2009: Year of the nursery product recall

After last year's recalls of 4.7 million cribs and play yards it's not surprising that 2009 has been dubbed the Year of the Nursery Product Recall. Last year there were 143 recalls of children's products totaling 21.1 million units, according to a recent report from Kids in Danger.

“These products together caused at least 198 injuries and 9 deaths,” said Nancy Cowles, executive director of Kids In Danger. “And those incidents include only those already reported at the time of the recall. More needs to be done to protect children from these hazards.”

Seven of the deaths occurred in baby sleeping products including five in drop-side cribs and two in baby hammocks. The other two deaths occurred when a child choked on a toy dart and when another child was strangled by a drawstring on his clothing. Here are some report highlights:
