This iteration of the Sienna rides comfortably and quietly. Further, its powertrain is smooth and strong and returns good fuel economy. The finely detailed cabin is comfortable. All-wheel drive is optional, but we've had many complaints about the powertrain's fast-wearing run-flat tires. Although it has sound handling, the Sienna could have been more agile and braking performance was disappointing.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"V-6 engine gives it power in acceleration; easy handling."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"On it's own it has very good power and the AWD works great in our winters. Towing a 1500lb trailer in the hills will cause it to work harder. A manual mode for the automatic transmission would help a lot."

Wade S., MN (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"It's a heavy tall vehicle, so you have to make allowances. It doesn't handle like a sports car, but the ride is soft and comfortable."

Anonymous, NY (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Drives smoothly, handles well and is a pleasure to drive in the city (turns quite sharply for tight spaces) and on the highway"

Anonymous, AB (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Quiet"

Anonymous, NJ (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"very reliable"

Anonymous, NY (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Great acceleration. Handles well, easily."

Anonymous, FL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Pretty responsive acceleration. Handling is not bad, considering it is a mini-van"

Steven D., RI (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Excellent acceleration and smooth ride."

Ronald M., WI (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Good acceleration but not superb. Although I have the enlightenment checked regularly it still pulls slight to the left."

J I., VA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"transmission could be smoother"

Anonymous, MN (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Van drives very smoothly"

Jorge G., CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Drives good and accelerates well for a van. I have been in many places with my van and it drives better than a lot of other vehicles I have drove, and it can accelerate when you need to hit it."

Robby S., IL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"For years, when the transmission is shifting, it seems like it slips and then grabs. A Toyota mechanic told me that it's not worth fixing. It is disappointing for a Toyota to have problems with the transmission shifting."

Ted E., ON (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Acceleration has always been inconsistent... hesitation particularly at low speeds and then over reaction to compensate. I suspect it is a gearing issue to meet all demands with 4 cylinders."

G D., ON (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"With over 140,000 it still has lots of power and handles great. On the downside, lots of road noise these days."

Tony S., CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"I love my minivan. It handles so well - so easy to maneuver. It is very roomy in the inside but handles like a smaller vehicle. One thing I like about Toyotas is that the styling is such that they keeps their looks after many years. I would love to have another Sienna."

Anonymous, KS (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Excellent acceleration and handling."

Anonymous, IL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Extremely satisfied for these features within a minivan"

Kevin A., CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"I have the front wheel drive model and my only complaint is that it doesn't handle the best in snow."

Greg L., MN (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Easy to handle. Cruise is nice. Hold back on downhill steep grades is very useful."

Gordan Y., PA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Although very good on highway for cruising and normal passing, it is sometimes lacking additional power when instantaneous acceleration for passing is needed."

Anonymous, ON (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Quiet ride with good acceleration. Turns well"

Anonymous, OK (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"responsive. Fun to drive."

Anonymous, ON (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"rides good, runs good comfortable ; decent economy, no failures. some wind noise nice to travel in."

Anonymous, NC (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The mileage is lousy on the vehicle in part due to the large 3.6 l engine."

Anonymous, NH (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"It is an easy driving car. Smooth acceleration and easy handling. Even though it is a van it handles like a four door sedan."

MABEL D., VA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"It is a great van and drives very well. It has one problem, if you suddenly press the gas pedal the engine control idles the engine and lights the trouble light. You have to switch off the engine and restart it."

P L., CT (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Runs smooth. We take care of it and have it serviced on regular schedules."

RALPH H., NC (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The Sienna is adequate for power but not strong. Sometimes it down shifts into 3rd to get high revs on the highway on hills when a stronger engine would just power up the hill in the higher gear."

MARGO F., ME (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"nope"

KEN G., OR (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"It has great power for towing."

GERALD V., VT (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Acceleration is very quick with no hesitation. Handling is very good."

VERNON G., OR (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The car hesitates after turning corners (especially on right turns). Dealer ship mechanics did not believe there was anything wrong. It reminds me of an old carburetor fueled car."

CHARLES S., KS (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"It drives great and handles pretty well for a minivan. The best part about it is the turning radius. It turns super sharp for such a big vehicle."

