Opting for the high-end Touring version of the Prius brings wider wheels and tires and a tighter suspension than the car's base version. This gives it better handling and braking, so it got through our avoidance maneuver three mph faster. It also stopped about 10 feet shorter from 60 mph. The main performance drawback is lower mpg: 42 vs. 44. However, the edge in performance could also give drivers an extra margin of safety.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"My major problem with Prius is the number of BLIND Spots. Both front side mirrors block a large area snd the rear window in separated by large area in the middle. I don't feel as safe driving this as I do some other vehicles."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"SO MUCH BETTER THAN ANY OTHER CAR I HAVE HAD.BACK UP ACCELERATING IS. A BIT SENSITIVE. I WOULD CERTAINLY DESIRE LESS ROAD NOISE! I THINK THIS COULD BE RELATIVELY EASY TO IMPROVE WITH CARPETING, ETC. WHEN OTHER PEOPLE DRIVE MY CAR, THEY WANTED IT THEMSELVES. (2009) THE CLIMATE CONTROL ON THE DRIVAERS' SIDE IN COLD WEATHER IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR WARMTH. THE LED DISPLAY IS NOT GOOD. NO ONE CAN SEEM TO CONTROL THE BRIGHT DIPLAY AT NIGHT. IT IS TOO TRICKY TO TURN BACK ON OR TO CUT THE LIGH"

DONNA S., OR (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I was very unexpectedly pleased with the quick acceleration, and acceleration up to 80 mph; then it dawned on me - I have 2 engines."

KENNETH B., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It seems to hover over the road and doesn't take bumps very well. The yellow light comes on and it feels as though I am going into a skid."

P L., MA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I found that the car's computer, using cruise control, gets the best gas mileage. So I use it whenever I can, even on city streets going as slowly as 25 mph."

STUART B., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Front wheels often slip when trying to accelerate quickly especially on wet roads with good tires."

RICHARD S., MD (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Mediocre tires. Adequate handling. Adequate acceleration. Not the car for high speed pursuit or truly bad weather- but absolutely fine for day to day driving around."

ED E., PA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"only road noise bothers me; acceleration and handling satisfactory."

DONALD W., GA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Performance very well for such a small engine"

TIMOTHY C., MN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"a fun car to drive"

W B., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"after purchasing the vehicle, took a rode trip to Washington state. during the journey, encountered a variety of weather, a variety of height elevations, unexpected obstacles, many varied road conditions. the Prius handled well! very surprised and satisfied with the overall performance. one obstacle in particular the prius came upon allowed us to name the prius, Tumbleweeds. It handled the maneuver like a champ!"

LOY H., OK (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The Prius, compared to the CR-V, is slow to accelerate and has sloppy handling and dead, no feel of the road steering."

T B., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Even though this car gets excellent gas mileage, I still have a very good acceleration as well as very good handling on the road."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I would like to have the 3 power choices other then that it handles well."

WILLIAM M., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Just somewhat sluggish in accelerating. Brake response is different than past cars I've owned: there is a slight delay in the brake response because of the newer technology."

Anonymous, VA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Acceleration is good. Handles like a charm. Corners well."

ROBERT S., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"My next car may be purchased with better acceleration"

Anonymous, FL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The ride is a bit noisy and rough (I feel ever bump in the road)"

Anonymous, NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"We tend to try to beat the EPA MPG ratings and can do it on long trips; sometimes around town. Cold weather and very hot days with the AC running are the exceptions. If I need the acceleration, it is there."

PETER E., NC (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Acceleration is sluggish but decent for a four cylinder. The steering is mushy and sluggish, which seems to be the hallmark of Toyotas (I owned another Toyota Avalon which also had mushy/sluggish steering)."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Acceleration is really acceptable. Handling is quite poor. Lots of body roll. Fells unstable on windy days."

Anonymous, MA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"wimpy acceleration. can hardly clime steep hills or mountains."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Do not feel safe driving this car in inclement weather. When air conditioner is on, engine sounds like a truck engine straining with up hill acceleration. Drove cross country and on a few long trips in this car very comfortably. One long trip was with 4 adults. Plenty of space and 50+ mpg. No inclement weather however."

WILLIS G., TN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"good acceleration, fun to drive."

W B., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Its acceleration is adequate and handling is good, but the cruise control is imprecise and annoying to use."

