose a transmission. I was NOT shocked at the limited skills of the various services locations I used."

Gary L., TX (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Slipping transmission

"while on freeway, car lost all power and engine light started blinking on and off. currently in shop for repair"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Corolla LE Eco 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Toyota Corolla LE Eco 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Electrical failure

"The car battery failed to maintain a charge on multiple occasions in the past few months and had to be jump started. Very unusual for this to happen in a two year old car with less then 12,000 miles on it. We could no longer trust that the car would start. The dealer replaced the car battery under warranty at no cost to us"

Ellen B., NY (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Traction control

"When making a sharp turn to the right or left, If the road is wet, and if I turn too quickly, I lose control of the car for a moment. The car slides in the direction I turn. This happens in wet or dry climates. It worries me now. And I am cautious when I turn. I make sure I slow down more when I make a turn to a street. This is a big problem for me. The steering wheel loses control of the car for a moment. Then after a brief moment I gain control of the car again after making a sharp turn. I could have gotten into accidents because of this issue."

Omar A., TX (2015 Toyota Corolla L 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Power Equipment

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, alarm or security system

What Owners Say

"The car wasn't driven for seven months, but the engine was started monthly and the car backed out into the driveway with the engine left to run. After three months, the car would not start without a battery boost. At the end of seven months, the car was taken to the dealer and the battery was deemed defective. It was replaced under the warranty."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Electronic ignition

"At least twice a year the car will not start. Unable to figure the cause because computer can't detect problem unless its hooked up at time of problem. Since it happens so infrequently I can't leave at shop for 6 months hooked up to computer. Just hope it doesn't happen in an emergency situation"

In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended may increase the risk of injury.
Summary:
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. What should you do:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk beginning March 2, 2020. A second letter notifying owners of the remedy repair will be mailed between March 16, 2020 and June 27, 2020.
