Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Display screen difficult to see

"The screen is not set back so is hard to see at times because they sun will hit it"

Peter O., CO (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"In virtually all bright light conditions the glare blocks use of display screen . This is dangerous when trying to use the backup screen function"

Anonymous, NC (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Screen is at angle on the dash, with no type cover to prevent glare from sun and daytime lighting which makes it difficult to read. Also, there is no separate dimmer control so at night, you cannot adjust the brightness down so as to not to ruin your night vision"

Anonymous, IA (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Can't see the display in the sunshine - it is at th wrong angle. Hard to see display all he time with my polarized sunglasses on"

Anonymous, MI (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Not visible if sun is entering car at certain angles"

Nancy A., FL (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Screen is useless in sunny conditions, which is often"

Scott I., GA (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Screen is not compatible with polarized sun glasses. Must turn head in a most uncomfortable an dangerous angle in order to view display"

Larry K., NY (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)
Display screen freezes up

"The Entune entertainment system would freeze and then restart several times per hour. Dealer updated software under warranty and problem is resolved."

Thomas K., VA (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Freezes up and then later works correctly."

Anonymous, OR (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Occasionally the display screen freezes and we cannot operate any of the features (audio, GPS , bluetooth) when this happens. The system also occasionally stops and reboots itself. This doesn't affect the operation of the car, but it makes using the GPS unreliable. Its annoying but because its intermittent we're waiting until it dies to gt it repaired or replaced."

Bruce F., NH (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"When it freezes, which has only been a handful, I stop and turn off the engine and start again and that seems to fix it. I have informed my service manager and it should be fixed with my next service."

Anonymous, IL (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"The screen freezes and eventually resets, it seems to be tied to an incoming email on my phone while listening to XM radio or music via bluetooth"

David D., MI (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Periodically the display screen freezes up and the radio stops playing. The whole system can only be made to work again by turning the whole vehicle on and off again. By the time the problem came up it was out of warranty."

Thomas G., VA (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Radio reboots itself, very unpredictable"

Stephen C., MD (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The display goes blank for brief periods while the system resets itself about once every trip. When using GPS navigation, this can occur at very inconvenient times."

Steven F., UT (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The whole display/bluetooth/music system just stops working and I have to press the on/off button and hold it down to restart it or wait 5 or so min for it to restart itself."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Highlander LE 3.5-L V6)

"Often freezes, reboots, etc. Very annoying especially having to reenter GPS destination data."

E S., TX (2015 Toyota Highlander LE Plus 3.5-L V6)

"There seem to be serious problems with the software. Really disappointed in Toyota over the poor quality of their in-car electronics."

Kurt V., AE (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"the display would freeze when using the navigation system the dealership replaced the display, radio, navigation component"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The system kept randomly rebooting. When I finally remembered to tell the dealer, their response was that it was a known issue and if I had complained sooner they would have fixed it. Now they won't because in trying to get it to respond, I pressed so hard the screen fractured aND so they refuse to even tell me how to get it fixed"

Laurel K., MD (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Screen freezes up"

Billie G., TX (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The system would simply freeze. Unable to adjust volume, change station, turn on or off. When using the nav system, this would simply freeze where the vehicle was located on the screen. The only fix was to hold the on/off button in a reset sort of move, o r wait until the system reset itself, usually about a half hour later. This was unacceptable while using the navigation system"

Timothy G., OH (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Ongoing problem that was eventually resolved with system update"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Screen freezes, cpu reboots, maybe once every 2 weeks. Dealer replaced in dash system"

Anonymous, LA (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"This required a service visit for an upgrade"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Info center locks up and there is no control over it. It also reboots randomly"

B B., TX (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The multi function info display and center dash display have frozen more than once"

Anonymous, NC (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"GPS screen freezes up to many times"

Kenneth P., SC (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

James G., ME (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Display screen freezes after 1st year. No applications and functions were available. Returned to dealer 3 times before they proved to themselves that it was a manufacture's defect and replaced it"

Anonymous, CO (2015 Toyota Highlander LE 3.5-L V6)

"Numerous problems including frequent crashes and failure to connect to recent-model iPhone. Eventually fixed via firmware update"

Anonymous, MA (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Display screen would lockup, stopping all interface to GPS, Radio, had to shut car off then restart to reboot"

John R., AL (2015 Toyota Highlander LE 3.5-L V6)

"Using GPS navigation screen would freeze up, reset only by shutting off car. However, Toyota issued a fix on it's web site. I down loaded the fix, and uploaded it into my system. This fixed the problem and no further issues have developed."

Gerald G., NH (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The GPS screen wouldn't operate correctly."

Michael B., OH (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Continuing problems with the poor quality Entune system. I am not willing to purchase another Toyota with this feature."

Anonymous, IN (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The screen freeze is related to the Entune rebooting previously described under blank screen problem."

