Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

“v6 engine has good acceleration”

JOHN S., NJ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“accleration”

M M., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“the acceleration is choppy sometime...sometimes I do well with acceleration (0-60)and sometimes there is no pep atall.. it seems clunky..or i feel a surge my 2003 corolla did not so that..always had pep”

LYNNE W., IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Acceleration is great, handling could be better.”

Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“I like the strong acceleration with the v-6 engine. I have considered the new RAV4 but won't purchase without a v-6. Handling is great.”

KENNETH K., TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“A bit underpowered when driving in the mountains. Else, OK.”

MATT L., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The V6 engine is a rocket and with 269 hp accelerates quickly but under normal driving, will still return very good fuel economy.”

Anonymous, AB (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“I hadn't realized I'd sacrifice as much fuel economy with the 6 cylinder engine. Having said that, it's a very strong engine with great pickup.”

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“I have the V-6 engine! Rocket on wheels when necessary!”

Anonymous, AZ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Vehicle has run flat tires which result in very stiff ride. Live in a rural area and I'm always concerned about having a flat tire with no spare.”

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Jerky acceleratipn”

Anonymous, FL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Very good acceleration. Handles very good”

TOM B., MN (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The V6 is somewhat of a pocket rocket. I like it but I notice that my wife has developed a heavy foot. However, the 4 cylinder RAV 4 and the Forester accelerated too slow.”

ANDY J., PA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“My Rav4 has a V6 engine, so the acceleration is terrific. Too bad Toyota doesn't make it for the new Rav.”

HUGH H., ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The RAV4 has remarkably quick acceleration, and handles very well, surprisingly so for SUV. Also pulls my 3500 lb boat with no difficulty.”

DANIEL B., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Driver's seat needed custom cushions added to fix the side pressure on my hips and the too aggressive headrest that forced me to hunch.”

Anonymous, MN (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Up high. Turns easy. Not too much blind spots”

Anonymous, BC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Acceleration pedal is very touchy. I feel like the car surges forward suddenly with the slightest touch of my foot. I don't like to drive this vehicle for this reason.”

MICHELE S., NH (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“My RAV4 had a V6 engine which is very sweet to drive, lots of low end grunt, smooth through the revs, quiet on the road, overall fine drive with enough power for everyday use”

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Good suv”

HECTOR M., NS (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Has tremendous pick-up and love this car for that.”

FRANCIS H., MO (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“A bit sluggish accelerating but handles well”

HARVEY K., ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Acceleration is adequate. Must be careful on wet roads when negotiating a curve.”

“it accelerates as fast as a Porsche Cayenne of a similar year (0-60 in 6.9 seconds)”

Anonymous, MI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“I covered this in the previous screen”

BRUCE E., WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The only negative is the very touchy gas pedal.”

Anonymous, AB (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“VERY fast”

TIM R., WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“the v-6 has lots of power. the ride is OK for an SUV”

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“My wife really enjoys the acceleration and performance of her RAV 4. The only knock I have on this vehicle is a constant whine from the transmission at low speeds. It has been present ever since we purchased the vehicle - every now and then the transmission thumps between gears typically under deceleration or down hill. I've anticipated at some point we would have to replace it, but so far its still working @ 160k miles.”

CHARLES I., GA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Acceleration is excellent. When we need the power, it is there.”

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Very noisey”

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Acceleration is great.!”

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“A real hot rod with the V6. I call it my rice rocket.”

DAVE L., NC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The RAV4 had the best steering feel and handling of any of the compact SUV's I tested at the time. It still is a very pleasant drive on demanding roads, with enough power, decent body control (for an SUV) and good feedback to enjoy driving it.”

GUSTAVO B., OR (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“it moves when I need it to move”

Anonymous, NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“It is a rocket with all wheel drive...amazing...”

JAMES L., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The acceleration from low-speed of the 2.5L 4 cylinder is a bit weak.”

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“sports car handling plus usv convenience”

Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Lots of power”

Anonymous, AB (2009 Toyota RAV4)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“The car drives and handles well, but I am somewhat disappointed with the level of road noise.”

