Introduced in 2007, this generation of the Tundra was bulked up to take on Detroit's full-sized workhorses. Growing dramatically in size, but losing much of the refinement of the previous model, the Tundra, once considered the Camry of pickups -- fully-modern and easy to live with -- became one of the least refined and most dated. Shortcomings abound.

Road Test

Introduced in 2007, this generation of the Tundra was bulked up to take on Detroit's full-sized workhorses. Growing dramatically in size, but losing much of the refinement of the previous model, the Tundra, once considered the Camry of pickups -- fully-modern and easy to live with -- became one of the least refined and most dated. Shortcomings abound. Among them, the Tundra's ride is jittery, especially with the TRD off-road package. Build configurations and options were limited as well.

On the plus side, Tundra's 5.7-liter V8 produces effortless power and a still-competitive 15 mpg. Off-road capability is impressive, as is towing capacity. A neat feature is the hydraulically damped tailgate, which falls opens gracefully instead of flopping down.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2008 Toyota Tundra owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"My truck developed a leak on the anti skid control. The problem was a cross threaded fitting in the anti skid control. The cost of the control was 2,000 dollors"

Eugene S., MO (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"Had to replace abs wires and right rear wheel bearing"

Randall G., VA (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"Wire broke on wheel speed sensor which affects all these systems"

Anonymous, MI (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)
Calipers

"one piston of two in each front caliper was frozen, reducing braking power."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"replaced for the second time"

Anonymous, OH (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"They keep seizing up, which is probably why I’ve replaced all the pads on this vehicle before it had 50k miles, meanwhile the camry has original pads at 95k miles. The dealer recommends replacing all pads, calipers and rotors at a cost of $1,800."

Anonymous, ME (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"See answer to squeaking. Calipers were inpacted by the broken retraction spring."

Anonymous, GA (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 5.7-L V8)

"calipers locked and froze"

D C., NY (2008 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

"Calipers seem to freeze up easily, requiring replacement. May be due to how much it sits, but I drive it at least once a week."

Brian B., ME (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"Calipers rust up and can't be removed without breaking during brake pad replacement. New calipers required"

Louis H., NY (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 4.7-L V8)

"The rear brakes were stuck in an open position and were not working"

Anonymous, NH (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 5.7-L V8)

"Calipers required replacement (rusted pin) to replace the brake pads. $250 per caliper part cost"

Louis H., NY (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 4.7-L V8)

"Calipers required rebuild or replacement due to corrosion in slider mechanism"

Mark B., MN (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 5.7-L V8)

"Calipers wouldn't release, causing added wear on the pads. Also, the strap hangers failed on plastic protective cover under gas tank...$6000+ repair. Also rear wheel bearings failed after warrantee expired...$2000+ repair bill. Not a happy campe"

Jeffrey R., ME (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)
Master cylinder

"Failure of Vacuum air pump, rather then master cylinder. Cost was about $500.00 and only one in all of Canada. Had to wait almost a week while one was flown in from Vancouver BC. Service dept at Heffner Toyota in Kitchener had never heard of such a failure"

Peter W., ON (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"The master cylinder engaged and caused all 4 wheels to make the brakes engage and the truck could not move"

Richard A., NC (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"Master Cylinder developed a leak and caused the power brake booster to fail. Had to replace both units. Could still stop but wouldn't want to push it too far."

Anonymous, (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 4.0-L V6)
Normal routine brake wear

"Had to replace all of the brakes and rotors after 20900 miles of use"

Joseph W., TX (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 4.7-L V8)

Anonymous, TN (2008 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

"Had to replace the brakes at 120000 miles"

Charles L., SC (2008 Toyota Tundra 5.7-L V8)

"Left front disc pads were GONE by 58000. But with the stuff i sometimes carry, this was not totally unexpected. The unusual thing was that neither side had pad with the squeal tabs! Or, maybe i should say, the very large 3/8 warning tabs i've encountered on other vehicles."

Anonymous, TN (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"cracked rotor"

Anonymous, WI (2008 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

"It was just normal wear and they were easy to repair"

Mulloy R., TN (2008 Toyota Tundra Limited 4.7-L V8)

"had rotors and pads replaced on front wheels"

Anonymous, CT (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

Anonymous, NM (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)
Parking brake

"The parking brake is hard to adjust when it stops working."

Anonymous, NH (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 5.7-L V8)

Edward Z., PA (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)
Premature brake wear

"Aftermarket brakes are not lasting."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Tundra Unsure 5.7-L V8)

Daniel S., OH (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"Rotors were out of spec at first pad change. That's too cheaply made"

Tim J., VA (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 5.7-L V8)

"Two front warped and needed replacement"

Anonymous, WA (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"constantly warping"

Anonymous, NJ (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 5.7-L V8)

Loose interior trim or moldings

"Head liner is loose and hanging all along windshield."

Jim F., CA (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 5.7-L V8)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Color is silver - clear coat is peeling on roof and left front quarter panel."

Anonymous, OK (2008 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

"Worst truck I have ever owned. Clear has peeled off roof, top of bed, hood. Rubber strips around windows failed prematurely. Truck was kept in covered parking 90% of the time while at work and garaged 75% of the time at home. Paint bothers me because the truck looks like crap. Steven S., MN (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"truck is in pristine condition and i would consider it like new except the truck bed is rotting from underneath. A pickup truck should last well over 100k miles. This is a known issue with Toyota trucks and they will not do anything about it. The bed will be ready to fall off the chassis soon unless it is fixed at a great cost. Resale value is also affected"

Anonymous, MA (2008 Toyota Tundra)

"Brought the truck to body shop to repair surface rust at bottom of doors and jambs and bottom of tailgate door. Had them remove the plastic factory bed liner and they discovered four major area's of rust perforation. The rust came from the underside of the bed cross frame rails and rusted through the floor of the bed. Read on Tundra owners forum that this is very common problem for trucks exposed to winter salt on roads."

Anonymous, RI (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"Rear bumper is insufficient strength, some one hit and bent the bumper in a parking lot and now the bumper is rusting at the point of contact. It takes almost no pressure to flex the bumper and the body shop said this is a very common issue they commonly see."

Anonymous, WA (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"the volume knob is not linear. i asked my mechanic about it he claims i would have to replace the whole head unit to fix. i am not sure i believe him. it is a non issue anyway because i listen to music etc with my iphone and adjust the volume using that."

William F., CA (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 5.7-L V8)

"poor reception, display screen, CD player was always on shuffle. Dealer replaced twice. Finally bought a decent aftermarket unit"

Daniel J., GA (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"Radio fails to play on half the speaker channels. Front left and rear right fade after 30 seconds of turning on the system. Having similar issues with other channels after few minutes of the system being turned on. A used replacement radio had same problems."

Thomas W., IN (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 5.7-L V8)

"Radio would come on without turning on. Sometimes, radio would turn off on its own too. Had radio replaced soon after purchase. Approximately 12 months later, that radio started doing the same. Louis H., NY (2008 Toyota Tundra Base 4.7-L V8)

"Secondary air control valve was supposed to have been replaced or repaired by dealer 2 yrs prior. The oxidation compared to the other valve on the other side was unidentifiable. I believe it was never replaced. After second failure Toyota national HQ refused to take responsibility. Through research I have found this an issue"

Roland M., RI (2008 Toyota Tundra SR5 4.7-L V8)

"Toyota has has problems with the secondary air system with the 5.7 V8. I first experienced a problem with just over 100,000 miles. After arguing with Toyota they finally had a recall, it is and emission issue, and fixed the problem. So here I am again after an additional 130,000 miles the issue is back. They want $4,000.00 for the repair."
