Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

Don’t be thrown off by the rugged styling cues and elevated ride height: The Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is much more of a street machine than it is a tenacious off-roader. It carves up curvy sections of blacktop with the eagerness of a regular Golf, feeling taut and nimble thanks to ideally weighted steering and nicely controlled body roll.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

"I have long loved how VWs drive—taught, tight and quiet. This car, a brand new model when I purchased it, keeps to that tradition."

Nickerson M., RI (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Acceleration is adequate, but its power is available for normal driving at low to medium RPM. Handling is very good. You always feel in control."

John B., ON (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Small engine is well matched to the DSG transmission. Feel more powerful than it is."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"The Alltrack manages to be more powerful and sharp to drive, and more engaging, than any other cars in this specific segment."

Anonymous, CO (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"VW allows Tuning the vehicle in the Dashboard as well as via OBD11 app in Android. This permits various adjustments to ride, lights, steering, handlingand transmission."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Excellent cornering and overall handling."

John F., CA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"I'm very impressed with the way the car drives. Performance is more than adequate and it handles and takes turns very well. For the size of the car and the engine it has, it's not bad at all."

Andrew P., CA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"For a small engine, this car performs and handles extremely well. Compare to any Japanese equivalent and you will see a definite handling edge with the Volkswagen."

Sandra A., MN (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Nice"

Anonymous, QC (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"The car handles and accelerates exceptionally well. It handles almost as well as our GTI. Cornering is flat and we feel very secure when driving it in any weather condition. Breaking has been very good as well. It's also great to have a car with such a tight turning radius."

Michael H., MA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"This car is a joy to drive. Steering feels sensitive and accurate, and although it's not a GTI or a Golf R, power is ample and I never feel held back by the car."

Stephen P., VA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"It is a Golf. Perfect handling, very good acceleration."

Levent T., IA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Excellent vehicle in snow and ice. Handling is superb with plenty of power in the engine."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Handles extremely well. Adequate performance. Fun to drive."

Anonymous, NH (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"excellent handling flat when turning corners. acceleration good and S drive changes shift point so very quick when in S drive"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Occasionally hesitates during easy acceleration (had same problem with 2015 Volkswagen Golf). Otherwise handles well with good acceleration other than noted problem."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"AWD and responsive driving are incrdable."

Anthony B., AB (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"The car has good acceleration with the turbocharger. The car handles country roads and highways well."

Howard C., RI (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"I would love a GTI but the Alltrack is more practical and all wheel drive. I've found in previous Volkswagens did not need all wheel drive, good snow tires, Bridgestone Blizzaks did the trick. Found biggest drawback of previous VWs was ground clearance, Alltrack alleviates that. Also have noted that the AWD minimizes wheel spin on wet roads, that, to me, is a problem with FWD."

Les S., MA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Handling"

John F., MI (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"This is a very easy car to drive. Handling and responsiveness combined with the comfort makes long trips easy to do."

Kathy B., WI (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Handles well, especially with standard transmission. I enjoy the 4WD and how it holds to the road in wet and icy weather. Controls are well placed and intuitive. The car has good acceleration and excellent braking capabilities. As with most VWs, this car is fun to drive."

Robert M., NY (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"solid on the road; quiet"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Excellent on center steering, excellent cornering, adequate acceleration"

Anonymous, OR (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Outstanding handling and great acceleration for passing"

Edward B., NY (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Somewhat under powered and the dual clutch transmission is sometimes slow to respond to shifts"

Anonymous, CT (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The only negative we have is the lumbar support in the passenger seat. It's not nearly as supportive as the seats in our 89 Vanagon Camper or our 03 Jetta or 05 Golf."

Anne J., CO (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Transitioning from Jeep Grand Cherokee. World of improvement in ride, cornering and overall handling. Quiet and quick."

Anonymous, DE (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Drove from Ottawa to Fairmont Hot Springs in BC and back this summer. The Alltrack was quiet, comfortable, handled well and got good gas mileage.Plus it was a blast to drive. The temperature was often over 30 degrees C outside but it was comfortable inside. We never got tired of driving it."

John B., ON (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Seats are comfortable, very little road noise, perfect balanced ride."

Levent T., IA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"It is a very comfortable and smooth ride, but it does have some creaks and rattles already which is disappointing."

Andrew P., CA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"On trips of 300 miles or more can get quite comfortable and relaxed. The least fatiguing car I have ever owned. Besides seating and noise, the precision and lack of fussiness of steering is a great contributor to minimizing fatigue."