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The ride is very noisy especially on the highway (mostly wind noise, but some tire noise even with quiet tires). The ride is also harsh even though the suspension is very soft (as in the car has a lot of body roll).”

HECTOR R., TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“It's a good car but my wife finds the seats extremely uncomfortable”

VINCENT M., MA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“not enough leg room”

Anonymous, AZ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Seat gives me a backache. Headrest in wrong place, too.”

GEORGE M., OK (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“driving position”

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“had to replace both front hub bearings”

JAMES O., VA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“back seats uncomfortable, back head rests are too short for tall people”

Anonymous, NC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Manufacturers try to please drivers located in every region of the earth. However, in locations where temperatures reach 120 degrees, rear passengers suffer the most from lack of hvac ventilation. There is very little road noise, which is a comfort to me. It's an indicator when another vehicle has accelerated near by and I am cautious not to change lanes.”

ALBERT O., AZ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Noise. I added in door acoustic dampening material to quiet some.”

PAUL R., VA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Spare tire rattles.”

Anonymous, MB (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The front seats are not comfortable”

CAROLE H., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Good = I like sitting up high. Like the acceleration of a V6 Bad = Passengar seat not comfortable for wife on long road trips”

Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“This vehicle has the V6 engine and is peppy and fun to drive. It is, however, noisy and at interstate speeds it is hard to listen to music without having to ramp up the volume uncomfortably.”

Anonymous, NC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The adjustable/heated seats are awsome”

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Auto climate control is uncomfortable particularly in hot weather. Center vents cannot be turned off and have limited redirection. Also the re-circulation comes on full blast as default. Blast of frigid air in the chest and head. Cabin is pretty noisy too.”

Anonymous, MB (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“AC could be a little stronger. Ride is a bit noisy on highway. Stereo system not too good. Great storage space for trips.”

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“It's a bit noisy but I didn't expect the same comfort that I would have gotten with a much more expensive vehicle. I got what I paid for.”

DELCIE L., ND (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The passenger window went off track so I went to the dealer. After 2 hours they said that the window was off because the door was bent and the car had to go to a body shop (they charged me $100). The body shop said the door was fine, the piece that was bent was part of the window mechanism (cost me $100). A friend spent 1 hour to straighten the bent piece (cost 1 case of beer).”

DANIEL B., WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Lots of wind noise”

Anonymous, CO (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Very comfortable Seats that contour to my back. Excellent and very smooth ride that is quiet and smooth. Climate Control is simple to use and placed in a good location.”

LEE M., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“i wish there were more temp options for the heated seats they can get very hot for me..I am pleased with the comfort”

LYNNE W., IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“no lumbar support”

MARY G., CT (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“A little harsh”

DAVE L., NC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“rear door opens to the side like you guys said that is not good”

Anonymous, NC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Seating is comfortable with electric . Dual climate settings useful.”

Anonymous, FL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The 4 cylinder is a bit buzzy on the highway. AC for heat and cool works well.”

RANDALL K., ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“A bit noisy...engine and road noise.”

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Sport model did not have wheel controls or bluetooth but I added bluetooth.Seat on driver's side has all controls but wife rides as passenger and wishes to have controls on passenger seat. Ride a little firm but I realize it has good carrying capacity and high towing capacity which requires heavier suspension. As I do not like cvvt, electric power steering or direct injection unless I am driving highway regularly and will miss the 3.5 V6 I would have a difficult time finding a new car as the new”

S W., ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“good seats and options limited”

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“A little behind in terms of technology. No backup camera, no connectivity at the time of purchased (2009)”

Anonymous, VA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“I love absolutely everything about my RAV EXCEPT the seats. They are uncomfortable on trips over 10 miles and I have to use cushions and seat back supports to tolerate them. My husband does as well. This is not the fancy model. I keep thinking about selling it, but it is such a great car otherwise.”

JOHN W., WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“moderate wind and road noise”

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Climate control, bad, it is impossible NOT to have the vents blowing on you as a driver. Should be more adjustable. Will not buy this car again unless the climate controls are redesigned.”

DARLENE B., WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“the road noise is way to much. The ride is a bit stiff but tolerable”

JAMES S., WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Poor lumbar support for longer drives, steering wheel does not telescope far enough.”

