Volkswagen's midsized sedan was optimized for the American market with the 2012 redesign; that is to say, it grew larger than most competitors, lost some of that crisp European driving feel, and became less expensive. Since then, continual changes have tweaked and honed the Passat.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Too early to say. We bought the car two days ago."

Anonymous, WI (2018 Volkswagen Passat)

"Solid secure handling, acceleration from 2.0T is great, don’t need the v6! You have all the power you need when you want it!"

Omar G., NJ (2018 Volkswagen Passat)

"very slow going up hills - i think it doesn't shift properly. extremely sensitive when starting after a full stop (like at a traffic light) - slight press on accelerator makes car lurch forward."

Anonymous, PA (2018 Volkswagen Passat)

"Very good acceleration from a 4 cyl. Comfortable ride and handling."

Robert D., AZ (2018 Volkswagen Passat)

"The acceleration at near-sea level where our residence is located to over 8,000' is excellent; the car does have a turbo. Engine braking is somewhat disappointing using lower gears to go down long downhill grades. Braking is excellent. The adaptive speed control which adjusts the speed or brakes if the car n front changes speed has saved what I feel would have been a rear-end accident at least once. That is a good saety feature."

Marcia K., CA (2018 Volkswagen Passat)

"Smooth ride good handling also plenty of power"

Jim R., CA (2018 Volkswagen Passat)

"Good milage and great acceleration with the turbo."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Volkswagen Passat)

Anonymous, WI (2018 Volkswagen Passat)

"My family is very tall over 6'5', and this is one of the few cars we comfortably fit in."

Tyler M., HI (2018 Volkswagen Passat)

"Bottom seat leans back too much and cannot be adjusted"

Anonymous, MI (2018 Volkswagen Passat)

"I have taken 3 very tall (well over 6' tall) riders to a destination in the Sierra several times. The passengers inthe rear seat both were surprised at the amount of legroom even though the front seat passengers had their seats all the way back. Air conditioning vents for rear passengers worked well and the passengers were comfortable even though the outside temperatures were over 100° at several points. While driving mountain roads the passengers and I felt safe and secure even though some of the roads were twisting and turning. The passengers carried on conversations in normal voices although some of the mountain roads had rough (and old( surfaces that increased the cabin noise appreciably."

Marcia K., CA (2018 Volkswagen Passat)

"We are a tall family, so have big back seats and lots of headroom is awesome."

Tyler M., HI (2018 Volkswagen Passat)

"Quiet drive with very comfortable seats. My wife owned a Subaru Legacy and complained about how hard the seat was and that it hurt her hip. When the transmission went bad within the 70,000 mile warranty and the repair left a whirring sound when driving she moved on to a VW."