KEVEN C., TX (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"2 problems: 1. The acceleration lags when you need it most, as in entering the speedy traffic on local interstates. 2. The steering radius does not match the length of the minivan, as though it was designed for a small sedan. Given the narrow lanes of local streets, the result is a frequent need to run the back right wheel over the curb, to stay in one's lane, when turning right."

Anonymous, TX (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"For a 3.3 liter engine, rated at 235 horsepower, pulling a 2 ton vehicle, the acceleration is more than adequate. I'm not saying I drag race with it, but it's faster than a lot of cars We've had"

GEORGE G., CO (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Great acceleration. Small turning ratio which is very nice for a long van. Comfortable"

Anonymous, ID (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"There is a hesitation when accelerating."

Anonymous, AZ (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Handles quite well with either of my last 2 sets of Continental Eco -Plus or General Altimax R43 tires. Still feels quick accelerating after oil and spark plug change."

Brian L., ON (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"I can turn around in a very tight circle. I towed a lightweight fiberglass travel trailer with ease, untill it got to around 245,000 miles, then it slowed down over 4000 foot mountain passes."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"I like the height and handling."

Jim H., WI (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"acceleration and handling excellent, quiet interior."

Gordon A., ON (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"quiet smooth ride, good handling, riding high with large windows and wind shield, great viewing"

Raymond T., WA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Acceleration hesitates sometimes due to transmission shifting issues ongoing for over 5 years."

Anonymous, ON (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Handles very well"

Anonymous, FL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"It has handled quite well in all sorts of weather."

Anonymous, VA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Great vehicle, very versatile vehicle."

Anonymous, OH (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Has plenty of power for 6 cylinder."

Anonymous, WI (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Easy to drive. Powerful engine. Good MPG for size. Has short turning radius making it easy to park, etc."

Anonymous, NY (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"After 13 years, it still drives like a new can and has all the features i need in a car."

Joanne M., TX (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Easy to drive"

Anonymous, FL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"We have taken good care of this car. Last fall it passed inspection then we've had one expensive fail after another--brakes, brand new tire, o2 and heat sensors, catalytic computer. Now the system is REALLY loud in the front and we don't know why. We wanted to get another 100k miles or so"

Anonymous, NY (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Love, love, love our Sienna. It drives like a dream, turns on a dime and has been an excellent car. I would buy it again, wish we had bought another when we replaced our other car., but thought two vans a bit excessive."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Acceleration good but as CR has stated transmission takes its time to change speeds at some stages/situations while accelerating. ( gather from your reports this is now rectified after 10 years) I haven't found to be a safety hazard but can be a bit annoying."

Anonymous, BC (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Road noise is bad"

Anonymous, IL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"I wish I could buy an electric passenger seat in cloth!!!!!!!!! The only way I can get an electric passenger seat is to have leather seats. Leather seats suck, hot in summer, cold in winter, always slippery."

"This vehicle is our favorite one to drive on long trips. Plenty of room for everyone and any items we might need to carry."

Jorge G., CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The Sienna is very noisy at highway speeds. However, the ride is extremely comfortable and I prefer it to the MDX for long trips."

Anonymous, AL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Very satisfied overall with this car"

Roberto M., UT (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Very noisy ride. Sienna has run flat tires which give a harsher ride, make more road noise, do not wear well and are difficult to replace if not in a large urban area."

Anonymous, MI (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Love the seat comfort and the smoothness of the ride."

Anonymous, NY (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The ride and interior comfort makes me feel like I'm driving a luxury car instead of a family minivan. The car is now 12 years old, and it's still relaxing and comfortable to drive."

Michael G., CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Seats give us comfort for 3200 KM. trip to Texas each way. Overall Comfort impressive for what is really a Truck."

Brian L., ON (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Smooth ride. Great for long road trips."

Anonymous, NJ (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"It's a big van and as it's gotten old the acceleration is slow and the ride is not great"

Bruce A., FL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Comfortable, quiet and smooth ride."

Steven D., RI (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Lumbar function doesn't hit the back at the right place for me. Although the steering wheel tilts it doesn't adjust inward or out."

J I., VA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Nice limo like ride. Premium leather seats are very comfortable for long trips. But lot of the highway noise comes through."

