    Performance
Acceleration Acceleration Acceleration tests are conducted on a smooth, flat pavement straightaway at the track. Time, speed, and distance measurements are taken with a precise GPS-based device that’s hooked to a data-logging computer.
0 to 60 mph 0 to 60 mph (sec.) The time in seconds that a vehicle takes to reach 60 mph from a standstill with the engine idling.
Transmission Transmission Transmission performance is determined by shifting smoothness, response, shifter action, and clutch actuation for manual transmissions.
Braking Braking The braking rating is a composite of wet and dry stopping distances and pedal feel. Braking distance is from 60 mph, with no wheels locked.
Emergency Handling Emergency Handling Several factors go into the rating, including the avoidance maneuver speed and confidence, as well as how the vehicle behaves when pushed to its limit.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

It has had a couple of wrecks, and now has a damaged door where I sideswiped a pole beside a parking space, but it the engine and brakes work, it gets me where I need to go and I haven't been able to replace it with one that has features I'd prefer."

    Engine computer

"The vehicle had an active recall on ECM failure with the Matrix/Corolla models. Despite properly being informed about other recalls I was not informed of this recall despite it being issued long after I owned the vehicle. The ECM issue was one nightmare symptom. The vehicle would start without issue but after 2 minutes of running the vehicle would stall and would be unable to be restarted. As I had previously mentioned this issue was disclosed to me as an active recall by my local Toyota dealer and the ECU was replaced remedying the issue. The larger issue was the complete and utter failure of Toyota of North America to inform me of this recall. What added insult to injury was Toyota's insistence that I needn't be notified because my vehicle wasn't in the range of units they had recalled. I humbly believe they downplayed the amount of units afflicted with defective ECU's."

Anonymous, NJ (2007 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"For no reason it wouldn't start. had to have it towed to the shop. then it would magically start. this happened several times"

Anonymous, MN (2007 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Oil leaks

"Age and me age wear and tear required the replacement of several major gaskets which required significant labour and therefore cost. Approx. $1,700 before tax"

Anonymous, ON (2007 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"On this engine a common problem is the seals on the timing chain tensioner to leak oil. It's a $30 part and takes at most 30 min for you to change out yourself. Simple easy fix, you can Youtube the procedure, that's what I did. Piece of advice was it was easier to jack the car up to reset the tensioner when you crank the engine back , than to reach in from the top."

Anonymous, PA (2007 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"This year I had a second oil leak. The drain plug deteriorated and was failing."

Deborah F., CO (2007 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Clutch replacement

"This is not specific to the clutch. After 12 years of basically maintenance free use, the repairs we experienced over the last 12-18 months all happened one after the other. Clutch, Transmission, Muffler, Shocks, brakes so we kept paying. If we had known the total cost of repairs, we would have replaced the car."

Anonymous, ON (2007 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Vehicle was slow to take off, felt like the clutch might be slipping. Didn't have the punch when I tried to take off. I was hoping clutch could be adjusted, but had to be replaced."

Ed B., CA (2007 Toyota Matrix Standard 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"This was actually the second clutch to be placed into the car. The first was around 105000 miles and it was caused, I believe, by my wife riding the clutch at stoplights. The second clutch replacement was done at 128000 miles. I believe there was a problem with the first clutch. The dealer said that the flywheel should have been replaced when the first clutch was added. Same dealer did both clutch replacements."

Anonymous, OH (2007 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Transmission rebuild or replacement

"The clutch wore out because of use. When we drove the car after the repair we noticed a noise. We are not sure if it was there before. We had to return the car and we were charged the labour to replace a bearing in the transmission. We were told some Matrix had this transmission issue. If It was checked when the clutch was being changed we would have saved some labour costs."

Anonymous, ON (2007 Toyota Matrix XR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"This is the second time I replaced the transmission. I believe Toyota has a problem with their manual transmission"
