The Jetta sedan emerged from its 2011 redesign as something altogether more humdrum than the compact, agile and tautly-sprung European car it had been. The cabin is roomier and the trunk is huge, but handling fell short on agility and cornering grip. Interior quality, formerly impeccable, was subpar. The hoary 170-hp, 2.5-liter, five-cylinder engine carried over.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

What Owners Say

"TDI hesitates and kind of jumps when you hit the have to get used to it...showed it to the dealer and they "didn't notice anything out of the ordinary"..."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Love the acceleration. Especially the S shift control"

GARY M., IN (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"diesel engine, DGS tranny, brakes all good, except for VW's improper emissions control"

R K., AB (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"This is 2 liter gas, acceleration is slow and auto 6 gears downshift and hunt for right gear especially going up hills."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Accelerates uphill with ease. Not great with cornering. Firm ride and stiff suspension."

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Fantastically good handling and brisk acceleration. TDI gives it loads of power/acceleration in high mountain driving."

GERALD W., BC (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"The TDI diesel has very good acceleration and diesel prices are much lower than regular unleaded gas in California"

RICHARD P., CA (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"This is one of the TDI models that has been recalled due to not meeting the EPA standards. We love this car as it is. It drives and handles like a regular car and gets great MPG, which is why we bought it. We are hoping that VW finds a fix that will not diminish these features."

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"The Jetta SEL has the inline 5 cylinders. Gives it plenty of pep and great acceleration. The handling is pretty spot on as well."

Donna B., TN (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Very good acceleration and handling"

Anonymous, MD (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"When you drive this car, you can't tell it's a Diesel. The torque is tight and the acceleration is smooth."

Katherine G., NY (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"The ancient five-speed manual and old 5-cylinder are a good match here. The car is very fast from a start and the clutch is way smoother than other VWs we have owned. Hill-holder is nice. Handling is superb and spoils us from other brands."

Nanette R., OH (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Good acceleration and handling. Comfortable to drive long distances. A good car for people who actually like to drive."

Jim A., WI (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Tight steering, good driving arrangement, accelerates swiftly."

Phil M., WA (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"I like the looks of the Jetta inside and out. It drives smoothly. And handles well."

Susan K., IL (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Handling, rlde and acceleration."

Lawrence H., MI (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"The Diesel engine provides excellent torque at any speed, and is very reliable. It won't quit unless I have it in the wrong gear."

Anonymous, VA (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

Andrei D., LA (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Love the acceleration - great for my lengthy commute -"

Anonymous, WI (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"can handle cornering at high speed"

Anonymous, NH (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"road handling and contact feel is very good"

Ken H., NS (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Rides and handles well. Acceleration is adequate but there's a major hesitation from a stop."

Tim I., TX (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"The cruise control stopped working at about 75,000 miles."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Handling and low speed torque from the TDI engine"

James R., OR (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"With the 2.5 litre 5 cylinder engine it goes like a bullet and handles very well under all conditions, even in deep snow. ventilation and a/c is outstanding."

Anonymous, BC (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Quiet at 75 Acceleration Comfortable driving position"

NORMA V., MI (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"There is no lumbar support. I find that if I am in the car for more than 30 minutes, I need a pillow to support my lower back. I've never had an issue with lower back support in any other car."

A A., MA (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"It was a welcome surprise to have an option for heated, leather seats. They are also "fitted" with the curves of a high-end vehicle."

LEIGH G., CA (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"I find the seats and the ride to be stiffer than I like"

LAURA R., IN (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"The Jetta is technically a mid-size car, however, the seats and leg room are fantastic for the size. The seats are comfortable and the backseat has plenty of leg room."

Donna B., TN (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"The bucket seats of the Sportwagen are one of the few that actually fit me well. In addition, on most other newer vehicles, my head hits the bolster if I sit up straight which means I have to drive them with my head forward of where I would prefer or it pounds against the bolster."

James R., OR (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Very Noisy - I would not buy another because of the noise that comes through on door seals"

Anonymous, WI (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

Anonymous, VA (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Seating position is perfect for our family's average frames. Seats are very good with the fake leather, even better lasting than leather. Wish lower model had lumbar. Road noise is way more than our Golf, but is really less depending on tire brand. Ride is very good for a mid-size."

Nanette R., OH (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"VWs are very noisy compared to similar vehicles."

Anonymous, KS (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Due to VW scam, we are no longer sure of the value of our vehicle. Also there is no dealer in Duncan, so we need to take it to Victoria for service."

Anonymous, BC (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"the care has been had very few issue. Normal maintenance keeps the car in very good condition. Cost of operating has been very good"

Anonymous, ON (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"diesel emissions issue is reason for poor value."

BALJIT S., ON (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"VW dishonest about pollution control. Otherwise love the car because of terrific handling and fuel economy."

GERALD W., BC (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Very unhappy about emissions deception"

BOB H., CA (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"EXPENSIVE to maintain after roughly 80,000 miles. TDI NEVER got expected mpg. Once in 103,000+ miles did I average over 40 mpg on a tankful. Emissions debacle FORCED me to keep car past the date I would have traded it in. Expensive decision O2 sensor & radio failed after time I would have traded the car in. $1,000+ each"

ANDREW F., NJ (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"I am conscious of global warming. Since the exposure of the emissions cheating for VW diesels I am very annoyed about getting what I thought was a great car for mileage/emissions. Turns out the emissions do not meet standards. Cannot drive this car til it drops as we usually do."

MARGARET M., OH (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"We thought our 2011 Jetta was excellent value for money when we bought it. Of course, that took into consideration the wonderful fuel economy of the so-called "clean diesel", which we all now know was a complete scam."

A A., MA (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"True Value, good mileage, insurance costs low, vehicle is a pleasure to drive, back seat is excellent and truck storage is large for this size car. Seats are better than Civic or Corolla."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"The VW diesel issues have definitely affected the trade-in value of the car, and also raised questions about whether I should continue to be driving this car on a regular basis. Unfortunately, there is more heat than light around this situation."

NORBERT H., ON (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Our Jetta TDI rides and handles really well and gets terrific gas mileage. Unfortunately, it's been polluting a whole lot more than we thought it was because of VW's cheat. We're keeping it for several more months until we have to trade it in because there's no reasonable fix, and we're sad about that. We love this car."

Katherine G., NY (2011 Volkswagen Jetta)
