Taut, agile and quick, the latest version of Volkswagen's venerable hot hatch is fun to drive and so much more. The GTI is one of the most practical, easy-to-live-with choices among sporty cars. Driving Experience

What Owners Say

"Very balanced. Great low rpm torque. Limited slip differential and traction control work seamlessly."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"acceleration and handling are very good - drives like a rally car"

Anonymous, MN (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The GTI seems engineered for high performance in the real-world. It is very fun, engaging and responsive to drive at legal and near-legal speeds. Its ride is somewhat firm from a passenger perspective, but wholly appropriate from the drivers's seat for a genuinely sporty car."

Jeffrey B., OH (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The GTI has great grip and road feel, and the handling is assured and responsive. It has brisk acceleration when needed, and has plenty of torque on tap at all times. I get a kick out of driving it on hilly, twisting roads, but it is wonderful around town and on the highway, as well. The car remains civilized, quiet, and comfortable in all conditions. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the GTI handled in snow last winter without winter tires. The VW Beetle that I had prior was not good in snow with all-seasons, and I needed winter tires. That is not the case with the GTI."

Michael B., IL (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Best driving car ever: great handling and acceleration for the money, plus great mileage, lots of usable interior room."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"It’s quick and handling is precise. Overall it’s a blast to drive. Mpg is good as well, especially on the highway."

John B., NJ (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"It is a sports car with four doors, comfortable seating for four, powerful AC and a superb audio system."

Robert K., CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Fun tondrive"

Anonymous, VA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Quick, fun, excellent handling. Great all around vehicle."

Donald E., MN (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The GTI Sport has the driver package with the 220 HP and bigger brakes. The 6-spped manual puts that power to good use. There is plenty of acceleration and enough to make the wheels slip in the first two gears. I still haven't really given this car all it's got but I have tons of fun driving it. Handling is great too. I feel like it will go wherever I want it to and it hugs turns very well. You get good feedback from the road without any bit of a rough ride. The different driving modes allow you to adjust the steering, limited-slip differential and the amount of exhaust you can hear. It's definitely a driver's car."

Mark A., CT (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"I believe the GTI has just about the perfect blend of fun driving characteristics. It accelerates and corners superbly."

Edwin W., WA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"This car makes me smile-every.time.I.drive.it."

Kevin C., IL (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"outstanding!"

Anonymous, AR (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Comfort and handling"

Anonymous, LA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"It's fun, fast enough, looks good, is comfortable, and was afordable"

Paul F., MN (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The 2017 Volkswagen GTI handles crisply. The acceleration is excellent, especially when the gas mileage the car gets is considered. The ratio of gas mileage to power is the best I have ever experienced."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Car handles great. Very nice turning radius. Acceleration is lively. Car is very fun to drive."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Excellent acceleration and handling"

Anonymous, VA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"I have found driving this car to be very enjoyable. I've owned several VW products, including a Passat sport edition, and this is by far the best handling of the lot. Steering is very precise, braking is more than competent and acceleration is impressive, especially considering that it is coming from a 4-cyl engine, though turbocharging is obviously a factor. This is probably the best driver's car that I have ever owned."

William G., FL (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Car can be whatever you want - you can push it hard to have a lot of fun or you can simply enjoy a nice near luxury driving experience"

Anonymous, VA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"You can select between driving modes. In "Sport" mode, the GTI is wonderfully agile and quick. But even in "Normal" or "Comfort" mode, strong acceleration is available at the touch of the throttle, after a moment's hesitation. The brakes are amazing, so much so that there is a learning curve... you need to feather them or you risk getting rear-ended if someone is following too closely. That being said, it is extremely comforting to have that capability if you need it."

Anthony W., CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"It's peppy, corners beautifully, and still gets great gas mileage."

David M., NY (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Corners like a sports car. Quicker than any front wheel car I have ever driven. Great car for commuting or to blast down a curvy road."

Steven G., OH (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Excellent vehicle"

Anonymous, MN (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Actively fun to drive. Zippy, with great handling."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"This car is FAST! I can outrun anybody on the road if need be, but most of the time it drives very smoothly and comfortably. The ride is on the firmer side (to be expected with a sports car) but it is comfortable for daily commuting."

Justin C., CT (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"This is a truly great driving car for the money."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The engine pulls strongly through its range, and the car sticks to the road. Unlike a lot of small, 4-cylinder cars, it is smooth and refined and doesn't feel like you're abusing it when you want to drive with a bit of alacrity. It also gets great mileage, and if I want I can use regular gas without really noticing a drop in performance."

