The RAV4 is a well-rounded package, combining good all-around performance with a comfortable ride and agile handling. Its engine gets impressive fuel economy and an optional third-row bench was offered to bring seating to seven in a pinch. Cabin furnishings include straightforward controls, a roomy rear seat, and generous cargo space (with the tiny third row folded).

What Owners Say

"v6 engine has good acceleration"

JOHN S., NJ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"accleration"

M M., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"the acceleration is choppy sometime...sometimes I do well with acceleration (0-60)and sometimes there is no pep atall.. it seems clunky..or i feel a surge my 2003 corolla did not so that..always had pep"

LYNNE W., IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration is great, handling could be better."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"I like the strong acceleration with the v-6 engine. I have considered the new RAV4 but won't purchase without a v-6. Handling is great."

KENNETH K., TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"A bit underpowered when driving in the mountains. Else, OK."

MATT L., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The V6 engine is a rocket and with 269 hp accelerates quickly but under normal driving, will still return very good fuel economy."

Anonymous, AB (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"I hadn't realized I'd sacrifice as much fuel economy with the 6 cylinder engine. Having said that, it's a very strong engine with great pickup."

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"I have the V-6 engine! Rocket on wheels when necessary!"

Anonymous, AZ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Vehicle has run flat tires which result in very stiff ride. Live in a rural area and I'm always concerned about having a flat tire with no spare."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Jerky acceleratipn"

Anonymous, FL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Very good acceleration. Handles very good"

TOM B., MN (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The V6 is somewhat of a pocket rocket. I like it but I notice that my wife has developed a heavy foot. However, the 4 cylinder RAV 4 and the Forester accelerated too slow."

ANDY J., PA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"My Rav4 has a V6 engine, so the acceleration is terrific. Too bad Toyota doesn't make it for the new Rav."

HUGH H., ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The RAV4 has remarkably quick acceleration, and handles very well, surprisingly so for SUV. Also pulls my 3500 lb boat with no difficulty."

DANIEL B., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Driver's seat needed custom cushions added to fix the side pressure on my hips and the too aggressive headrest that forced me to hunch."

Anonymous, MN (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Up high. Turns easy. Not too much blind spots"

Anonymous, BC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration pedal is very touchy. I feel like the car surges forward suddenly with the slightest touch of my foot. I don't like to drive this vehicle for this reason."

MICHELE S., NH (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"My RAV4 had a V6 engine which is very sweet to drive, lots of low end grunt, smooth through the revs, quiet on the road, overall fine drive with enough power for everyday use"

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Good suv"

HECTOR M., NS (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Has tremendous pick-up and love this car for that."

FRANCIS H., MO (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"A bit sluggish accelerating but handles well"

HARVEY K., ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration is adequate. Must be careful on wet roads when negotiating a curve."

LARRY B., OH (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"it accelerates as fast as a Porsche Cayenne of a similar year (0-60 in 6.9 seconds)"

Anonymous, MI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"I covered this in the previous screen"

BRUCE E., WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The only negative is the very touchy gas pedal."

Anonymous, AB (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"VERY fast"

TIM R., WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"the v-6 has lots of power. the ride is OK for an SUV"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"My wife really enjoys the acceleration and performance of her RAV 4. The only knock I have on this vehicle is a constant whine from the transmission at low speeds. It has been present ever since we purchased the vehicle - every now and then the transmission thumps between gears typically under deceleration or down hill. I've anticipated at some point we would have to replace it, but so far its still working @ 160k miles."

CHARLES I., GA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration is excellent. When we need the power, it is there."

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Very noisey"

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration is great.!"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"A real hot rod with the V6. I call it my rice rocket."

DAVE L., NC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The RAV4 had the best steering feel and handling of any of the compact SUV's I tested at the time. It still is a very pleasant drive on demanding roads, with enough power, decent body control (for an SUV) and good feedback to enjoy driving it."

GUSTAVO B., OR (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"It is a rocket with all wheel drive...amazing..."

JAMES L., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"it moves when I need it to move"

Anonymous, NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The acceleration from low-speed of the 2.5L 4 cylinder is a bit weak."

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"sports car handling plus usv convenience"

Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Lots of power"

Anonymous, AB (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Great acceleration, comfortable ride"

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The acceleration is not the best but the engine is not that large. The automatic shift smoothly but occasionally is sluggish to downshift when I need more power."

