Road Test

The current-generation Tundra bulked up to take on Detroit's full-sized workhorses. Dramatically growing in size and losing much of the refinement of the previous smaller-scale model, the Tundra has so far failed to make inroads into the Detroit-dominated segment. Even worse, while all of the major players have been fully redesigned since this Tundra came out, the Toyota solders on, virtually unchanged except for a cosmetic facelift in 2014. Ironically, while the Tundra was once considered the Camry of pickups -- fully-modern and easy to live with -- it now is one of the least refined and most dated.

Easily the Tundra's best attribute is its 5.7-liter V8, which produces effortless power and a still-competitive 15 mpg. Off-road capability is impressive as is towing capacity. A neat feature is the hydraulically damped tailgate that you can raise and lower easily. The Tundra is also the most reliable full-sized truck on the market.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Toyota Tundra owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"The windshield and headliner had water/condensation. The dealership was aware that there was a problem from the factory on the double cab models, they replaced the windshield twice, then ended up replacing the entire headliner (wrong size was installed at the factory)."

Steven M., NC (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"There is an air leak in the windshield area when traveling at highway speeds with a strong head wind or crosswind"

David T., MI (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"The weather stripping does not appear to be as tight and seal as well as my 2001 Tundra"

Anonymous, CO (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

"There is a moderately loud wind whistle at highway speed in high crosswinds"

David T., TX (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)
Squeaks or rattles

"This problem is not resolved yet. A horrific rattle has happened almost since day 1, and it has been getting worse. I initially thought the exhaust heat shield might be the problem. The dealership has not been able to diagnose because the rattle used to occur only in am when the truck was started cold. Now happens more frequently during the day. The dealer says that it's not in the exhaust system; it's in the engine, although no specific cause determined yet. Complicating the issue is that at the 18 month visit, they also found the oil to be 3.5 quarts low (despite changing oil at 12 month visit about 3500 months earlier). No apparent leak; they think it's burning oil. How the two issues are related I don't know, but very disconcerting!!"

P H., TN (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

"the plastic wheel skins rattle on un-smooth pavement"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"Headliner continually rattling on passenger side. Especially bad when cold outside. Still not entirely fixed after 4 attempts to fix at the dealership. Love the vehicle otherwise but has been aggravating to the point that I have considered taking the vehicle back and getting whatever toyota would give me in terms of trade value"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)
Wind noise

"the cab of the truck isn't quite you hear road noise and the tires, have to increase volume on radio or talk loud, very poor insulation in the crew cab area due to the short bed to the truck, wouldn't buy again would buy a diesel GM or Ram"

Anonymous, NC (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)

"At 50 mph or over there is a wind noise from the windows. I just turn down my hearing aid!"

Anonymous, TN (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 4.6-L V8)

"Seems to be a sealing problem with the front windows?"

David W., TN (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 4.6-L V8)

"Not exactly sure were it is coming from, but if I am traveling on the highway and there is any wind blowing, at about 70 .mph I get a howling noise,"

Randall F., CA (2017 Toyota Tundra 5.7-L V8)

"If the truck is driven in a high cross wind, it has an annoying moan or groan. We live where a 15 mph wind is considered a light breeze so it happens a lot."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"At speeds above 70mph, there is an intermittent resonant noise that sounds like severe rubbing but is NOT. It can be quite loud and annoying and occurs mostly with a crosswind from left to right."

James C., CA (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 4.6-L V8)

"Wind noise around sun roof window at highway speeds driving into strong head wind"

Anonymous, CO (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"It started once I moved to Pennsylvania had to have a brake job done on vehicle"

Anonymous, PA (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)
Calipers

"All calipers were seized, rear required replacement"

Anonymous, NS (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)
Parking brake

"I'm able to push the parking brake 15-clicks, all the way to the floor, but it still won't hold the vehicle on a hill. Took it to the dealer, and they wouldn't adjust it, because they said it was already within spec (6 to 9 clicks). I have an open case number with Toyota, because my 15 clicks and not holding doesn't match the dealer. This is ongoing. Am having to take it to a different dealer now for a second opinion. Truck only has 5400 miles, so this is a warranty repair, if I can find a dealer to adjust it properly. This is a serious safety issue, because I also use it to pull a camping trailer. A towing vehicle like this should have a very strong parking break, especially for towing."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)
Premature brake wear

"Squirrel chewed the wiring harness, causing check engine light to come on and traction control to malfunction. Cost to repair approx. $400"

Anonymous, NS (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)

"After 26000 miles I needed a complete brake job. So far no problems."

