Right from the first door thunk, the Volkswagen Golf exudes a quality feel not found in your average econobox. The Golf has long been a cut above other small cars, being more fun to drive and finished like a more expensive German sedan. Redesigned for 2015, the latest example continues those virtues and then some, making it the best Golf yet.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Outstanding acceleration and go-kart handling."

RANDALL L., NY (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"top notch handling. peppy acceleration and very good brakes."

TED W., AZ (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"High powered engine coupled with a DSG (Dual Clutch Automated Gearbox) and AWD offers a great combination. Car was difficult to get but well worth it. Driver's Assistance Package with Collision Avoidance system offers high safety ratings."

KURT V., TX (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Very quick and suspension is sporty"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Handling, quiet and complaint ride. Solid as a bank vault. Interior and cargo volume (for the size of the car)."

ANDREW C., MI (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"all-wheel drive is excellent"

KINSEY L., CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"We replaced a 2013 GTI with this base model and although we adored the GTI we couldn't justify buying it back for the same price as a brand new base model. The new golf has similar performance better iPhone connectivity and for year warranty. A more aggressive set of tires would bring it close to the level of the GTI all for a fraction of the price."

Anonymous, QC (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"I have the 2016 Golf R and it has been a wonderful experience so far. Since I also own a 2012 GTI which is my son's daily driver, I can compare the two easily. The Golf R really has the heart of a true rally car. The acceleration and the all-wheel drive handling really set it apart from other cars in its price range. I traded in my 2009 Panamera for the Golf R and haven't looked back. One other notable thing about the Golf R is that the driving modes really have a noticeable effect on the cars p"

BILL R., CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Excellent driving experience for the price. 2.0 liter turbo engine is same as in Audi A3 and provides superior performance, smoothness and acceleration. Transmission clunky and sometimes shifts hard - worried about long-term life of transmission, but engine and ride are superlative."

DAVID Z., CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The Golf R is an amazing car. The car can drive like a high performance car and at the push of a button, drive like an everyday driver."

CRAIG S., TX (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"I have the TSI 1.8T.. acceleration is more than adequate and with select shift paddles.. it is down right fun. The handling is great with the OEM tires."

ROBERT T., TX (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The automatic transmission is not well tuned: downshifts are rough and the upshifts are not consistently smooth"

Anonymous, OK (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The car puts out 170hp from a 1.8 liter turbo engine and still gets about 33 mpg! (To put this in perspective, I had a 1995 Mitsubishi Montero, and car close to double the weight of the Golf, and the Montero had 170hp!) It handles extremely well."

MICHAEL G., NJ (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Love the power and AWD handling of this economical car."

STEVEN E., WA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Outstanding handling and traction on slippery surfaces. Special mode (traction control partially off) allows major slip angles through corners and the rear drive bias is turned up in this mode. Very fun !"

WILLIAM L., BC (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Great power and handling. Drives like a more expensive car."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"very satisfing"

Anonymous, QC (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Handles like a sports car and has great acceleration from such a small engine."

Robert K., PA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"This. Car. Is. The. Balls. Wait, you probably can't print that. Okay, then: This is a really fun to drive. Sharp on the corners and peppy on the highway."

Bill F., MA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"My 2016 Golf R is a remarkably sporty fun car to drive. It's agile and sure footed. It's acceleration is amazing for a 2 litter four cylinder, yet achieves 28MPG overall."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Acceleration and handling are exceptional (city and highway driving). Very easy to maneuver especially in congested traffic. The most annoying thing about this car is that it rattles. Dealer still have not been able to figure out the cause of the rattle."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Super mpg! Small outside but huge inside - typical VW magic!"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Peppy, fun to drive, and great handling for a car this size."

Anonymous, CT (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The big heavy battery under the floor lowers the center of gravity enough to give an even better grip though aggressive curves than the non electric golf models. And the immediate acceleration of the electric motor can't be beat. It is an absolute joy to drive."

Ben S., CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The handling is responsive and precise. The acceleration can be breathtaking."

Ronald R., PA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Drive this EV and you’ll never want to go back to 20th century technology. It’s smooth, powerful and silent. The ride and handling are tight, nimble and predictable. The perfect car for urban commuting."

Jeffrey B., CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"AWD provides excellent handling in all conditions, especially for a hatchback. Excellent acceleration. Absolutely the most fun car I have ever driven."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Great acceleration and suspension adjustments means you have 2 cars in 1 - performance and drivability in normal situations"

Jeff F., ON (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"I have the TSI 1.8 T engine. Acceleration is more than adequate, it is FUN.. The car handles exceptionally well, no lean in turns, very little understeer and it is extremely responsive to driver input."