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Continuing problem with starter system. Sometimes the car won't start and the only way to get it to start is to hold the key fob over the start button. It doesn't matter if car or weather is warm or cold."

Diana D., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"This car has a short wheelbase and is easy to park in tight parking lots. The engine is a little small for big city traffic but adequate at highway speeds."

Eddy H., TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Good acceleration"

Anonymous, OH (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Fun to drive with plenty of power. Have to get used to handling then comfortable with it. 130kmph on winding freeway is no problem for the v6."

Anonymous, BC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The RAV4 has excellent visibility and decent acceleration. But the gas pedal is extremely sensitive when accelerating from a stop. There is so much road noise that we turn the radio off on the highway."

Michael C., VA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Powerful acceleration and solid driving experience"

Anonymous, KS (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Given the size of the vehicle, it drives and handles well. Could use more gears or a taller overdrive for highway use. Engine power is adequate."

Randall K., ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"great acceleration"

Roseanne P., FL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Great to drive. Excellent visibility. Accelerates quickly and maneuvers very well. Great in snow and on ice."

Donald H., IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"It has a V6 and the acceleration is great. It is a light vehicle and to have a V6 powering it, the SUV really moves out and has a lot of extra power."

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"I have the V-6 engine. Gets almost as good gas mileage as 4 cylinder but with lots of horsepower. Only issue is when you accelerate hard a turn quickly (like passing a car) the steering can get a little scary. Almost too much power for a front wheel drive vehicle but this extra power is great for towing."

Franklin W., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Exceptional acceleration and handling Most fun to drive car I have EVER had.. Love it."

Grady F., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"good acceleration and handling."

Mark W., WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Excellent blend of acceleration, handling, braking, steering, driver comfort. Rock solid stability engenders high level of safety and driver confidence. Superb quality and durability."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Very quick and handles very well for an SUV"

Anonymous, BC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Great pick-up, easy to accelerate quickly when needing to."

Francis H., MO (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"have had to replace battery 3 times. otherwise has been most reliable and dependable in bad weather"

John P., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"I have the V-6 version and LOVE that is accelerates when I need it. It turns in a relatively small radius so it's easy to get around tight places. Just wish it had a little more noise suppression. On the highway, it gets a bit noisy."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Poor handling, braking on icy roads"

Anonymous, NM (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Great exceleration Handles good but not as good as a Subaru Like the mileage even it has a v6 engine"

Joe B., NC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"I was advised to buy the 4 Cylinder engine when buying this car and this advice has turned out to be correct. The car with this engine and power train handles very well, has good power to run the air conditioner and other accessories, maintains good acceleration throughout various drivers scenarios, and has excellent economy."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"This vehicle is fun to drive. My wife drove it for years to work and now we use it mainly around town and short trips. We bought it new in 2009 and they don't make them like this any more."

James B., MO (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The acceleration if response is very good. It handles with smooth response"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Every thing is good except the transmission......it vibrates excessively just before the shift at about 30 mph....doesn't seem to shift soon enough.....dealer has been asked to look at it numerous times and always says "meets factory specs.""

Anonymous, FL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The accelerator is very sensitive. I always have to start out with gentle pressure in the accelerator. Otherwise it accelerates to abruptly."

Steven F., MD (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"lots of pwer"

Elizabeth D., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Excellent acceleration (has V-6), and handling is good for a SUV"

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration and handling good. Might turn tighter."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"It is very good in avoidance maneuvers, very stable when cornering, acceleration is surprisingly good for a 4-cylinder this heavy. The brakes are only average."

Anonymous, GA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"This was the best driving small SUV at the time, and after driving newer models, it still stands out as a very good driving vehicle. It has good feedback from the steering, something rare these days, it handles well and the ride is comfortable. It is a bit noisy, especially on NW roads that are rougher than most due to the common use of winter tires."

Gustavo B., OR (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"the rav4 acceleration very good drives very good for a suv"

Kelly W., IN (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Handling is very good, more like a car than a truck. Acceleration is adequate."

Anonymous, GA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

Anonymous, BC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Plenty of pep for a 4-banger. Sporty handling, easy to control."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"This is a zippy car. It handles well and feels nimble when you drive it."

Michael T., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The seats are not comfortable. It was the last year Toyota included a V6. It is really peppy. However, being peppy cuts down on gas MPG's."

David D., AZ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Truly remarkable for the size and design of the vehicle. It's quite good for a 4-cylinder suv"

Anonymous, NE (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Good acceleration and handling. No issues."

