2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Owner Satisfaction - Consumer Reports
Once among the smallest compact SUVs, the redesigned 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan has grown into one of the biggest in the category. It offers driver and passengers plenty of interior space and good outward visibility. It has lost a bit of the youthful demeanor of its predecessor with this newfound girth, but it remains one of the better handling small SUVs.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"As CR reported, the acceleration is a bit sluggish from a dead stop, but after that it accelerates just fine. You can also turn off the default engine shut off feature that saves fuel when the vehicle is stopped which gives your acceleration a bit more pep. The overall drive and handling is great! A notable difference from the CRV I leased previously. Braking is excellent as well."

"Noisy, jerking 8 speed automatic transmission"

Rex D., OH (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Acceleration is not a high point but just about every thing else is. Handling and visibility are outstanding especially for an SUV."

Gerald O., CA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"This is a very nice car to drive. It is agile, quick, and very responsive."

Anonymous, WI (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Car is sluggish when using the recommended regular gas. For un-sluggish acceleration, I have to fill car with medium or premium gas. I learned this after my complaints to a VW dealership specialist."

Douglas R., GA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The car hesitates on starting from a stop. Currently driving a rental car provided by VW because they have an engineer coming to assess the cause of the problem. Getting a Auto Stop Start system error and a check engine light."

Anonymous, NV (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Turns corners well, fun to drive"

Tanya R., CO (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"I use the vehicle primarily for city driving. I have no complaints. Many reviews have mentioned how the car does not do well during highway driving, but I have had no issues accelerating on to the roads or passing. I feel safe when driving this car."

Gregory D., MA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The Tiguan drives liike a slightly more sedate Golf in my experience. Roundabouts, and sharp corners/curves are not at all a chore, tight parking spaces are easy since the Tiguan is still European car width. Turning radius is impressive, only a few feet more than my previous VW Golf. The acceleration is more than adequate, I have no problems joining traffic at the speed limit, the Tiguan’s power band means never having to go past 4,000rpm and the 8 gears are precisely spaced. Fuel economy is outstanding, contrary to EPA ratings I have been getting 30-36 city, and as high as 38 highway all while maintaing posted speed limits at all times, in Kansas that is 75mph. Even on 100 degree days, with AC maximum., my in-town commute home has never been less than 30mpg, the cooler days have been 35-36mpg. I was prepared to give up economy coming from the Golf, but I’ve only lost 1 or 2mpg highway and none in town. I’m extremely happy, and impressed as always with Volkswagen engineering."

Erik C., KS (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The acceleration if frenetic and dangerous. It is jerky when You pull away from a start. But it is dangerous when I accelerate to switch lanes or to get out of harm's way - the engine almost stalls as it searches for a gear or winds up the turbo. I do not trust this car at all!"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Could use a little more power"

John W., GA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The steering is a little loose for my taste, but the only thing that I'm really disappointed with in this car is the acceleration. It lags so much when you hit the gas and then when it finally kicks in, it surges forward in a jerky way. It's not smooth at all. Volkswagen can do better."

Elizabeth L., CA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"I had read in reviews that this car was not very sporty to drive; but I have found it to have plenty of zip. It has great acceleration compared to my old car and handles well. I did have to get used to driving a turbo, but I'm very satisfied with it's sportiness for what it is."

Jon C., CA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"handling has been outstanding."

Ted D., NJ (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"from a stop, acceleration is poor due to brief pause before car starts to move. when accelerator is pressed hard there is a lag in acceleration. Car is equipped with the "engine stop " feature. it is some what unnerving but at least VW gives you an over ride button to cancel. it must be depressed each time car is started."

John D., MA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"like the start/stop system-- saves gas - but took awhile to get used to it....engine stops at red lights, etc."

Allan C., NY (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The acceleration is not as zippy as the 2015 SE Tiguan I had before"

Natasha R., MI (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"I'm a Jeep guy living in Minnesota. I bought my Tiguan the day before a 18" snow blizzard. Compared to my Jeeps, I can't believe how well and smooth the Tiguan handled the snow."

Todd H., MN (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The acceleration is just fine, especially when shifted into the "sport" mode."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Engine is noisy. Not much power."

Robert T., PA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"acceleration from stand still is a bit poor. Engine is loud outside the car. Car had check engine light twice covered under warranty"

Anonymous, ON (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Great visibility. Drives like a car."

Boris K., ON (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"smooth acceleration with extra power when in emergency situation. handling is responsive and predictable."

Paul R., WA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Has great traction and cornering. Could use a bit more acceleration and HP. I am not as concerned about gas mileage."

Justin M., IL (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"This vehicle drives very well and has the ride and comfort of a much larger suv"

Jerry M., OH (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Heated seats"

John S., KY (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Response and power. Smooth."

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Excellent comfort for long drives. I have driven the Tiguan for over 70 miles in a single trip and did not suffer any issues."

