Not only has it pioneered the genre, but the Toyota RAV4 has been one of the better compact SUVs, consistently among the top-ranked models in the class. But competition in the small-SUV class has never been stiffer, so to maintain its position the freshened 2016 Toyota RAV4 underwent a number of changes.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"This has great pickup for a 4 cyc, and gets great gas mileage."

Donald S., TN (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"The 4 cylinder engine is surprisingly peppy. It does well on steep gravel roads, overall very fun to drive!"

Anonymous, AK (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Accelerates quickly... easy to maintain in heavy traffic"

Donna L., FL (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Relatively good acceleration; responsive"

William M., CO (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"It accelerates quickly and handles easily. Plus, it fits nicely in my garage which my Honda Odyssey didn't."

Carole W., GA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"The ECO mode is not good. never downshifts. and the regular mode seems to suffer the same...it is like I have to drive it long distances occasionally to function properly.."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"The new spacing cruise control does not work well in many situations and brakes rapidly and dangerously. The out of lane sensor beeps for poor roads which now are many. Also, the "hands on the wheel" beeps for me b/c I cannot grip the wheel tightly due to medical issues. For me, the "hands on the wheel" feature is useless and distracting but can only be turned off in the lane sensor is also turned off. I see how these features could be helpful but not as much as I had hoped."

Anonymous, AZ (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"drives really really nice, no trouble merging on the interstate"

Anonymous, TN (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Very comfortable to sit in Smooth drive with good acceleration All the safety features ( Safety sense). Because of these safety features I received a 5% discount on my auto insurance"

Anonymous, ON (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Smooth"

Dorothy L., NE (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Great handling....very easy to maneuver into parking spaces and around corners....sits up higher than my previous car; therefore, much better visibility."

Martha P., WA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Safety features"

Bernard T., MA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Good acceleration and nimble handling. Fun to drive"

Louis K., OR (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Unsure about getting a 4 cylinder, but it has great acceleration. You can use Economy or Sport modes. App shows your mileage. Handles super cornering. Backing is amazing with the screen aid and sound if a car is coming from pretty far away. If you wander out of lane it beeps and a gentle pull back. If a car stops suddenly in front of you, an alarm alerts you and I think it even starts to break. The mirrors have lights that show when there is someone in your blind spot. Hit a bad storm and the lighting system and traction made driving in it just fine. Coming form a bigger van, the ride isn't quite as solid, but super happy with this snappy SUV."

Roanne R., MN (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Very easy to drive and control"

Michael G., NC (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Good"

Anonymous, OH (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"It is very responsive, provides good road feel, and provides good visibility."

Anonymous, TX (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"The accelerator is very responsive to the input of the driver. other cars I tested were very sluggish to accelerator input."

Joseph F., NJ (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"I find the large and bulbous hood to make it difficult to anticipate and observe objects and curbs toward the front of the car. This is very noticeable in comparison to the 2004 RAV4 I also drive."

Anonymous, WA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"I like the lane-change notifications and smart cruise control features as well as back-up camera features and alerts. Handling is tight and gives driver confidence. Turning radius is great and acceleration is more than adequate. Have not used Sport mode, but had it demonstrated during purchase process."

Anonymous, AZ (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"ZEXCELLENT"

Anonymous, PA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"The ride is very comfortable. Acceleration is quick. We're still learning some of the features, but so far the cruise control (with its 3-car length pacing) is a little annoying. If someone pulls onto the highway ahead of you, the car slows down significantly even though you're still pretty far away."

Anonymous, NC (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"engine & transmission are a perfect match in this vehicle. Excellent acceleration & handling."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"both are excellent"

Anonymous, MB (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration could be better."

Ronald P., MA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Would like to see a turbo model & electric seats. Everything else excelled"

Louis G., FL (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Handling and braking"

Marvin M., NJ (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"New "smart features" suck. Lane departure wants you to drive into pot holes. If you avoid an object, sway is alarmed... "take a break". Alarm sounds if you back into parking slot that abuts road. If car ahead of you is turning the cruise control does not calculate speed/distance very well. Auto hi-beam fails on dark road when passing house with spot light. Computer thinks I am stupid..At 37 degrees "roads may be slippery"."

Anonymous, MA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"The acceleration and handling are fine. What I have to say next is a little off the point, but I want to make sure it comes to your attention. Three items: 1. I am grateful for the dynamic cruise control with forward collision warning and breaking and for the blind spot alerts in the wing mirrors. 2. In some light, however, when the sun is coming in from a particular angle, the digital readout for setting mph is difficult to make out, and trying to set it means eyes off the road. It ought to be much bigger. In an odd design choice, Toyota has made the outside temperature number larger than the mph setting. The outside temperature is easier to read than the mph setting. 3. The Dynamic Cruise Control on/off switch is located at the end of a short arm that moves with the steering wheel. The switch is a push button: push it in to turn on cruise control, push again to turn off cruise control. Twice now on the highway I have turned off the cruise control at high speed by unintentionally hitting it with the inside of my right thigh. The car lost speed not abruptly but quickly enough to be dangerous while I tried to diagnose the problem. I recommend that the on/off switch be moved to the crossbar on the steering wheel."