Anonymous, (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)
Pulsation or vibration

"All 4 rotors were wearing uneven, causing significant vibration. Toyota dealer had to fix this 2 times in the last year by shaving the rotors. I am concerned that it will occur again, and that the rotors will need to be replaced soon due to multiple shavings."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)

"Intermittent vibration that felt it could be catastrophic. Difficult troubleshooting. Disappeared after brake maintenance."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"This is a result of the rotors warping. The pulsation and vibration only occurs during braking."

Robert B., CA (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)
Rotors

"Needed to lathe my rotors"

Anonymous, PA (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"Rotors are warping prematurely and causing wobble when braking. Brake pads are holding up fine, but the rotors are not."

Robert B., CA (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen goes blank

"When making a phone call when connected to the system it reboots completely. This occurs ~80% of the time."

Daniel T., CA (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Entune is a horrible product with flaws preventing it from being liked. I dont use Entune at all.. Also because the car is a few years old, Toyota won't work on the firmware for it. I replaced the unit with an aftermarket Android Auto unit and have been very happy."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 4.6-L V8)

"The Entune system is a poor interface with the iPhone and has poor inconsistent useage problems"

Andrew H., TX (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"it was not updated when purchased, did not give good directions, stopped using and now just use my phone for navagation"

Anonymous, AR (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

"Does not work good and you have to pay for update"

R D., LA (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Phone wouldn't pair with truck. Toyota blamed phone, a Samsung. Samsung blamed Toyota."

Gary S., TX (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

"Voice quality is very poor. Person that calls in or receives call from me (while using bluetooth connection) has problem with echoing and feedback."

Anonymous, IA (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 4.6-L V8)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Gauges

"the whole inside light panel wil black out for a few seconds and then come back on.in an hours trip they do this 3 or 4 times"

Karl S., NY (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)

"The gauges are no longer lighted with the headlights off. The infocenter in the center of the dash is always lighted and readable. But not the gauges/speedometer. Very hard to see when driving without headlights or with sun glasses on. With headlights on, radio is unreadable in daylight. The factory installed trailer brake control is not even comparable to aftermarket products with it's manual gain."

David S., OR (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)
Headlights

"Very simply, the truck outdrives the low beam headlights. I was told that LED headlights offered on newer Tundras do not retrofit. The dealer offered me no option to upgrade the headlights."

Anonymous, TN (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

"when on highbeam, and you used the left turnsignal, the headlights would turn off"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)

"Poor visibility with the headlights on dark/rainy nights."

Francis C., VA (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)
Interior lights

Thomas E., FL (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"The roof gutter trim on the passenger side came completely off. The drivers side was loose. At highway speed the trim vibrates and causes a buzzing noise."

Anthony E., CA (2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 5.7-L V8)

"Roof trim on both sides of the cab were blown off by a carwash blower. Both sides were replaced by the dealership."

Randall F., CA (2017 Toyota Tundra 5.7-L V8)

"The trim inside the the door comes loose, only attached with adhesive strips"

Dan W., CO (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

"I purchase the Truck in Western NY area and noticed the alignment problem driving back to North Carolina were I lived at the time pull a little to the right, I informed the Dealer in North Carolina about the problem they told me I wasn't used to driving a vehicle with tight steering after the first year went buy then I was told I need a wheel alignment and Toyota would pay for it because they said I should have said something in the first year, I had proof I told the dealer but they refused, Won't buy a truck fro Toyota again"

Anonymous, NC (2017 Toyota Tundra Platinum 5.7-L V8)

"after several unsuccessful attempts to correct the front tire wear at the toyota dealer and the disappointing dealer help i had the truck aligned professionally by a private mechanic."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)
Tire wear is uneven

"after only 1200 miles the outside front tires were wearing unevenly. i returned to the dealer to check this out several times. the technician agreed that there was an issue. the tires were also rotated several times. the truck was checked for alignment and i was told it was in spec. the factory rep also checked the vehicle and said it was in spec and they will not do anything else."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"Engine died and vehicle would not start. Took it to Toyota Dealership and they had to replace the computer as engine sensors were no longer communicating with the engine."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Toyota Tundra Limited 5.7-L V8)

"At about 3000miles the truck declined to about 10% of the engine power. Had it towed to dealer. They took 10 days to fix it by rebooting the computer. So far, no further problems!"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Toyota Tundra Base 4.6-L V8)
Oil leaks

"At each oil change, the vehicle leaks about 1 pint of oil when parked on a starboard incline. When that amount has overflowed, it stops. Takes 4-5 days. Two dealers have attempted a fix. No success. Selling dealer is 30 miles away. Made several attempts. Preferred dealer is 5 miles away, and has declined further attempts to seller."