Timothy R., MD (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Ease of shifting and steering ride is very good."

G K., IL (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Acceleration is very good , as are the brakes. The handling is well balanced, sure footed, with inspired confidence. Has good low end torque, making it fun to drive in every day driving. The DSG transmission in sport mode just adds to the fun to drive factor."

George S., AZ (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Quick, agile fun"

Anonymous, MN (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The GTI is seriously quick (under 6 seconds 0-60). Handling is an outstanding combination of firmness without harshness, and reasonable comfort. The overall performance blend provides a sensation that feels like the car is reading your mind's intentions. Steering feel is precise and fluid, and the wheel effort is firm and not overboosted. Turning response is sharp. This is not like most other cars of similar size, it is a sports car disguised as a hatchback."

Bruce P., NY (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Acceleration, handling, steering response and ride - all round best car I've owned since a BMW 330i, and the hatchback makes it so much more parctical."

Chris B., BC (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Superb handling, plenty of power when you need it. Surprisingly good in the snow."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Great acceleration when you floor it! Great 6 speed manual transmission."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Fun taught car. Excellent acceleration, brake modulation and driving position. Steering is very good but could tends to wander on-center. Needs to track better on center."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Presice handling and strong acceleration at all speeds"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Handles like a go cart. Incredible. Amazing acceleration. Dual clutch transmission is a joy."

Jeffrey T., CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The GTI has outstanding acceleration, braking, and handling characteristics while still providing excellent gas mileage."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The GTI has excellent acceleration and is nimble and fun to drive! I also got a great "no money down" lease deal."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Great handling and plenty of power."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The paddle shifters actually work like a manual and the engine is powerful and very responsive, fueling is excellent."

Chris B., BC (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Very peppy and fun to drive"

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"My GTI shifts and accelerates quickly and handles like a sports car"

Raymond M., GA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Acceleration and handling are first rate; it is a joy to drive. It does not sacrifice comfort for this performance."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"It is really fun to drive and can be driven in 4 different modes so all drivers can enjoy their own style"

Susan C., CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The car is a blast to drive - acceleration and cornering remind me of my Boxster, for half the price, and with backseats and a hatch. It's a sporty car you can use for commuting and runs to Home Depot. Perfect blend."

Marla B., NJ (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Handles great, nice acceleration and is fun to drive."

Hugh W., CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Sports car that handles well. Suspension is a rough ride and lumbar support is not electronic and does not adjust well. Seats are hard on a long journey."

Karen S., VT (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Corners flat, speedy acceleration. Only glitch is the Hankook tires, which can't keep up with the chassis."

David M., NY (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"My wife has back issues, but loves the GTI's seats. The cabin is surprisingly quiet, and the ride can be adjusted (Comfort, Normal, Sport). In Comfort mode, rough roads are dampened to a surprising degree, but it is not "soft" or "floaty." You can still feel the road. It is a surprisingly sophisticated vehicle."

Anthony W., CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"They hold you in place well and are very comfortable to sleep in"

Paul F., MN (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Best seats and driving position of any car I've ever had. Ride is firm, but not harsh. Just enough engine noise to confirm you're driving a sports car."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Too many rattles and interior noise after the car had 20000 miles"

Philip L., FL (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Seats have awesome bolsters that really keep you in your seat. Car is fairly quiet. Ride is awesome with four modes to chose from."

John B., NJ (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Excellent seats. Solid, quiet vehicle."

Donald E., MN (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The seats in the GTI are nearly perfect. I absolutely love spending time in this car. The ergonomics fit me perfectly and can be adjusted to fit my wife (who is much shorter than I am) perfectly."

Edwin W., WA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The seats are very supportive making it a pleasure to do long trips."

John A., NY (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Bucket seats are comfortable for me, but too tight foe bigger drivers. The cabin is quiet, but the stiff suspension transmits bumps in the road."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"seats could be better with lumbar support"

Anonymous, AR (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Seats are comfortable, even for long stretches. They feel a little restrictive due to large side bolsters, but they doesn't cause discomfort. The driver and passenger are well supported during turns thanks to these. The interior is quiet for a small car. Ride is firm but only disturbing on the worst of California's bad roads."

Michael D., CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The seats and driving position are excellent. It is all-day comfortable--good for any car, but exceptional for a small performance-oriented car. It is remarkably quiet as well, for a small/performance car."

Timothy R., MD (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"All excellent Ride very compliant. Car very tight"

Anonymous, PR (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Very comfortable seats. Ride is sporty."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Very comfortable seats. Quiet. Controlled ride."