George S., CO (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Love how quietly it rides, especially at low speeds on the electric engine only. Reacts agilely at any speed with either/both engines. And does okay accelerating onto a freeway, although you can hear the engine laboring slightly to do so."

Jean C., MN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Drives well - reliable. OK handling in the winter, wish it had all-wheel drive."

Timothy P., MN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Didn't I just answer this? You got me confused----"

Anonymous, AK (2009 Toyota Prius)

"underpowered on most hills."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I can count on the power when I need it. Not too often do I need it to accelerate but its there."

Anonymous, CO (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Usable acceleration and predicable handling. Make sure tires are up to snowy conditions"

John K., IL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The car handles well. Acceleration is not outstanding, but I was not looking for a race car. I wanted a car with outstanding mpg and it delivers. It's fun to watch the mpg on the display and see how small adjustments in driving habits (like not trying to accelerate from zero to 45 in a few seconds) can make a huge difference."

Christine E., PA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"155,000 miles with no major issues!"

Kerry T., MD (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Handles very well. Accelerates very well."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"You have to get used to driving a Prius, it's slightly different than a gas car but can accelerate responsively when it has to."

Anonymous, MN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The acceleration is strong for such a small engine & the turning radius is excellent!"

Daniel C., GA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It has a terrible blind spot that is quite dangerous, especially on the highway."

Anonymous, TN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"handling and acceleration are more than adequate for both street and highway driving"

Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I recently found myself on a two-lane road where I had to pass slower vehicles during breaks in oncoming traffic. While the car was up to the task, it was obvious that the engine was working hard. Test drives of the newest generation of Prius lead me to believe that this issue has been addressed. Driving at freeway speeds was a bit noisy, but the engine was up to the task (even during prolonged periods of upper 90 degree weather)."

Mark S., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Handles well, acceleration is just fine (if that were a concern, I'd never have bought it)"

Stephen P., FL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Love it!"

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It accelerates very well considering the gas mileage and handles very well."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Handling is good but acceleration up hills reminds me of a Volkswagen beetle"

Daniel C., GA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"My complaint is about it's built in GPS. It's hard to use and too many times took me to unexpected locations rather than the one I thought I requested. So I went back to my trusty Garmin which never lets me down."

Joseph G., OK (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The gas milage always puts a smile on my face at the pumps. Handling is very good for the small engine thats inside the hood. Your not going to win the quarter mile drag race, but it has enough xxxxx to pull away from road hazards."

Clement S., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It has rather mediocre acceleration and has a difficult time getting started on wet pavement."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The prius exceeds expectations in driving, style, power, handling in rain and snow, and mpg. It fails considerably in the engineering of the navigation system. I gave up on it shortly after I purchased it and went back to my tried-and-true Garmin GPS. It baffles me that the rest of the engineering could be so good and on this one element, they failed. Couldn't they just partner with Garmin?"

Michael S., OR (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It’s not ultra fast but it can hold its own up to 75 mph which is too fast in any event. The car is sure footed in summer and winter."

Stephen P., PE (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Love it’s handling, it’s very small turning radius. With both engines engaged, it accelerates beautifully, if a bit noisily."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Handles well in city driving and on road trips."

Anonymous, VA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The Prius, when roads are wet, will ALWAYS slip when starting from a stop at an intersection. The tires don't get a purchase on the road. This is really bad when you are attempting to get into traffic in a hurry from say, a stop at a side road road onto a major thoroughfare with traffic. That slip of the tires causes a hesitation before the car actually moves forward. Also, the car is not good in snow, though my brother and parents both had Priuses and put snow tires on them and said that improved the driving in snow. One other issue of note. I have reynauds, which means when my hands and feet get cold they go numb and turn white. In very cold weather, the Prius doesn't put out quite as much heat as does a traditional gas fueled engine car. This has been a problem for me living in Minnesota."

Dawn V., MN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"easy control, very good turning radius"

Barbara S., NC (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Without even trying, usually the first out at a stoplight change."

Anonymous, AZ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Short turning radius; good acceleration since both the gas engine and the electric motor work together."

William M., WI (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Acceleration is sometimes too sluggish for safe freeway driving in emergency situations."

Linda P., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Prius is the car we take on long trips. Acceleration is adequate for highway driving. Car handles well except on snowy or icy roads, then not so well."

