It is available with features such as the Advanced Front-lighting System and Park Distance Control.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"Great handling and the adaptive cruise control ease the pain of the daily commute."

Alan D., MA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"smooth and predictible"

Harvey F., MO (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Good: handling, acceleration, smooth automatic transmission, transmission's use of engine for deceleration, choice of manual shifting, gas milage, brakes, precise steering"

Anonymous, PA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Very crisp and confident handling. Quickest car I have owned. Feel safer due to the handling characteristics. Other cars now feel numb."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"It handles & accelerates beautifully. In forward gear it smoothly shifts itself. It's a pleasure to drive!"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"excellent handling, low torque acceleration not as good as the diesel, but adequate"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Sport mode very helpful for steep hill climbs, smooth and strong"

Ralph S., PA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Vibration at 35 and 70 MPH that dealer considers "normal". Not the tires/wheels. Other cars of the same model do not displace this issue."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"acceleration and handling. Looks inside and out. Small for a large person"

Anonymous, MD (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Ample power for everyday driving. Accelerates well, but when under full power, transmission seems indecisive in full auto mode. Use of paddle shifters or manumatic stick takes care of this. Handles very well for a car of this type. Provides good feedback, always feels composed."

Alan T., CA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"It is my sports car and wagon all in one. Great acceleration and nice tight handling"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"It is an automatic and at times when accelerating there is a big jerk (like the transmission almost just dropped out of the car). It recovers and we keep going. I've asked repair to check into it but they have found nothing wrong."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"It handles well and has a sporty feel. The acceleration is not as much as I wanted or as much as with the diesel version. It handles well both in city and highway. It is steadfast."

Ken L., WA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Both acceleration and handling are excellent. Merging into traffic is a breeze!"

Patrick P., ME (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"it is a.w.d. and winter and warm season handling are excellent. acceleration is quite adequate."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Factory navigation and head units not as satisfactory as Android Auto. Auto performance excellent, surpassed expectations. Safety features excellent, surpassed expectations."

Bernard D., AZ (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"I am continually impressed by the car's rapid acceleration both from a dead stop and in traffic. It also turns and corners very briskly."

Paul J., CA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Turbo power excellent at highway speeds, does an excellent job for light-duty towing. Snow traction and handling is excellent. The stability control really helps to reduce understeer on uphill turns in the snow."

Michael M., CO (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Steering is precise. No over- or under-steering. Brakes are good. Acceleration is good."

Rick S., NS (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Excellent gas mileage. Plenty of power for such a small engine. Very smooth ride. Very responsive."

Buddy D., MT (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"car feels faster than it is fun in the corners"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Excellent handling dynamics. Surprisingly powerful. The automatic transmission lags a bit on takeoff but is excellent in passing. Handles and feels like a coupe."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"For me, the accelerator and brake pedal are a bit sensitive when engaging them - there is no lag time from depression of the accelerator and this can lead to abrupt acceleration when going from a full stop to moving. Once you're driving, it's smooth, but the initial acceleration from driveways, stop lights, etc...can be very startling in fact, even after a year. (By comparison, my old Mercedes has a bit of a lag time, leading to a much smoother start. I realize it's apples to oranges, but for comparison, I give this example.) Having said all that, handling is nimble, responsive (in this instance, the power and quick response of the accelerator is great) and it handles very well."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"I enjoy acceleration and handling of this car- also the steering and the brakes are very satisfying -"

Gerhard B., WI (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Small turbo engine is powerful and efficient. DSG transmission is really nice."

W B., CO (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"corners crisply; good acceleration for a compact car"

Lawrence W., NJ (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"I live in the Pacific NW where it rains quite a bit. My Golf is all wheel drive and I feel much safer when merging onto roads in wet and slippery conditions. Handling is excellent and it has all the power I need."

William G., WA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Sporty ride, no rolling while cornering. Like to use the 'Sport' transmission when appropriate."

Anonymous, QC (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Love, love the assisted cruise control. Love the handling Shifting and turbo are a little sluggish"

Karen L., CA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Turbo lag; and it hesitates coming out of corners as it's searching for the right gear"

Peter R., CO (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"drives very sportily for a wagon; handles curves crisply and is actually fun to drive. While acceleration is not breathtaking, it is more than adeqauate to keep up with traffic and merge into freeway traffic."

Lawrence W., NJ (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Excellent acceleration and handling. The new intelligent cruise control is great."

Richard B., OH (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"The 2017 Golf Sportwagen 4Motion 6 speed manual is fun to drive with an excellent shifter, smooth clutch, precise steering, a composed, solid ride, easily modulated brakes, more than adequate acceleration, good grip, flat cornering and all while in and a quiet, very well finished interior."