Ram C., NV (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Hands down, the 2005-2007 Toyota Siennas are the most comfortable vehicles I've ever owned. The seats are large and well-padded, people have ample headroom (!) and shoulder room, plus the leg room in the back rows isn't bad either. I took six full-grown adults on a journey of more than a thousand miles (in one NIGHT!) and nobody had major comfort issues. That's why the Sienna is my "Group Adventure Vehicle"! Downsides- the plastic sides on the seats are a bit easy to pop off and the seat belt..."

Kara M., TX (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Reasonably quiet. The seats are all comfortable."

Anonymous, AB (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The noise level inside coming from outside is incredible and I'm hard of hearing. Road and wind noise is bothersome."

Craig R., TN (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The seats are uncomfortable, especially on extended drives."

Walter R., FL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The seats are well cushioned - even the third row. The car is pretty noisy though. It is not well insulated from road or wind noise. The ride is smooth in terms of the suspension."

Barbieri C., MA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Seat comfort excellent. Road noise equivalent to other vehicles operated."

N S., BC (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"All good. Comfortable solid ride."

Anonymous, FL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Our van was very comfortable New and now after 12 years and 176000 miles it is still very comfortable. This past year we've noticed a slight increase in road noise, but we still can carry on conversations from the front seat to the 2nd & 3rd row seats with ease, no shouting needed. Seats are still comfortable, we have taken care of it, but do have grandkids since new, leather still looks new. Love it!"

Wesley P., WI (2005 Toyota Sienna)

HEINZ M., NH (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The car has become extremely loud this past year. The heat shield is rattling and the mechanic says it can't be fixed. The brakes have started squealing even though they are not worn out. It is annoying and embarrassing to drive this car, I feel like it is going to fall apart and I was really hoping to drive it till 200,000 miles."

Anonymous, MN (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The Sienna rides very smoothly, even at high speeds, and handles great. Seats are comfortable and have lumbar support."

Anonymous, IL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

BRIAN T., CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Seats are comfortable even without a great deal of lateral support, the ride is soft and smooth and the transmission shifts smoothly. Heating and cooling are adequate in winter and summer (-40ºC to +35ºC). It drives like a car and it's very, very smooth in acceleration and transmission shifting, whether up or down."

Kevin C., AL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"It has comfortable seats and is very close to driving a car while having the carrying capabilities that a van offers. It is noisier than the latest models, especially in rain. I think Toyota has improved the noise insulation in the last 13 years."

Anonymous, AB (2005 Toyota Sienna)

Anonymous, TX (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The car is easy to drive and sits high enough to see over most automobiles. The seats are comfortable. Additionally, the storage area is unusually large and luggage does not infringe on passenger space. Noise level is high, however, and that has been a problem with Toyota minivans for years."

Charles P., SC (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Very comfortable front seats for "all day" driving"

Vivi F., NJ (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Sienna is likely the best value in a mini-van based on conversations/comparisons with other owners. Trouble-free driving experience in all situations, and very comfortable and stress-free driving, particularly on long highway trips. Experienced some problems with steering and wheel bushings but nothing unusual. Sliding door problems were frequent. Great hauler for all kinds of large items, although not as powerful (torque ratio) as previously owned 4 cyl. Previa. Quite happy with purchase. Likel..."

Plus, when we got the Sienna a person at the Toyota dealership said don't expect this one to last that long. Then when we have several large repairs (over $1,000) I gave up on the Sienna as being the usual Toyota quality we were accustomed to."

"The dash has cracks on the left side and has a newer small crack on the front left side. Company has delayed for over a year now in repairing it, even though we returned info they sent us. That's not good business."

RALPH H., NC (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Vehicle has been dependable and worth the price, although I had to pay $500 extra to get the color my wife wanted."

Anonymous, IL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The Toyota Sienna 2005 has been a very nice and reliable (even at 25500 miles) vehicle. We have only done regular maintenance and have not had any major problems. I highly recommend this vehicle!"

"BEST I EVER HAD"

KENNETH O., OH (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Excellent all around car with many features you do not expect."

R M., CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"No major repairs required"

Anonymous, VA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"This minivan is now over 11 years old and it has been highly reliable (every feature is still operational) and it still looks very good. The only appearance issue is the poor paint used on 2005 alloy wheels."

