Our top-rated small SUV, the RAV4 is available only as a four-door, the current version manages to be a little roomier than its forebear without being much larger outside. The RAV4's flexible, well-laid-out interior includes a rear seat that lets you fold and remove each half. There's still no V6, but the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine picked up a much-needed 20-hp boost, and now provides adequate performance.

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Had blue smoke on start up. Replaced EGR but it didn't solve problem. Turned out to be leaking valve gasket. Dealer said it was minor problem that didn't need fixing, so I've not done anything about it"

Anonymous, CA (2002 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"had to replace catalytic converter"

Anonymous, CA (2002 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Catalytic converter turns on the check engine light indicating it needs to be replaced, but it doesn't because the car passes emission testing. So my check engine light is always on rendering it worthless"

Anonymous, CO (2002 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"O2 sensor heating element failed"

Anonymous, CA (2002 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Replace all oxygen sensors and catalyst converter"

"old and not working properly"

Anonymous, FL (2002 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Fuel cap

"The fuel intake tube needed to be replaced and the cap because the emissions says there is a leak. The mechanic spent many hours trying to find the small evaporation leak, but could not. So, I am careful to not top-off when I fill the tank. That seems to keep the emissions/check engine light off"

Eugene F., MD (2002 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Fuel injection system

""Check Engine" light due to fuel injectors needing replacement"

Anonymous, CA (2002 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"O2 Sensors seems to fail quickly and need replacing often. (Two banks of sensors)"

Peter M., MA (2002 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I have had to replace O2 sensors nearly a half dozen times. I don't know why, other than they were not working and then obviously causing other malfunctions."

Anonymous, CA (2002 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"check engine light on - findings were oxygen sensor failure - car was running fine"

Anonymous, (2002 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, WA (2002 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Check Engine Light warned of the issue. Not unexpected because of the age of the car"

Anonymous, KY (2002 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Check engine light on, need 2 new O2 sensors and catalytic converter--seems like too much to spend on 14 yr old car"