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Smooth, powerful acceleration. Fun to drive."

Robert R., OR (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The response to the accelerator is abrupt on take-off from a stop. After that it's fine. The suspension has always been rough over bumps and potholes. Also the handling is quite sluggish. Feels like a bus. My 2001 RAV4 was shorter and handled much better. With it I had one emergency avoidance manoeuvre when a car was coming at me and the older RAV swerved very competently."

Anonymous, BC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Handles fairly well. Some road noise."

Kelly P., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration is average. I expected better from a 6 cylinder engine."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"a very "peppy" SUV. a good balance of power and gearing for a "value" SUV"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"It has a v6 and the acceleration is great."

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Even after 9 years, the engine and transmission in this vehicle respond perfectly. No bogging, no slips, just a perfect driving experience. Accelerates quickly and smoothly."

Marcia M., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration is a little bit slow from a dead-stop, especially compared to Mazda's. If I had a chance to do over, I would have gotten the v6 model instead. Otherwise, it's been a good car."

Gino L., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The RAV4 has great pickup, and when I've driven it on 4WD roads in the mountains I've been pleasantly surprised at how rugged it is. I wish it got better gas mileage, though."

Anonymous, CO (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Great acceleration w/ 3.5 V6, but due to recall (the left rear strut was glued into a single position) the rear end has a less sporty response to turns etc."

Anonymous, AZ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Great acceleration, we have the 6 cylinder engine, with reasonable gas mileage."

Alfred W., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"When I bought the car it was great - great acceleration. But soon after I bought it, there was some type of recall needed and it really affected how smooth it accelerated- still had power but was very jerky. I have gotten used to it over the years, but when my husband or son drive it they always comment."

Eric R., IN (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"I call it my sports car SUV. I love the way it handles, has great acceleration, and handles like a dream."

Helen B., TX (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"THIS CAR IS VERY RESPONSIVE. ITS NOT FAST LIKE A SPORTS CAR BUT IT IS QUICK ENOUGH FOR EVERYDAY DRIVING IN THE CITY."

"The 2009 Rav 4 has a quick pickup for merging on short highway ramps. The handling is responsive and takes little effort."

Kenneth T., PA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

Colleen K., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The car handles well and when needed the acceleration is excellent."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"I have the V6 and it is fantastic. Unfortunately they don't put it in the RAV4 anymore, so I plan on keeping it as long as it makes sense."

What Owners Say

"The car drives and handles well, but I am somewhat disappointed with the level of road noise."

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The ride is very noisy especially on the highway (mostly wind noise, but some tire noise even with quiet tires). The ride is also harsh even though the suspension is very soft (as in the car has a lot of body roll)."

"Manufacturers try to please drivers located in every region of the earth. However, in locations where temperatures reach 120 degrees, rear passengers suffer the most from lack of hvac ventilation. There is very little road noise, which is a comfort to me. It's an indicator when another vehicle has accelerated near by and I am cautious not to change lanes."

ALBERT O., AZ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

Anonymous, NC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The adjustable/heated seats are awsome"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Auto climate control is uncomfortable particularly in hot weather. Center vents cannot be turned off and have limited redirection. Also the re-circulation comes on full blast as default. Blast of frigid air in the chest and head. Cabin is pretty noisy too."

Anonymous, MB (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"AC could be a little stronger. Ride is a bit noisy on highway. Stereo system not too good. Great storage space for trips."

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"It's a bit noisy but I didn't expect the same comfort that I would have gotten with a much more expensive vehicle. I got what I paid for."

DELCIE L., ND (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The passenger window went off track so I went to the dealer. After 2 hours they said that the window was off because the door was bent and the car had to go to a body shop (they charged me $100). The body shop said the door was fine, the piece that was bent was part of the window mechanism (cost me $100). A friend spent 1 hour to straighten the bent piece (cost 1 case of beer)."

DANIEL B., WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"A bit noisy...engine and road noise."

Anonymous, WI (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Sport model did not have wheel controls or bluetooth but I added bluetooth.Seat on driver's side has all controls but wife rides as passenger and wishes to have controls on passenger seat. Ride a little firm but I realize it has good carrying capacity and high towing capacity which requires heavier suspension. As I do not like cvvt, electric power steering or direct injection unless I am driving highway regularly and will miss the 3.5 V6 I would have a difficult time finding a new car as the new"

S W., ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"A little behind in terms of technology. No backup camera, no connectivity at the time of purchased (2009)"

Anonymous, VA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"I love absolutely everything about my RAV EXCEPT the seats. They are uncomfortable on trips over 10 miles and I have to use cushions and seat back supports to tolerate them. My husband does as well. This is not the fancy model. I keep thinking about selling it, but it is such a great car otherwise."