Anonymous, CO (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Fun to drive. Holds the road well on corners, responds quickly to a situation like another car coming into your lane. Has plenty acceleration and power getting onto highway that is going uphill."

Dana J., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Surprisingly fast off the line and easy to steer in tight spots."

Scott C., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"We have over 220K miles and it still is a pleasure to drive. Seats are comfortable and almost look new. I have no trouble driving with traffic at internet speeds."

Anonymous, TN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I feel I have good control - tight steering, responsive braking, fantastic acceleration and maneuverability in tight situations"

Kim H., NM (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It is remarkably peppy for a car that gets 42 mpg. Performance is better when it's lightly loaded, of course. Handling, braking and steering took a little getting used to when I first bought the car, but the learning curve was quick."

Tom G., NC (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Accelerates well, great mileage. Good handling on highway"

Ellis C., CO (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It's very average."

Charles K., MI (2009 Toyota Prius)

"No road feedback to the steering wheel causing multiple input to the wheel from the drive. Suspension is so-so - sloppy. Otherwise a very reliable auto."

T B., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It is a fun car to drive, small, easy handling and smooth"

Warren B., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Its acceleration is adequate to keep up with traffic and its handling is good."

George S., CO (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Handles ok, a little loose at highway speeds, but accelleration is even worse than my 2001 Prius. Still love the car, but it sure is slow."

Robert R., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Handling is great! acceleration is slow."

Jim L., MA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Hard to see out of the car--roof supports are too wide"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Seats can't be raised or lowered. I'm six feet tall, and I wish I could lower the seat to drive. Also, the rear view mirror is right in the center of the windshield. And the windshield itself seems to have a narrow viewing range compared to other cars I've had."

WILL R., TN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The car is very noisy, especially on rough pavement. This makes the sound system quality somewhat of a minor issue since it cannot be heard above the road noise on many of California's roads."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Squeaks coming from the dashboard so we have to plug it with bits of paper or cardboard to stop the noise."

Anonymous, OH (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Good for long trips."

JUDITH M., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"This car has a lot of road noise and I don't find the seats particularly comfortable."

W R., MA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Sitting for 20-30 minutes in and getting out of the vehicle from the driver's side tough on bad backs."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Smooth ride, great steering, very comfortable and quiet"

PHILIP G., MA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"1. Highway driving noise inside the cabin is noticeably higher than when highway driving our 1998 Camry xle. We find we don't listen to music CDs traveling in the Prius because of the the highway noise. 2. The cabin gets hot driving in the sun, although the automatic climate control manages this very well."

J H., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Car is noisy. Would like cabin noise to be less. Probably won't buy this model again because of the noise."

CORNELLS H., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The Prius looks little, yet my 6' 6" son fits easily inside the Prius and he actually has more room than in my previous Cadallac SRX"

JUDITH C., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Very good comfort. Very quiet drive."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"A lot of road noise"

BRUCE H., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"This year's Prius has thinly padded seats (I'm light-weight bodied). Also the conformation does not encourage one to sit up straight, but hunched over. Not good for posture nor for long-term driving."

Anonymous, AK (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Fuel economy"

Anonymous, MA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Very surprised at the comfort on a long road trip. Had brought a neck pillow expecting discomfort on a long trip but it wasn't necessary. Occasional stops to stretch legs was all that comfort required."

GINA V., WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Seats are uncomfortable for long trips (more than 2 hour), but great for around town. The best thing about climate control is that if you are waiting in your parked car, you can leave a/c running. It will run off battery with just a sip of gas about every 15 minutes. it would be great for a drive-in movie on a hot summer night!"

Anonymous, VA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Front seats do no go back far enough. A bit cramped for person with long legs"

Anonymous, VA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Comfort--made for little people."

JOHN L., CO (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Road noise at freeway speeds could be improved. Wish seats had adjustable lumbar support."

MICHAEL J., UT (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Overall quite comfortable, ride over bumps a bit less so but I would like to add the comment that this car is very accessible when you need to carry people who have certain disabilities -- very easy to get them in and out, also very easy to carry walkers and wheelchairs in the hatch"

Anonymous, CT (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The seats are perfect, even without electrical controls. Rear seat riders are always commenting on the surprising comfort and room."

WILLIAM M., WI (2009 Toyota Prius)

"My Prius can me terribly annoying with little creaks and squeaks from various parts of the dash board and the rear compartment cover bar. These squeaks are dependent on car speed, temperature and time of year - our summers in Arizona are much hotter then most and the squeaks get worse."

