Performance
Acceleration Acceleration Acceleration tests are conducted on a smooth, flat pavement straightaway at the track. Time, speed, and distance measurements are taken with a precise GPS-based device that’s hooked to a data-logging computer.
0 to 60 mph 0 to 60 mph (sec.) The time in seconds that a vehicle takes to reach 60 mph from a standstill with the engine idling.
Transmission Transmission Transmission performance is determined by shifting smoothness, response, shifter action, and clutch actuation for manual transmissions.
Braking Braking The braking rating is a composite of wet and dry stopping distances and pedal feel. Braking distance is from 60 mph, with no wheels locked.
Emergency Handling Emergency Handling Several factors go into the rating, including the avoidance maneuver speed and confidence, as well as how the vehicle behaves when pushed to its limit.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Still, overall, Matrix offered a good and practical alternative to a small SUV.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2009 Toyota Matrix owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"Experienced the 2nd failure of a rear speed sensor for the ABS system. The 1st was 50% covered by Toyota years ago. This one was entirely my (large) expense though the dealership discounted my bill > 20%."

James H., MN (2009 Toyota Matrix Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"ABS light comes on intermittently. Requires replacement of rear wheel bearing assembly which includes the ABS wheel sensor"

David K., PA (2009 Toyota Matrix Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"premature failure of the rear ABS sensor causing an ABS failure. I had to pressure the dealer to admit there was a TSB on the problem and the ultimately agreed to provide the replacement sensor at no cost, only labor"

James H., MN (2009 Toyota Matrix Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Had to change the breaks (discs and pads) rear and front + a wheel bearing for ABS. Total close to 1000$"

Martin G., QC (2009 Toyota Matrix Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Brake light came on. Diag. Tool gave me left rear sensor failure but I only had to disconnect and reconnect the connector a few times to get rid of the problem. Good thing I didn't go to the garage, they would probably have changed parts for Nothing"

Anonymous, QC (2009 Toyota Matrix Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Calipers

"Front calipers filed (stuck) within 30 days of a 4-wheel brake job and warped new rotors. The caliper failure wasn't necessarily pre-mature give age/milage of vehicle but, caused significant additional damage. Dealership replaced rotors at no cost to me."

James H., MN (2009 Toyota Matrix Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"See Toyota Service Bulletin T-SB-0048-13 Uneven Rear Brake Pad Wear. I had to replace rear pads & rotors at 46,188 km and at 58,387 km. That's only 12,199km ! Jammed calipers. I spent more than $1000 for those crappy pads and rotors so far !"

Anonymous, QC (2009 Toyota Matrix Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Jolanta C., NH (2009 Toyota Matrix Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"My wife's car. She tends to ride the brakes. Hence the wear to same."

Anonymous, YT (2009 Toyota Matrix XRS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"There was a scraping noise coming from the front right side. I took my car to the Toyota dealership and had them look at it - my brakes were worn down to metal on metal. A few days later the replaced everything that needed to be replaced to the tune of $600. It was necessary work , and I’m safer now, as those around me are also."

Mary D., MI (2009 Toyota Matrix 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"There was metallic screeching noise. I believe the brakes were wearing out too quickly"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Matrix Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"BRAKES ALMOST WEAR DOWN TO THE PAD"

Peter L., ON (2009 Toyota Matrix Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, AZ (2009 Toyota Matrix XRS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The rear brake callipers needs a special tool to compress the cylinder to install new brake pads ,making this a major pain in the butt after finding out one cannot do their brakes till this tool is purchased"

Anonymous, AB (2009 Toyota Matrix S 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Cylinder head

"Toyota knows the high oil consumption that this vehicle due to defects in the piston rings but refuse to fix the problem. I am second owner of this vehicles. I will drive this vehicles and keep adding oil until it stops running. I will buy another vehicle but stay away from Toyota. Engine rebuild or replacement

"engine gave out and was replaed"

Anonymous, MI (2009 Toyota Matrix S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine oil consumption was excessive. No leaks, just went through it well before the 5,000 check-up interval. The local Toyota dealer told me it was a problem Toyota was aware of, and that they would take care of it even though the car was well out of the warranty period. They performed an oil consumption test to confirm the excessive usage and make sure I qualified for the engine rebuild. I did, and so I had it done. Toyota didn't pay 100% of the cost, but the lion's share. In essence, I now have a brand new engine that should take me another 150,000 miles. I have been extremely happy with this car, so I am very grateful to the dealership for tipping me off on this service and for the work they did to make my car new again."

James B., CA (2009 Toyota Matrix XRS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

The first OEM fuel pump the mechanic installed was non-functional, so they had to take it out and install a second, new, OEM pump.