Roger D., AZ (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Quick acceleration, holds corners well when turning"

Anonymous, FL (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration is adequate, but at high speed little or no reserve power."

J T., NC (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Handles ok"

Anonymous, NJ (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Very responsive Safety features - warnings regarding closeness of an object, over the lane markers, blind spot alert"

Anonymous, OH (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Very nice turn radius. Car is easy to park."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Wife dissatisfied with highway acceleration. Ride is a bit choppy on rough roads."

Anonymous, SC (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Very easy to drive and has very good acceleration for a four cylinder engine. I am very surprised at what good acceleration it has."

Joseph P., OR (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"I particularly like the dynamic radar cruise control. It makes driving less tedious."

Michael S., NJ (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Good power when needed. Easy to drive, very smooth"

David C., WI (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Several times when I needed to accelerate, such as pulling out to passing a slow moving vehicle, on the expressway, the car failed to accelerate at all. In fact the engine seemed to die. I've had this happen in cases where I would make a left turn after the light changes and I need to accelerate. I went to the dealership and talked with the service manager. He took the car for a drive and came back and told me it did the same thing for him. His answer was that it was the nature of 4 cylinder engines, with a 6 speed transmission. The computer needs several seconds to figure out what gear to use. I don't accept that. I believe this can be a deadly defect and I am pursuing this further."

Thomas H., MI (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"It handles very well, hugs the road and is easy to drive."

Anonymous, CT (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"easy to drive"

Anonymous, TX (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"The fuel efficiency is the main reason I bought this car. The fact that it is not very practical on gravel roads is a downer."

Anonymous, AB (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Very responsive acceleration and handling."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"First, handling for this car is exceptional. Braking is excellent. Taking curves on curves on the highway is excellent. Acceleration can be controlled by either Sport or Eco modes at the push of a button. Sport allows good, fast acceleration, and Eco slows acceleration and saves gas. I always feel confident while driving. I previously owned a Honda CR-V (2012), and the RAV4 out performs the Honda."

Anonymous, AZ (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration and shifting is smooth and fast. Braking excellent. Warning sounds when I go out of my lane."

Maryann F., FL (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Have had most vehicles with V8 engines. The Rav's 4 cyl engine is always reving. The gas mileage is good, but you have to push the RPMS up too high to get performance."

Richard B., CA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Luxury features"

Joe S., FL (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"I have only had the car for a few days, but it is the nicest car I have ever driven. Very quiet and smooth handling."

Ian M., ON (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"it appears to be well made in general"

Daniel M., GA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"It drives and handles almost exactly like my 2014 RAV4, which I was very comfortable with. Because I drive a lot of miles, this was the most important factor in my vehicle purchase decision. Brand/product loyalty!!!"

Anonymous, WA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"For a 4 cylinder engine, the pick up is pretty good. Could stand to have a bit more power on hills, but in normal traffic acceleration and handling are good and solid."

Kevin M., PA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration is what you would expect for a 4 cylinder engine. Handles quite well in all situations."

Trent L., AB (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"The cruise control is fantastic. Have driven on I-270 and I-495 in DC area and never have to apply brakes (except in special situations)."

Graeme C., ON (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Comfortable & plenty of power when needed. Drove a Lexus RX330 for 13 years & not disappointed with the Rav4"

Anonymous, NC (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Handling is fine. There is a "sport" mode that I use for highway driving that provides a bit more pep and faster acceleration . The regular default mode supposedly gives better gas mileage but I like the "sport" mode better but have to turn in on each time I start driving ."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Very agile and good acceleration for a four-cylinder engine."

Stephen F., CT (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration is a little weak. Handles fine."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"I find acceleration more than adequate for my type of driving (retired, no longer commuting every day). Handling is good - vehicle is a little smaller than 2008 Santa Fe and feels more nimble."

Anonymous, MA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"I hate the keyless remote - if I had to do it again I would search harder for a car with a key which is getting harder to find. I'm retired so this does not apply to me but I'm guessing there will be a rise in prostate cancers in 25 yrs or so since guys would carry the transmitter in their pockets all day. I hate it for other reasons."

Chris I., CA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Quiet,easy handling"

Anonymous, FL (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"I really like the collision prevention system,"

Chris P., MN (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"I had a 2015 Rav 4, and I find the handling of this car to be smoother than the 2015. It's not a huge difference, but it hit me that there was a difference almost immediately. It just feels slightly more secure."