PHILLIP J., AZ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It is ok for me however my wife finds the 2010 to be more comfortable & prefers to use my daughters. Which also has 3 power options: std, econ; power. I would like to have those options plus the key sensor so you do not have to insert it to start the car. The only thing I do not like is the ground clearance of less then 5.5 or 6" which does not clear curbs & stops as they are 5-5.5" high resulting in ripping off the air deflector."

WILLIAM M., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"This is the first base model vehicle I've driven in over 30 years. won't do it again. Noisy, poor sound system, uncomfortable seats. Gas mileage is a different story."

DENNIS M., OH (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Back seats are very uncomfortable. All the bumps in the road are felt as the seats are right over the rear wheels The car is very noisy on acceleration. If it wasn't for the mpg, I wouldn't buy another one."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"seat height is perfect, easily enter and exit without pushing up or easing down. Air conditioner reliable. Back is larger than it looks and is level with tailgate; easy to transport large items."

MARCELLA N., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Rattles in the dash board Road noise at highway speeds"

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Somewhat noisy, Toyoya could have easily addressed; windows need much more tint"

Anonymous, AR (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Don't know that "comfort" is the right word, but the front driver's seat with the neck thing and all, as well as the shape of the back window, makes it very difficult for a driver, especially a short one, to see properly."

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Comfort is pretty good but I do hate that there is no a/c vent for rear passengers"

N H., AZ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"not particularly comfortable, ride is kind of ok, it's a kind of ok car with great efficiency. good for shopping because of the hatch."

DAVID S., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Everything on the vehicle rattles."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The seat comfort for the driver is not very comfortable on long trips. Maybe a seat with power controlled adjustment or better back support would help. For trips under 100 miles, it is okay."

R E., MI (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Seats are not as supportive as I'd like"

RUSSELL O., WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"We occasionally take long trips and the seats are comfortable enough that we do not complain of back aches as we have experienced in other vehicles."

PETER E., NC (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The car now has nearly 80,000 miles and it has become rattly and noisier. There are areas near both windshield sides, near the stereo that have gotten more and more rattly. Our 1999 Camry's interior is quieter than our Prius altho our Prius used to be about equal."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"the road noise for this vehicle makes driving it more than 30 minutes very unsatisfying - its fine for a quick trip to the store - one time we drove it for mileage down the west coast - Never again."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I wish there was less road noise in the car when traveling on the highway."

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Overall the drivers seat and knee space is a little small for me, but overall it ride is nice and quiet and has enough spunk to do well in traffic."

CLEMENT S., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Seats are not worthy of the car - very uncomfortable on long distance travel. Prius is in no way a drivers car - dead steering."

T B., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"quiet, dash controls for climate control and stereo. seats comfortable. good pick up acceleration."

MARLENE L., SC (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Its still a quiet ride, nothing rattles. For the short distances I drive the seats are still very comfortable and the ride smooth."

John T., FL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Noisy inside car when driving on freeway"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"As I age, and the car ages, I find the seats are comfortable when I am sitting BUT I get a severe crick in my hip when I stand up and limp a few steps with moderate pain. I am active and this is the only situation in which this particular crick occurs."

Anonymous, MA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"comfortable, plenty of leg room, durable"

Anonymous, AR (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I wish the Seats were wider and it has a lot of road noise. Its my wife's car but I do love the maneuverability."

Bruce B., WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Quite noisy"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Base model but seats are still not overly comfortable for anything more than a reasonably short trip. Maybe an hour or hour and a half and it's time to stretch the old legs. I'm only 5'10", but farthest back setting isn't far enough."

Marc F., MN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"While it's not surprising the Prius is far from quiet and as it ages it gets worse. It's not pleasant to ride in."

Micheal L., OR (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It sits very low and can be difficult to see around other people's huge vehicles."

Megann E., VA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Lovely. Comfortable, quiet, smooth, very pleasant."

Anonymous, IN (2009 Toyota Prius)

David A., IN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Too noisy. Cannot listen to the radio most of the time because of the noise."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The dashboard squeaks and rattles. It is stuffed with bits of card board between sections to minimize annoying sounds."