JOHN W., WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"moderate wind and road noise"

Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

BARRY R., NC (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"1. I'm 6'0" tall and there isn't enough leg room in this vehicle - after one hour every thing is sore 2. the gas pedal and brake are too close together. 3. it is a 4 cylinder and it gets very poor fuel economy for it's weight it should have been at least 6 cylinders but probably wouldn't get any better economy."

BERNARD W., ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"good seats, good driving position, easy to get into fronts seats, lots of room for rear seats when pushed back, great heating and A/C system, quiet on highway, compliant ride but too much lean if driven fast around corners, however never unsafe, always holds the line"

Anonymous, ON (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Noise level. these inexpensive cars have lots of wind and road noise. (but I had a 86 jeep before this so compared to that vehicle the rav is very quiet.) I wish they would make these quieter"

DONALD S., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The car is very comfortable to drive. I've taken many trips of over 1000 miles, driving by myself, and was rarely fatigued. Since replacing shocks, tires, and alignment, the ride is even smoother and quieter"

DANIEL B., NY (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Noisy ride. Seems to get worse with age. Not quite enough room to be comfortable while driving"

Anonymous, LA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"I specifically bought the V6 version of this car -at the time it was the quickest accelerating SUV of it's size yet still returned acceptable economy. The easy to flaten rear seats make for a very easy to expand cargo area."

"Like the visabilltiy riding high...think there is too much road noise."

JOHN K., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"It is not particularly comfortable riding. The seat belts are at angles that cut into neck/shoulder. The seats themselves are not very body conscious. There is quite a bit of noise making it a bit difficult to carry on conversations throughout the car."

Anonymous, IL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

KENNETH G., FL (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"Ride is too rough. Noise is so high, I can't hear the radio without turning it up way too much"

Anonymous, OR (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The seats have relatively bad ergonomics and this appears to be across most toyotas now. The head rest is pitched forward and there is lacking lumbar support. The seats are soft. On long drives all those issues compound to leave you with a ride which requires stops to stretch. I used to have a 1998 Audi A4 with great seats. Not sure how Toyota has made there seats inferior in comparison."

Zachary R., MA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"The ride is stiff and hard. Truck ride. Every little ridge in the pavement jars the whole human body"

"The tires that came with the vehicle had to be replaced before 30,000 miles. As they wore out they caused a great deal of road noise. The car could stand to be about 4 inches longer for tall persons. The inside is cramped making the vehicle okay for in-town use but extremely uncomfortable for any long trips for persons over 6 ft. tall."

"I've driven Toyotas all my life because (1) they RARELY need any repairs (this 2009 was an exception - 3 recalls), the visibility is excellent, storage is ample, safety is ample, they have low-speed 4-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive, my choices are nice and small, responsive steering, good mileage (mine is lower now because of all-wheel and 4-wheel drive). DEPENDABLE."

Immediately after my purchase, Toyotas suffered the accelerator scandal and the value of my new purchase declined precipitously. "I purchased this vehicle hoping for high reliability. In fact, I purchased two identical units. Both have had multiple drive shaft replacements due to siezed U-joints (not under warrenty and at a cost of $1,000 each), multiple replacements of the Electromechanical coupler (determines how much power to send to the rear wheels in all wheel drive mode). First replacement on each vehicle was under a secret warrenty, subsequent replacements where on my tab, at approx. $1,000 each. Lastly, I have had the VVT replaced, at my cost of $2,300. I missed the secret warrenty by 8,000 kilometers."

It even has the original brakes at 115k! It does not use any oil, the mileage on trips is 30 to 32 mpg and it is sure-footed in slippery conditions. I only recently replaced the shocks, because after 168,000 miles on mostly gravel roads, they should have been replaced! I highly recommend this car, and will look hard at replacing it with another Toyota RAV4 or equivalent when the time comes."

Marcia M., CA (2009 Toyota RAV4)

"In 9 years, I've had only two 'major' issues, neither of which caused me any down time on the car. Water pump went, $500, fixed in an hour, and tie bars went bad, $900? In the shop for a few hours, but that's it."

It also has great power for passing. When driving the local roads at 65 mph or lower we easily average 25 MPG or better.