Robert T., TX (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"This Golf R is exhilarating to drive. Handling, acceleration, braking, ride comfort, etc."

Jerry C., MN (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"This is an "R" version hence acceleration and handling do not disappoint. It's effortless when passing/changing lanes. It has so much power for such a little car."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The Golf SE makes you smile with each curve. It's quick quiet and feels solid."

John M., MA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Handles and accelerates very responsively"

Anonymous, CO (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Acceleration is very good. With the low center of gravity the car is very stable in cornering. It drives just like a regular Golf but sometimes even better due to the acceleration and low center of gravity"

Benson W., CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"I have found acceleration in electric vehicles to be superior to other cars I've driven. But, to be sure, this is not the biggest priority for me. Seat comfort and being able to park in San Francisco are more important to me."

Catherine W., CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Great acceleration from 1.8T engine - and equally good handling. Overall great package."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Handles like a sports car, very responsive to cornering input and acceleration."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"fun to drive car with regard to acceleration and handling"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Generous power, very balanced handling."

Anonymous, KY (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"This car has more than enough power with the 1.8 liter turbo. Gas mileage is also much better than the EPA rating of 36 on the highway. This car gets 42-46 mpg on the highway. It feels like a more expensive car with an excellent comfort/handling balance."

Kevin B., NJ (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Being an EV, the acceleration is excellent. 4-level regeneration is a brilliant, and convenient feature. Range of the vehicle is poor, specially, when not driving in ECO mode, driving at highway speeds, with the AC on, etc. Lack of cruise control, in today's market, is unacceptable. There is no timer to set the start time for battery charging."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"I have the Golf R model which comes with the high horsepower engine and all wheel drive. The car is absolutely amazing to drive Fortunately the brakes are just as excellent and the suspension is tuned well for performance while also yielding a comfortable ride (switchable between comfort, race, and individually tuned). I grew up driving performance cars but none could touch the Golf R."

Richard P., WA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Extremely poweful acceleration with minimal turbo lag. Excellent power throughout the rpm range. Handling: car seems glued to the road. Almost no body lean. Very predictable. No torque steer. Car is completely settled even on bumpy/choppy roads. Best of all, the ride is firm yet not jarring. It doesn't beat you up."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The handling is well balanced and still fun after 30 months of ownership. Acceleration is good, particularly with paddle shifters."

David F., CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Smooth electric power is better than a gas engine. Handling is solid in all conditions and situations."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The car accelerates very quickly due to the instant torque. It also handles very well. The low center of gravity due to the battery weight on the bottom of the car, coupled with the typical golf engeenering helps it feel centered and in control on curves. While the acceleration is not as quick at highway speeds, it is adequate. The lack of hesitation or lurching due to the absence of any shifting due to the constant linear acceleration and the lack of engine noise makes for a much more enjoyable ride. In addition, the car does a good job of blocking out exterior noise. While you hear some wind noise at highway speeds, it is probably more noticeable due to the fact that there is no engine noise to drown it out."

Steven C., OR (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"A perfect mixture of accelleration and handling."

Robert A., AZ (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"handles like a sports car with great road performance and a responsive engine."

Robert K., PA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Very good handling, acceleration. It's the middle-class supercar."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"170 hp from a 1.8 liter engine, that is not raspy at all. Responds extremely well, handling is very secure. Feels extremely solid and well built for a small car."

Michael G., NJ (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Excellent all the way for drivetrain"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Very nimble, fast enough"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"it is fun to drive very quick and sporty feeling"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"car handles well, corners well. smooth acceleration off the line is fun, also kick down burst can be available at higher speeds. Regen makes for easier and safer driving in stop-go traffic. less stressful than gas car."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The Golf is extremely easy to handle. The steering feel is very direct and a perfect balance of weight and resposiveness. The turbo 1.8 in the Golf is a gem of an engine...very quick to accelerate and very fuel efficient"

Jay B., TX (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Really impressive acceleration, better than any of the other entry level electric cars on the market by far. Handles well too which is what the Golf series is known for"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The soundaktor speaker to enhance the exhaust noise is annoying.I will be trying to get the dealer to acknowledge that it exists and disable it."

Anonymous, BC (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Car is quieter than most midsize sedans, and as comfortable and quiet."

CRAIG M., OR (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"comfortable and supportive seats, no wind noise, well-damped ride, sporty handling, superb steering, excellent climate control."

TED W., AZ (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The climate control works better then any other car I have owned. The AC is very powerful and able to keep the car cool even on the hottest of days"

CRAIG S., TX (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"I am the primary driver of the GTI, my wife is the primary driver of the 2016 Golf (except on long trips). I recently drove the 2016 Golf on an out of state vacation trip and found the driver's seat to be considerably less comfortable that the 6 years older GTI seat."