Anonymous, OH (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The seats are uncomfortable & for long trips we use gel pads to get through the trip. The road noise sometimes makes it difficult to hear each other"

Daniel C., GA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It feels surprisingly roomy for what looks like a small car from the outside; first-time passengers are often surprised and comment on this. Good lumbar support in the front seats. Everything is in easy reach. Ride is smooth."

Christine E., PA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Relatively comfortable. We frequently drive 300 miles non-stop and we are not tired."

Anonymous, MN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Unable to drive for long without developing excruciating pain in my right leg. Seats offer no support."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Seat comfort is terrible - hard, narrow "bucket" type seat. A slight bit better than previous 2007 Honda Civic (which was dreadful) with Prius having some better Lumbar support if you are tall (I am not, husband is). Head rests put my neck at awkward angle, creating strain with drives >30 min."

Anonymous, VT (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The driver's seat is uncomfortable. It should be deeper and provide more support in the thighs. I took my Prius to an auto upholsterer to add more cushioning to my seat. That helped. I also wish that there was at least a six way adjustment to the driver seat."

Harris H., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Very comfortable. However I Would like to be able to realign my seat after someone else has changed it."

Anonymous, CT (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Not very comfortable for taller drivers and passengers. The ride is fine but the noise level is rather high."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The seats are comfortable, it's pretty quiet and has a nice ride if you keep good tires on it."

Anonymous, MN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"For a small car, this Prius has a lot of comfort. We've taken it on several trips in and out of state and never regretted it. The only thing is you have to stop at some point because you will need a break before the car needs gas!"

Stephen P., FL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"noise level tolerable but could be better. Steering of this model has been improved in later models. The 2009 is not a relaxing drive on the HI way, you have to constantly steer this model. You can never relax driving on the road."

Paul L., FL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Way too much road noise."

Anonymous, VT (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Ride is smooth, quiet. Car feels solidly connected to the road."

Wendy A., MD (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Generally I'm happy with the ride, the noise level and the temperature controls. As my body ages I realize that my Prius having no lumbar support is a big drawback."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"For a small car, with not so much horsepower, it has plenty of power (never had a situations where I felt I was in danger due to lack of power), ride is solid and handles very well, with very little road or air noise."

Peter L., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Interior materials (seat fabric, other interior materials) low quality/durability and show wear. Considerable interior and road noise while driving, especially at highway speeds. Low seats and ride."

Lawrence E., IA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"There is considerable road noise and somewhat harsh ride."

Bruce J., WI (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Excessive road noise"

Bruce H., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Seat comfort is okay but the suspension is stiff (feel every bump). Getting noisy with age."

Jim L., MA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"noise bothers me sometimes seat is comfortable for me - I do not drive for long periods of time without a stop and stand up- must be careful of acceleration getting on to highway from a stopped position, has been improved in later models"

Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Noise and ride are fine. My issue is with the comfort of the seats. I find that the seat makes me curl into a fetal type position over time which leaves me with neck and shoulder pain after long (2hr+) drives."

Jonathan C., NH (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Reasonably peppy and rides well at highway speeds; smooth transmission shifting; don't care for around-town mileage and effective use of battery rather than engine"

Jack G., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Only limited manual seat adjustments; no seat height adjustment; ride is not great, but typical for a small car."

Anonymous, MI (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The Prius is very noisy in the rear seat. It rumbles badly. The front seats are OK for around town, but not for a long trip. You can barely walk after sitting in them for a couple of hours."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Easy to get in and out. Much more comfortable on longer trips than the E350. After 2 hours you can get out and walk and not be all hunched over"

Philip S., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Handling could be tauter. Engine is noisy when under strain. Road noise is fairly low, especially when the gas and electric engines are in sync. Seats are comfortable but I could use more legroom in the drivers seat. With seat all the way back it feels like one or two notches less than what I need."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The Prius will be 10 years old in October 2018 and although it was very quiet when moving during the first five years, it has developed a variety of rubbing noises and squeaks over the years. The noises are worse in cold weather and usually soften after the car warms up. There is another noise in the door locking system and it is too expensive to replace parts. The door stops have weakened over the years and no longer hold the driver's door open when the car is parked on a slight slope or in a breeze. The hatch hinges have been lubricated several time a year for squealing and now, they don't hold the hatch open as far as originally. The ride is busy and noisy, it is necessary to turn the radio volume up to hear, when driving on the freeway. At city speeds, this isn't much of a problem. We had after-market leather installed at purchase and it is fine."