Jeffrey T., CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Relatively quiet for a performance car"

Anonymous, MN (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Great non-leather seats. Very supportive and you don't slide in them"

Anonymous, TN (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Excellent handling and engine response, plus very good ride quality. Build quality is excellent - the best all round sports car for the mature driver, plus very fuel efficient."

Chris B., BC (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The seats are comfortable, the noise is enhanced with the sound actor. The ride is sure footed and confident."

George S., AZ (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Seats in the GTI are very comfortable - 12 hour drives are manageable in this car. Other cars become uncomfortable after a short time."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"all good"

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Comfortable car with spirited driving. Appreciate the hatchback for ease of transporting equipment, groceries, etc. Only maintenance and fuel to date. Very good gas mileage."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"I think of this GTI as the perfect car. It is a blast to drive around town, highways, and twisty roads. The GTI is responsive, but it is still well mannered. It is like a gentleman who can get down and dirty when needed. In addition, the car has a stable, quiet, and very comfortable highway demeanor. The GTI is also practical, and it can handle plenty of luggage, groceries, etc. The cabin is comfortable in from and back. I also appreciate the fact that VW did not feel the urge to follow the trend with "edgy" styling. We have gotten great gas mileage, as well. I was able to negotiate a terrific deal pitting dealers against one another, and I got a price significantly below the price True Car offered."

Michael B., IL (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"I bought my 2017 GTI Sport 6-speed manual in June 2017 and paid under $30K. For that price, I really feel like I got an amazing car. It's stylish and sporty, comfortable and the interior is a step above similarly priced cars. The driving experience is awesome. Lots of power and great handling without a ride that gets too stiff. It's very comfortable and I love the driver's seat (I'm 5'8" FYI). I've taken long drives in the car and just have a blast. The car also gets great gas mileage. When I do a lot of highway driving, I'm getting 35 mpg and I don't baby it because I love the acceleration. It's definitely a compact car but it's pretty versatile and feels roomy enough for me. The hatchback allows for good storage especially if you don't have people in the backseat. The stereo, Apple Car Play, and Android Auto all work very well. I really like the touch screen and rear view camera. I chose the Sport because I didn't care about having a sunroof or all the extra bells and whistles, and I don't miss them. It's a great looking car. I picked the sport because I wanted the classic plaid seats and I really dig the rims. I would definitely buy this again."

Mark A., CT (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"I believe the Volkswagen GTI represents the best value for money available today."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The GTI provides outstanding value in the sense that if you want a car that provides the extra space of a hatchback, the frugality of 40MPG on the highway, top level performance (acceleration, handling, braking, etc), and a low price (out the door at $22K), there is nothing else like it."

Bruce P., NY (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"This car is a great value. It's half the money of an Audi but performs just as well and is beautifully made."

Justin C., CT (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Combination of economy, usability, versatility, and driving enjoyment can't be beat."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Such a great and satisfying car."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Incredible buy at-least at the time i purchased. 4,500 off MSRP plus 500 loyalty."

Anonymous, TN (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Very good purchase discounts. Great power and handling for the money."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"An amazing value. A blend of great styling, performance, handling, amazing seat comfort and well designed radio and infotainment controls."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Some reviewers call the GTI the cheapest Audi you can buy. This is a near luxury vehicle - it is even quieter at highway speed than my wife's Infiniti Q50. I purchased with about 15% discount over list price, the car is great and a great value."

Marla B., NJ (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"VW USA bundles together several options into different price levels. In 2017 they had my car's level called "SPORT" that was just a perfect combo of what I wanted, and left off things that were nice to have but not really needed. For me, it was a good value combo."

Martin B., IL (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"The GTI has a level of fit and finish that would be at home in a car costing far more. I have had this car for about 18 months, and I still discover subtle and thoughtful engineering touches that I have never seen in other cars I've owned. The attention to even the smallest details is excellent."

Jeffrey B., OH (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"I bought a 2017 vehicle a couple of months prior to the 2018 model availability. Using CR auto buying service I received a quote that was better than many inferior cars and didn't even have to negotiate. I was VERY pleased."

Steven L., GA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Audi feel at a VW price."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"It is hard to find a car with this performance and features for under 30k."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"In of season sale."

Clifton L., NC (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"Excellent driver's car - great bolstered seats, sharp steering, and great engine and transmission response make the GTI truly engaging and sporty to drive."

Chris B., BC (2017 Volkswagen GTI)

"I wanted a small car for crowded city driving and parking. I also wanted a practical size. But I was unwilling to sacrifice much driving performance. This was the most reasonably priced practical small car that was fun to drive."