Anonymous, CT (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Best long distance comfort ever"

Anonymous, QC (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"seats are very comfortable, ride is very compliant, very quiet, hardly any wind or road noise ( with 15" tires). Ride is stable, handling is secure.Interior materials, fit and finish approaches luxiuory cars."

ANDREW C., MI (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Good back support"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Seat is too low in car that limits visibility. leaving excessive head room. Seat hurts butt more than prior cars"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The seats are well contoured but a bit on the hard side. The noise level is low for a small sporty car. The ride is excellent for a small car."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"I have made many trips between Dallas TX and Vero Beach FL. 1,250 mile trip... the seats are wonderful, I do not get fatigued. The noise level is very low for a compact car, and the radio system blocks it out completely.. the ride is calm, it eats to big bumps and is very responsive to driver input."

Robert T., TX (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The Golf R is very comfortable for long car rides. Noise is minor and the seats are very supportive. It feels more like a luxury sports car on the highway"

Spencer F., NY (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"With the limited number of all-electric vehicles available, this is one of the few that I am comfortable sitting in for more than 30 minutes. Few vehicles have seats with adequate back and thigh support and enough cushion. We are committed to electric vehicles and seat comfort has been a limiting factor."

Catherine W., CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Very comfortable car with a very quiet interior"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Wind noise is bad when driving"

Anonymous, MN (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Excellent comfort - from quick trips around town to 12+ hour road trips, the seats are exceptionally comfortable, ride is great, and noise is low."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"This is my husband's car and I always ride in the passenger seat. I find the seat very uncomfortable. The backward/forward lumbar adjustment hits me in the wrong place. The front edge of the seat puts pressure just behind my knees. My husband finds the driver seat comfortable"

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The car is very comfortable for me and my wife - except the back seat leg room could be better. The only other complaint and actually the most significant one for me, is that the car is quite low and therefore somewhat difficult to get in and out of."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"B ecause of the weight of the battery, ruts in the road are felt a lot more than on a gas model. The suspension squeeks whuch has been there from the start."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"or the price and class of this vehicle it is very comfortable with low road and engine noise."

Kevin B., NJ (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The golf is an amazing handling car that is fuel efficient, very reliable, very practical.....really the best all around hatchback....truly legendary car"

Jay B., TX (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Because it is an electric car, it is very quiet. In addition, the ride is superior to that of an ICE car due to the lack of engine vibration and lurching. The smooth acceleration due to instant torque adds to the comfort experience."

Steven C., OR (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Seats are very comfortable. Ride is firm"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"2 issues with drivers seat 1. No memory feature 2. My bottom gets quite sore after a couple of hours in the drivers seat. Otherwise the seat is very comfortable and supportive."

W N., BC (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

MARVIN W., AZ (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"While the Golf is more expensive than comparable models, the build quality and refinement is well above other cars in its class."

MICHAEL S., FL (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Due to high demand/limited supply for vehicle, had to pay MSRP. Have always paid well below MSRP on each of the 29 new vehicles purchased over my lifetime."

ROBERT C., CO (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"We priced similar cars in this category, but the standard equipment on the base level (S) far exceeded others. Further, the quality of the car for the price is exceptional."

MICHAEL G., NJ (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"I paid $15750 for a base Golf TSI. At that price, I believe it is the greatest value/performance package available on the market."

CRAIG M., OR (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"the best car for the price"

Anonymous, QC (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"very inexpensive to operate, Drives like a sports car. limited range is the only main problem."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"With the federal, state, and county rebates, it was too good of an offer to pass up with a lease. And when the lease is up in 2 years I can reevaluate another electric car with better battery technology."

Ben S., CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Incredible, engine, peppy and quick with the manual. Only wish it was a six speed instead of the five. Apple carplay and android auto on the entry level trim! Awesome."

Robert D., GA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"GREAT value. We are very satisfied with the car."

Bill F., MA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"The price was great with all of the rebates available at the time, but I think VW has a lot of room for improvement, especially on range."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"good lease deal"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"With the federal rebate and savings from not purchasing gasoline, the value is amazing. The cost to own is extremely low."

"Comfortable, good fuel economy, fun to drive."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"The primary reason I bought this car rather than the competition (Mazda 3) was the instrument panel: The four main indicators (speedometer, tachometer, fuel, engine temp) are analog and really easy to read. The secondary reason was that the Golf is square with large windows and so visibility is good."

PENELOPE P., CA (2016 Volkswagen Golf)

"Nice styling, modern and sleek. Has the look of a well-made product..."