Terry H., WI (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Drives nicely on city and highway. Quick to maneuver and responsive brakes"

Michael C., UT (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"New system audible driving alerts & handling."

Kris K., ID (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Steering is very easy. Also very good in the snow."

T B., NJ (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Very quick from standstill for a 4 cylinder vehicle. Holds the road well and the safety features give me more confidence in highway and city driving in traffic."

Anonymous, VA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Our Adventure model has excellent handling."

Anonymous, WI (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"The 2018 RAV4 has terrible acceleration, even in "Sport" mode. If you have a short freeway entrance ramp, pray there are no cars coming. I recall several years ago, test driving a RAV4 and there was a V6 engine available for it, but no longer. The four cylinder is under-powered, probably due to federal fleet fuel economy requirements. If you can afford a luxury car, you can probably get more powerful engines. In standard driving mode, and in "Eco Mode", this 2018 RAV4 purposely does not accelerate when you initially press the gas pedal. In fact, it feels as though the gas pedal is pushing BACK at you. So you push it a bit more, and still nothing happens. Finally push it more and the transmission drops two or three gears, the engine revs to 5000 RPM, and it accelerates with a lurch. Its impossible to accelerate smoothly, say, just to go from 60 MPH to 70 MPH, it either does not accelerate, or it does so with a lurch like described above. And then you have to back off on the accelerator pedal, to level off at 70 MPH."

Paul N., TX (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"very nimble, makes it a pleasure to drive"

Anonymous, MD (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Driver assist dynamic cruise control is outstanding"

John V., TX (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"The car has good acceleration to be safe on the freeway and handles well on less developed roads. The safety systems are not obtrusive."

W S., IN (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"For an unboosted 4 cylinder car, it accelerates very well with the 6 speed automatic. If a 6 cylinder option were available, however, I would have paid extra for it."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Handles curves well and acceleration seems fine for the driving I do."

Anonymous, LA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"LOVE the lane departure feature and the adaptive cruise control."

James G., NY (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"The gas mileage is great compared to the Caravan. It accelerates faster, and the handling is good. The brakes are a bit slower than the Caravan. I have driven it little miles on the highway so I can't comment on that."

Anonymous, ON (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleleration excellent"

Anonymous, ON (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Acceleration and handling are excellent. It turns on a dime. But the steering is actually a little too quick and could use more road feel. And I wish it had a pedal-type parking brake like my Camry's have had."

Ian R., NY (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"It handles great on curves and corners, very stable. The ride is quiet and comfortable. Acceleration is very good, do not feel it is a 4 cyl. vehicle even though it is, has a lot of pep."

"Noise level has been greatly reduced from earlier models. Seat comfort could still be improved...seats very hard"

Anonymous, TX (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"This car is not as smooth or quiet as a Camry or Sienna. A review I read about the Rav4 and other small SUVs could be paraphrased as "These are not the best cars around, but the Rav4 is the best of these types of cars." After driving a few different models I would agree. However, that being said, we now wish we had bought another Sienna."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Back support in seats are very good. Car is quiet and ride is smooth. Back seats are roomy and they recline."

Tony D., NY (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Compared to my Sequoia and Sienna, the Toyota RAV4 seats are very uncomfortable and provide little to no lumbar support. Also the headrests are in an odd tipped forward position, are uncomfortable, and are worrisome on how well they will protect us in a crash. Toyota seats used to be the most ergonomic, comfortable, and safe on the market. Not these, also the news info of breakage in rear endings concerns us."

Anonymous, AZ (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"I find the car to have a noisy interior, more and more as speed increases The front seats are too short; they do come close enough to knees when sitting The seats themselves need more adjustment capability to be comfortable"

Robert G., AZ (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Sometimes it is very bouncy and not as comfortable as my Honda Odyssey was. But, I love driving it."

Carole W., GA (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Seat comfort is lacking, especially for a larger person and on trips of longer than 2 hours;padding is inadequate and my "Bum" does not comfortably fit in the "Bucket"(s) seat !!"

"Uncomfortable seats. No lumbar support"

Anonymous, OR (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"Seats are contoured and comfortable for longer trips. Road noise is not obnoxious at freeway speed"

Michael C., UT (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"The seats are horrible, as if they were made for a 1998 or older vehicle, not a 2018. Expected all electric seats as standard but everything about the seats and steering wheel is manual. I share driving this car with my husband. After he’s used the car, the next time I get in to drive it takes me close to 5 minutes to make all the seat and mirror adjustments before I can drive. I seriously cannot recall driving a car, rental or owned, or a truck, where I had to manually pump up the seat to raise it to the height I need to drive. I also hate having to reach down between my legs to grasp the bar that allows the seat to be moved forward or back! The angle of the head rest is not adjustable! It is frozen at a forward angle so the top is the only part in contact with the back of my head. To change this I’d have to tilt the entire seat back down to a point one might like when at a drive-in movie but not upright enough for comfortable driving. Add in scratchy seat coverings makes this so far below what I’d expect from Toyota. I’ve owned other Toyota’s over the years and never had this problem with the driver’s seat. The only way to chance this was to opt for the top upgrade package. The driver’s seat position is key to safe driving so it’s incomprehensible that driver compartment (height, distance and angle) adjustments are an optional feature bundled together with other less important upgrade items"

I feel that my legs and lumbar region are better supported, compared to my (gone) 2009 Santa Fe Limited and my 2010 RAV 4. Interior noise level is very good and the ride is firm enough to feel stabilized in turning and curving road maneuvers."