G J., TX (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Display screen freezes and after a time reboots. You cannot play radio, cd, and if using gps you do not get directions. You don't always realize zenith has frozen or rebooted itself because you are paying more attention to driving. The biggest issue is with the gps. Once it reboots your destination has to be reset. Often, it may freeze and reboot several times especially on longer distance trips. Annoying and dangerous as it could be easy to miss turns, etc."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The dealership told me software updates were not included in the warranty and had to pay out of pocket. The screen was freezing/restarting because the software had not been updated since purchase."

Kristina C., CA (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"This is a random reoccurring event. While driving with system on, the system freezes, then reboots. Sometimes several times during a one hour ride, other times not at all."

Robert O., MD (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The screen return icon in the top right corner is non-functional. The Entire system freezes up and resets randomly. We have addressed this with the dealership and still continues to be an issue since buying this car brand new."

Anonymous, NV (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The system kept rebooting and then froze and when I tried to get it to work the screen broke. When I went to the dealer they told me it was a Known problem and if I had COMPLAINED about it when I had the car serviced they would have fixed it. I haven't gone back to Toyota for service since."

Anonymous, MD (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"display screen randomly freezes up for a couple of minutes, then reboots itself. Usually happens several times in a row, then randomly stops as sudden as it started. It could be days or a week or so in between occurances. Because it doesn't happen when I have car at the dealer, they tell me they cannot fix it."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Display freezes up sometimes 2-3 times on a short 1-hour drive. Can happen once per week and sometimes not for a whole month. When it happens, the whole infotainment and navigation are inoperable for 5-10 mins until the systems reboots on its own."

Anonymous, QC (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"System will freeze and reboot occasionally."

William M., NC (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"Every winter the screen goes blank, however it continues to work when you touch it, it comes on again.....only seems to happen during the winter??"

George Z., ON (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The Entune entertainment system would freeze and then would go blank and restart several times per hour. Dealer updated software under warranty and the problem is resolved."

Thomas K., VA (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The head unit reboots itself randomly with increasing frequency ."

Tim K., TX (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The GPS, radio and anything to do with the display blinks randomly. We called Toyota, they recommended we download the latest firmware and load it in the system which we did. The update did not work."

"Toyota did a software update and it solved the problem."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The screen freezes and does not respond to touchscreen or steering wheel controls. Eventually, the screen goes blank and the system restarts."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"I don't know where to start! It is absolutely useless. My iPhones (me and wife) pair when they want to, GPS is slow, the Voice Command never understands what I say (wife says the same thing about me!), maps are slow to respond and it goes blank randomly, even when using the back up camera! The knobs are very small and thin. They have no grip, I mean this is so badly designed I have a hard time believing its a toyota. Controls are too far from the drivers reach. After three attempts at updating the firmware they finally replaced the head unit. It seem to be a lot better, but not perfect as the design aspects are still a problem. I swore I was not going to buy another car without Car Play. That left Toyota out of the running. Now they say they are going to use Car Play. We'll see about that. Toyota was WAY behind the tech curve when almost every major manufacturer was using Car Play/Andriod Auto. What really bothers me is that Toyota (and other manufacturers) are using their customer base to do the Beta testing and R&D for them. I can understand this when you are improving a product that ALREADY WORKS! But to put in a disaster of a head unit and then try to fix it while the customer is paying the price?? I've used Entune app a few times, but it was more effort using the Entune than just using my iPhone. To all manufacturers: STOP TRYING TO RE_INVENT THE WHEEL! Smartphone manufacturers have already figured out the tech. Just pay the licensing and everyone is happy! You are already the biggest car maker in the world. You can afford it, especially when the customers are SCREAMING for it!"

"Inexplicably and seemingly randomly the Entune System freezes and promptly reboots and in that process it forgets and USB navigation settings and the music index of my USB drive if I am listening to my tunes. Radio selections are remembered. There can be a short (<60 minutes) or long (weeks) interval between incidents. I use continuously updated cellphone apps for navigation, so for me it is a minor, if annoying, audio inconvienence."

Anonymous, AL (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The GPS system suddenly started rebooting. The dealership covered the repair even though the car was out of warranty. The repair consisted of updating the firmware (that Toyota wanted to charge me for since the car was out of warranty). The dealership went to bad, since Toyota did not publicly announce the firmware update's availability."

"The nav system would freeze and reboot. After a while it would not even reboot. It crippled almost all electronic functions of the car. After some negotiations with Toyota they replaced the entire system."

Jeff Z., CA (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"essentially unusable"