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The road noise level is rather high.”

BARRY R., NC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“1. I'm 6'0" tall and there isn't enough leg room in this vehicle - after one hour every thing is sore 2. the gas pedal and brake are too close together. 3. it is a 4 cylinder and it gets very poor fuel economy for it's weight it should have been at least 6 cylinders but probably wouldn't get any better economy.”

BERNARD W., ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“good seats, good driving position, easy to get into fronts seats, lots of room for rear seats when pushed back, great heating and A/C system, quiet on highway, compliant ride but too much lean if driven fast around corners, however never unsafe, always holds the line”

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Noise level. these inexpensive cars have lots of wind and road noise. (but I had a 86 jeep before this so compared to that vehicle the rav is very quiet.) I wish they would make these quieter”

DONALD S., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Noisy ride. Seems to get worse with age. Not quite enough room to be comfortable while driving”

Anonymous, LA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“I specifically bought the V6 version of this car -at the time it was the quickest accelerating SUV of it's size yet still returned acceptable economy. The easy to flaten rear seats make for a very easy to expand cargo area.”

BRUCE E., WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The car is very comfortable to drive. I've taken many trips of over 1000 miles, driving by myself, and was rarely fatigued. Since replacing shocks, tires, and alignment, the ride is even smoother and quieter”

DANIEL B., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Without doubt, the most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned. I can drive for many hours and not feel tired.”

GEORGE M., NJ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“stiff ride and high road noise”

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Very uncomfortable seats for driver and passenger, even for a short drive. Long drives are dreaded.”

JOYCE K., SC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Road noise on highways is high. Quiet passages while playing music can't be heard.”

Anonymous, NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Road noise is terrible”

Anonymous, MI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Noise is a tad loud, but not overpowering. Seats are very comfortable. Ride is very good. I LOVE my Rav!”

ALYSAN A., OH (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Drives somewhat rough-noisey”

MICHAEL S., ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Can not open rear window when driving over 20miles per hour, because of the noise.”

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“seats could use a bit more cushion”

GREG S., AR (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“too much road noise; seats could be softer but I like seating positions and leather”

KENNETH K., TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“I previously owned a Honda CRV. The RAV4 has more comfortable seats in spite of the fact that it is the base model and my Honda was top of the line.”

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Like the visabilltiy riding high...think there is too much road noise.”

JOHN K., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“It is not particularly comfortable riding. The seat belts are at angles that cut into neck/shoulder. The seats themselves are not very body conscious. There is quite a bit of noise making it a bit difficult to carry on conversations throughout the car.”

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The seats are not comfortable. The arm rest on the drivers door is too low and there is not any arm rest for the driver's right arm.”

JOHN J., WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Rear passenger seats are not at all comfortable.”

BRIAN D., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Would like better noise control and a softer ride.”

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“I like the high driving position (compared to a sedan).”

Anonymous, BC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Road noise on highway is bad”

Anonymous, AB (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Cabin noise is fairly pronounced at highway speeds. The housing/panels where the gear box is housed tends to creak and rattle as well. Interior lighting is lacking, especially in the middle/rear of the vehicle in low-light / night conditions.”

GINO L., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The headrest lies too far forward, my head bumps into it often.”

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The seats could be better, and road noise is somewhat high,l have the sport model so the ride is a bit stiff.”

LARRY G., FL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Road noise inside the vehicle makes normal conversation a bit hard. Passengers in rear seats often do not hear well.”

KENNETH G., FL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

“Used Costco buying...walked into dealership and asked if they participate in the Costco buying policy. They said yes. We only had to pay $150.00 over whole sale price...a very good deal. There was no haggling about the price.”

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“I've driven Toyotas all my life because (1) they RARELY need any repairs (this 2009 was an exception - 3 recalls), the visibility is excellent, storage is ample, safety is ample, they have low-speed 4-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive, my choices are nice and small, responsive steering, good mileage (mine is lower now because of all-wheel and 4-wheel drive). DEPENDABLE.”

Anonymous, MI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Does everything well for a family for $23,000 CAD.”

