When it comes to family transportation, it's hard to beat a minivan for moving your brood and its stuff. And among minivans, the Sienna is a rational choice. Its long list of strong suits include a comfortable ride and an energetic powertrain that returns respectable fuel economy: The front-wheel-drive version we tested returned 21 mpg. Those looking for an all-wheel-drive will find that the Sienna is the only game in town.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2018 Toyota Sienna owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"Seems that if a phone is connected it freezes. Dealer could not would not replicate or fix"

Robert B., MI (2018 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"Goes blank intermittently for about 10 secionds, then comes back on. Just started two weekis ago, and not had time tot to get to . dealer yet. Not serious, just annoying."

George N., FL (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Entune system was unable to connect to iphone apple maps or google maps. No maps would appear on the screen. ENtune software was otherwise terrible, with very few apps available."

Anonymous, MD (2018 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Very difficult to use. CR didn't mention this in its review. My 2014 Prius V is much easier. Toyota must not have let anyone other than their engineers test it. The car is great except for Enune"

B M., CA (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The GPS often does not show the shortest route to my destination. The worst problem is that the map displayed usually does not display the street names of the major streets and only displays minor streets that do not matter as far as my location is concerned—usually only about three street names are displayed even if there are 40 or 50 streets shown on the map view. Also if I zoom in to get a better view, the text remains unreadably small while the number of streets decreases."

Anonymous, KS (2018 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

"System did not guide me the quickest (most reasonable) route. Instead, on multiple occasions it took me thru a large downtown area with all the stops and turns. It got me to my destination, but it took much longer."

Douglas P., TX (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Worst Nav system I ever encountered. Setup for fastest route- Nav system wanted to take me through 3 miles of city streets when the freeway was available and on my route. It does stuff like this regularly. Can't trust it. Voice commands are not received well either. Piece of crap!"

John M., OK (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The voice recognition system does not work all the time"

Anonymous, ON (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
Radio

"radio quit working and was replaced"

Anonymous, MO (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"AM radio didn't work straight from the factory."

Anonymous, SC (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
Routine software updates

"They have not changed to car play"

Anonymous, NC (2018 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)
Software update fixes

"Entune, sucks does not connect to cell phone, they should change to Apple car play like everyone else"

Anonymous, NC (2018 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)
Voice control commands

"incredibly difficult to use. You did not address this problem in your review. My Prius V is much easier."

B M., CA (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Almost never interprets voice commands properly"

Anonymous, MD (2018 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

Doors or sliding doors

"Motor on the sliding door malfunctioned. Dealer replaced it"

Anonymous, TX (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
Glass defects

"There are large areas of prescription/distortion at the bottom and passenger side (much more than any other car I've driven). Also, (when viewed from the driver's seat) a large portion of the passenger side of the windshield appears wavy."

Nathan H., OH (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"Gas fuel intake trap door difficult to close, it is a bit crooked when closing the trap door"

Anonymous, ON (2018 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Seals and/or weather-stripping

"Small weather stripping on lower driver side windshield came partially out. Toyota replaced under warranty."

J B., CA (2018 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)
Squeaks or rattles

"The DVD Monitor in the ceiling squeaks - Toyota will correct the issue at our next service appointment."

Brett W., NJ (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)
Wind noise

"Small triangular window on passenger side not sealed properly so air noise. Toyota replaced this window and solved problem. Second, open sun roof makes too much noise."

J B., CA (2018 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Blower (fan) motor

"At 32 deg F outside air temp in liquid precipitation the Fan motor will not provide enough airflow to deice the windshield even with the temperature turned to highest setting and fan speed on highest setting. This apparently is a design defect which NHTSB should look into. Dealership say's they've contacted Toyota and it's just the way the car is. No Remedy provided for it. I purchased a small anemometer and plan to take measurements of the airflow in other sienna's as well as other autos. I already know that my Hyundai Tucson reading is 1528 ft/min and my Sienna is 567 ft/min. That is quite a difference. Please look into this defect. Thank you."

John M., OK (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"blower is noisy"

Anonymous, MO (2018 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Tire wear is uneven

"Factory tire was defective and sidewall blew out, causing damage to wheel well, side panels - required four tire replacement and extended time in body/paint shop."

Anonymous, PA (2018 Toyota Sienna 3.5-L V6)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Gauges

"Car would not start and display would indicate charging system failure. Dealer replaced battery put we had another occurrence. Waiting for another before bringing it in to the dealer. Also, instruments gauges are difficult to see as glare from sun distorts the shield over the gauges and you cannot see the speed reading, etc. I will ask the dealer to replace as I feel this is a safety issue. Please contact Toyota on my behalf and others."

Terry S., FL (2018 Toyota Sienna Limited 3.5-L V6)