Robert W., AZ (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"First and foremost, it is frustrating to be locked out of most of the touch screen controls when the Highlander is in motion. Toyota argues that this is a safety thing, but considering all the other distractions in even the most basic automobile, that is a ridiculous argument. Am I really supposed to believe that Toyota can’t add a sensor to unlock the controls when the passenger seat is occupied? This problem is made worse by the poor voice recognition, which means that I either have to stop the car or struggle to get the system to understand me. Whenever you stray off course, pretty much any GPS system will recalculate to get you back on track. But Toyota’s system is frustratingly stubborn in that it keeps trying to get you to turn around and pick up the route where you left off, even if that’s not the best available option. Sure, in some cases your best option will be to backtrack. But in most cases, other systems calculate a new route that either (eventually) intersects with the original route, or it takes you a different way entirely. As if that weren’t enough, I’ve been annoyed by the inability of the Toyota NAV system to find certain addresses. There have been two or three times at which I’ve tried to program in an address, but wasn’t able to do so. I’ve had instances where, for example, I needed to enter a four digit address and the system only allowed me to enter three digits. It’s as if the NAV maps didn’t include the full range of addresses along the road in question. Given that I’ve never had trouble finding addresses with my other GPS devices, this struck me as really weird. Are the Toyota maps really that incomplete? It appears so. As bad as all the previous shortcomings are, one of the worst is the basic user interface. Let me briefly describe the functioning of my $200 Garmin GPS device to establish a baseline: • Everything can be done at any time by either using the touch screen or voice commands; one can also use a random mixture of voice commands and touch screen entries. • So, using voice command, I say, “voice command,” or any other word or phrase I choose to program in. • The unit responds by saying, “say a command” while displaying a list of ten simple commands on the screen, which I have found cover every eventuality. • I say one of those commands. • The unit responds by doing what I ask or asking me for information in pieces, each time displaying my options on the screen. In summary, the device leads me through its menu, making a simple request each time it needs information, while displaying my response options on the screen. I don’t need to know or remember anything to use it. The Toyota Navigation system is useless. We now use our cell phones for directions."

Anonymous, UT (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Programming is some times difficult and the address is not accepted. Also the voice sometimes discontinues prior to reaching the distenation. A third problem is the system does not adapt if you decide to go a different route even if you selection is better. It will continue to send you back to the original rather then plot a new best route from your current location. (ways app way better)"

"Toyota's voice control is the worst thing about the car. It's worthless. You can say Call Jack Smith. It will say Tuning to FM station 107.5. Yes -- I attempted to train the software. The service tech's at the dealership said there is nothing they can do. It's a problem. Meanwhile, Android's Google almost never gets it wrong no matter how bad you mumble. So I have completely given up on trying to use Toyota's product since it's errors are a huge distraction while driving. It's been so frustrating that if Toyota cannot get Android Auto into the Highlander by the 2020 models, I'll switch to an Audi Q7 in a heartbeat. Additionally, there's no way I'm going to pay to update a GPS product in the dash that has imaging from the mid-1980s. Google Maps is so much better and far more up-to-date, particularly when combined with Waze. Toyota needs to get on board with Apple and Android, or I believe, many drivers will look elsewhere."

Anonymous, PA (2015 Toyota Highlander XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Door actuators are failing one at a time, at first intermittently before failing completely. Drivers door failed first, which meant to unlock you had to crawl across from the passenger side just to unlock the door. Replaced that one last summer at a cost of $500+. Next the passenger door began failing, so now if I attempt to open the door for my wife, more than half the time I end up having to go around and unlock it from the drivers side. And when it’s raining someone is gonna be upset. And it rains a lot here in Southeast Texas. Most recently the left rear door has quite locking/unlocking, again meaning that the only way to gain entry is to unlock it from another door. And these doors tend to remain unlocked while the car is in motion, which seems to me like that creates an unsafe situation. Also - When locking the vehicle you have to listen for the chirp of the alarm confirming the doors are locked and the system is armed. When it doesn’t chirp you have to go around the car and check each suspect door to make sure it’s locked. Only then will the alarm arm. All in all, quite a ridiculous situation for a supposedly “High End SUV”."

William W., TX (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Three of of the four power door lock actuators failed at about 48000 mile point. All within three months. Being out of warranty dealer repair was estimated at around 700$ for each door, parts and labor. Called Toyota Corporate as suggested by dealer and was told that since no recall is on file no assistance will be provided.Even a cursory search of the problem on the web revealed a troubling failure rate of this part, far more than expected on a three year old 50000$ car. Wound up ordering parts on line and replacing both front door actuators myself with help from an excellent utube video made by another disgruntled Toyota owner, total cost 530$. I can accept one part failure, but three is a trend."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"I used my own mechanics to check over the vehicle that was for sale. They spotted the timing cover oil leak. Either the dealership had not spotted it when they took it in in part exchange, or they just ignored it. I paid for the Highlander under the condition that the leak would be repaired by them. It was repaired under warranty (the vehicle was 1,000 km short of the end of the warranty period0. The huge repair took 2.5 days. It was not done correctly, and my mechanics later spotted a coolant leak. The dealership replaced the water pump, although the service desk lady said that the coolant leak came from an o-ring that had been badly installed during the oil leak repair. The water pump itself might have been ok, but they replaced it anyway while they were in there for the 2nd time. The vehicle is excellent otherwise. The whole event proves the logic of having a used vehicle inspected by your own mechanics. The cost of $120 for that inspection saved me thousands of dollars in repairs to a vehicle that looked ok on the lot and had been given a clean bill of health by the Toyota dealership."

Colin B., BC (2015 Toyota Highlander Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Had to return to dealer 5 times regarding oil leakage and arguing with the dealer who said that the oil leak was a seep and not a leak. Yet oil continued to leak at the rear seals. Our oil seep was finally resolved as well as a head gasket leak."