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“For the price I can't think of another vehicle that offers the power, comfort, space and safety of this RAV4. The problem is they no longer offer a V6 engine. I had a 4 cyl RAV4 in the past. It was very slow. I would never buy one without V6 power.”

JAMES L., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Better ride than the Honda CRV I test drove at the time. Better deal for the money too. Roomier in the passenger areas and room in the back to move small furniture and equipment.”

Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Bought car using cash for clunkers”

MARC S., OH (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Toyotas, RAVs particularly, were deemed reliable and dependable and worth the extra money dealers demanded. Immediately after my purchase, Toyotas suffered the accelerator scandal and the value of my new purchase declined precipitously. Following the recall to correct that defect (which may or may not have been a true fault), we have gone through 2 or 3 more recalls (rear seat belt wear, rear suspension corrosion, etc.) and now the Subaru Forester has replaced the RAV as Consumer Report's #1 c”

Anonymous, AB (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Even today very few vehicles match/exceed the spec of the V6 Rav....But their prices are way UP”

PAUL T., BC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Easy to drive, easy to park, has power enough to get up my steep hill (and 4wd is invaluable for my locationF).”

NANCY D., CO (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Basic car. No problems.”

Anonymous, CT (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“With only 58k miles on the vehicle, we expect to use it for at least 1-2 more years. Possibly more.”

CHARLES T., MA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Got it with a trade-in which gave the gas-guzzler $4000. It would have been a good deal without that.”

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“I've spent around 2,500 in repairs in the 8 years (and 125K miles). I consider this reasonable for such an old car.”

HECTOR R., TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“I expect better transmission value than having to spend $5000 to replace at less than 100,000 miles”

ANNE G., VA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“overall a great auto.”

ELWOOD S., MI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Several years of looking into adding this car, from consumer reports and elsewhere, convinced us to buy it. It has met almost all of our expectations. (my wife especially), I still prefer driving my 2002 VW Passat, but it needs replaced. Maybe a BMW 2 series?”

Anonymous, NM (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“I paid premium price for the top of the line accessories most of which I don't use. Need to be careful about price of used Toyota vehicles. I should have used Consumer Reports vehicle purchase guide .”

RONALD C., WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“overall value is excellent! The acceleration is exceptionally good! My complaints are around road noise from the stock tires and in general. Run flat tires are quite noisy, so I switched to regular tires and go without a spare for now.”

LISA B., CO (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The purchase price was very reasonable at the time (not sure that is still the case for newer versions), it was well equipped. It's a great travel car, has room for adult passengers and lots of luggage comfortably. The RAV4 has proven to be super reliable. Toyota had a few recalls, but other than that it hasn't needed anything beyond regular maintenance.”

GUSTAVO B., OR (2009 Toyota RAV4)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

“The size is perfect. Love the side open back door and spare mounted on rear of car. All the things I love they changed in later models.”

PAT H., TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Am over all happy except it was a fast needed purchase and didn't think about the how the back door opened. Would rather had the hatch back then a door”

Anonymous, MA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Very functional interior that is comfortable on longer drives.”

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“like the way it looks”

M M., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Design outside spare tire”

Anonymous, QC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Cabin space is awesome for hauling large and oversized stuff.”

GINO L., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Mostly OK. Don't care for the rear door style of the hatch. Glad style changes made for later models.”

RONALD C., WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The inside of the RAV4 is larger inside and better appointed than the Honda CRV I owned. Again, the RAV4 is the base mode; the Honda was the XLT, top of the line.”

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Bad: 1. Road noise. 2. Extended warranty price jockeying. 3. Drive shaft coupling. 4. Toyota plans to eliminate spare tire and provide can of fix-a-flat per dealership salesman. Good: 1. Comfort. 2. Electronics accessibility. 3. Cargo space. 4. External rear tire.”

Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Noisy”

KIM N., IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“The RAV is boring to drive but very functional. Lots of space for carrying bikes and gear. Spare tire on baack holds bikes. rack on top for kayaks and roof box. Great SUV for active lifestyle”

RICHARD F., NH (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Like styling, handles well in snow, lots of room to haul material to the cottage or shopping purches”

HARVEY K., ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

“Looks good. Lousy mileage V6”

TOM B., MN (2009 Toyota RAV4)