GARY K., WI (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"This is my all time best car. It has never left me stranded. It is very comfortable. The only disappointment was having the DVD fail. The radio still works. I have 3 hunt test dogs and this car is regularly in fields and going down dirt roads. It's a workhorse."

BONNIE C., VA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Had vehicle from new in 2005, relatively few repairs, other than timing belt failure and radiator now needing replacement."

JOAN B., ON (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The car still drives reliably well after 102k and 11 years of constant driving. Even with recent issue with the rack and pinion steering column needing to be replaced, it's an excellent value."

ROBERT S., CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"reliable, over 200000 miles"

Anonymous, ID (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"This car is amazing. Never garaged, Maine, NH, Mass, Conn. roads, 369000 miles and no rust. The rear diff had some rust but the body, NONE. The U-Haul trailer hitch rusted and broke requiring replacement at 300000 miles (warrantee) and mechanic could not believe how good the body and interior was. I would still be driving it but the motor died. I felt the $5000 for a new motor was better spent on a new vehicle."

"This van has held up well with four children. They also learned to drive in this vehicle. Repairs have been normal maintenance."

Charles S., KS (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The minivan has worked well on many trips over the last 13 years with very few problems in all kinds of weather and road conditions and is still working well."

"Carries all of equipment for athletic activities, yet can be converted to easily carry seven people. Little spent on major repairs over the time of ownership"

Anonymous, CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"A lot of problems over the 14 years. Only about 85000 miles, but getting rid of soon. Uncharacteristically lot of problems for a Toyota. Expensive costs to fix over time: cruise control, noise, braking, doors sticking, leaking tires/wheels (all 4), slow leak A/C."

Gary H., OH (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"It’s going strong after 13 years and 188K miles"

Mark A., KY (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Got a lot of family use from the van, kid car pools, scouting trips, family travel, moving furniture. My wife loves the van, ride and height."

Roy H., MO (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"The 2005 Toyota Sienna should have been totaled in 2009 after it collided with other vehicle, prior to the 2009 accident, we had no problems with the Sienna. The air conditioning system, sound system and front and tire splash guard have to be replaced."

Paul F., FL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Old car is still dependable."

John Michael T., GA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"11 years and nothing much has broken. Gets the job done."

Robin S., CA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"We have used this minivan for numerous tasks including everyday transportation, 6 passenger rides, hauling 4 ft. by 8 ft. material, easy transport of bicycles and even fitting two kayaks inside (this does require removal of one of the second row seats). It has been extremely reliable over the past 13 years, still looks great and every feature still works fine. Although it lacks some of the latest safety features we are saving hundreds of dollars every month by continuing to use a reliable vehicle that meets all our needs."

Gary K., WI (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"13 years, no serious problems. Really reliable"

Anonymous, GA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"After 13 years, my 2005 Toyota Sienna XLE/AWD continues to be extremely reliable, comfortable, and practical. I have had no problems beyond the expected servicing needs. The XLE features and its versatility contribute to my satisfaction. Besides carrying passengers, I have trailered a sailboat, carried home improvement materials and even a 10’ kayak inside. Trust and satisfaction with my local Toyota service department contributes to my satisfaction and desire to keep my Toyota Sienna XLE/AWD at least another 3 years."

Anonymous, WI (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"We purchased it new in 2005 and it is the AWD version which works well in Minnesota winters. It has needed very little in repairs in the past 13 years and is still in excellent condition."

Vivi F., NJ (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"I have had this car for 13 years and it still runs very well. It is big enough to take several people and can still do long distance trips, as we did recently."

Carl B., MD (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"Lots more room than it appears to have and is quite zippy."

Thomas P., IL (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"I have owned many car brands...chevy, buick, honda, Toyota, dodge over the years. The Toyota sienna has been the most amazingly stable vehicle. we bought this vehicle new in 2005 and often consider upgrading to just get more "bells and whistle" that weren't available in 2005 but this car has required very little care other than oil changes and new tires over the years. Best investment we have ever made."

"It is timeless. Even though it is an older car, it still look nice."

MABEL D., VA (2005 Toyota Sienna)

"2005 was the first year of the current body style. In 11 years the primary styling changes have been basically cosmetic. Of course, the newer ones have updated safety features, for example; but you asked about styling."