Les S., MA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"My car handles like a much higher end car and it's much quieter than previous cars I've owned. It's nimble on the road and responsive when I need it to be. It has a manual lumbar adjustment that only has one setting but it's perfect for me. Others may wish it had different settings. I commute a 200+ miles/day so comfort is very important to me and I'm NOT disappointed. I feel like I'm driving a luxury car and I love it. I love this car!"

Lisa F., VA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"I can drive all day in this car and get out not feeling fatigued."

Kathy B., WI (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Seats are too stiff and become tiring after a long drive. We are not as young as we used to be. The car overall is fun to drive, economical and has considerable power with the attached turbo. It has been reliable and if the seats were less firm, we would keep it for many years to come."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Modern car seats are all about sporty and not about comfort long term. To spend $35,000 on a car and then have to add seat comfort pads is insane. On the positive side, we do have adjustable lumbar support on both front seats which helps a bit. Our VW is definitely better than any Subaru I've ever been in."

Anne J., CO (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Do not like the front seat vertical adjustment. Road noise is worse than I expected."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"seats could be more comfortable. Should have full power seats."

Anonymous, NH (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Very adult ride for a practical hatchback."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Seats are quite comfortable and adjustments are sufficient. Very quite for this price point. Ride is quite good and even better than my previous BMW."

Anonymous, KY (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"The Alltrack is very comfortable and stable to drive, and the interior is one of the best available for the price."

Anonymous, CO (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Supportive seats with excellent side bolsters, reasonably quiet cabin, and firm yet smooth ride"

Anonymous, DC (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Very smooth ride. Seats could be a bit more comfortable."

Henry R., WA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Nice"

Anonymous, QC (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"The seats give good support, but after driving for three or more hours, they start to feel a little thin. The noise level is reasonable. My car has the big moon roof and lots of glass so there is less sound dampening material for outside noise. The car handles bumps well."

Howard C., RI (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"The front seats are very comfortable but the back seat has very little leg room which requires pulling the front seat up (uncomfortably) when carrying passengers in the back. They could give up 2 inches of the generous cargo space to improve the leg room. The tires are a bit noisy which may be the brand of tire, not the fault of the car."

D S., CA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"The seats are very stiff and feel somewhat hard. They feel like they are built for a more sporty ride than a passenger vehicle"

Anonymous, PA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

What Owners Say

"Great car & excellent milagr"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"It is a very well and precise handling car--as good as its much more expensive cousins, such as Audi A3."

Gerard K., MA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Drives like more expensive car"

George S., VT (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"I purchased the mid-level car in this lineup and I feel like I'm driving a luxury vehicle. I don't know if it the German sensibilities but for what I paid for this car, less than $30k, I feel like I'm driving a much higher end vehicle. A friend who owns a Tesla was telling me that some of the options available on her car that are standard on my car were costly upgrades. I told her she should tell Tesla that they were standard on my car. I really love my Alltrack. I hope to have it for a long time. Until it dies."

Lisa F., VA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Has a very solid feel, like a more expensive car. Great steering and brakes"

Anonymous, OR (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"This car supplies just what we wanted for a decent price. My wife, whose car it is, loves its looks and handling. We feel that we got exactly what we wanted for a modest price."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"I had to turn in a 2012 Golf TDI (diesel) and the settlement enabled me to purchase this Alltrack for a mere $2K. Car operates exceptionally well, is quiet and well powered. But it drinks far more fuel than my former diesel."

Nickerson M., RI (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"A terrific combination of features and quality for a very good price. The basic “S‿ model has everything I want and need at little more than $20K. Quality and service have been excellent to this point (after 10 months)."

Rita S., MD (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Has good acceleration. All wheel drive works well in the snow. Not designed to tow. Wish I had that feature."

Anonymous, CT (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"So far so good, I am at about 18000mi. Good milage, handles well, quiet ride, and the all wheel drive very nice in the winter."

David F., ME (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"This is a premium car for not that much money: the fit and finish is outstanding, and except for road noise and suspension it is the equal of Audi."

Anonymous, IA (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Very solid car for the money. Uses Audi All Wheel Drive System at a much lower price."

Sandra A., MN (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)

"Decent price for driving experience. Transmission is nice. Winter driving is great with awd"

Alex A., MN (2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack)