Bergen T., OR (2009 Toyota Prius)

"While it is quiet and mostly comfortable, the width of the legroom is tight along the door. The controls and interior handle could have been higher so your knee does not rest against them."

Clement S., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Road noise is a little higher than I expected, but still a good value for the price I paid"

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Ride is smooth and quiet. Driver's seat very comfortable for lower back. Gas mileage is a boon."

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Seats erect and comfy on long drives. Tire/road noise is higher than I'd like."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"For a relatively small car, it is remarkably comfortable in both front and rear seats. Likewise, it is relatively quiet and has adequate acceleration for passing when needed."

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The seats, front and back are comfortable; leg room in the back is good. Noise levels are tolerable but could be better. After 168950 miles the ride on bumpy roads is not the best."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The car is a little noisy but the seats are comfortable for both the driver and passenger."

Ted F., AZ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Just fun to ride and even more enjoyable to drive. Son used the car over the summer and fell in love with it!"

Anonymous, IN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Seats are not as comfortable as I would like. Road and CVT noise can get fairly loud. The ride is fine, but there is a lot of body roll. That said, the cabin is really quite nice for a compact car, and feels roomy for the dimensions."

Brent E., WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"As the car has aged it has become very noisy to ride in. We avoid taking it on longer trips."

Micheal L., OR (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Seat does not go back far enough for my long legs."

Richard F., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Love the comfort of the seats (I have leather) and the handling of the car. Have new Michelin Defender tires, and ride is quiet."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The stand out dissatisfaction I have with this car is road noise that makes listening to music or even conversation difficult. I would say it is the only reason that I would consider looking for a different model when I replace the car."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Seats better than 2012 model we have. Noise is a bit of problem ride is OK"

Anonymous, OH (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Not for long trips. Very uncomfortable. Around town is not a problem."

Anonymous, OK (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The noise level has increased considerably since I first purchased this vehicle (used). I think it is mostly in the tires. At least I plan to purchase some new tires to not only run more miles but hopefully reduce the noise level."

Paul G., AZ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I'm getting older and am feeling how thin the seats are more and more. The road noise is an issue, regardless of the tires. I have been considering a different car because of these issues and the associated discomfort."

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota Prius)

"For a small car, it has a good amount of room in both front and back seats. It's fairly quiet and smooth ride."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The driver seat is very uncomfortable"

Anonymous, NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It's noisy and has lots of body roll around corners. Strong winds really shove the car around in the lane."

Anonymous, MA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Seating is not that comfortable for long trips. Maybe related to the package/model we purchased?"

Ronald E., GA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Great mileage & an excellent commuter car. All we’vehad To do is change the oil & tires. Long trips are almost painful on the seat & road noise is abundant."

Daniel C., GA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"As the car gas aged, the noise level of wind and tire noise has increased. The seats are still satisfactory. We notice the road bumps a bit more, but road care in our area has gotten worse. The car suspension is probably not as good and we are older. At the moment we have no plans to change."

Douglas, NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"gas, multifunctional, love it"

J G., VA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"excellent value and easy to handle in city parking and traffic. bright exterior light makes reading the center panel difficult and must shade it with my hand. Also must crack windows and use sun shade on wind shield when ever parking on hot day!!"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I bought this for an auction price from the dealer because they wanted to move it. It was a great value and has been very reliable."

DENNIS M., OH (2009 Toyota Prius)

"LOVE it--never had any problems--just change oil, rotate tires, add gasoline and I am good to go!"

JANET C., LA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"We wanted a high mileage vehicle and the Toyota Prius filled the bill. We love buying gas only once or twice a month."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The gas mileage and the reliability is excellent."

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"First, the value was wonderful because the dealer really wanted the 2003 mercedes C230 Kompressor we didn;t want. The mileage is so much better, too. But the best part is the lack of repairs needed and, when the infrequent repairs are needed, the cost is lower."

KATHY S., VA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The Prius is a nice car to drive and is very responsive. It seats up to 5 people comfortably. It gets up to 50 mpg at speeds up to 60 mph."

