2017 Volkswagen Tiguan Owner Satisfaction - Consumer Reports
The Tiguan is a sophisticated, fun-to-drive small SUV that has a nicely finished and relatively roomy interior. This Volkswagen comes with a bit of a sticker shock for a non-luxury nameplate, but it outscores several fancy-branded models that are more expensive.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Great acceleration and handling for an SUV."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The Tiguan handles pretty well for a small SUV and is easy to place and drive. It isn't as crisp as my GTI but that's not what the car is for. It has no bad handling characteristics that I can detect."

William H., WI (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The Tiguan is easy to drive with a good performing 6-sp automatic. This trans even provides some engine braking if shifted down a couple of gears when descending a steep hill. Acceleration is OK and handling is very good for this type of car (small SUV)."

William H., WI (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The Tiguan is a lot of fun to drive. Handles extremely well especially around town in traffic and has fantastic acceleration. So far I have averaged 25 miles per gallon over the 18000 miles I have driven. It is not as good as the VW Golf diesel I sold back to VW. If VW came out with a diesel Tiguan I would buy one immediately."

Edward M., NH (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"the acceleration and handling was the single most important factor (even the higher price) when choosing the Tiguan over Subaru, Honda, or Toyota's similar version"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Comfortable ride - good exceleration"

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Great handling and nice acceleration."

Joel P., NC (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Far superior handling compared to competitors for the same money. Not much body roll around interstate cloverleafs. Handles bumps very well. Only thing to make it better would be to bring back the standard transmission. The Automatic is OK, but not as responsive as the manual transmissions available in prior years. The newer models VW felt the need to soften the ride to compete and it made the newer Tiguans less stable and dull to drive."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Excellent ride and handling. Excellent acceleration. Solid steering responsiveness"

Robert V., NY (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"With the 4 Motion system I feel more secure while driving in inclement weather."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Great acceleration"

Anonymous, PA (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The ride is a little rough but handling and acceleration is very good."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Accelerates well and handles much better than i.e. a Toyota RAV4"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The all wheel drive is a bit flat in acceleration and the transmission can be rough shifting at times. Handling is responsive and the ride smooth for a small suv."

Michael S., NJ (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"It accelerates pretty good and handles great! It’s a great little SUV"

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Seats are perfect for smaller people (I'm 5'9" 145lbs)... snug and comfortable. Ride is sporty and fun while still having off-road capability. Noise level is low."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Front seats are wonderful (adjust in so many ways) - can drive 8 hours with only a couple stops & sciatica doesn't bother at all. A wonderful change from any other car I've driven or ridden in."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Like the ride much better than my previous "luxury" crossover SUV at about 12,000 less."

Richard B., FL (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The good: The seats sit higher - you don't feel cramped and the ergonomics are easier on the knees. The seats are average, the controls for the seats are fairly easy to figure out. The bad: Even though the seats are fake leather, they are not particularly easy to clean. I could be quieter in the cabin, but it is not too bad. Wind noise mostly, I assume because of the non-optional roof rack. There could be more room in the back storage area, which I believe is being increased in the 2018 Ti..."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The vehicle sits high w/ great visibility. It is roomy, rides comfortable, the seats offer terrific support, the handling is crisp, the acceleration is strong, and it is an outstanding car all around. The car is a pleasure to drive on daily commutes, through rough terrain in parks, and on long commutes. It delivers on all fronts."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"I find the Tiguan great in the city but for longer rides I don’t find it as comfortable."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Very little wind noise"

Anonymous, AB (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Love the comfort and headroom, the ability to easily manage rear set and cargo area. I wish i had ability to control lift gate with key fob or proximity when my hands are full. Seats are comfortable, love having heated seats and easy to re position. Noise is acceptable. Ride smooth. Only thing is that mileage for AWD is not great but I don't drive that much."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Ride is just ok, noise is ok, seats are quite good. It's small, but nice interior room, with good legroom etc."

C W., MN (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Comfortable seats and intuitive controls"

Anonymous, PA (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Decent vehicle for the money."

Anonymous, AB (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"it noisy"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"We purchased this car primarily for my wife who has some difficulty entering and exiting from lower vehicles (like my VW GTI). She is very happy with the ergonomics of the interior with one exception: the doors are very heavy and sometimes hard for her to use. Granted, car doors now are heavily reinforced with anti-intrusion beams and other safety-related structures. This is acceptable to us. Seats are very comfortable for both of us. The car is perhaps a bit noisier than other mare expensive models but very acceptable. Ride is firm but comfortable."

William H., WI (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Slightly noisy, but really comfortable seats"

Joel P., NC (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"No road noise"

Bill H., MI (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"love the seats ride etc"

Richard K., FL (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I consider the price we paid for the Tiguan to be reasonable for a small SUV that fits all our needs for a car of this type. The mileage, about 24 mpg on required premium, is disappointing but certainly not a deal breaker."

William H., WI (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"$0 money down. $279 a month. 10,000 miles per year. Not as cheap as the 2016 model I have, but still good value."

Richard B., FL (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"This CUV was priced comparable or less to competitors, but had more room and more usable features. In addition, less likely to rust than Japanese cars due to use of better steel."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The price of our new Tiguan was almost the same as a used one (newer model, low mileage). It also gets higher mpg than I expected. For a compact SUV, it has plenty of space and the interior is very efficient. Only needing an oil change/service every 10k miles is also a boon."

David B., TX (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Decent vehicle for the money."

Anonymous, AB (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Excellent deal on this purchase"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Good acceleration, good brakes, good road handling for this type of vehicle."

Anonymous, QC (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"I feel as though the vehicle is overpriced compared to vehicles with similar style and options"

Michael S., NJ (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Bought it after the 2018's came out. My 2014 mb was hit head on and I wanted an equal replacement with what the insurance was going to pay me. It had to be awd, SUV, white and fully loaded. This 2017 was all, that, had 25 kilometers on it and was discounted by $4000."

Evelyn S., AB (2017 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"I was looking for an all-wheel drive car for my daughter that was reliable, safe, simple to use, attractive, and had great visibility and seating position. I looked at a lot of small SUVs and could not believe the Tiguan could deliver so many features at such a reasonable price. I have terrific peace of mind knowing my daughter is behind the wheel of this unheralded gem."
