The Toyota Highlander scores high for its refinement, quiet interior, ride comfort, power, fuel economy, and flexible and roomy second-row seat. It's one of our top-scoring three-row SUVs, but it is not without its drawbacks. The third-row seat is tight. And while the handling is secure, it's not very agile.

"When we accelerate to pass another car ir pulls to the left. Has done it ever since we bought the car."

"Oversteer/Low road feel makes for tiring drive. Almost dangerous under heavy acceleration with any turning maneuver-e.g., accelerating to change lanes or pass."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Overall the acceleration and handling are very good. However, it can be difficult to park and has a wide turning radius."

Anonymous, VA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"It drove much better after we replaced the tires"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"I find that I have to maintain constant steering wheel control, & road concentration or the vehicle will start to wander, It could be the tires the dealer put on the vehicle. I use better grade tires. Acceleration & braking are outstanding."

Anonymous, LA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Comfort"

JOHN S., NJ (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Even with air conditioning on, the car accelerates quickly and smoothly. Handling on the highway is fantastic, at any speed."

Anonymous, VA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"FWD is difficult to gauge at times, especially in rainy conditions; traction slips when accelerating from a stop. Highway ride is smooth and seamless, easy to control."

F H., VA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"We use the Highlander for family trips and it is very comfortable and has plenty of room for us and all our gear."

Anonymous, MD (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Very strong V6 engine, rides great."

ANTHONY B., NY (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Low ground clearance. It's still an average within the crossover class, but can't compete with off-road vehicle. Would love to see 9-10" of ground clearance, so vehicle can be used for deep outdoors camping trips. Also would like to have standard transfer case like light trucks have to have better ability of towing and lunching the boat."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"The full time 4WD does very well in snow. It drives well, but the ride is on the stiffer side."

Steve R., CA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"It is very powerful for a v6 and handles well on the road."

Paul M., MO (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"very nice driving dynamics even with 129K miles on it. One of the best rides I've ever owned"

"The steering is too soft in the highway. Too much movement when driving in a curvy road"

Anonymous, PR (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"The front end of the Highlander isn't stable and has to be realigned approximately every 3000 miles. If not the front end creeks that is felt in the steering wheel. Dealers say everything is normal."

"Very adequate, no deficiencies noted."

Allen G., NE (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"good drive"

Thomas D., TN (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Strong power and very responsive, while still maintaining good mileage."

Jackie M., TX (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"With 270 horsepower it accelerates very well. But it is a Toyota and it doesn't handle yes well. It's competent but you don't want to push it too much around curves."

Douglas Y., CT (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Have the towing option which gives the car very quick acceleration in traffic."

Michael S., TX (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"great value little up keep"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"The FWD V6 does not handle well when accelerating uphill. It feels like you do not have total control. We previously owned a 4WD Highlander and I regret not getting 4WD for our 2011 model."

Kevin P., GA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Very good at acceleration and handles very well, esp when needing to avoid unexpected items in road."

Anonymous, MS (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Acceleration is very good, handle great for a vehicle of this size."

Anonymous, WV (2011 Toyota Highlander)

Paul C., CA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"When passing on country two-lane roads good acceleration is a must have and this vehicle has more than enough. With all wheel drive this vehicle makes it up my very steep driveway without difficulty in the snow. I never hesitate to drive the ten miles to town even when the roads have not been plowed--my Highlander will get me there and back home again without difficulty."

Anonymous, FL (2011 Toyota Highlander)

Ken K., IL (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Wish it got better gas mileage but not too bad for what it is"

Scott G., AK (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Drives very well, comfortable for four adults and two young children. Fuel economy acceptable. Silver paint after 7 years as "good as new." No corrosion found."

Linda C., FL (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"The hybrid means it is slow to accelerate at first then if you keep on the gas it "grabs and goes" pulling hard on the front tires. This is not helpful in traffic- a smoother acceleration that kicks in earlier would be better."

Anonymous, HI (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"It responds as necessary."

Anonymous, WA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"I have never felt unsafe in my Highlander – – the pick up is excellent and the drive is very comfortable. I find that handles well on both the open highway as well as in the city."

Janice I., VA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Highlander drives great. It feels solid and very predictable. 2011 model still has mechanical AWD and this gives you control over the road in any weather condition unlike competitors electronic AWD which are useless as they switch on/off erratically and overheat/fail after some use. Highlander system can run full day in any road or weather condition which gives you an ability to come to your destination in time. It also handles corners with minimal lean and in very predictable manner. This is an easy to drive vehicle with comfort for full family."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Smooth ride. Could corner better. Very good to drive on highways."

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Toyota Highlander)

Gary W., CA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"This auto is very quick. The acceleration is excellent."

Raymond P., NV (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"The Highlander handles well in driving situations. My wife doesn't demand great acceleration just that it be reliable. She has no complaints about about handling although she frequently mentions she would like to have her earlier Honda Odyssey back. We might get another one soon but for reasons on related to acceleration or handling."

R G., TX (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Very good acceleration when needed. Comfortable ride and very good handling"

John C., PA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Excessive wind noise especially from the rear windows."

Anonymous, CT (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"The seats are not luxurious, actually stiff and not comfortable for long trips. The big positive is that for a larger vehicle, it handles like a car."

DOUG R., NY (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"It would really make me happy if the noise level was less. Especially on the highway"

Anonymous, TX (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Seat uncomfortable on long trips."

Anonymous, VA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"The refined ride and comfortable seats."

