Even after the "wow factor" of the Prius's hybrid design wears off, the car is still an inviting, well-designed, functionally useful car. Its remarkably high fuel economy makes this a cost-effective commuting car, but the Prius is also practical on longer trips. The gas/electric drivetrain works flawlessly and doesn't call attention to itself.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

NA

What Owners Say

“It has excellent acceleration on ingress ramps. I think it surprises other drivers that it can get up and go. It has quick steering which I like and takes sharp curves very well. It sticks to road in curves and feels very stable. The only complaint I would have with handling is the 13 inch tires are can make deep snow hard to handle. But it is a small car so I think that is to be expected.”

ART F., MI (2001 Toyota Prius)

“Excellent turn radius. Fun to drive.”

ANNE R., VA (2001 Toyota Prius)

“It is comfortable to drive in for long periods of time, gets very good mileage, does well on hills and level surfaces. Could use more complementary additions (e.g., map app, tissue holder, audible alarm system)”

VIRGINIA H., VA (2001 Toyota Prius)

“Passing power. This car was bashed by the press for lack of power, but after break-in it actually is quite peppy. Sure it's no Tesla, but it is much more capable than the numbers might indicate.”

GEORGE O., CA (2001 Toyota Prius)

“Easily keep up with urban traffic. Handles well in city driving”

WALTER M., CA (2001 Toyota Prius)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

NA

What Owners Say

“The suspension is bumpy, but then the roads are so much worse than when we bought the car.”

CATHERINE C., MI (2001 Toyota Prius)

“too much road noise, can't hear the radio/cd when on highway.”

PAUL R., CA (2001 Toyota Prius)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

NA

What Owners Say

“We bought this car new in 2001 and have loved it ever since. We've put very little money into maintenance and repair and it's still going strong 15 years later.”

Anonymous, CT (2001 Toyota Prius)

“105000 miles with no major repairs. Perfect for urban driving”

WALTER M., CA (2001 Toyota Prius)

“Considering it's frequency-of-repair record, mpg rate and other factors ... even a 1st generation Prius is one of the best values, on the road.”

JOHN B., KY (2001 Toyota Prius)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

NA

What Owners Say

“It doesn't have the rounded front of most styles of hybrid cars”

Anonymous, WA (2001 Toyota Prius)

Percentage of owners who would definitely purchase that same vehicle again. Owner-satisfaction Ratings are determined by the percentage of those who answered "definitely yes" to the question asked by the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?". If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
