Right from the first door thunk, the Volkswagen Golf exudes a quality feel not found in your average econobox. The Golf has long been a cut above other small cars, being more fun to drive and finished like a more expensive German sedan. Redesigned for 2015, the latest example continues those virtues and then some, making it the best Golf yet.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Acceleration is excellent - quick, responsive. Handling is excellent - very tight, no play in the steering system."

Anonymous, MB (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Very nimble and spirited performance. The AWD and lane departure control are very nice features of the Golf R."

Kenneth S., NC (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Although there is some turbo lag, the acceleration is very satisfying as is the handling. It has go-kart like handling without riding like a go-kart. Very fun in any curve!"

Charles M., NC (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"The Golf R is very, very quick and handles very well too. It delivers excellent MPG at interstate speeds and overall for a car as fast as this. At motorsports events it is very competent and has no surprises for the driver, just smoothness and fine power. The extra cost of the R is more than justified by the quality and overall utility of the model."

Anonymous, IL (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Just a few steps slower than my 2015 Audi A3 but very entertaining to drive at almost half the price!"

Bill N., FL (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"There is a paddle on the back of the steering wheel which - if touched accidentally will change the car from automatic shift-drive to a low gear "sport" or "manual" shift mode. Pressed again, it down shifts to an even lower gear. This has happened to me at least six times, four before I was able to figure out what was causing the situation and two more since then – just by grazing the paddle when making a turn in a complicated in-traffic turn. I have not been able to find a way to permanently disable this "feature.""

Tr B., PA (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Excellent"

Anonymous, QC (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"The 1.8L engine is plenty of power to accelerate easily in almost all situations. The handling is very good, and it makes the car fun to drive on twisty roads."

Daniel M., TN (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Style, exclusivity, performance and handling. Safety..e.g. adaptive cruise, lane control, etc."

Anonymous, BC (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Acceleration good, though not as good as my previous Jetta TDI. Handling around corners amazing. Fun to drive on both highway and country roads."

Anonymous, ON (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Wonderful driving experience, but a rough ride."

Anonymous, QC (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Acceleration, all wheel drive, 7 speed DSG transmission all super-optimize the driving experience"

Anonymous, BC (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"This car handles and accellerates in a different league from other cars. With the adjustable suspension, it can go from comfort to race track firm. It is one of the best handling cars I have ever owned and is extremely fast without looking like a child’s car."

Bobby W., KS (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"very quick car"

Anonymous, AZ (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Golf R is a very capable performance vehicle. It can also be set in comfort mode for softer ride."

Anonymous, CO (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"very comfortable for a small car"

Anonymous, AZ (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Seats are totally adjustable and very comfortable. Noise level is very low. Ride is excellent - solid, good contact with the road, stable."

Anonymous, MB (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Sports seats excellent. Contollable suspension (through driving mode) excellent"

Anonymous, BC (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"This is a very quiet car with the most comfortable seats of any I compared to (Mazda 3, Subaru Impreza, Honda Civic). The ride is smooth and not jarring."

Charles M., NC (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"The Golf R is just amazing. Drive it like a luxury sedan and it feels like an E or S series Mercedes. Drive it like an M series BMW and it feels better than an M. Very quiet ride until you punch it and then the exhaust note is fantastic for a turbo 4. It is the most fun car I've ever had. I look forward to driving it ."

Steven G., AB (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"The seats are quite hard, especially uncomfortable for long trips. If an extra cushion (even a thin one) is placed on the front passenger seat the air bag for that seat disables itself. There is no way to override this. I consider this an unacceptable comfort/safety situation."

Tr B., PA (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"The ability to switch and customize driving modes from "comfort" to "race" to tailor the Dynamic Chassis Control to current driving conditions and how you want to drive is fantastic. It can go from a luxury car to a high performance car with a few touches on the screen. This is the best car I've owned in 60+ years of car ownership!"

Kenneth S., NC (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"The Golf R is an Audi plus at much less cost and pretence"

Anonymous, BC (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Driving and performance is comparable to cars that cost 15k more."

Anonymous, QC (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"Fantastic to drive"

Anonymous, QC (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"The price I paid for the Golf is quite a good value for the overall build quality, the features of the car, the ride and handling, and the warranty."

Daniel M., TN (2018 Volkswagen Golf)

"All in price, performance and 6 year warranty were by far the best package available in a small sedan."

Bill N., FL (2018 Volkswagen Golf)