PAUL M., MO (2011 Toyota Highlander)

EDWIN G., PA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

Anonymous, FL (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Seats are not very comfortable for me. I end up with back ache on trips over an hour."

BARBARA W., CA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"I was used to the bucket seat in my old Camry, and when driving at higher speeds on the highway and around curves, the seat bottom and back do not seem to keep me securely in place and must place my elbow on the window sill to not be jostled around. Otherwise, after taking a 10,000 + kilometer journey across the country, I found that I had no back pain since my back was well supported, as were my upper legs."

DANIEL D., BC (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Very quite well built"

MIKE C., MD (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Very comfortable on long trips, great visibility"

ROBERT S., OH (2011 Toyota Highlander)

MIKE C., MA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"In 2011, automatic climate control was only available in the very high end models."

STEVE R., CA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"I find the seats are too hard sitting on for long distance driving. Need softer seats in the front."

RICK R., OR (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Seat's back does not adjust enough. The controls on steering wheel are where hands go when driving so pushing them accidentally and sometimes things are deleted."

Anonymous, PA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"GREAT CAR"

ANDREW M., NJ (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Extremely comfortable and climate control is easy to work both front and rear seats. My previous car was a Lexus SUV and I found the Highlander easy to handle but was not aware of the considerable size difference between that and my small Lexus. I actually prefer the smaller car but I didn't like the new Lexus when I was looking last year."

R H., NH (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"the trunk door hasn't functioned well for two years- they say not fixable"

Anonymous, GA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Climate control and ride are very good. The leg room is a little cramped for my 6 ft frame. If the seats had another 2 inches of leg room, it would be excellent. On long trips, the leg room is an annoyance. The noise level could be better. Tire noise on some roads is very loud."

M S., TX (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Great for long trips. Very comfortable seats. Quiet"

Anonymous, MN (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Driver saet gets hard after a couple of hours driving."

Anonymous, IN (2011 Toyota Highlander)

John B., CA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"tOO MUCH WIND NOISE"

"Very quiet. Seats supportive and comfortable."

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"This is a good vehicle for long trips - it has space and the ride is comfortable. It also has extra cup holders - which our family finds useful on long car rides."

Kevin P., GA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Comfortable for 4 on long trips except front passenger right foot space is intruded by wheel well -- Tiring for tall passenger. Third row probably as good as any similar sized SUV -- good for kids, ok for short agile adults on short trips."

Anonymous, MS (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"My GMC Sierra has seat setting for two drivers. the Highlander does not! the 2010 Hyundai Veracruz we previously owned had this feature."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Toyota Highlander)

Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Still rides like it did when new. Very quiet and refined with no rattles or squeaks"

Paul M., MO (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Fan is somewhat loud at times"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"obviously the driver's seat is the most used. It is showing more wear than I would like, not just on the fabric, but in the support. Driver's seats should be made stronger since they are always used, whereas others are only sometimes used and wear at a slower pace. The structural wear of the seat affects comfort."

Anonymous, OH (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Driver's seat is very uncomfortable. Not enough padding. I had to add something to make it tolerable."

Anonymous, MS (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Great vehicle for long distance travel, very comfortable, not tiring at all."

Anonymous, WV (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"it is an awesome vehicle, low noise, really comfortable seats, smooth ride"

Anonymous, TN (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Generally speaking, the ride is good, but get worse over rough pavement. Ride and comfort have changed over time getting noisier and less enjoyable. One thing I've noticed is the ride quality is heavily dependant on the type of tires on the vehicle. I had one set of Bridgestones that ruined the ride and upped the noise levels to unbearable on some pavements. I remember seeking out smooth sections of roadway, just to lower the din. My latest set of tires, Michelin, transformed the vehicle making it livable and a pleasure to drive, once again."

Paul C., CA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Since I am short, this vehicle fits me very comfortably in reaching the brake pedal and the seat supports my body well."

Roseann T., ID (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Comfort is fine but road noise is a little on the loud side."

Anonymous, WA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"I drive to Florida in the fall and back to Minnesota in the Spring. I am driving approximately 8 to 10 hours. I have back problems and I don't experience problems with this vehicle. The car is quiet with a small ride. I don't want to ever sell it."

Anonymous, FL (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Easy to get in and out"

Anonymous, IN (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"The seats are very comfortable and easy to shift for leg room as well as tilting the seat back. We particularly enjoy the seat heating function, especially when the weather cools off. Sometimes just because the heat feels good on our lower backs regardless of the weather. The car rides relatively quietly so we can have conversations although listening with hearing aids is challenging. The steering wheel is responsive and controls are easy to reach. We don't use the Bluetooth cell phone connection by personal choice."

"I bought the 4-cyl and get 24mpg with plenty of power, space, and comfort. The purcjase price was also several $1000s cheaper"

David D., SC (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"148000 miles and I change the oil(synthetic) every 10k and a filter every 5k. Other than the recommended periodic maintenance I've done brakes and changed the plugs that's it. When this car decides to quit it won't owe me a penny."

Gary W., CA (2011 Toyota Highlander)

"Hybrid is NOT worth the money. I owned a Prius before this, knew how mileage related to that posted. Asked repeatedly, "will I get MPG you post for Highlander?" Told yes, you might get better. It's not close to what they post. Not much better than standard gas engine, should just buy that rather than Hybrid. I'll not get a hybrid mid- to large- SUV unless there is documented evidence they outperform a gas engine. My experience is not close."