"Firm comfortable"

Anonymous, NY (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"I wear hearing aids, and cabin noise (road noise) has always prevented me from clearly hearing conversations, however the cabin in the RAV4 is very quiet, and the ride is quite smooth. The seats are after market, having been upgraded to heated leather, at a substantial savings per month over having to upgrade the model and they are among the most comfortable I have experienced in years. The handling is precise, acceleration is smooth and adequate, bumps are handled with minimal discomfort."

Marvin M., NJ (2018 Toyota RAV4)

"My 2018 RAV4 replaces a 2014 RAV4 that was totalled in an accident by another driver (who was texting while driving). I enjoyed all the features and driving/handling of my 2014 RAV4 that I wanted to replace it with another RAV4. So I did. If that's not a product endorsement for the Toyota RAV4, I don't know what is!"

My final problem was the engine caught on fire during a oil change at dealers. Ford, replaced the wire . I was scared to drive this car. This was in addition with the car going in reverse when in drive, breaks at times would not stop car. Ford could care less. "Stupid design of cup holders - it is unbelievable that a multi-billion dollar company does not spend enough time checking its design. The sliding arm rest on the console would "chop off the head" of a cup in the 2nd cup holder!!! A short person needs the arm rest to slide forward which makes the 2nd cup holder unusable. We owned a 2008 Toyota RAV4 which also had a stupid design flaw - the gear shift would hit the cup that sits in the cup holder. Unbelievable that Toyota would not check these "little" things before releasing their products on the unsuspecting public!!!!!! There is another design flaw that I cannot remember at this time. If possible I will update my review when I remember the other flaw."

I was able to get cloth seats, which I prefer and blind spot monitors for when my elderly parents drive the car. I like toyota's, I feel that they last a long time with reasonable maintenance. They also have a very quiet ride. I prefer stick shift, base models, but noone really offers those anymore. I feel like it's a good value for the car and I can haul my ski stuff and classroom stuff when I change jobs. It's just a reasonably priced car that is good for a single woman."

The prices were comparable until you looked at features. Many of the safety and comfort feature were standard on the foreign brands, but optional on domestic. When you added the same feature to compare "Apples to Apples", the domestic brand were (3 to 6+) thousand dollars more expensive It was a toss up on several foreign brands. I picked the Toyota based on Consumers Reports reviews."

I determined what I wanted as far as features, entered that info, heard back from dealers, refined my wants, was offered a car that fit, and bought it. "First I'd say GET CONSUMER REPORTS BUYING SERVICE! No, they didn't pay me to say that, LOL. Even at the dealer, telling him to give me his best price, he only came down $1k off sticker. I got CR buying reports and bam, email filled up with offers that were much better than anyone would give me in person. I did, however, put in several requests in different areas / zip codes, so was pretty far-reaching. But I love this hybrid and so far (it's still quite new for me) I love it...get maybe 33 mpg when not using A/C and 26 or 27 when using A/C. And I don't drive it in an eco-friendly way, LOL. "This is where the RAV4 pleases me the most. I researched many vehicles and body styles for months. My research constantly lead back to the RAV4. The features I was looking for (vehicle height, fuel economy, safety technology, cargo room, visibility and a smattering of creature comforts) all are present in the RAV4 XLE. And the RAV4 was within my budget ($29,000). I purchased a 15000 mi/year lease due to my commute distance. I was able to negotiate my lease a little bit and get a few non-standard (within trim) items added on, no-charge. (Mud guards, All weather mats, cargo net, door edge trim and roof rack cross-bars). What finally sold me on the Toyota was the 2 years of no-charge maintenance and the standard Toyota Safety Sense package. I also added Blind Spot warning and rear Cross Traffic sensors. In my mind, this Toyota RAV4 XLE meets every item on my check list. I have 3 more years of commuting in Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester counties before I retire. I wanted value and economy."

The Softec material in the interior of the car needs some maintenance. Sunscreen on hands marks the interior which surprised me. Had to go buy a cleaner to get it off. Wish the side mirrors could be collapsed using power controls instead of just being controlled manually. Wish the car was less wide to fit into the garage more easily.