JOHN S., AB (2009 Toyota Prius)

"MPG is the biggest thing, averaging real world driving 47, sometimes 50. Basic Maintenance (tires, brakes, oil changes) not too expensive and can be DIY"

JAMES G., NC (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Low cost for such a solid high-mileage car. Very few problem as we approach 200K miles"

PHILIP G., MA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It is a great car, with great gas mileage, I will buy another one,"

BRIAN H., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"45-50 mpg"

SCOTT P., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I bought this vehicle with the expectation of $4.00 and higher prices for gasoline. I should have purchased another vehicle without all the HYBRID features."

DAVID H., MI (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I have only replaced the tires, wipers, some lights and the water pump in seven years of ownership. Including the great fuel mileage, the value is fantastic."

WILLIAM M., WI (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Great gas millage ... really 50 miles per gallon with over 175,000 ... serviced every 5k, dealer charges $30 to change oil/filter ;complete diagnostics in writing; tires rotated (we buy tires from dealer on sale) and a car wash! Dealer gives lifetime warranty (at no additional cost) used this to replace water pump... still on original breaks ... I changed the original 12 volt battery myself (175k, 7years) because I found it was at 10.2 volts BUT the car started just fine ... Other than schedule"

LINDA D., TN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"It has been very economical to operate but I did have the misfortune to purchase it during high gasoline prices and hence a long wait time and no discount from the sticker price."

STEVE K., LA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Gets better than the promised fuel economy both on the road and in town. Have made several coast to coast trips in it with ease. Automatic climate control works well and was standard."

JUDITH M., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I am surprised at the low maintainance costs."

TIMOTHY C., MN (2009 Toyota Prius)

HANK M., IN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Great gas mileage"

MICHAEL B., IA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"This is my husband's car and his biggest concern is gas mileage. We are both delighted with the gas mileage the Prius delivers. The rear deck is very convenient for hauling luggage and other odd shaped purchases. It is our "go to" car in most instances when we're out together."

B S., WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Have had no problems and love the far."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Too complicated navigation system."

"Gas mileage, reliability"

Odin C., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I have been very pleased with this car; it is comfortable, has a suprising amount of people/cargo space, and superb mileage (which is what I bought it for--lifetime of 53 mpg (that's real miles divided by gallons, not the car's slightly optimistic readout)."

Anonymous, IN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"as a somewhat early adopter to the hybrid am satisfied that it has delivered on its promise"

Michael K., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Inexpensive and reliable - had it for eight years without any major problems, inexpensive to maintain. Saved a lot of money because of great gas mileage."

Timothy P., MN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The Prius has been the best value of any car we have purchased. We purchased it for my daughter to drive back and forth to college (8 hours away) and it has been extremely reliable, she has had no major or minor repairs other than routine maintenance. We have saved so much in gasoline it has more than paid for itself. The only issue she has had is the center consul latch has broken so it won't stay shut but the latch can't be replaced without replacing the entire consul. Road noise is loud."

Anonymous, SC (2009 Toyota Prius)

"At the time of purchase it was the most fuel efficient car with a reasonable comfort level in the price range."

Anonymous, NC (2009 Toyota Prius)

"cost of operating has been very cheap--minimal repairs and minimal gas costs"

Anonymous, CT (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Almost 100,000 miles and it is still running great and still getting 44mpg."

Bonnie L., VA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"For what was available at the time, we were & have been pleased with our Prius."

David G., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"We have always had good mileage and the car has held up well."

Donald S., MD (2009 Toyota Prius)

"At time of purchase, the Prius was in high demand, so the value was in the prospect of using less gas. That has played out well, especially when the driver employs some hypermiling techniques (lighter foot on the accelerator, coasting down hills, etc.). Gas tank only needs filling every 2-3 weeks, so much savings in gas costs."

Jean C., MN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Knock on wood, 127K miles, no tune-up yet, no new brakes, no engine problems, 1 or two 12 volt batteries, headlight and taillight bulbs in 8.5 yrs. Period, nothing. Want to talk about value. Regular oil changes, tires etc. I have have never babied this car and the acceleration is second to none."

John T., FL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Best designed car I have ever owned. Hybrid operation is remarkable."

Anonymous, IN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Good price on sale at the time of purchase and holds its value."

Anonymous, CO (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Value is what a Prius is all about. When I can go from home in Florida to Tennessee without having to fill up, that's great. And I've spent next to nothing on maintenance during the time I've had it."

Stephen P., FL (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The Handling is excellent and so is the mileage. Also we have not had a problem with any breakdowns or repairs other than normal maintenance. I bought this car new in 2009 . When I buy another (one which I will) I'm upgrading the electronics."

