The Prius is the most economical five-passenger car that doesn't have to be plugged in. In our tests it averaged 44 mpg overall, and 55 mpg on the highway. With light throttle input it can drive on electric power up to 25 mph. The ride is firm yet steady, and handling is sound and secure although not particularly agile. Road noise is pronounced. The interior is roomy and the driving position has improved, but some controls take a bit of getting used to. Reliability is well above average. A plug-in version is now available and can cover around 12 to 15 miles solely on electricity. When the electric range is depleted the Plug-in operates like a normal Prius, alternating between gas and electric modes.