Philip G., WA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"when driving at low speeds in hills, the transmission does not down shift fast enough in auto. I previously had a Jetta diesel sport wagon, that handled somewhat better on winding roads"

Anonymous, MO (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"My 2010 Sportwagen had exactly the same horsepower (170) but the TSI engine in the 2017 car feels a lot more powerful."

Worth G., NY (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Seats and ride quality very good. Heating/cooling system not good. Heater blows cold air for 10 seconds every time, freezing you, even when engine is warm. Turning off heater fan gives cold air when control set to hot and vice versa. No outside air ventilation if fan turned off. HVAC absolutely maddening. Transmission shifts well, but gears are absurdly high, partially negating the mountain driving advantage of the stick shift. I would have paid another $2500 for a six-speed."

Michael M., CO (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"I believe for the price, I received the best outcome. The seats are comfortable, the view is excellent and the cabin is very quiet."

John M., PA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"It rides beautifully up & down hills, around corners and it has four wheel drive!"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Comfortable seats, quiet, smooth ride"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"My back no longer bothers me on long drives. Lumbar support is excellent"

Rick S., NS (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Superior interior cabin at this price point. Very comfortable seats. Well planned interior with exceptionally well planned cargo area."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Very comfortable seats which would function well in a performance car. Firm with good side bolsters, easy to dial in perfect driving position. Very quiet. Somewhat firm but compliant ride makes for long range comfort,"

Alan T., CA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Little noise, sporty ride yet comfortable"

Anonymous, QC (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"far above its price point; quiet, comfortable seats; only would like fan noise to be lower"

Lawrence W., NJ (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"noise & ride are just fine. the console is too wide (foot well too narrow) with a hard 90 degree corner creating a pressure point on my right knee. i use a piece of foam pipe insulation on trips over an hour long."

Roy T., MI (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Seats are fantastic. Ride is smooth, handling is great."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Car is quiet, ride is tight and feels slid on the road and in turns. My only complaint is the seats aware supportive but feel hard on a trip longer than an hour"

Kathleen K., AZ (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"This is the most comfortable car we've owned, We'll definitely use it for long trips."

Richard B., OH (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"useful for every task I give it"

Harvey F., MO (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"The dealer discounted heavily off sticker, almost $5,000, which got the price to about $25,000. Combined with the 2012 diesel buy back, counting purchase price and taxes, it only cost me $6,000 to drive my 2012 Jetta diesel Sportwagen for 5 years. I can live with $100 per month car expense!"

William G., WA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"The Golf SportWagen has just about all the same features as my 2001 Audi A4, but it cost less (fewer dollars) than the A4 when I bought it. This is especially amazing when accounting for price inflation during the 16 years between the two purchases."

Donald B., WA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"170 HP to 4motion AWD system with a great audio system that you can haul a complete twin sized mattress / box spring with the hatch closed."

Alan D., MA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"This is a great value. The car has a lot of storage space inside for hauling stuff, but is still compact in its exterior dimensions. It handles very well, can carry more cargo than some of my friends' SUVs. Really a good car for the money."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"This is a well made automobile. The quality is that of much more expensive cars. The fit and finish is of a more expensive automobile."

Ken L., WA (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"The vehicle accelerates and corners like a dream; a true performance car feel. The storage area is very generous and the rack on top carries large items easily. The car is intuitive to operate and very comfortable to ride in."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Because we had owned a VW dielse from ‘that problem’ we got a smokin deal fro VW : all our paid monies returned to us, the remaining note marked paid in full, a great price on the new car and bumper to buumper warranties at a very reduced cost."

Kathleen K., AZ (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Heavily discounted 2017 model that was pretty loaded."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"Hard to imagine a better value in a small wagon: great interior, fun to drive, great gas mileage, and all for a very competitive price."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"This car was equipped with all the electronic safety items, adaptive cruise, emergency braking, rear blind spot detection including rear cross traffic alert. Also has an amazing DSG transmission that shifts swiftly and quietly. Small turbo engine is powerful and fuel efficient and all wheel drive with seat heaters make it great for winter. All this for $22k + tax. Very hard to beat."

W B., CO (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"I paid about the same for this much-better car as I did for my 2002 Jetta new! I got this car with a good sized dealer discount but still, allowing for inflation, that is pretty amazing!"

J M., KS (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"This is a very reliable and responsive car."

Anonymous, ME (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"The level of standard equipment is high. And VW has finally make all-wheel drive available on the lowest priced model instead of the highest!"

Worth G., NY (2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen)

"I was surprised that I was able to buy a new all-wheel drive Golf SportWagon in 2017 for less than I spent on my Audi A4 (also all-wheel drive) when I bought it new in 2001. The two cars are very close in size and features."