Kathie M., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

Randolph D., PA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Bad Seat comfort & noise. Best Value & MPG"

Bruce B., WA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I'm very happy with this vehicle. When/if I buy another, I would purchase the larger model with more room for luggage, since we often travel with 1-2 dogs. My husband is a big guy, so he doesn't appreciate the Prius like I do. I'm petite so I love the fit and reliability of Hondas and Toyotas."

Marilyn M., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Great on mileage. No big problems in this 8-year-old car. Small enough on the outside, but roomy feel inside. Split rear seat is very helpful."

Elizabeth M., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The gas mileage is outstanding. We frequently get 57 mpg during the spring/summer/early fall season. After 95000 miles, we just had to replace the starter battery. Tires had to be replaced a bit sooner than we had expected."

Anonymous, MN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I have had NO repairs needed other than routine maintenance (tires, occasional headlight, filters, etc.)"

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The car cost $24,000 after rebates and has been reliable for 9 years. It gets amazing gas mileage. The trunk has enough room for shopping and my manual wheelchair. It’s safe and comfortable. We’ve been on long trips, short commutes and work commutes of an hour. We love it"

Stephen P., PE (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Prius cost mid $20K on the road. Car has been very reliable and hasn't needed anything more then maintenance items. Mileage has decreased this year but we put new tires on and that may have caused the decrease in mpg"

Tracy B., PA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Basically, you get good transportation, room for people and space for cargo, at a reasonable price. People are favorable with our mileage. Many major repairs were covered by warranty."

Douglas, NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"dependability- it has never had a mechanical problem."

Warren B., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"This car has been a work-horse. I've used it for hauling mulch, making long trips, daily 3 hour commuting, loading kayaks. Until it reached 250,000 miles, it had no major problems, a couple minor problems, and was easily maintained. I have been delighted with the reliability of this car. Now, at 255,000 miles, it needs a head gasket replaced. We will have to replace the whole engine because of the problems inherent in replacing a head gasket. But we are seriously considering doing that engine replacement because the car is in otherwise such good condition. Though the BlueBook value may be low because of he number of miles it has on it, it has been and still is a valuable asset to us."

Mark-Nancy P., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The Prius isn't much to look at, but it's been very reliable and economical to drive."

George S., CO (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Great gas mileage and no mechanical problems in 9 years of use. Still accelerates and handles as it did the first year."

"I have spent $20 on a fuel fill-up only a handful of times during our Prius' 10-year tenure. I have carried 700-pound loads of decorative rock [and mulch] dozens of times. This car is so reliable that I am waiting to replace it with a totally ELECTRIC vehicle."

Richard S., OH (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Awesome value. Excellent mileage, good handling, very dependable car with low maintenance costs."

Ronald E., GA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Considering the car has 220,000 miles, and is 9 years old, and I haven't had a major repair, and the battery seems to sill be good, I think the value is very good to excellent."

Peter L., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"Unbelievable value in that I purchased when fuel prices were low and even received a rebate. Have consistently received superior fuel mileage and absolutely no repair costs so the saving may have paid for the vehicle itself!"

D G., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)

"The car is dependable and is likely to give several years more service"

Anonymous, OR (2009 Toyota Prius)

"This car has been a great buy. Other than routine dealer maintenance every 5k that runs 40 bucks for oil change, filter, tire rotation and a car wash you have little additional expense (add a $15 air filter once a year and tires every 50k/60k miles) . We still average 48 MPG after 220K miles!"

Anonymous, TN (2009 Toyota Prius)

"There has been no repair on the car in 9 years of ownership. Still has original brakes."

I S., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)

"We drive a lot of miles, so the investment was worth it for the hybrid mileage. We have had very few repairs, but when the center touchscreen that controls audio and climate died after 8 years, it was too expensive to replace (thousands of dollars) & was unrepairable locally. So we have had to drive without those controls which has been difficult. We are also concerned that when the hybrid battery finally dies, that will be the end of the car because we do not intend to invest thousands of dollars in a replacement battery."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota Prius)

RUSSELL M., MO (2009 Toyota Prius)

"I wish the interior was a little more comfortable. All vinyl, with hard seats. Prius needs to get all of this a little better looking and feeling to attract more people. My niece did not buy one only because of the interior."