Anonymous, NJ (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The VW Tiguan rides very quietly and smoothly. My wife comments how quiet it is when we take a road trip. Some of the reviews we read said the car is somewhat "pokey" but if you engage sport mode from the shifter, the car is very quick when you need it to be. Overall, we find the ride, handling, outward visibility and comfort to be outstanding. Really like the car!"

Richard B., MN (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Nice ride, quiet interior."

Michael D., MA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Very confortable front and rear seats. The ride is very good and no noise till now."

Paul C., QC (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"seats are not leather but are comfortable and wide. engine is noisy on acceleration but quiet when at speed. ride is quite comfortable if tires are inflated to minimum of 35 lbs."

John D., MA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The seats front and rear are the most comfortable seats I’ve ever experienced in a automobile. The ride is smoother the my previous cars. The noise is very little except for engine noise."

Steven U., WA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Road noise is too loud"

Anonymous, TN (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Good handling. Seat are very comfortable."

Robert T., PA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Went through countless test drives with a variety of cars and SUVs. None were as comfortable as this one."

Justin M., IL (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The seats are very, very firm. All else is good. My Husband has a skinny butt and he is really having problems because of the firm seat."

Anonymous, WI (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Bery comfortable seats even on a very long drive. Road noise is minimal."

Paul D., FL (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The car is a joy to take on long trips. It's quiet, comfortable and the seats are supportive."

Anonymous, CT (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"fits two ca seats comfortably in the back seat"

Anonymous, MI (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Long trips are much better than in my old car (Subaru) - my back doesn't hurt! However, there is a rattle in the driver's door that they can't seem to find/fix."

Anonymous, GA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"I am a very large (fat) man and the seating is very comfortable an holds up well on a long drive. In other words I don't get uncomfortable on a long drive. It's quiet too. The rear seating space is very ample, even for me too, and easy to get in and out of"

Jon C., CA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"I would prefer if the lumbar support had vertical controls because I am taller and it is too low"

Natasha R., MI (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Space and leg room brightness. Corners in a stable way and accelerates smoothly"

Anonymous, NS (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The seats are very firm but seem to remain quite comfortable even during long trips."

Anonymous, WI (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Sub par in seat comfort, noisy, bumpy ride. Upside: very roomy front and back seats and legroom."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Noise level is good. Ride is very comfortable. Just completed 1000+ miles trip and a great vehicle for road trips."

J M., NY (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Same as my 2017 Golf, the seats in the Tiguan are impressively comfortable. Every Volkswagen I have ever owned has had some fo the best seats, I would say only Volvo does it better. The Tiguan is even more sound insulated than my Golf, highway driving that was already a pleasure in said Golf is even more serene in my Tiguan. The ride of the Tiguan is also quite superb, esepcially consdering the 41psi recommendation on tire pressure."

Erik C., KS (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"good seat positioning and comfort"

Anonymous, MI (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Heated seats"

John S., KY (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Very nice, solid, comfortable seating; secure and quiet ride; classic styling and colors of the interior; excellent controls and dials."

Douglas E., TX (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I feel that the 2018 VW Tiguan offers a lot of value for the price. The SE trim is loaded with a lot of standard features, and I think this trim level is a good balance of price/features."

Rebecca B., CA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Good is that the electronic features are terrific and the gas mileage is outstanding for a SUV. Bad or not so good is the engine is a bit underpowered and there is some wind noise"

Lorne S., AB (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"I especially like the added concern/help etc that the dealership has provided any time I've requested it."

Neil K., AZ (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The MSRP price of the SE model was discounted by the dealer and VW offered a $1000 additional incentive. The vehicle included a lot of additional equipment and safety features in the base pricing. The overall value was really great for what we paid."

Richard B., MN (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Excellent car"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"My monthly lease payments for the Tiguan are significantly lower than those I made for the 2015 Honda CRV I previously leased. On top of that, the new CRV lease payments would have been even more. I consider these vehicles comparable in value and features. The Tiguan has roof rails which the CRV does not. My insurance is less too. Overall, I am paying about $953 less a year for a newer vehicle. A pretty good value if you ask me (and you did)."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The car wasn't inexpensive (SEL Premium) but I think that you are basically getting about 80% of what you get in an Audi Q5 for 15k less."

Anonymous, CT (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"The car came with almost all of the modern safety features at a lower trim level compared to other cars it competes with."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"I believe you get a lot of car with the Volkswagen Tiguan for the money, and I negotiated a very reasonable lease payment for this car."

Douglas E., TX (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Excellent value regarding included features and price compared to competition"

Anonymous, NC (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Just purchased so can’t say"

Anonymous, RI (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"So many bells and whistles for the money-way better than the competitors. It's really incredible."

Elizabeth L., CA (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Sticker was 27k, Out the door I paid only 23.9k"

Todd H., MN (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Great value. Extremely satisfied"

Kenneth A., KY (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"it was cheap for the value."

Anonymous, WI (2018 Volkswagen Tiguan)

"Given the price paid for the SE I received advanced safety features, dual climate control, expanded cargo area compared to previous model, and quality materials in cabin."
